Yup, also the whole process = huge crap shoot.

Maybe thats exactly why El Paso passed on you, they thought you would get in elsewhere and wouldn't attend their school.

well i think some schools are just looking for particular things in your app.
you're a great applicant, but maybe they feel not a fit for there school?
i don't think they pass students because they think that you would not attend their school...Tech-el paso is an AMAZING school...why would they sell themselves short?

who knows, its also luck!
with that said, good luck! :luck:

I'm not saying they are selling themselves short, but I've heard adcoms say they do take into account a students likelihood to attend. In all seriousness why aren't schools like El Paso filled with 45 MCAT applicants then?

I loved El Paso when I was there, absolutely loved it. There are some negatives with the new curriculum and such, but not a bad school. I wasn't singling out El Paso on purpose, but all schools in general.

yeah possibly
i still feel like those 45 applicants would be at least invited to interviews...maybe we don't see them because they decline even attending the interview OR they don't even apply there ....there seems to be a social stigma that comes with el paso...although i love it
oh OR maybe we dont see 45 Mcat holders there because they don't even exist 😛 lol
but seriously though, there has only been 1 class...and i do believe that that class has someone sitting in it who got a 37 mcat!

actually they probably select applicants who fit their mission statement and that might want to serve in underserved spanish speaking areas in the future

yeah possibly
although i must say, i never expressed such intent (i don't even speak Spanish actually) & i pre matched there
but yes a crap shoot indeed...also,a numbers game and a lot deals with timing and luck

but back to UTMB...anyone from nov20 prematch there yet?

The closest I can come to a logical explanation is that perhaps their goal is to train doctors for west texas (students with ties to west texas that will most likely practice there)....perhaps they are selecting mostly students who fit this criterion.

hey,

no word yet here either. doesnt seem like they sent anything out yesterday.

how does the match work? will schools report everything to TMDSAS before Feb 1st, and we'll be able to see it at midnight?

or do schools just let you know via email any time after feb 1st?

thanks in advance

you rank the schools on TMDSAS...the schools rank you
computer system does some magic and hopefully you will match to your number 1...they report it on TMDSAS...not via email from what i understand

thanks.

and all this happens between jan 16th and 31st? so on Feb 1st, you know if you've matched or not...

after that, you're on the waitlist?

thanks

That's right, on Feb 1 you will know where you matched to, and you will be waitlisted at any school you ranked higher than the school you matched to.

I'm not sure this is true. I never mentioned this in any of my essays or anywhere else in my application. I was never asked about it in my interviews, and I don't speak Spanish. I was also accepted early here. I'm sure there are a lot of factors that go into it, and this is probably one. However, it certainly is not a deciding factor.

Not sure about this either. I grew up in East TX near Shreveport, Louisiana my entire life, I have zero family in West Texas, and I didn't go to school west of the DFW area.

My story exactly as well and I pre-matched to Tech.

On another note, anyone got any idea when utmb might let out some decisions on scholarships and the like? Do we think it will be before Jan 15th ?

So I was down by campus the other day and got to thinking. Maybe some of the current students can chime in here, but what is the parking like for a first year? Is it all curbside, is there a specific lot or whatever, and how close is it?

From what I gathered, you can pay a small amount (I think around $70 per year or maybe semester?) to park in the curbside student parking. It's just regular curbside parking but it has signs that say 'student parking only' or something similar. These are basically first come first serve I imagine and there are not enough for each student that pays so it's hit or miss. You also have the option to pay a larger amount ($300 something per year?) to park in one of the garages in which case you will always have a spot. Otherwise you're on your own. There is curbside parking around the hospital I think although you'll have to walk quite a few blocks I think.

Yeah that sounds about right.

Thanks guys. Since I'm taking out loans (loans=play money) I might as well go for the garage. 😛

Haha, yeah I am treating it as monopoly money. It never has to be paid back at anytime anyway!

Little note on the garage that I heard from a current student. If you go for this, you always have a guaranteed spot. However, when the school is less packed (such as at night if you head back up to the library) you aren't allowed to park closer on the street in certain areas that we can't park at from 8-5p. You have to park in the garage.

I know that prematch ends Dec 31, but does anyone know if we'll actually here anything from now until then because of the holidays? It would seem as though UTMB would be closed until after new years which would basically mean that no more prematches will be sent out. I'm not sure on this, and I hope that this is not the case. Has anyone called for more info recently?

I called a while ago. They said they're last day of business this year was Dec 18th (last friday).

Pretty sure we're waiting for the match now....

"Individual match results will be posted on the TMDSAS application at 8:00 am (CST) February 1."

Curses! 8am! I wish it were midnight like last year, because I can never sleep before finding out big news... :scared:

I spoke to one of my friends that had her interview on the last interview date, she got a pre-match on Dec. 22nd.

The last interview day at UTMB was the 18th, is the turn around that fast?

Well she told me on the 23rd: "I just got my e-mail yesterday"... and I am pretty sure she had her interview on the 18th bc I had mine on the 4th. So... yea... i am just as confused as everyone else. There seems to be a bit of a difference in what UTMB says and does. Or there could just be delays in people's e-mails.

😕😕😕

For those who have already accepted the offer of UTMB, do we need to turn in anything else before Dec. 31st? In my offer letter, it stated that the Acceptance Form must be turned in by Dec. 4th, which I did. However, on another piece of paper, which has the title "Important Information", it said that "Please sign and return both of the attached forms and return them in the self-addressed postage paid envelope by December 31, 2009." I thought it is just a typo, but I want to make sure that the only things we need to send in before 2010 starts are the Acceptance Form and the Disability Form. Thanks. :scared:

Um....now you got me thinking about it. I dont think so, I turned in everything they sent me.... Man, I can't even remember what I've turned in to what school for what reason anymore! anyone else? I'll look back at my paperwork tomorrow.

We will meet in room 3.320 of the William C. Levin Hall at 9:00am. We will start the morning off giving you the opportunity to speak with current UTMB students and ask any unanswered questions you may have. We will then follow up with a tour of the campus. If there is something specific that you want to see while on the tour, please feel free to ask your guide to show it to you. The dress for this day is casual and comfortable keeping in mind that the weather has been a bit cooler here over the last few days and is expected to be in the 40’s and 50’s. We should finish up around 11:30am.

You may park in the same garage that you used on your interview day.

I would call and make sure your on the list, sounds like they have it all planned out, down to parking codes and everything.

Did anyone who interviewed on the 18th get their TMDSAS school preferences updated with UTMB?

Does anyone know if UTMB still has a decent amount of seats left for the match? Or what percentage of their last class was accepted through the match? I want to rank UTMB pretty high, but only if they have a decent amount of seats left. While at Tech in Lubbock I heard alot of thier class got in through the match, but I didn't hear this from anyone while in Galveston. Thanks for any thoughts ~ match is soon. Goodluck to all.

I don't know the answer but in my opinion you can really out think yourself in ranking schools based on what you think they have open. Just rank your schools based on where you want to go, and you will do fine. As I understand it there really isn't any reason to rank UTMB higher or lower based on real or percieved seats available.

You're right, you're right. I'm just reverting to my psycho-frantic worried state. This process is just soo much fun. Yay hazing. 😀

Has anyone got their eConnect username and password? I called the Office of Enrollment to ask about my transcripts status. They told me they are still behind on that because of the break, but then they told me that I can check on eConnect. I have never received an eConnect account ever since I got accepted. Just wondering if anyone else has got this or it is just me. 😕

Nope, haven't even heard of econnect 😳

Um, should we be sending transcripts already? I'm going to make such a great doctor 🙄 Excuse me patient, what was it we removed last time you came in?

i sent my transcript requests off two days ago... and what is eConnect? I think the transcripts from fall have to be there by 2/5 if i remember right.

Oh, your talking about TMDSAS then?

I graduated back in '08 so I was thinking like the final transcripts for matriculation. I was thinking its awfully early.

no im not talking about tmdsas. the stuff from UTMB that we got for prematch said they need our winter transcript by 2/5 and our spring transcipt sometime in may. do you not have to send more transcripts since you graduated in 08?

Dang, I need to read stuff better I guess. 😳

I just meant I don't have any "new" or "recent" transcripts to send. I know that UTMB needs a set of "official" transcripts from us (apart from the ones they get from TMDSAS) right? But that wouldn't be for a while yet I assume. Guess I gotta look into it. Glad you said something.

I emailed the admissions person for UTMB and she said they do not reserve any spots for the match. In regards to the match, the process is double blind. Therefore the schools don't know where you ranked them and vice versa, so there is no risk in placing a school low because you don't think you can get in. I would rank your schools based on where you want to go. I hope that helps.
