Hmm, everyone may be reading too much into these background check emails. I was accepted at three schools on the list and am waiting for post-interview decisions at a few others, and I only got one background check email from AMCAS and one from Certiphi. Are people thinking that the number of emails they get from AMCAS corresponds to the # of times your background info is requested by the schools on the list?

Yeah, agreed, I am into three w/ it and only got two emails (one I didn't even notice)... then again, I am still yet to find the email stanford claimed to send about my interview invite...

Does anyone know what the post interview acceptance rate here is? The MSAR lists the number of students interviewed and the number that matriculated but doesn't specify the number accepted.

From 2007:

5532 applied, 938 interviewed, 234 were accepted, 153 enrolled

This is from that Edeurs site that everyone's been citing.

Penn gave us this on interview day. This is from the last cycle (start Fall 2009).

6215 applied, 852 interviewed, 218 accepted. (14% interview....25% interviewees accepted). It's a tough game. That includes waitlist movement as well.

Wow that really is tough. Thanks for the info!

Have they stopped handing out invites? It sounded as though that were the consensus last week...

yes because they got it from US News, which charges for the information... but we still got it anyways! :meanie:

US News (Fall 2008): 5919 applied, 866 interviewed, 222 were accepted, 154 enrolled

I do recall the statistics are very different for in-state applicants (~49% acceptance rate for them). But this might be due to the fact that they want people they accept to come, since they do say that they do not give an advantage for in-state. I have analyzed this a lot, since I live 10 minutes away but in NJ.

Actually. Check out their website or MSAR. They explicitly state they give in-state applicants a slight preference in the process. I've analyzed this before, but I'll do it again...haha love numbers 🙂 Sort of a big difference if you break it down. It's easier to get an interview, more likely to be accepted if your IS (you're also more likely to enroll). I'm IS but I'm not holding my breath per my terrible student interview.

In state: 622 applied, 147 interviewed, 57 were accepted, 48 enrolled (24% interviewed, 39% interviewees accepted, 84% enrolled)

OOS: 5297 applied, 719 interviewed, 165 were accepted, 106 enrolled
(14% interviewed, 23% interviewees accepted, 64% enrolled)

Anyone else get this status update? It is not saying anything different from the previous update about being deffered but I was just curious. It could just be a reply to the update letter that I sent a few weeks ago that is now listed on website as one of my other letters besides my committee letter.

APPLICATION STATUS: Complete - Additional Application Update

Your application continues to be reviewed but there is no change in your status. Reviews will continue.

ALL ADMISSIONS DECISIONS WILL BE ANNOUNCED BY MARCH 15.

Not to burst anyone's bubble. But there are only three more scheduled interview days. Tomorrow.... and Wednesday and Friday of next week.

 that's the exact opposite of my line of thought, but good for you for having a good attitude.

Well judging from your MDApps it's not as if you're in a poor situation with acceptances at UChicago, Sinai, and Cornell. You're a med school all-star, but you can't win them all.

Well, if they don't interview me, they're totally going to be missing out

and mayo and vandy and ucsf

so my status changed to
"Your application continues to be reviewed but there is no change in your status. Reviews will continue."
from before saying they have looked at my app and have not made a decision, it seems to me its basically the same message, or am I missing something?

So you're telling me I still have a chance?

Feeling a little like Lloyd Christmas here...

🤣

You've succinctly summed up medical school admissions, I think.

Interview feedback survey. You select a date of your interview. The last one was January 22nd.

One of my friends is interviewing on the 27th. I guess things aren't as bleak as they seem.

Hmm interesting. I work at Penn so I have special access to the med school website. Look at the med student portal (google it) and you'll find a link where Penn Med students can sign up to lead tours/volunteer on interview days. If you login to sign up (need PennKey) the only remaining days are on the 20th and 22nd. If they are interviewing on the 27th these are extra tacked on days outside of what was initially scheduled.

Interesting, has anyone actually just called admissions?

Scratch that. They seemed to have added January 29th as a date as well. I assume they're adding days to accommodate for extra candidates that they couldn't fit into the regular schedule but wanted to interview. Also, seeing as how Penn isn't rolling if you interview say, tomorrow you still have as much chance as a interviewee from September.

Well on the original admissions page they say that interviews go from Ocotber to Feb, so you never know... obviously I'm not holding my breath, but there's always a chance...

Wow, ha, now I sound like Lloyd Christmas...

how much does penn care about the basic sciences requirements?

i asked them once, and they told me they only recommend that you complete all the basic sciences courses but they are not required. but in all honestly though, they probably care a lot right?

Penn actually doesn't have any set requirements. They advise taking a courseload with broad science emphasis in the areas of chemistry, biology, physics, math, and english/communication. But, no set requirements. In other words, if you say didn't take a lab course with Organic Chemistry it'll still be OK. There is no required Bio 101, Chem 101, Physics 101, etc. that have to be on your transcript. If you were granted an interview... chances are you satisfied their general requirements for admission. So, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Does anyone know the email address where we send our thank notes ?

Thanks and good luck!

ooh, i want to send a thank you note to myself. except I'd make it really really mean!

incidentally, ksmi117, congrats on your most recent application developments...

LOL. So sleepy....worth it to send LOI? I just finished my last interview (12 in total) and I've decided I want to stay in Philly and go to Penn. Should I just provide updates....or is it OK to say that I'd definitely enroll if I'm accepted.

Thanks!

so...this thread will probably be pretty dead until march

hey so I'm interviewing tomorrow, which they told me in my invitation email was the last day of interviews. Got the invite last week, I was complete the first possible day you could be complete. Does a late interview invite indicate they were less interested in my application? I had pretty much assumed rejection. I.e. are earlier interview candidates more likely to be accepted than those who interview late? I feel like I was just at the bottom of a iffy people and was just lucky to slip through.

I would say that it is not rolling admissions, so you are just as likely to get an acceptance.
