Everyone seems to take question 2 far too literally. Don't pull some insignificant activity out of your behind just because it isn't on your primary. Write about one of your most significant activities from a different aspect or point of view. Generally, primary descriptions are for fact. Secondary essays are for emotion and motivation.

Example: Someone worked at a summer camp. They put the dates worked, the number of children responsible for, the organizing organization, location and theme of the camp in their primary application. They then write about making a difference in the life of a particular child at that camp for their secondary application.

Ha! That's exactly what I did. Thanks for the reassurance. Crossing my fingers for an interview.

Just checked my status today and saw that it was completed yesterday 07/27. I submitted 07/16.

Anyone else done? When did you submit?

Submitted 7/22, complete 7/27. Interview invites started early-September last year.

I'm OOS, and they specifically said that invites will go to IS first. So it'll be a while still for me yet... maybe even onto 2011. I would be worried if I hear too soon from them. Because it would be a rejection letter!!

Where do you guys see your actual status? All mine has is a box that says my secondary was received and the date the secondary was sent to me on. I don't see where it would say "on hold" or sent for review.

It's that same page. Once it's forwarded to preliminary review they just update that page.

This is not as strict as it might have seemed. There will be more in-state than out-of-state, especially at the first interview dates, but there will be OOSers invited. They do dig a bit deeper in the OOS pot in the spring, as those who have already been accepted to their own state schools are more likely to turn down invites to MSU at that point. After all, what's the benefit to interviewing someone who will (understandably!) decide they'd rather go elsewhere than pay the sky-high OOS tuition at MSU? That being said, despite the tuition, just about a quarter of the class comes from OOS, with probably 7-10% coming from California.

This might seem like a really silly question, but I just realized Ii missed an apostrophe in one of my secondary essays. This school is my top choice and I am really afraid of making a bad impression with a typo/grammatical error. If I don't end up getting an interview, it won't be because of one little apostrophe, will it?

I really doubt it... I mean if your essays were covered in grammatical/spelling mistakes, I'm sure that would affect their impression of you. But if it's ONE apostrophe, I doubt they'll even notice.

Don't sweat it!! There's nothing you can do anyways, and although I'm no adcomm, I really don't think it's going to single-handedly ruin your chances at MSU!!!

I figured, but thanks for the encouragement. Good luck everyone!

For these essays (particularly #2), how much do you think it all has to be post high school? Do you guys err on, EVERYTHING is post hs? Because I did have one really positive memory from the summer before my last year of high school, nothing health-care related, but it was a big personal project of mine.

I take the question to be fairly broad, so if you had a significant experience before starting college I'd use it. It's not like it's any less significant or rewarding to you since it was before college.

Thanks! Yea, that's what I ended up doing. 🙂

anyone else getting an error line halfway through the status check page?

mine says

Notice: Undefined index: appinfo in C:\apache\htdocs\mdadmissions\aplocal\applicants\check_status.php on line 55

Fatal error: Call to a member function displayApplicantInfo() on a non-object in C:\apache\htdocs\mdadmissions\aplocal\applicants\check_status.php on line 59

😕

I find it kind of annoying that the status check page is offline every night for 5 hours, during the exact time that I can actually check it. That being said, how long has it taken most people to be marked as forwarded for review?

In case anyone is curious, I just found out that the first interview day will be September 9th. Invitations should either be out or coming soon. This first interview day is likely heavy with early admission applicants, so don't get any ruffled feathers if don't hear anything for a while yet!

Thanks for the information. That's soon, I can't believe it's already the end of August...

I am an EDP applicant. My last letter (finally) arrived this past Thursday and I got an interview email on Friday. The interview day is September 9.

3.97 overall GPA, 4.00 science GPA, 31R (8, 11, 12)

I'm a non-traditional student, for whatever that is worth. 🙄

Anybody see pictures of the new Secchia Center in downtown GR? The opening class just had their white coat ceremony this past weekend.

anyone know when interviews start going out?

According to last year's thread, the first interview invites went out on 9/10 for the first interview day, 9/17. A week's notice for interviews! Holy preparation, Batman.

Does anybody know where they will be conducting the interviews this year? I know last year they were all out of EL, but I wonder if the committee will every meet in Grand Rapids...

Interviews will be held in both Grand Rapids and East Lansing this year.

This is true. Don't book travel arrangements to the wrong city!

The first interview day is tomorrow, and it is mostly for EDP candidates. As I had information on my interviewees as early as last weekend, I would imagine that the folks got their interview invites well before that. A week would be less notice than usual, for sure. Generally three weeks notice is more standard. A possible exception is resheduling the interview slot of someone who cancelled late, in which the opportunity to come at short notice is generally given to a candidate with a close location.

Although I'm a wolverine at heart... I'm pretty happy about my interview invite! 🙂 Scheduled for 9/21. I was complete 7/22.

I just got an interview invitation but it starts with
"Dear MSU College of Human Medicine Early Decision Program Applicant:"

The problem is I am not an early decision program applicant. Did I just receive this email by mistake or is it just a typo? Thanks

Oh mine says EDP too I just was so excited by the words "Interview Invitation" that I hardly read it. Haha. That is so weird though. 6pm... I wonder if the office is still open or I should just email. It better not be a mistake, I'll be so disappointed lol

I tried to call them but they closed at 5 today. I just confirmed my invitation and asked about it in my confirmation email. I doubt it is a mistake if that happened to the both of us :xf:.

Yeah I did the same thing 🙂 IMO they can't take back an interview invite! lol... You're probably right though, I'm sure it's fine. Maybe they copy + pasted the wrong invite text and didn't proofread before sending it out 😀

haha i think they actually can, but i'm sure you're fine. we'll just see on monday. do you know if they already previously invited/interviewed EDP people?

When were you guys complete if I may ask?

Well Calheesh, even if they don't answer the phone after 5, apparently they check their email lol, I just received a reply stating that the EDP thing was an accident.

lol, do you still have the interview invite though?

That is an amazing building! I bet the students are enjoying every bit of it.

We all love the building!!! It is outstanding! The anatomy lab rocks! We had our first patient interviews today and the clinical space is also fantastic. It even includes simulators (pediatrics, geriatrics, OR simulators, a skill arcade)!

Here is the best news coverage yet! I am even in it... guess where. Ha ha!

Interview invite for 9/21. I also was addressed as an EDP tho I'm not, if it makes you feel better.

Looks like I'll be seeing you two next Tuesday 😀

Congrats! I am nervous, I have an interview next Friday and one on the Monday before this one, and then I'm off to Albany on that Thursday. I'm insane, it was probably a good idea that I dropped one of my classes last night... thank goodness I only need 8 credits to stay a full time student lol. See you Tuesday!
