Does anybody know how receptive ECU is to letters of intent? I know they don't seem too fond of phone calls to check applications ...

Got rejected a while back, probably in the first wave! 38S, 3.86c, etc etc. I guess I shouldn't have wasted the money -- they should let you know that in advance...

I feel the exact same way. I don't understand it.

I don't think it'd hurt. You're talking about a letter that says you'll drop all other schools if they accept you?

Yeah pretty much ... and just in general stating my interest and everything I like about the program.

As of February 1, 2011, we have .....

  • Received 851 AMCAS applications
  • Received 746 Supplementary applications
  • Interviewed 445 applicants
  • Made 61 offers
  • (Generally it takes 100-125 offers to fill a class)
Ouch ... class is almost full.

If they have to make at least 120 offers...only half the offers have been given out... (trying to be positive)

Where do you get that information from?

And the class is at most 60% full...

I feel ya. I had a 37, 3.6 GPA, Physics BS and got rejected rather quickly after the interview. I suppose we just don't fit their mission.

Well the class is only 78 students, so I think they were referring to that number saying the class was almost full although they accept more knowing a certain percentage will choose to go elsewhere. Brody's website updates the number of offers on the first of the month.

I called earlier and she told me I had been reviewed a couple times, but no decision has been made. She said no news is good news... which I know is true, but the wait is still pretty painful.

Hopefully I'll have a decision by March!

Good luck to everyone else!

The comment was definitely not meant to scare anybody and was said in my normal, pessemistic voice! Sorry that I failed to calculate the actual percentage of the class that is full before posting on SDN. How dare I?

Haha.... its cool... I think people are just grouchy from waiting.

Yeah, I know I am getting grouchy too. A very good word for how I'm feeling! 🙂

Called today. Same boat as you. Been reviewed ... "no news is good news", should know within a few weeks. Was pretty glad to hear it.

Hi all, first post to this thread.

I got admitted at Brody today. I'm quite surprised by it, but happy nonetheless.

If you would like to ask me anything about my file/interview, message me, and I will be happy to respond.

I interviewed in Mid-November... so I feel like its going to be forever before I hear something.

I hope you hear good news soon!

I loved ECU, and I hope my re-applicant status/persistence is as advantageous as people say it is.

Has the adcom changed up its meeting schedule? I thought that they would be meeting today (Wednesday).

Nonetheless, congrats moustache!

Girl000, have you decided what you're going to do if you get into Brody? Are you going to Omaha or Greenville?

I'm really not sure yet. They're both great programs with so many positives ... and very little negatives! I'd be very grateful to get into ECU so we'll see if it happens and what I would decide then!

Good luck with your apps!

:luck::luck:

So... news... anybody?

According to the MSAR ECU's average MCAT is a 29P... but it seems like everyone who has been accepted on SDN this far has a 32/33... I wonder if its just because most of the people that post on SDN are a little above the norm...

Anyway... hopefully we'll all hear something soon! You all sound like you'd be awesome classmates.

I recently contacted BSOM for an update as I interviewed there in mid October. They replied stating that it has been before the committee, but no final decision has been made. It will be reviewed again in 4-6 weeks.

Same boat, interviewed in Nov. and they said that my application wouldn't be up for review again until march; a decision may or may not be made at that time. While I would LOVE an acceptance letter, the no news is good news mantra does hold true here. GOOD LUCK EVERYONE WHEREVER YOU ARE APPLYING AND TRY TO STAY POSITIVE!!

Sorry i haven't done a great job keeping up with the SDN forums, but I got my acceptance letter last Tuesday! It's my first acceptance anywhere, so im extremely excited. While I have a few more interviews I'm pretty sure ECU is where I want to end up.

I interviewed 11/2, and was a re-applicant (2nd attempt).
35O MCAT
3.745 cGPA
3.86 Science GPA
Was a Bio (BS) major at UNC

I didn't retake the MCAT or change anything academically (other than taking a lone biochem course last fall), so Im sure what made the difference was a lot of volunteering at a local indigent care clinic, along with some other shadowing and medically related volunteering.

Best of luck to everyone else!

Gosh, no posts for a week. My window of hope is getting smaller and smaller the closer that "invitations sent" number gets to 125. The glass is still half full though... and the class too.

Keep the faith people and Happy Valentine's Day !! :luck:

One way of looking at it is the pool is always getting smaller. I assume that they're only going to interiew for a few more weeks, plus while we can only see the offers given, we can't see how many rejections have been given out. So the longer we stay in the game, the better our chances probably are.

Good luck everybody!

Hopefully that's what it means ... unless the rejections are in the mail! I think I need to be more optimistic! Either way, almost 5 months after interview for me! Seems so long ago.

Hank, are you applying to the Brody Dental School??? Because in this forum, you are posting on the allopathic medical school site, not the dental site . I guess you could be applying to both, but from what I've read in the past, that usually doesn't end well.
Nonetheless, best of luck to you. 👍

Hang in there my friend 👍

They didn't fix the date, but the update is up. . .

As of February 1(5), 2011, we have .....

Received 851 AMCAS applications
Received 746 Supplementary applications
Interviewed 488 applicants
Made 63 offers
(Generally it takes 100-125 offers to fill a class)

Just 2 offers in the past two weeks.

Seem pretty comparable to last year ... by the 03/01/2010 update, 67 offers. I keep expecting a big jump in the numbers, but I guess ECU works slow.

Good luck guys!

Hey guys,

Since I was late in applying this year, I just interviewed on 2/8/2011, and they informed us that the final interview date was the next day. Additionally, they told us they were running ahead of schedule with their normal acceptance procedures. For us they told us that first glance rejections would come out in around 4 weeks, and all applicants would be notified their status by the beginning of April.

Eh, what's 5 more weeks when we've waited this long?

I just wish you could figure out how many rejections there were, so you can see how big the applicant pool is currently.

Yeah, I'd like to know this as well. I think if you consider the people who reported rejections and acceptances on SDN, you can assume that the pool is less than 400 since they only interviewed 488.

Just called. Said a bunch of rejections have gone out, and I was not in that category. Also mentioned that everybody would be notified within 6 weeks. Said that in order for somebody to gain an acceptance, everybody has to agree -- which has not happened yet with my application.

Good luck guys!!

:luck: :luck: :luck:

In my mind, I am hoping that the pool is now around 200 applicants in contention. Gives everyone a pretty good chance.

That's good to hear. I called yesterday and was told no decision for me either. At this point im hoping that means ill at least be on the waitlist.

I finally broke down and called for the first time today. Said that no decision had been made about me, but they did receive the letter of intent that I sent them two weeks ago.

I didn't ask about any timelines, and no additional information was volunteered. I guess I either didn't get the right person, or didn't ask the right questions.

I'm about to worry myself silly about this - there are a ton of logistics involved for me if I'm accepted (worrying about selling a house, moving my family, etc.).

Ready for a good night's sleep!

So all of you who are still waiting for a decision... How did you think your interviews went?

I felt like my interview went great. I had one interviewer that was a little tougher than the other, but overall I walked away feeling pretty good.

Are any of you reapplicants?

Just wondering if there is something that sort of binds us all together as the group of people without decisions (age, stats, location, etc..).

My stats are pretty average I guess (right around the school's average)...

Anyway just trying to keep the convo going in the thread.

Hey Norm,

I thought my interview went well, too. I was expecting the whole "good cop, bad cop" routine from them, and was not disappointed. I'm a first time applicant, and a very non-traditional student (undergrad in 1997).

My stats are lower than many people who said they have already been rejected, but my undergrad stats are so old, I don't know how much they influence my application anyway. Undergrad GPA was LOW, but graduate school GPA is great, as well as my post-bacc GPA.

I've definitely taken the hard road to get to this point, but it will be worth it if I get in. If not, it's time to retake the MCAT, and start all over again.

Not really sure if I'm considered non-traditional ... but I graduated in 2009 and have been in regenerative medicine research/clinical research since then.

I'm a third time reapplicant ... and have taken the MCAT a fun 4 times. I interviewed at ECU last year (very late in the cycle, February ... one of the last interview sessions) and received a rejection. Hopefully this year will be different!

Either way, good luck everybody! 🙂

I guess I'm in that stage where I'm kinda traditional, kinda non-traditional. I'll be 24 in April. This is also my third time applying.

Sounds like you're at Wake doing research. Don't they have a huge regenerative medicine program there? I remember them talking about it when I interviewed there two years ago.

Yes, there is a very, very large regen program here at the WFU Institute for Regenerative Medicine. I've been here for 3 years and absolutely love it. It's been a great learning experience. Did you interview at WFU this year?

I interviewed Nov and still haven't heard a peep. I'm a first time applicant, about to finish undergrad.

ECU was my 1st med school interview so I was pretty nervous and didn't know what to expect, but I thought it went well.

I was born and raised in eastern NC and my stats are above average for ECU. I originally thought it'd be a shoo in for me. Quickly learned there is NO such thing with med school.

I'm probably stating the obvious and maybe this has been talked about in this thread earlier, but this is what I've gathered from my pre-med advisor: ECU is very committed to their mission and I think my weakness, at least, is that I didn't convince them I'm really interested in primary care or really want to stay in eastern NC. I am of course interested in both, but I am young and indecisive and flexible! They're my only school that wanted to know what other schools I applied to. Advisor says when they see schools on my list that have drastically different missions, it sends them mixed messages about what I'm interested in pursuing. Maybe some of you can relate to this.

Yeah, I think I understand what you're saying. And I can honestly say I've been there. My first time applying I felt absolutely unprepared for what the interview process was going to be like. I was definitely lacking clinical experience (I only had like 30 hours total when I applied) and I felt like I could give a million good reasons why I wanted to be a doctor and more specifically a PCP, but I had little experience on my application to back it up.

Hopefully you won't have to reapply (hopefully none of us will). But if you do, the best advice I can give is to immerse yourself in healthcare experience, and really try to make the most out of your gap year(s). Looking back on things I think not getting in the first time was really a blessing in disguise, because if I had gotten in I would have never had the opportunity to work with the uninsured in a free clinic for a year and a half, or shadow two very incredible doctors for several months, or work as a scribe in the ED. I also got the chance to enroll in more classes as a post-bacc at my undergrad and take classes that I wanted to take, and not classes that my major required me to take. I've met so many awesome people along the way too.

Experiences like these have really helped shaped me into the physician I know I"ll one day be.

Anyway, sorry for going off on a random tangent.. but good luck!
