Too long. I can't remember exactly but I want to say like over 200. Definitely more than there are seats.

EDIT: Checked last years thread. It was 223.

That is a lot of people. I wonder why they insist on wait listing so many people. Although, I have heard that despite there typically being 40-50 people accepted from the wait list there have been sporadic years when they have taken far fewer and far more than that number.

I'm interviewing on April 21st so everyone who is waiting, it's probably on me. Sorry! 😱

Anything to expect? I'm not going in too optimistic since I'm the last possible interview slot but at least it's a shot. Are there any seats left in the class or am I interviewing for a spot on the waitlist?

I know there are many people who are already "on hold." For what it's worth, I would think you would have as much chance as the "on hold" people. But it's hard to tell how much of a chance THOSE people have.

Keepin' :xf: for all of us.

Speaking of "on hold" applicants, did they have this many "on hold" people the previous years as well? I heard from an M1 that on hold is considered a good sign. But it seems as if they are placing everyone who didn't get accepted or rejected into that pile. Any thoughts anyone?

I think that everyone that is not accepted or rejected must be "on hold" by process of elimination. I don't think there is anything else that you can be until the waitlist fires up in a week or so. I would love to know the number of applicants in that position. Good luck to everyone with the decisions coming at the end of this week. For better or worse the wait is close to ending (or being extended for a year).

I have no idea how this year compares to past years, but I am under the impression that the "on hold" category is rather large. It probably consists of roughly 300 applicants (very rough guess) because they create the 200+ long waitlist from the applicants in this category. I believe their final meeting is Friday, and those of us in holding should hear sometime next week. Does anyone know if they send another email to those that were on hold regarding final decisions or do they just send decision via mail?

So basically they're going to transfer everyone on the "on hold"/no decision list to the waitlist?

I do not know for sure, but from what I understand is that they give out the remaining acceptances and create the ranked waitlist with the applicants on hold at the final meeting this friday. I believe they do also send out some rejections as well. So being in the "on hold" category at this point means they will decide Friday if you are accepted, rejected or where you rank on the waitlist. It appears that many of us "on hold" end up on the waitlist hopefully in the top 40-50. Someone please correct me if I am mistaken.

I didn't receive an e-mail last year, just snail mail.

I too think that there are a few acceptances and a few rejections (probably OOS), but the vast majority will be waitlist. Personally I'd rather the waitlist be 80 people long, reject everyone else. Doesn't seem fair to give false hope this late in the game.

Just like everyone else, I am not sure what to think but I have some ideas. I agree with Titan335 that the "on hold" list is probably very large. Since they have been putting people on hold since January, I wouldn't be surprised if it were even as many as 350+ people.
Lets speculate...if they interview maybe 10 people (I have heard of itnerview days with as few as 8 and as many as 15) a day for 3 days a week, then that is 30 people a week. Since interviews are going through this week, they have had roughly 15 weeks since January to interview people. Thats roughly 450 interviews total since January. Now it gets even harder to speculate how many have received what letter, but it is my guess that a large majority are being put on hold (maybe 80-90%). I certainly have not heard of many acceptances or rejections and only a few got accepted after being put on hold. Take all this together and I think it is reasonable to say there might be 350+ people on hold (again this is purely speculation).
With those numbers in mind and assuming the wait list stays roughly the same size as previous years (I can't think of any reason why the wait list would be expanded since it is already more than adequate), there might be a fairly large number of rejection letters going out after this Friday. They certainly only have room to accept a few dozen more (if even that many) and the rest will have to be wait listed or rejected 🙁.
What do you guys think?

We can minimize the speculation:

This is all good information. I hate to say it again since it is such an unpopular idea around here BUT they have not in previous years interviewed this late into the spring. I take that as meaning they have conducted a larger total number of interviews which is also what I have heard from Nelson. You can mark that off to just typical admissions committee talk, but i think they have interviewed more than these numbers would indicate.

oh Xslim you are going to make me do it, aren't you? Fine
my data prorated for this year:
478 interviews avg. per year / 18 weeks (October through end of March minus 3 weeks of holidays) = 26.56 interviews per interviewing weeks.
this year 3 extra weeks = 80 extra interviews = 16.7% more interviews for the same class size of 165.

Last year's waitlist: 223 (according to letter they sent out last year) plus 16.7% = 260 applicants on the waitlist this year

Edit: QED

Nice. That is some precise calculating. So do you think the "on hold" people are less than 300 deep? What do you think the breakdown will be for those of us still waiting?

If you look at my previous posts in the ETSU thread, you will see why I am EXTREMELY attracted to you right now.

In addition to having more applications this year, the class size was also expanded by 15 since last year so maybe some of the extra interviews were to account for that. Just my two cents. Good job on those calculations 👍

Hey guys I see you are wondering about the Master's of Pharmacology program. I am in it feel free to ask any questions. Also the answer to the first one is no one has gotten in yet, we will hear when everyone else does next week.

At this point do you feel like they will give out any acceptances? Or will it be only waitlists/rejections?

I personally think a few of us will be accepted in the final pool of acceptances that go out on Friday and that the rest will be on the waitlist. Where on the list I am not sure, but I would suspect in a good position.

Oh okay, I was more talking about just in general - not necessarily the masters program. But it does seem like you think that some more people will be accepted (everyone included)?

Oh in general. Yes from what I know about the process there are always spots given out on the last day. Usually from the people that are at the head of the list when they make the list from the people on the "on hold".

I am interested in what you think of the Pharmacology program. Obviously, you are waiting to hear back from the medical school but how has the first year of the program gone? What you expected going in? Better or worse than expected? Any news on plans for the program moving forward?

I need a GPA boost most of all to improve my application, so am definitely interested in this type of program if I don't come off any waitlists this application cycle.

The first year has gone probably about as well as one could except for a first year program. Things were pretty unorganized at times and the thesis process here at the end was pretty much a disaster, mainly because people in charge had no idea what all it entailed. But at the same time the professors knew the program was going through growing pains and usually very helpful in adjusting to requests. I feel like I have learned quite a bit and have actually enjoyed the program. I feel much more prepared for med school now than I did before.

We actually had a meeting today where we discussed possible changes and ways to improve for next year. From what was discussed it looks like most issues from this year are being addressed. There will now be 3 grades for each semester as opposed to the 1 we got this year so that admissions committees will be able to see grades before the end of Feb. like this year. It looks like they are aiming for a class size between 15-20.

How difficult was the curriculum? I know it varies from one exam to the next, but on average how much time was spent studying per night? Is the curriculum made such that each student competes against each other? Thanks for popping in and answering our questions! 🙂

Yes thank you very much, very helpful. That is good to hear they are addressing your main concerns for next year. I also am curious how the course load compares to medical school (if you can speculate). Do they offer any advice or help with your application to medical school or is the application process mainly up to you? Thanks again.

I would say that most people studied quite a bit every night. During the summer I would say people were studying the most because that is when you have tests every 2 weeks so it is a constant stream of information. I would guess during that time people were studying about 5 hours a night (I could be way off on this). During the fall you add in more classes but the tests are more spread out I would say people probably averaged 3-4 a night but there were weeks when you do less if you wanted with some where I know no one studied. Same with the spring, until you get to writing the thesis, at that point there is basically no class and you are working on it all the time. And competition is strongly discouraged. We were constantly encouraged to work together and help each other out. We have an office where everyone has a desk and we usually study/hang out in there together. In fact at the meeting today someone mentioned a ranking system for next year and everyone in the room said it was a terrible idea. People's grades were not based on how they compared to others.

As far as comparing to medical school. It is less work load but you are at a significant disadvantage because you do not have physiology and often times you have to study that separately just to understand what you are trying to learn. M2 have told me that Pharmacology is one of their harder classes (I think 2nd behind pathophysiology which is what Foundations is so you are basically taking the 2 hardest M2 classes if the people that told me that are telling the truth).

Also all of our tests are multiple choice, short answer, and essay

Think those are all the questions I can come up with for now. I am sure others will have more especially after we all hear back next week. Thanks again, good luck with your thesis and application.

Thanks for the input coffee. Do you recommend the program or do you think it might be better to pursue another post bacc? My GPA is a problem as well. I was actually thinking about taking a year of classes at the University of Memphis to help raise my GPA if my waitlists don't work out either. Do you recommend the pharmacy program over that? The fact that this program seems to not have many grades strikes me as a question mark.

Ah the mysteries of the adcom...a friend of my friend's got in last year with a 3.0 GPA and I'm sure most of us waiting have far higher GPAs than that so sometimes I really do think this is just a crapshoot.

I personally don't see why another program would be better than this one if you are planning on attending UT. I can get back to you with a better answer next week when I know how many of us got in and what position the ones that didn't are on the waitlist.

Between the Pharmacology program and taking a year of class at Memphis, from my experience the Pharm program would be a much better option if you are willing to spend the money. As I think making an A or B in an actual med school class is better than making an A at Memphis and from talking to faculty and admissions people I think this is a widely held belief. Plus this program will make you better prepared for med school when you eventually enroll. I took a few classes at Memphis (including a graduate pharmacology class they offered) and made A's in every one but was not prepared for the classes I took here.

Wow love this school! I hope to have good news headed my way this Friday. Good luck to everyone. :luck:

Anyone else getting really nervous right about now? I think my ears are burning.

Haha. I feel the same way. I can hear them talking about me now...

"The Flash applied last year, didn't get in, didn't change a thing in his application, actually his GPA went down .05. Why should we let him in this year?"

**Crickets**

REJECT!

Yeah, I'm compulsively checking my e-mail every hour. Anyone know if they will e-mail us the decisions prior to mailing?

Every hour? I changed the settings on my phone to check email every 10 minutes! I was wondering too whether to expect the unofficial acceptance email from Mrs. Harris. I was told that the letters would be mailed out by Friday next week but that's an excruciatingly long time!

Hey guys just letting you know I got my acceptance letter today. Haven't talked to anyone else in the program yet so I will keep you guys up to date.

Did you get your acceptance via regular mail or e-mail and was your acceptance as a result of yesterday's meeting?

No email. Just a letter in the mail today. It isn't a full admission packet (letter said I would get that when I completed the program).

They should have told us before we applied that the UT Memphis Med College is now 5 years instead of 4...
By the way it seems that this MP program is "in fashion" at other med schools too, looks like this has been a general tendency this application cycle.
It is frustrating to watch how people who afford going into their special Master's of Pharmacology program are being favored in the admissions process...

I think this reply is very unprofessional. The vast majority of students in this program incurred loan debt to the detriment of their families. I assure you, personal wealth had less to do with this outcome than diligent hard work.

We were "favored" only compared to people on the alternate list and I would like to know what other people did that would put them in a better position than us?

Also if you think this is a tendency sure it is and I am glad schools are doing it. It gives fridge candidates who are willing to put in the work a chance to prove themselves against medical school classes.

In addition to that we didn't afford as much as we all took out 20K plus loans to afford the program and sent ourselves (and our families) into debt.

Apparently people with Higher GPAs, MCATs, and leadership qualities are getting favored this year as well. I hate that it is coming to that.*

ok... then they may want to state openly " the lengths of medical training program at this particular med school will last 5 years" so that we, the "others", will get into your special master from the very first beginning. This way people would know exactly what to expect, there is no need to waste one year to find out mid towards end of the cycle that there are not equal chances of admission at school X because you, in the MP, are more "fridge" candidates than others.
There might be some of those "other" people that you are talking about who got master's degrees before they applied to your school but they would not be seen as worthy (or whatever) as you are since that degree was not obtained at your school and the 20K (or more) went to another school instead of going into your special MP.

The MCAT and GPA numbers that you are "kidding" about went up since October.
If you need any updates on that I can e-mail them to you, there is no need for you to get tired of searching through my posts to find something to say. 😱*

It probably wouldn't be fair if they were to admit everyone who enrolled in the MP program, but people who excelled and made As in the program should be viewed more favorably everything else being equal. I mean affirmative action isn't fair, but it's there for a reason.

hi! ive been watching this thread for a while and just wanted to say good luck for all of those waiting for their letters next week like me 🙂

as for sheiladoc - im not part of the MP program at UT but i honestly have no idea what your argument is trying to say. majority of the people in that program applied last year and didnt get in (if not all) so they decided to get the MP at UT to prove to the board they can handle classes as vigorous as med school and if they did well in that program then OF COURSE they deserve to get in ...i mean they just spent A YEAR taking hard classes and paying 20k from loans ...sounds like a a whole year of med school before they even started

its not favoritism, its fair and square honestly. Im actually surprised to read that they had to wait this long before they even heard... but ofcourse that seems to be reasonable since the grading system made them wait til feb. for results

I think that she made her argument very clear...it seems to me that this MP program is almost like a prep year before med school or smtg like that. = more debt & more years to spend before the med school starts. Yay!
I think that someone in a grad program at the school where he/she plans to apply are seen much better than those coming from anywhere else in terms of having more chances. You get to know the instructors better, their expectances, ...and many other things that may increase your chances to get admission. Now, this IS competition that they would make to someone coming from another institution with a similar master's. I am not sure that I made myself clear, but I think that this is Sheila's point.

Hopefully I will get accepted this year :xf:and will not have to go through this MP :scared:
Time is running so slow...I'll get nuts until next Friday!!!

thanks for that...makes more sense. i agree that there would be a competition between these two applicants from different backgrounds with the UT MP applicant being more favored if grades were about equal....but then again the candidate from the other school's program would be more favored there if the ut applicant were to apply there

Wow, definitely was not referring to just you, and I have definitely not referred to previous posts. I just think that complaining about someone else going through an arduous program to better themselves getting props for it.
