Same here...does UNC not have a secondary deadline? The website says they stop interviewing in February. No clue how we can still be in the running.

i dunno if yall are IS or OOS but if i were you i might actually call them and see whats going on because in my case, for example, I called because I have traveling conflicts and I really needed to schedule my interview even before getting the secondary and when i told them that on the phone they were like, oh you should have gotten your secondary already... and also hearing all the ppl who say they didnt get phone calls... it seems like sometimes there may be some miscommunications ? i dunno just a suggestion.

hey guys and girls,

i just received the acceptance package in the mail (no phone call).

i'm IS and interviewed 10/2!

good luck to everyone else waiting :luck:

Congratulations. I interviewed around the same time but have not heard anything. Did you get any e-mails or IS letter after the interview?

i received both the "IS for tuition purpose" letter (11/6) and "post interview update" email (11/17).

Do you mind sharing what the post interview update e-mail said. I am thinking of contacting the admissions office to find out the status since they have been so erratic in sending information to those interviewed and still waiting to hear since 8 to 10 weeks.

Dear ellajane,

We really enjoyed meeting you on your interview day!

We wanted to touch base with you again to let you know that the Admissions Committee is reviewing your application, but no final decision has been made. You will remain under active consideration and will be notified as soon as a decision has been reached. Unfortunately, because of rolling admissions, this process may not be completed until the spring.

No further action on your part is required except to keep your contact information current. Please note that it is not necessary to submit any additional letters of evaluation, as the letters that you have submitted to the AMCAS web site are sufficient.

We certainly do appreciate your patience and thank you for your continued interest in UNC School of Medicine

Sincerely,

Robert A. Bashford, MD
Associate Dean for Admissions

Hmm.. judging by the content of the letter, do you think it's safe to assume that those of us who haven't received this letter have not been reviewed by the committee yet? or let alone passed the sub-committee?

I do not know what to make of it either whether or not our applications have been reviewed by the committee or not. Have you tried to contact the Admissions office to see what they say?

I haven't yet. I'll probably give them a call after the holidays. Don't think there's any point in stressing out during the holidays 🙂

Have a good one guys and gals

Could someone please post the december email update? I didn't get it.

I didn't get the 11/17 email or the december email. Should I assume I have been presented to the sub-ctte and my file isn't going to be considered further? Others who interviewed before and after my date have received the email... so I'm rather confused.

I think it is the same standard letter that was posted earlier. Some people have received it and some have not. Therefore, better to call after the office opens on 28 and ask why some who interviewed have received update letters and some not and what the reason is (presented to committee or not?) and see what they say. I am in the same boat.

Dear teddy bear doc,

December Update

So I called the office and they said yes, it means my application is still being considered for a secondary. Would now be an appropriate time to send an update letter/email with new grades and such?

Does anybody know if the committee meets today? (I hate the be the anal retentive one....but I know a lot of you are wondering too...)

Here's to some good news for all of us in 2010.

I don't know but I hope they do meet. And I hope we get calls tonight! :xf:

Anyone in-state who interviewed still not get the "In-state for tuition purposes" letter? Been waiting awhile..

I haven't gotten the in-state for tuition purposes letter, and I am in-state and interviewed in October. Since the financial aid process is somewhat separate from the admissions process, does it have any bearing on admission anyway?

Not sure if the committee meets today but received a rejection email early this morning after interviewing mid-October. UNC was my first choice too. Good luck to everyone.

Sorry to hear that.... I'll be pretty bummed out if I get one of those emails. 🙁 Good luck with your other schools!

I haven't received the in-state tuition email and i interviewed about 2 months ago. the process is mysterious

Yikes!!!!

Are you IS or OOS?

Hmmm. strange. I've never known UNC to reject outright after an interview. I thought they waited until March to reject/waitlist. Also it seems that the committee may not meet today. This is just a hunch, since I emailed my adcom interviewer an update, and it seems he is away until the 7th. good luck to all of us waiting to hear.

Yeah, that's what I thought so it came as quite a surprise. I'm in-state. The fact that we both were under the impression that they didn't outright reject people until the end of the interview season makes me question if this was a rare occurrence, and if so, why they chose to do it. Sucks, but everyone hold onto that hope that good news will be coming your way.

I also received a rejection email today. I actually like the fact that rejections are being sent out earlier in the cycle (though I'm not as happy about my rejection itself). It's better than being left hanging til March/April. I will be headed elsewhere in August. This advice is easier said than done... but looking back, stressing out and obssessively checking sdn every other monday was pretty pointless. The updates are good but I doubt that anyone would benefit much from checking this thread more than once a day tops. Don't check sdn 200 times a day, you'll feel like less of an idiot - regardless of the decision. 🙂 Goodluck to everyone.

Do you mind telling us when you were complete? Sorry about the rejection.

Sorry to hear about guys. I guess if there were two of you on here, they must have given a reasonable amount of rejections yesterday.

So, no one got a phone call from UNC last night?

Do you mind telling us when you were complete? Sorry about the rejection.

I was complete at the end of Aug, got my secondary sometime in Sept (I don't remember), and interviewed in the first half of Oct.

For anyone curious about what the email says, it's actually a pretty nice rejection letter.

Dear B

Thank you for applying to the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. We enjoyed seeing you on interview day and appreciate the effort that you have put into your application for admission into the class matriculating in the fall of 2010. The Committee on Admissions, of the University or North Carolina School of Medicine, has reviewed your application and I regret to inform you that the committee has voted not to offer you a place in this class.

The decision not to admit is always a difficult one and should be viewed only in the context of the intense competition for medical school admission. There are ultimately many excellent candidates who can not be admitted or even interviewed. If you have any questions about your application, I will be available for counseling later in the year.

I appreciate your interest in UNC School of Medicine and wish you success in the future. Please contact us if we can be of assistance.

Sincerely,

Robert A. Bashford, M.D.

Sorry to hear that. I guess they must've changed their procedure this year.
Curious, did you ever receive those 'in-review' letters? I haven't heard a darn thing from unc, and afraid I may be in queue to receive the rejection letter...

I actually meant to ask when you interviewed so I appreciate you giving us the breakdown.

does anyone know the total number of applicants IS/OOS/Total for this year?

another question:

does anyone think that there will be significantly more people trying to get into unc this year cuz of the economy (ie the applicant pool will be a lot stronger)?

Almost every medical school I have applied to this year is estimating about 1000 more applications than they averaged in the last few years

that's remarkable... However, since applying to medical school (successfully) does require years of planning and experiences, I don't think the process would be kind to those who apply after a quick economically-fueled decision. A majority of those extra 1000 applications may not neccessarily be as competitive as the others in the pile.

p.s. I like your screenname

I suspect it's a combination of economically-fueled decisions and a trend towards applying to larger numbers of schools.

Well, if it's that ppl are applying to more schools, that can be really bad for a less expensive school because when it comes down to making a decision, it is more likely that the person will choose the less expensive school when its such a difference like at unc and well most other schools haha... that also means unc may accept fewer people because they dont want to overload the class (ie maybe theyll only accept 160 instead of like 200 and then go straight to the waitlist if ppl decline)

:/

just a thought

I don't think it is 1000 more. I am guessing just 50-60 more IS. Reason being, the same number of IS applicants generally apply to ECU as UNC...roughly 900. This year, according to ECU site they received 918 applicants, compared to last year's 879 applicants. So the number really only rose 30 applicants from last year.

I didn't apply to UNC, I was just reporting that of the 20+ schools to which I did apply, most are reporting ~1000 more applicants this year

I think this is a good thing from most applicants' perspectives - if it really is due to everyone applying broadly, it means there will be a lot of waitlist movement this year. Even if UNC itself doesn't have more apps, some of its accepted students will experience waitlist movement and withdraw, opening up more spots for anyone waitlisted here.

If the OOS applicants does increase dramatically, that will make the OOS slots extremely competitive, since they only allocate 20-25 slots OOS, but will have no effect on the IS competitiveness. Just FYI, in case anyone is curious.

So I guess today is a meeting monday.... :scared:
Has anyone who interviewed November 13th and later heard anything? I hope they haven't reviewed my interview date and I just didn't get the call.

I interviewed at the end of November, but haven't heard anything yet either...here's to hoping!

I vaguely remember being told when I called back in December that the next meeting was Jan. 18. I may be pulling this out of nowhere but I've had that number in my head for a few days and it is a Monday. I would not be surprised if they haven't met since before the holidays.

yeah and theres only been one wk of interviews in jan so far so maybe they are waiting for a full 2wks?

That makes sense (esp since we haven't seen any acceptances on the board)...but isn't the 18th MLK day? Would the committee meet on a national holiday?

When I looked at the thread from last year, it was this week that committee had met after the break.

Hi everyone,

The committee did meet this week--got the call Monday night! 🙂

I'm IS, interviewed mid-December.

Good luck to everyone else!
