how beastly is this one? anybody care to post prompts?
The University of Toledo College of Medicine is committed to excellence in education which prepares graduates to deliver quality health care. Developing cultural competence is an important goal in our curriculum. Cultural competence is defined as an awareness, understanding and ability to use specific methods to deal effectively with cultural issues and its role in health and health care. Please discuss a life experience in which you feel you demonstrated cultural competence. You may use the back of this page or attach an additional sheet of paper.

could be beastly, but i feel like it's hard to find THE perfect example. so i just talked about an experience i was passionate about that allowed me to step outside my suburbia box.

also HINT for everyone. it says to talk about an experience w/ cultural competence, but not necessarily a clinical cultural competence experience. you might get that impression from their little intro, but i think it'll be much easier and better to write about a general cultural experience.

For the pre-reqs, are you guys including classes that are planned for this upcoming year? I plan on it, but I wanted to see what you guys thought

i only included the prereqs that are the minimum. but if u are planning to take one of those min prereqs senior year, i guess you should put that in. i'd put for grade, "Anticipated A+". haha 😛

or "Future course"

you're call tho.

i find it impossible either way....🙁

Alright, thanks. I think I might put "Planned for Fall 2009" or Spring 2010, whichever it is.

Also, do you guys think that 273 words is long enough for #3? I just wrote that much, and I feel like I answered the question, but since they didn't give a word limit I feel like I should maybe write more...

And for #2, if there isn't anything we need to explain, we don't have to answer it right?

Not sure what #3 is, but I had 216 (way below the allowable limit) on the cultural competency essay last cycle. Quality over quanitity is the way to go.

What kind of general experience do you think would suffice?

For the English requirements, I go to a quarter system school, so my 2 English classes has been good for every other school, including wright state who requires 3 quarters. So would 2 quarters be good enough for Toledo? I do not want to take another English class before I graduate

do u think course number is good enough? or do i have to write out all the detailed name...

i was wondering if anyone knew what the screening requirements were.... just out of curiousity .... cause they gave me a secondary with a gpa in the low 3s and a 34 mcat.

they are very low, thats all i do know. <30 mcat for sure and judging from your gpa failry low on that.

Does anyone know how friendly they are to OOS ? In terms of how many non and in-state people they accept?

62/176 were OOS....they are pretty friendly thats a very high rate for an OOS public school.

OK please correct me if i am wrong!!!

Cultural competence to me is anything you can do to make someone from another culture feel at ease.

Is this right????!!!!

sounds good to me 🙂

I'm really not sure how to answer the prompt. I live in a pretty diverse neighborhood, but to be honest I don't really know of any good examples of where I showed I knew something about other cultures. I just tend to not assume things and treat other people as human beings. And I ask questions when I don't know something.

I have the same problem....which is why what I wrote is trash lol. I had some experiences during my shadowing with this, so i just tried to use that and run with it...however it did not turn out well...i just dont know what they want. I never was like wow because of my in depth knowledge of mexican culture i was able to effectively deal with the situation and help them or w/e -_-.....

Hey, how long is everyone's cultural competence essay?

my two essays add up to more than one page... they said twice that you could attach an additional page. Do you think this is alright?

same here. i'm white as can be but i'm completely comfortable with anyone of any race, religion, whatever. i feel like that's a good quality to have but i haven't discovered how to tell med schools that without sounding totally lame. i wish one of my parents was like samoan or something so i would have something to write about lol.

Well one of the problems is that they want a specific example. I have no idea how people are writing an entire page on one example. I played on the basketball team in college for two years, and that was an experience where I interacted with many people from impoverished neighborhoods and from other cultures. It was also odd participating in prayer since I don't believe in God(s), but I think it shows despite that fact I can certainly go with it if it makes people feel better. Maybe I could even write about that?

you could describe a specific situation in narrative

Do we have to answer #2? I mean i could talk about 1 bad section on my MCAT. Thats about it....

I didn't know if I had to answer it, so I just did anyway. I talked about my worst semester but felt like an idiot because it really wasn't that bad. plus i really had no reason except for taking too many labs (20hrs) and trying to work too. No like deaths or sicknesses just me being a dumb-@$$

Anyone know yet how this school is for completion emails? I am hoping it is not like rosalind but am nervous because of the paper app...

For the prereqs form, do we list the whole course name or just for ex: "biology 113 and lab" is good enough?

so they send emails...why the paper form then lol
lol i guess some schools just like to be old school, honestly a poorly run electronic system like ive had at some schools, are probably way worse then paper apps for the office.

Do u guys think I should talk about my low gpa my first two years of college? I had a huge upward trend, but honestly I didn't have any "extenuating circumstances". It was more of a combination of hardwork, change in study habits, and dedication. What do you guys think? Include or not?

For those whose having trouble with the question on cultural competency, I would suggest to wikipedia and do some research in regards to it. It becomes a very interesting question. We all have demostrated it many times in our life, but having trouble to see through it. Just spent some time reading and researching. You guys will be amazed to see the benefits of cultural comptency. In the beginning, I though it was a hard question, but became one of my favs. 🙂

i have been talking about my low GPA in most of my secondaries. i know it will come up in interviews but if i address it now at least it looks like i'm not trying to hide it or something lol

I dont think its always a good idea, but in this particular case i think its fine as they basiclaly spell it out in the question that its ok and should be explained.I had a similar issue, 1st semester of college I had a 1.6 GPA...i quit school for a few years, came back, and for the past 4 years i have had a 3.78 GPA, however that one semester in the past brings it to a 3.52. I also didnt have any extenuating circumstances. If you have none just be honest, say that you werent motivated or however you wanted to spin it, you realized your mistakes, changed everything around and now have been doing well since then. Theres nothign wrong with saying that.

Yea, you should definitly write about it. I know for the fact i did. I had family issues. In my freshman year I had 3.5 followed by 2.9 > 3.87> 3.9. Because of that one year, I am stuck with a 3.55. 😡. Not everyone's lives are perfect, people face problems and I believe, if you have a good reason for the drop, Adcom should understand that better than anyone else. I mean they are preparing and selecting future physicians!. Good luck 👍

Yea but ur reasons are legitimate though, I feel family/health issues are good reasons. But ok thanks for the advice u guys, I will include it.

And Elijah/Justin both of u guys still have good cumulative gpa's! 3.5 is a perfectly fine gpa

yeah the cultural competency one for me was probbaly one of the best essays i ever wrote for last year or this year. love that prompt. just gotta know what they mean...

Anyone know if they'll take AP credit for any of the prereq requirements? I took AP Calc A, AP Calc B/C, and AP Stats exams (and got those credited at my undergrad institution), but only took one semester of calculus in college... ideas?

YEs I believe they do, because I have AP like everything and I applied lol

It's like looking in a mirror (or reading in a mirror??). Almost exactly the same story here. Anyway, I definitely wrote about it.

How long ago did you guys mail it in? I mailed mine in a little over a week ago, but hadn't heard anything.

I think it depends. It took them about 4 days for them to "complete" me. But I sent my app via UPS shipping, not postal mail. I just don't trust my postman (who delivered my neighbor's undergrad acceptance letter to the wrong house!).

Do you guys know how long it takes them to send out secondary email? I just added that school to my list two days ago.

Nevermind, just got it today.

Is anyone else applying to the MD/MPH program? The link on the application is a dead link. I indicated on my AMCAS application that I was interested in the dual MPH program, but if I don't submit the online graduate degree application, will this hurt my app?

My suggestion - Don't guess. Your candidacy would be jeopardized if you guess incorrectly. Call them and ask.
