I'm freaking out a little. I submitted my secondary a few weeks ago and I've been working on other secondaries and completely forgot to check my status on this school. I just checked it right now and I'm on hold because they want to see what I got in my summer classes before they decide to give me an interview. I got all A's but I've known that for a while now but haven't resent my grades yet. And my school has chosen this week to transfer transcripts to a new system so I can't send anything for a week. I've been in contact with members of the admissions committee so they might take another look at my app and I'm afraid when they see the hold they'll think I don't care about this school but its my top choice. Should I send them an email or something to tell them the grades are on their way?

Did they specifically request a transcript? Because if not, I would just e-mail them your grades. I mean eventually they're going to see a transcript when you matriculate so they know you're not going to lie.

I just got screened in for the VCU secondary but it seems like everyone on this thread also got the invite to fill out the secondary. My question is, is it a big deal to get screened in? Was there anyone that got screened out? (Please don't be afraid to speak up!!) Do I actually have a chance at this school? I'm just wondering cause my stats are pretty low (by SDN standards) and I'm also OOS.
Read through the last few pages of this thread. There's been some people who got screened in with low stats, but then when they submitted their secondary, they were rejected very quickly (OOSers, I believe). Check out their stats and see how you compare. I don't want to discourage you from applying though, because if you don't submit the secondary then there's zero chance of getting an interview, right? As long as you try, your chances are better than that.

Don't know if this will help many of you here, as it seems like you've all completed your apps early. And I see that many of you have already gotten your interviews.

But what happened to me may apply to some of you...

I was complete (by VCU standards) on July 21, 2008.

I got the following message on August 31:

"The committee's file review indicates that they would like to consider your file further. We are now in the process of scheduling interviews and will continue to do so through Feb. Unfortunately, the committee indicates interest in far more candidates than we are able to interview...."

I never understood the 1 through 5 screening process, and I'm still not sure I do. But I do know that they use this 1 through 5 system to rate your interviews. 1 = accept; 3.5 + = reject.

Anyway, I got the invite on December 26. That was one heck of a Christmas present.

Good luck to all!

i've heard that the 6000 numbers are how many people submitted primaries. this does not include those who didn't complete secondaries, weren't invited to complete secondaries, etc.

That's definitely possible. The MSAR book should clear this up.

Really?

I just had orientation, and they said that 6000 applied.

Take a look:

http://www.medschool.vcu.edu/about/fastfacts/index.html

It doesn't mention how many were interviewed though.

Sorry, I mentioned that my numbers were estimates. I just wanted to show the other person that the 60% statistic was way too high. With 6000 applicants, I would assume then it would be even lower than my 30% estimate....yikes.

Congrats by the way on VCU, I would love to go here!

JaDud would you happen to know how they give out interviews, is it based on completion date or status update date? (Ofcourse comparing two people who have the same message)

Alibai,

Thanks for the congrats!

I'm not really sure what you mean by "based on completion date or status update date."

VCU gives out all info via email. They sent me an automated email message with the subject "VCU School of Medicine Application Status Update." Then I logged into the SOM page where it said that I had been invited to an interview and that I needed to schedule an interview date. They give you a list to choose from.

For last year's cycle, the time between receiving an interview invite and actually being able to go for an interview was ~ 1 month.

Ok that sounds good, were you ever on any of those "holds"?

As a matter of fact, I was. I didn't get in until July.

O haha, I meant the pre-interview hold. Wow July?? Well that's great that you didn't have to reapply...

Thanks for the tip ruiner, I didn't even think that they might just want me to tell them my grades. I sent them an email and hopefully they'll get back to me soon or update my app.

Oops my bad.

I guess you can use me as an example of an underdog getting in. You'll eventually be faced with several critical announcement dates (they're usually on the 15th ... 12/15, 2/15, etc..). Don't fret if you don't get accepted during these dates. The wait list moves very quickly - esp the out of state one.

Anyway, I have no idea how long the pre-interview hold is. I would guess that my hold lasted from when I was complete to December ( when I got the invite).

Thanks for the advice!

Just got the "may" status. Fingers crossed for an invite (I'm OOS, but have family in Richmond).

Does anybody know the number of invites for #2 (may's) and #3 (further) of last year?
And after that, how many actually got in?

I just want to hear something from any of the schools I applied to haha. But the majority havn't even started interviewing much yet if at all so it's ok. Congrats on the interview!

Thanks 🙂 Dont worry, the updates will show up eventually. I tend to hear things from school in clusters haha It sometimes gets overwhelming. Secondary secondary secondary bam bam bam!

Just got the "further" status.

Looks like they are inviting "may"s before "further"s, but I'll be patient

Good luck!

I got a reply after sending my grades and they said they meant they wanted grades for the fall semester even though the message said recently completed courses. So now I'm stuck on hold until December. I think the best I'm going to get from this school is a spot on the waitlist. 🙁

Wait I'm confused as to why they would wait till the fall? What does your hold message say exactly?

This is what the status page says:

"The committee's initial screening resulted in a decision to hold your application awaiting grades from courses you are either currently enrolled in or which you indicated you would enroll shortly. Please submit your grades to the Admissions Office as soon as possible. After that time, you can check your status for any further action. Remember all grades need to be submitted by January 31st."

I just noticed the "you would enroll shortly"

And this is what they said when they replied to my email:

"Thank you for sending in those grades. The file reviewer for your file is actually interested in your fall semester grades, or your first semester Senior Year grades. Your file will remain on hold until the grades for your fall semester are available. Please send them our way as soon as they are released."

I guess I should be happy they didn't just reject me. I still have a chance.

did anyone get an interview less than two weeks after their status update?!

I was marked complete on 8/17, but the letters listed as being received did not include one of my letters, AND all the letters are marked non-science.. what is going on?? From reading/searching this thread it seems that a few other people have been marked complete even with letters listed incorrectly or whatnot. I plan to call their office tomorrow... 😕

I doubt that, unless they got the "VERY" message....the "MAYs" who received invites were all complete in July.

Where are you seeing your letters? All I see is my application status "further" message.

If I remember the VCU app right, then when you login, it shows you the regular message - in your case, the "further" message. If you actually click Status (or something like that) at the top, you'll see the letters.

Sorry if I'm way wrong haha

Way off!

Haha I just asked someone on admin - it is called "File Status" not "Status" as I had said. It is the first option when you login. She did say that it may not show the letters and stuff once you have already received one of the status updates (like "further").

No kidding. She's everywhere and seems to know everything... Something's fishy here. Are you a spy from a med school trying to find out who's legit and who's not? I'd guess you're a spy for BU, and that's how they're determining their rejects.

Haha thanks. I thought there were people who got the "may" message and also got their interview invites within 1-2 weeks.

Well that's good news, I'll keep my fingers crossed :xf:

I log in, click on "File Status", and immediately my letters which they have received are listed. This is what it says:

File status: complete

Our records show that the following items have been received**:

Supp App [date]
Supp fee [date]

Item Date received
[Letter 1] [date]
[Letter 2] [date]

etc.

I also have not received any further decision since I was complete on 8/17, if that helps clarify at all.

just got my rejection..completed last week

just got my rejection..completed last week

ditto to both

3.45 gpa, 31Q, OOS

It is very depressing when the first thing you hear from any school is a rejection, and it was one of my only "go for it!" schools.

how long did it take for you guys to hear anything? I've been complete since 7/31 and nothing yet.... i dunno if it matters but OOS 4.0 34 mcat
