So I'm stupid and slack and completely forgot there was a two week deadline for arranging a student host (sitting at 10 days, I suck). Has anyone stayed at hotels in the area, and what did you think? Any recommendations from people in the know?

I stayed at the Holiday Inn University Area, but it was a little too far out for my tastes.

I think the Red Roof Inn is pretty cheap and within legitimate walking distance of the med school, though.

Try facebook. Find UVA SOM Class of 20XX and message someone you find in the group. They might say "Welcome!" and even take you to class in the morning of interview.

The Cavalier Inn (corner of Main and Emmet) is convenient, walking distance of 5 mins or so. Red Roof is closer, but we are only talking minutes here.

Beware that this is "leaf peeping" season - one of the biggest tourist months of the year in Central VA - so hotels may be full.

The Marriott is really close to the med school and has great breakfast. And free coffee.
 
The anxiety on here is killing me. I can say this with certainty to those of you waiting to hear: you have to be an outstanding applicant to have interviewed pre-October 15 ANYWHERE, not just at UVA. So as hard as it is try and rest a little easier knowing that you have the chance to be accepted on the earliest date possible. It's a good situation to be in. But as far as how UVA notifies students...I interviewed in late September and received the acceptance letter (in Ohio) on October 17. I assume it was mailed on either the 15th or 16th. My envelope was fairly thick, but I can't speak to anyone else's so I would suggest opening it before making any judgements. Good luck everyone who's waiting to hear about interviews too, don't give up hope!

Also Steeler, still try emailing the student host coordinators - like I said it's first years and we are a pretty reasonable group of people. I set up my student host like 3 days in advance last year and it was a really good decision in my opinion.

So after examining last year's thread, the first IS letter arrived today.

The first OOS letter arrived on the 17th. The only problem for us is that we have F*(&^^!#@$%$^%ING Sunday to not have mail going for us.

Accepted! I am instate.

regular envelope, although it is stuffed with pages...$0.60 postage...I figured it had to be an acceptance as thick as it was.

The director of the mstp called me on friday and told me that they accepted me into UVA MSTP!!! He mentioned that its pretty honorable because they only accept 1-2 people before february so yay!

Interviewed Oct 8-9, The director of the mstp told me that the med school already accepted me in my interview on 9th. Letter received today...

I wondered about that myself. Looking at last year's thread, there was no information about that.

In fact, there weren't many acceptances noted in that thread, either, certainly not around this time, and nobody mentioned any "bad" letters this early. Seems like the thread this year has more activity.

ACCEPTED!!!!!! My mom decided NOT to check the mail yesterday because it was raining (so typical 😛)

and she calls me today when i got back from my run to tell me I GOT IN!!!!!

we live in Loudoun County, Virginia, so it took 1 day for the letter to get from Charlottesville to NoVa.

Yea, I know if I only had one acceptance from one of the best universities in the country, I'd be squirming in my seat praying to get into a state school. It's not like I'm averaging one acceptance every weekday or anything. 🙄

No need to be a dick. Some people have different standards (rightly so) for what they expect out a cycle. Also, it's good to see people form their own opinions on how much they like certain schools instead of relying on the opinions of US News and others.

Best post in the last month IMO. Especially the bolded part. Don't just assume people are greedy, because you'd be in the boat.
 
I like your choices of schools ksmi, but I was curious about why you applied to a few of them, like UNC that isn't particularly favorable to out-of-staters (although certainly I'd say your odds are better than most), and Wake Forest, which kinda makes me think you have some special attraction to North Carolina. I say that especially considering you applied to a decently small number of schools. Anyways, I was just curious, but don't feel obligated to answer.

UVa is a pretty good school for just being a state school.

I'm not holding my breath for my letter to come tomorrow. Seems to take forever for mail to get all the way out west...

I have an attraction to the east coast and to the more southern parts of the coast. I talked to people at the schools and stuff. I'm def. looking for more than a ranking in a school, so my choices are a bit different than others.

They definitely both have their strong points. I found it very hard to compare the two. Really my "rankings" of my schools change basically everyday. I think the thing I didn't really like about UVa is that I didn't get to interact with the students there much. So I didn't get a good feel for how they felt about the school. But that's def. not something that would be a problem if I went there. Idk, I really want to be able to go visit UVa again though.
 
So, no one got a waitlist or a rejection yesterday? I guess it's all the instaters (one day for the letter to arrive) and early interviewers, so there's probably a higher percentage of accepts from this round.
 
Ok. I am from VA and of course I applied to all the schools in the state. Having interviewed at EVMS, VCU, and VT/Carilion (which was pretty interesting), I'm wondering about UVA and their method of pursuing instate students.

From earlier posts, it seems that UVA attempts to attract qualified out-of-state applicants in order to fulfill their percentage requirements. I realize that they also interviewed highly-qualified instaters as well. However, judging by the lack of posts on this thread, it seems like less interviews have been granted by UVA to this point. Is that possible? Or are the applicants to UVA just "under the radar" and not posting about their experience?

I am also wondering about the breakdown of % between instate and out-of-state interviews that have been conducted thus far. I am guessing (wishfully perhaps), that a significantly higher percentage has been from OOS.

Finally, if UVA's stat averages are approximately 33MCAT 3.8 (or something close), and that includes OOS and IS, does that mean that the average IS stats are higher or lower, or no different?

Thoughts?

For some reason, UVA doesn't get as much "traffic" on SDN as do comparable schools, from either the instate or OOS crowd. There was less interest last year than this year if you look at the thread.

So my guess is that there are people who simply aren't posting here, but are probably lurking.

According to that eduers site, they also seem to get fewer applications, and their interview/acceptance ratio seems pretty favorable. I have no idea why this would be the case, but I am also suspicious of those figures since UVa seems too high caliber of a school to be that "applicant friendly"
 
So, I usually don't like to post about any interview offers, but I noticed this thread is lacking in updates. I was complete the second week of September, and will be interviewing the first week of December. I was just offered an interview about one week ago. So, it seems like things are indeed moving, although perhaps not as quickly as other schools.

As an instater, I am not familiar with the OOS numbers at all, but the ratio seems favorable IF you can get an interview. Again, instate, only something like one in 5 applicants gets an interview. This is 20 percent of the usual instate applicant total of 750 people, so around 150 get invites. Those 750 instate applicants are self selecting out of a total of approximately 1000 unique VA resident applicants in any cycle. So that is a pretty steep hill to climb to get an interview at an instate school.

The good news is that after that, your chances expressed as a percentage are pretty good. To end up with the requisite 70 or so instate matriculants, they will offer acceptances to 130 or so people...

So the trick at UVA is to get an invite, and I think the key to that is an early application. Again, I am sure the OOS numbers are nothing like this, but for an instater, 80 percent of the battle is getting an invitation.

yeah, as an OOS, the odds aren't quite as favorable, but still seem decent. Of course, I'm scheduled for a December interview, so that makes things a bit more difficult. Oh well, we'll see what happens. Congrats on your acceptance.

I got those numbers directly from the sheet they handed out at the interview.

Keep in mind that the high percentage of IS acceptances includes those that come from the waitlist, and that may not happen for a while (people were getting in off the waitlist in June IIRC).

Also, you know the central VA mail is very sticky. I have seen local letters inexplicably take 2 or 3 days.

For anyone else biting their fingernails stressing, I was in the very first round of interviews and still have not gotten anything in the mail yet. Maybe today? Tomorrow? Wednesday? :xf:

I'm in the same boat as you. Today would seem reasonable, but I'm trying not to get my hopes up.
