I was marked complete around mid August.

If I qualify for one of the mission based applicants, and I haven't heard back yet, does that necessarily mean anything? Or has my application not been looked at?

Thanks and sorry if this has been asked already.

Huh, that seems odd that it would take so long to verify residency. I submitted 8/30 and was complete 9/15. Then again, as a non-trad I might have a more obvious paper trail that establishes me as an OR resident (and taxpayer... and homeowner... etc).

I have 14 years of home ownership and property taxes, etc. I was surprised it took so long.

Interview Invite!! 👍👍

Secondary complete 8/20. OOS/32L/3.71 overall/3.64 science

Hi Everyone!

So I talked with my uncle who used to work in the SOM admissions last year and he said that MD/MPH applicants hear back later because they all have to be read by the Direction of the Program and sometimes he gets bogged down- taking upwards of months to finish them before people hear back for interviews.

I was complete 9/23 and was getting nervous, but once he told me that I relaxed a bit.... so if you are in the same situation, hopefully this makes you feel better! 🙄

Congrats on the invite mashers...also, based on your completion date, I wonder if it's going to take them 2 months to finish reviewing my app. Hope not.

OOS, been on hold for an interview for a while. Anyone on hold get an interview yet?

Just found out I was rejected pre-interview. Oregon resident, 3.98, 39Q, clinical research and hospital volunteering at OHSU. LOR from one of the doctors there. Can't begin to tell you how very disappointed I am with my state school.

Wow!! 😱

I'm stunned on your behalf. Do you have any idea why? Is it possible you have a stinker LOR? 😕

...that is...wow. that's all i can say. I never imagined how much of a crap-shoot this entire process is. But with those scores, you will get in somewhere great. No doubt about it. I'm sorry about the bad news.

I do not think there is much objectivity in OHSU's process.

Thanks everyone! It really does help. Not sure what the problem was, I have had several interviews so far (including WUSTL which is a very picky school) and nothing negative was ever mentioned. Dianyla I really don't think it was the LOR from my research at OHSU as both the doctor in charge and the lab coordinator each offered to write one and both signed the single letter. Apparently they just didn't like something about my application.

I completely understand Simplify's frustration, we just have to move on.🙁 Good luck to everyone else!!

So bizarre. That would drive me absolutely nuts. I'm glad you have lots of other options though, it seems this cycle is going very well for you. In fact, that makes me wonder... did they perhaps think you were treating them as a "Safety"?

Anyways, sigh. We'll miss you!

Thanks again for the encouragement! Yes so far things have been good as far as receiving other interviews. And yes I agree it is very bizarre I could not get an interview at my home school. Not sure if they feel I was treating them as a "safety" as they would obviously be my first choice since I have lived in Portland my whole life (family and friends), and attend a private undergraduate college in Portland. I also would be paying IS tuition at OHSU which is a huge incentive to stay. I assume they could figure out I would rather stay in town.

I do have a neighbor that is a anesthesiologist at OHSU and knows me well (I am hoping to work with him in residency someday). He had been on the residency admissions board for several years and I will have him look over my application to see if he can give me some further insight.

Thank you all again and a sincere best of luck in your application cycle!!!

BYE!

I think they just want you to explore the world, if you have done everything in Oregon, they clearly want you to go somewhere else..... become more diverse.... That is the only reason i can think of why they would reject someone with your stats pre-interview..

And also it makes sense that is something OHSU would 100% do...

Would it be fair to call on Tuesday if there hasn't been an update by then? It will be six weeks since my interview at that point.

My memory of what Katy told us is that if we'd heard nothing in 6 weeks we were free to call her...

Maybe this is a bit of a stretch, but I have heard that OHSU is very anti-nepatistic. I was joking with one of my kids's doctors up there that he needed to get on the admission committee and help me get in. He said "I couldn't even get my own daughter in."

Of course, it makes you crazy to do all this second guessing. I have worked in two labs up there but done all my shadowing elsewhere. I heard the don't shadow up here advice from someone in the dean's office. It was more like a suggestion than a rule, but she said it.

We are supposed to be doing stuff we enjoy and not "jumping through hoops" and checking boxes, but sometimes it feels like the latter.

i would call on Wednesday if you dont hear anything by Tuesday..... and let us know....

i would call today lol... the wait must be killing you it is killing me as well even though i interviewed on the oct 12th....

i feel like they will send like a batch of acceptances... do you know who to call?

Phone call was placed...got voicemail...now to resume previously scheduled waiting already in progress. 🙂

A quick question for any Med-student at OHSU....or anyone that knows:

Why is the average indebtedness SO much higher at OHSU than at other similar schools? What does the financial aid package look like? Thanks...you're all beautiful people!

Aglai, i would call 503-494-8220 and ask for Lori Toner.494-8228 is another number as well .. deans office

OHSU is one of the most expensive in state and out of state schools... life in Portland is cheap but there is so much to do around the area....

That number is high at OHSU because our tuition is high: Approximately 40K per year for in-state students, and 55K per year for out-of-state students.

As for financial aid packages...well, there's pretty much only one. For first year students, 100% of expenses are covered by loans. Scholarships, awards, etc aren't applied for until after the first year, and even then most students still have to rely primarily on loans.

On a related note, does anyone know OHSU's endowment? I can't find any numbers online...

I feel like that might play a part.

That will be different next year according to this:

hi everyone just wondering how bad is it if i was placed on a pre-interview hold?

Phone call was placed...got voicemail...now to resume previously scheduled waiting already in progress. 🙂

Still no info...may stop by the office when I go to lab this week if I don't get an update soon. I now need to figure out what to do with my present acceptance.

aglaia, i called last week, i think i commitee scores are in, however, our academic scores are not calculated. I think they will send acceptances by batches and I wonder if they will send out something this week.... lets cross our fingers, i have an interview at drexel friday and would love to not waste 800-900$ on that trip

That seems odd. Isn't that how they determine eligibility for interview??

I don't believe there is much pre-interview scoring. I am a little surprised that they don't have the academic sub-section of scoring done yet, since it seems to me that this would be the most "cut and dry" aspect to measure. The interviews/essays/ECs scoring should be a lot more work.

FWIW, I was told last year that academic scoring is very non "cut and dry", because they adjust the GPA and classes etc. according to the university attended. I could see how it would take awhile to run everyone through that adjustment, but it should still take less time than the more subjective measures. I do remember there being a stress that an "academic" measure was more or less a measure of the primary while the other measurement was performance in the interview.

Hey guys,

Does anyone have any tips for interviews at OHSU? Mine is tomorrow and would love the inside scoop... Thanks!

Know your application. My interviewers were well versed in what was in my applications. I am a reapplicant and my 1st interviewer even asked questions about last year's essay.

Well, I know it was stressed that this was only 20% of your "score" (MCAT + grades). I would think it would be complicated. I have an undergrad school, graduate school, and postbac school not to mention some dual enrolled grades from high school. I don't know how they are going to adjust for all those schools. For that matter, I don't know how much they really care about the grades from my master's.

I think the other factors outweigh the numbers fairly significantly.

I'd agree with that. I think the single most important factor for OHSU is interview performance, which towers over gpa or mcat. But they do mention that scores can place students in a mission based group, which definitely has a role pre-interview. It's all very complicated.

Can someone call them also to see what is going on.........

Thanks for posting this. I was under the impression that the "academic" score was strictly grades/scores and the 80% is the "everything else" of essays, volunteering & ECs, and your interviews. But the way you're describing it, maybe they're including ECs and essays in the academic scoring. So is the 80% strictly the interview? Or maybe interview+letters?

It's nice to hear that they consider differences in academic program, institutions, etc. and factor that in. I'm also hoping they do something like UW, where they actually weight later year GPA heavier in order to reward the upward trend.

I'll be seeing you up there tomorrow. 🙂 As others mentioned, I'm reviewing my entire app and also looking at the SDN interview feedback.

I am a reapplicant and my 1st interviewer even asked questions about last year's essay.
Oh, that's interesting. I've often wondered if they kept previous apps and actually looked at them. I'm a first time applicant, but am applying so narrowly this year that I might be a re-applicant next year.

I'm sorry I think my post was a little misleading. I think they take two main measurements of an applicant (with weight on the interview). First is the more academic measure, which incorporates grades, essays, activities, letters etc., basically everything from the primary and secondary. Then they have the readiness for medical school measure, which is a combination of 4 or 5 factors that are conveyed during the interview. These factors are things like passion for medicine, communication skills, maturity, preparedness for medical school, etc. that are conveyed in a personal interaction. This is based off of an exit interview from the previous cycle, where I was also told that program was taken into consideration when determining competitiveness of grades.

Given this, my biggest advice for you tomorrow is to ooze passion for medicine - make it very clear that this is exactly what you want to do, because they really look for that in the interview (i.e. I was given the impression it was the most important part of the interview). That could've just been my interviewers though, so please incorporate that advice into your interview strategy as you see fit (or not at all lol).

so to bring up a previously discussed topic, it is my understanding that OHSU students apply for scholarships after the first year. When this happens, is preference given to IS students, or is everyone essentially on a level playing field, at least in terms of residency status?
