whoo! in state supp received this afternoon 🙂

go heels

FYI- looks like they give secondaries+auto-interviews to 50% of IS applicants
...then, 28% of IS students that interviewed matriculated. If you take into account that not everyone who got accepted attended, you're looking at a >1/3 chance of acceptance if you are in-state and you receive a secondary (if my logic is correct...)

(interviews to only 3% of OS applicants (ouch!))

same here!! 😀 So excited!!!!

Already have questions though--so I went to school up north, but I've lived in NC since I was 6-7ish. Am I supposed to fill out the "In NC more than 3 years" app or "less than 3 years" app? I figured more than 3 years, b/c I was a permanent resident of NC the whole time, so my voting/driving/property credentials never switched and my folks lived here the whole time...not sure if I should call and ask and risk reminding them that I didn't live in the state for 9 months out of the year from 04-08 🙄 though they definitely know that already....

AHHH this is the app I care about most -- don't wanna screw it up

yep that's what I'm doing

How big of a deal for an OOSer get this secondary? Or most OOS applicants get it?

Congrats ya'll! I'm getting antsy -- do you think they're giving secondaries/interviews to IS applicants on a rolling basis? I'm leaning towards yes.. I didn't get their email saying they've received my app until July 20th.. I wish I had more patience for these things haha

Thanks caniac.

Also, how do you insern an electronic photo there?

I had this problem too--I couldn't select anything in the box or insert a picture anywhere in the document. I'm using Word 2000 I think. I called the office today, and they said we can either attach it to the email or mail in a physical picture with our other snail mail materials, whichever is easier.

Also, I'm with the email supp/photo mail residency/technicals consensus.

Any IS people that still haven't gotten confirmation of their primary being sent in?? I was verified on 7/24 and I still have no acknowledgment from them that I exist :-(

yea I still haven't heard anything. Based on the posts from previous years it does look like people got secondaries on more of a rolling basis. so I'm hoping this doesn't mean we're out.

i think its a big deal, and an even bigger deal to get an interview.

look back a page or two, oos'ers were discussing it earlier

IS, received my secondary today. Guess that means interview.

thanks. If ~3% of OS applicants get interviews, what's percentage of those that get accepted?

I would think about every second interviewed OSer receives an acceptance letter, but that's just a guess

OOS, had pretty much counted myself out after everyone else got their secondaries a few days ago, but mine just came this afternoon.😎

😀 Got mine this afternoon too (OOS)! 😀

Received a secondary invite as well. AMCAS verified early july, confirmation email from UNC on July 20th.

Got my secondary invite today (Aug 11th) @ 4:47 pm.

(i'm OOS)

zomg w00t 🙂 I got rejected from mayo and U Wash; so this is a nice boost of confidence for me 😀

whooo! Time to fill this out... hopefully I'll be one of those 3.8% of OOSers who get an interview! :xf:

I think that's the general trend; 50% chance of getting accepted if you get an interview. It seems like the schools that don't follow this are the exception to the rule.

So maybe I'm being slow here... but as an out-of-state candidate.. i don't have to do ANY of the residency forms right? (I'm a citizen).

It's not quite clear what OOSers should do... I'm assuming it'd be very silly to fill out anything other than:
1. Supplemental app
2. Tech standards thing.

Is that right? Anyone know?

Are reapplicants automatically invited for interviews as well when they receive secondary applications? It sounded as if that they might not.... does anyone know?

I don't think it makes a difference if you are a reapplicant or not as far as the interview goes. On the supplemental instructions, it says, if you're in-state, when you complete your secondary, they will contact you for an interview. Out of state-ers will get reviewed again. I'm a reapplicant, and last year I didn't get a secondary.. in their invitation email, they just said to make sure I fill out the reapplicant essays as well.

I hope so.. I was a bit baffled by this

"The reapplication process takes somewhat longer than the initial application process. We will contact you as soon as we have made a decision about offering you an interview."

Under their reapplicant section.

Are you instate or out of state? I think/hope that's the distinction..

Here's what it says on the supplemental instructions:
INTERVIEWS FOR IN-STATE APPLICANTS

After we have acknowledged receipt of your supplemental materials, you will be contacted by the Interview Coordinator, via email, regarding the scheduling of your interviews.

INTERVIEWS FOR OUT-OF-STATE APPLICANTS
Supplemental applications are sent to all qualified out-of-state applicants who meet our criteria. Once we receive the supplemental application and the required fee, all materials will be reviewed and the applicant will then be considered for an interview. Those applicants selected will be contacted for scheduling their interviews. This process does take longer—please be patient with us.

So this is a bit more random...but does anybody have a sense of whether they weight primary care a whole lot more than research, or even more at all really? Obviously they're ranked quite a bit higher in it (#2), but they're still #20 in research too.

So I talked this over with the medical student that works in the lab (Duke's curriculum req's your 3rd year to be in research), that pretty much every state school is going to emphasize the patient care a lot.. but for UNC and some other state schools (for instance, Ohio State), they will also emphasize their research too.. so I think it's just weighted about the same with them. You should just talk about what you really want to do.. do patient care or be a clinician scientist. For ECU on the other hand.. primary care is huge.

Anyone know anything more specifically for UNC than this?

I am not a med student at unc (senior in the school of public health this year), but know that research as an undergrad at UNC is as much a part of your education as you want it to be. In Public Health Nutrition (my major), students are required to complete 2 years of research with a faculty mentor. I've also completed an additional semester with the Dept Neurology for a service learning class in AIDS research. I know that that particular project also works with MD students. The nutrition program has PhD students, but I think there are some MD students who are involved in the international projects (nutrition and HIV/breastfeeding guidelines, etc). The MD/PhD program is obviously closely linked with research, but is certainly not the only way to be involved in research if you want to be. And with Duke so close, there are a lot of collaborative studies ongoing.

Taken from the "Why UNC?" thread:
I do NOT go to UNC but my fiance and best friends do...

--it is definitely primary-care oriented. That's not to say they don't have strong departments in surgery and other fields because they do, but there is definitely a PC emphasis. You will do 6 week-long experiences at a primary care physician's office in your first two years, which my friends thought were good experiences for a week or two but were excessive. FM is 6 weeks, Peds 8 weeks, IM 8 weeks with an additional 4 weeks of outpatient IM.

Taken from the "Why UNC?" thread:

This is all good to know. That PC-heavy curriculum is changing a little bit thoguh: peds is going to be shorter (4 or 6 weeks) and psych is going to be 6... I'm not sure what all other changes there are, but just worth knowing perhaps.

Even given that, it looks like we can't ignore primary care with UNC.

sameee. did you notice that for every interview slot there were 4 available? that can't be right..or it would be four people/session?

well for some morning interviews, there were actually 8 slots available, others were 4. keep in mind, there's also afternoon interviews. Personally, the smaller the group the better!

so I emailed in my application on the 13th, but just put my residency form in the mail this morning (was on a business trip and had to look up my taxes from last year when I got home). When did you get a link to schedule interviews? Was it upon receipt of the residency form or when you emailed in your app?

I turned in everything august 11th and then I got the email today for the interview link. You probably have to have everything submitted for the interview invite

this may sound like i know nothing at all, but are interview groups at every school that small??

i guess it'd make sense if they interview 4 times a week from sept to march, but still..😱

For anyone who is OOS and has already submitted their secondary:

Do they send you an email when they have received everything and you are complete? I am super paranoid about my stuff getting lost in the mail or them not getting my supplemental because of some technical glitch or something.:scared:

I turned mine in last wednesday and haven't gotten a confirmation yet.

I got an email from them sometime last week saying they had my stuff.

Anyone know if they still have interview slots left in Sept?

I am IS and was verified on 8/12 and I really really hope to get some secondary love from UNC... sighs.

Lol I am IS and was verified around 7/12....it took until 8/14 for me to get a secondary

Anybody else have trouble setting an interview appointment today? I felt that they provided the wrong URL; it seems it leads to the administrator control page for the entire system.

I got an email stating my secondary was received yesterday. Do they send another one stating your app. is complete? How long after the completion do they give an email about interview dates?

Emailed in my secondary last wednesday i think...mailed in Secondary forms (from NC) on the 17th. Received a "Complete" email the morning of the 18th and an interview email the afternoon of the 18th. Still can't log into the interview site but the admissions office said to try again later...
