Is anyone interviewing on 2/4.... I checking the weather and I need to buy a winter/suit coat. I'll appreciate some weather/dress advice (i've always lived in warm climates). Do guys wear long johns around this time in Rochester or would suit pants alone be warm enough? Accuweather says it'll feel like 19F on 2/4.

Thanks and goodluck to everyone waiting out decisions and those yet to interview/hear back...

To be honest, I'm from Minnesota and I've had snow at all of my interviews, including Rochester, and I can tell you that you don't need a specific dress coat or what not. The entire tour is indoors, and most of the people in my group just wore normal winter coats (just something to keep from getting wet to and from). If you really want one and feel like throwing down some cash, go for it, but otherwise just wear whatever coat you have over your suit. It'll be fine. And 19F really isn't that cold, you'll be fine in pants haha.

I go to the U of R now and you'll definitely be fine in normal pants, its not that cold and you're inside the whole time anyway and its really warm in the med center. I wouldn't get a new coat, I wore a skirt and I was fine! Good luck at your interview!

I live in Rochester and last week when temperatures where in the high thirties and forties, you would have thought it was spring. People were out and about in sweatshirts and shorts. Honestly, due to the fact Rochester is right on the lake it doesn't get that cold, we only have a lot of lake effect snow. When I had my interview I wore just a suit and dress pant with only boxers underneath them...you defiantly don't need long johns. I also wore a suit coat, but your inside all day so you don't really need to worry.

Seriously you guys are freaking me out. I'm from Miami and when it drops to 60s, people bring out their entire winter wardrobe..:laugh:
It's 55F today, due to a coldfront, and that's cold around here, high 60s & low 70s are the norm this time here.

It's great that the tour is indoors, and to be safe I'll get a coat for the times I'll be outdoors waiting for a cab or something. I'm still undecided about the long johns (i think i'll buy a couple just in case). Obviously, you guys have great intentions and ur advice is great, but we seem to have a vast difference in temperature perception..😀😀😀 For me, 32F is like absolute zero, I mean water freezes, so anything close to that, let alone below that, is super cold and hypothermia inducing..:scared::scared: Hopefully it warms, somehow, by next week..:xf::xf:

Thanks guys for ur advice and best of luck with ur applications too!!!

This is my second winter up here and honestly, being outside for short amounts of time isn't bad at all. I'm from nowhere near here (not FL, though!) and am not a fan of cold, but I'm fine. My class even went outdoor ice skating at the beginning of January when it was in the single digits and everyone survived 🙂 I really wouldn't waste your money on long johns (unless you just have that burning desire), and I'd hate for you to spend the money on a coat (that might be more legit, though). My boyfriend has to be outside a good portion of the day and he does wear long johns, but he says he really doesn't even need them for the outside... it's just cold when he gets back in his car!

Thanks for the advice, I'll ditch the long johns 👎thumbdown👎 given the unanimous consensus above. Also given that I've never worn long johns before, they may be uncomfortable and distracting during the interview..

I would also hate to buy a coat, just for Rochester, if I don't need it. It's been an expensive application cycle and I quit my job months back (to graduate on time), so I have to be financially prudent. I guess I could double up on undershirts and together with the long sleeve shirt and suit, that should keep me warm enough. I'll keep a couple of really hot cayenne or jalapeno peppers as a fail-safe measure :laugh:, it's amazing how quickly they warm u up...

Thanks again to all of you

not sure if anyone remembers, but is rochester straight pass/fail in the non-clinical/ACE stuff in years 1 and 2, or do they have high pass/honors etc?

it's just pass/fail

Basic science is pass fail, but ACE is honors/high pass etc. since it counts as our family medicine rotation.

so i have my interview for rochester in mid-feb. initially i was excited. But in these last couple of weeks Ive been narrowing down what schools I interview at--trying to pick only those I would really want to go to if accepted. Im still not sure about Rochester...I think more than anything its the location--its 7 hours away from my fam in bklyn. I like what I've read about the curriculum. should i just go and see if i like it, or save money since I've already narrowed it down to 3 schools

Up to you. If you need to be near your fam, it's not close, but JFK flights are cheap and fast via JetBlue. It's a great school/curriculum but it all depends on you, your financial situation, and what you would realistically do pending an acceptances. Good luck and congrats on being considered!

Like ZP said, if you want to be close to your family and Rochester is just too far for you, then that's your answer. My family is about a 13.5 hour drive from me, so I know how it is. But, it sounds like you like the school enough to come check it out, so I would suggest doing it. You don't want to be thinking what if!

You don't want to limit the possibilities, unless you've already been accepted to a place higher on your list than Rochester. It certainly doesn't hurt to attend the interview. I had a really good experience there.

I drove to Rochester and it took about 5 hours.

hey, does anyone know what kind of wait list movement Rochester has?

There isn't really much wait list movement because they tend to over accept as it is. I believe only 3 people moved off the list that were on SDF last year.

Totally depends on the year. Plus, and I know this is obvious, SDN is only a sampling. Like on the interview threads, maybe 25 people say they got interviews... but obviously hundreds are interviewed. So, all I'm saying is there is no good way of knowing from year to year what will happen.

Whats the turn around time on post interview decisions?

So I interviewed 1/11 and I heard that the admissions committee meets on the second Tuesday of each month (is that right?) so I'm hoping for a decision this week! Anyone else interview around then?

Just canceled my 02/19 interview and withdrew my application. Hope someone great gets my interview slot!

I interviewed with you. I was looking at past posts and it seems people found out whether they were accepted or wait-listed on Wed. So, as much as I want to hear back today, we will probably hear our fate tomorrow. :scared:

Uggg is it tomorrow yet? I hate this waiting, I kinda wish I didn't know that I'd find out tomorrow. It kind of makes it even worse.

So are acceptances by phone and wait list by e-mail? And rejections are probably snail mailed right?

I am so nervous!

Good luck tomorrow guys (if it is decision day).

Acceptances will appear on the status page and may or may not be with a call. Not sure about an email?

I was waitlisted and saw it on the status page and received an email shortly after asking me to confirm whether or not I would like to be placed on the waitlist. (Obviously, I confirmed)

Rejection.. no idea?

Thanks for the info! Now I am going to be obsessively checking my status page and my phone tomorrow. 😱

I have a test to worry about...so I'm not going to check till after that. 😛

Previously, post-interview rejections were sent out via snail mail only. Not sure what they do this year. It seems people got a phone call, followed by an email, for acceptance. :luck:

So I haven't heard anything yet today and I'm hoping it's because today is not the decision day and not because I was rejected....

Has anyone else heard anything today?

aww, I interviewed the same day as you, things aren't looking good for me then I guess. I didn't hear anything today.

hopefully we'll hear today, waitlist or not, I just want to end the waiting, I interviewed on 1/08

Does anyone know if the waitlist e-mails come out on the same day as the acceptances? Or how long after the rejection letters (if thats even how they tell you) get sent?

Also, for people who were waitlisted/accepted/rejected when did your status page change?

Sorry to keep bugging everyone about this, I'm just so sick of waiting! Has anyone else heard lately?

Last year, waitlist email and status page change (invite --> waitlist) were pretty much simultaneous. For the unlucky ones (rejected), there was no status page change. Keep in mind that the adcom meet every second and third Tuesday of the month, so if for any reason your file did not get reviewed this past Tuesday, then you should hear from them next week.

Oh ok, I didn't know it was the 2nd AND 3rd Tuesday, I feel a bit better now. At least its not for sure that I'm rejected yet 🙂

Does anyone have any idea about what percentage of interviewed applicants are accepted, waitlisted, or rejected?

2007 data:
3701 applied, 724 interviewed, 282 were accepted, 101 enrolled

Anybody hear anything recently? I interviewed on 1/15 so I guess I should be hearing fairly soon.

Interviewed 1/11...have not heard a word. Makes me sad, I really liked this school and thought they like me.🙁

How much WL movement is there? Do they rank the WL?

My status page still say invite. When did you seen yours change? The wait list at Rochester is not ranked, so it is anyone's game. Also, I believe only 3 people on SDN(probably more not on this site) moved off the wait list last year. As you can see Rochester over accepts as it is, so there is not much wait list movement.

there are a lot of waitlists it seems, maybe the committee was in a bad mood yesterday, at least I am in good company😳 good luck to those who have yet to hear back.

I last checked a few days ago - invite. Checked again today - WL.

This is just my speculation but maybe decisions have shifted towards mostly WLs because Rochester has filled almost all the acceptance slots they want to give? In that case, things are not looking good for the people who haven't gotten their decisions yet.

So is Rochester one of the schools where, to get in off the WL you have to bombard them with LOIs to get one of a handful of openings? In that case, I may just give up and count this one as a loss.

Pretty much. They said to me if you are wait listed it is important to show you still have interest in them because it is unraked. BTW I just got wait listed.

Wait listed by status page

At least it looks like I'm in good company. 🙁

To all of those who got waitlisted, keep your head up! There's always a chance.

And I wouldn't say you have to "bombard" the office w/ letters. But, it is a good plan to at least send a letter saying hey I'll still really interested in your school, I hope you can be really interested in me. Also, if you have any updates, it never hurts to include those.
