Cheers to being put on hold! Just a quick question if anyone knows. Last year it seems OHSU accepted people on something of a rolling basis with people being taken off hold periodically. The post interview hold statement leads me to believe they aren't going to update us until May 15 at the earliest. Is there really going to be radio silence for the next five months??

Also, to Northwesterly and Dianyla. I just wanted to say how awesome and supportive you have been to other people in this forum has been great. You both seem like really nice people. I really hope you both get in this year!

I had a hard time finding many pre-5/15 hold list acceptances during my quick review of the 2009 and 2008 threads, but maybe I wasn't scanning carefully enough. I certainly hope I'm wrong, but after spending the last few weeks waiting for a response I'm going to try to assume I won't hear anything 'til May, and keep my expectations pretty low.

But really, over-thinking this stuff is a recipe for anxiety and heartache--don't be like me! 🙂
And I'm glad if I've been at all helpful here--I'm just trying to give back a little to this site since it's been such a huge help to me over the last couple years. Good luck with the rest of your cycle, thomprya!

I have been under the very strict impression that they notify about 10-15% of interviewees of outright acceptance/rejection at the time the applicant file is reviewed post-interview, and that everybody else (the remaining 85-90%) must wait until May 15th.

I really think that's wisest. I have never heard of anyone hearing in the middle, although I imagine there's always a chance for exceptions if perhaps there is some kind of remarkable update received during that time. (I would think it would have to be something remarkably good or bad, though.)

This is the bad part about interviewing somewhat early - May is just that much further away! :luck:

Aww, thank you! If the turnaround time you guys are reporting is any clue, my 11/16 interview cohort might be getting reviewed sometime around the turn of the year. :xf: :xf:

Well I can't help being like me! I need more data so that I can obsess over every minute detail! So I figure I might as well post and share data to feed the obsessions of others as well.

Past year cycle threads have been invaluable to me as well. I can't imagine going through this process without at least some kind of indicator of "what's normal" for each school. 😱

Yeah I think that obsessing is a prerequisite for applying to med school. At least you guys weren't as bad as I was last year when I was on the alternate list. The nerd I am, I was making graphs of movement on past alternate lists to see what my chances were!

Ha! That's awesome  Sounds like what I will be doing if I get put on the alternate list.

Oh, I've seen the charts! Impressive work. (I just hope the waitlist numbers have stabilized in the 30s and don't drop into the teens or anything.)

I'd taken the quoted 15% for granted, but going through the last couple years' threads it really looks like current applicants get an up or down after the interview, after which the only way in is off the waitlist (30-40 applicants at most.) Not only did no one in 2008/2009 seem to get accepted off the hold list before May 15th, but I didn't see any MD-only applicants receiving offers of admission *on* the 15th--it looked like people either got snail-mail rejections or waitlist rankings.

It could be that the 15% number held true in years past when yields were lower and waitlisted applicants were accepted out to #100 or so. Back then, 100 off the waitlist + MD/MPH + MD/PhD could easily add up to more than half the 220 offers of admission. These days I'm not so sure.

This might just be my morning-after gloom talking, and even if I'm right it just means post-interviewees have a better than 15% chance of getting a thumbs up right away, so take my half-informed reasoning with a grain of salt. Best of luck, folks.

Verrrrry interesting. While I know that the plural of 'anecdote' is not 'facts' I'm trying to recall if I know anyone who's gotten an acceptance on May 15th... And I can't. I know people who got the Insta-Accept post-interview, and people who got waitlisted, but.... Huh.

If there isn't big chunk of acceptances delivered on May 15th, then you're right... the numbers do seem to suggest that more than 15% of people are getting the Insta-Accept. If it were only 15% you'd be looking at having ~65 seats of the class already allocated by May 15th, with possibly another 155 offers to make. And that doesn't jive with the ever-shrinking waitlist movement.

I'm going to have to dig deeper into this when I get a free moment later today.

Hello Everybody,

I got a quick question for OHSUSOM applicants 🙂.... How long did it take for them to review your secondary application and make a rejection/interview decision? I am just curious because my secondary application has been completed 10/07 but I still haven't heard anything since then... I know that it might take up to 12 weeks to review the application, but I am just curious about other people's experiences 🙂

Thanks 🙂

Ivan

P.S. I am an OOS applicant, from Vancouver, WA, just across the bridge. I am also in a Mission-Based Group - these things might matter

Never mind, got an interview today! for January 19th, 2011 🙂. Sooo excited!

Woooooohoooooo! Just got the acceptance e-mail. Interviewed 10/26. It's going to be so hard to choose between OHSU, CU, and Georgetown. I loved each of them so much. A good dilemma to have though...

Conrats! I was there on 10/26 and haven't heard yet, hopefully that's not bad. Trying to figure out who you are, can't remember anyone from CO oh well.

Thanks! 🙂
I don't know if this will prompt any memory, but I was the only girl with brown curly hair in our group. That probably won't help at all...lol. Anyway, best of luck with your app!

I only remember talking to a few girls at the end of the day in the conference room while waiting for afternoon interviews. If you were there then yes, if not, then no.

Does any one have any updates on where they are on post-interview reviews? I interviewed on 11/2 and I'm really hoping to hear something before the holidays!

I sent an email gently inquiring about my interview date cohort (11/16) a few days ago and haven't gotten any response. I don't expect that mid-November will be up anytime soon yet, but I think they were getting close to the end of October so you're probably coming up soon. :luck: :xf:

I checked with Katy after I passed 7 weeks. She said the 6-8 week number was optimistic and that at this point it was more likely a matter of 8+ weeks. (I ended up hearing one day shy of 8 weeks, and from the looks of it my 10/14 cohort heard either at 6 or 8 weeks, with Thanksgiving in the middle.)
So, it sounds like 8 is where it's at, for now.
Anyway, good luck everybody. I know how much the waiting sucks--I'm sending all the positive vibes I don't believe in your way!

Also, it seems like the early schedule was a bit more scattered--mostly Tuesday/Thursday dates and often every other week for interviews? It sounds like it moves into a regular T/W/Th weekly schedule as the season wears on, so the responses are likely to come more regularly as well.

I interviewed on Tuesday (12/14) and they said it would be 6-8 weeks, but realistically with the holidays they are running much closer to the 8 weeks.

Also FYI, they also said that as of 10/14 they had done 150 interviews (out of the 500-550 they expect to conduct) and that they had made 12 offers of admission (out of a class of 120).

Well I am glad to see that accepted number is small considering I got the hold today :/. Interviewed 10/26 and am oos.

After getting into one of my top choices, I'm debating whether I should cancel my interview at OHSU. I'm leaning towards on canceling, since flying from coast to coast is not cheap nor pleasant. Good thing I didn't book the ticket well in advance,

Darn, after waiting for the invite so long and being so excited when I got it...

if you will undoubtedly go to the school you go into over OHSU, it would be kind of you to cancel your interview as it would free up a spot for someone who may not have been accepted yet or for which OHSU is their top choice.

However, if there's any chance you might choose OHSU over that school I would go to the interview. Though the $200+ it costs to fly coast to coast is definitely nothing to sneeze at, it is nothing compared to potentially finding a school that is a better fit for you and you would be happier at for 4 years. If you feel like nothing is better than your current acceptance however, I would cancel.

If you dont mind me asking where did you get in that is better than OHSU in east coast??

Does anyone know if MD/PhD applicants hear about acceptance to both MD and PhD 6-8 weeks after the interview or is it just MD and we have to wait much longer for the PhD part?

Does anyone know if MD/PhD applicants hear about acceptance to both MD and PhD 6-8 weeks after the interview or is it just MD and we have to wait much longer for the PhD part?

You will hear from the combined program in 6-8 weeks, although don't be surprised if that answer is "hold". The program is small and accepts very very few applicants upfront.

So far as I know, you will never receive an MD-only acceptance from OHSU unless the MD/PhD program has already rejected you. However, it is much more common for the MD/PhD program to want an applicant, and to have them get stuck on the MD waitlist. Here, the MD program must accept you before the MD/PhD program can, so sometimes being out of state or having minimal clinical experience can hurt an OHSU MD/PhD applicant on the MD-side.

Also, for any MD/PhD applicants waiting to interview at OHSU, the remaining interview dates are 1/5, 1/19, 2/2, 2/16, and 3/9. One date may still be added to that list, but we're getting close to the end!

So it's pretty rare for someone to be accepted MD and be put on hold for the combined degree?

Hello

Does anyone know how many MD/MPH students are actually accepted into OHSU? I heard there are approximately 4-6 per class?

Thanks!!

I heard 2. I recently made friends with one since we are doing some of our research in the same lab. Next time I see him, I will ask.

Never heard of it happening, so I would guess that it's pretty rare.

There were 6 my year. Since the MD/MPH students pay their own tuition, I don't think the class size would have changed much (if any) since I came through.

Was the student you talked to an MD/MPH student or an MD/PhD student? There were only 2 MD/PhDs a couple of years ago, but so far as I know, the MPH classes are usually larger.

It's just so quiet in here! 😴

Hah Dianyla I always feel like posting with questions or comments but then I read about all the interviews people got as early as October and getting accepted. Then I have to slowly close my laptop and sit in a corner for an hour or so while I think about what I've done applying so late in the year...

Oh, you shouldn't feel bad about this for OHSU, the way they do their admissions. The vast majority of the people that interview early are all going to have to wait until May 15, anyway!

I'm at 6 weeks post-interview as of yesterday, but it sounded like their queue was up to 8 weeks by this point. And who knows what the holidays will do to that timeline. :xf: :xf:

Well good luck with your results 🙂

Yeah at every step OHSU has really taken significantly longer than any other school to get anything done. I'm just anxious because my file says it was completed on 12/09/10 though I finished my secondary the better part of two months before that. Add on the 12 weeks they like to throw around to that date and you've got one frazzled applicant waiting for an interview offer. 😕😕

You are right. I meant MD/PhD, and they do not have to pay tuition. Nor to the regular PhD students. I don't really get why medicine is so different. I know there are some PhDs in real academic fields who make very little, but science and techies make more than a lot of physicians. I happen to know a lot of them, raking in the salaries with no debt to repay.

Hi everyone!

Just wanted to know if anyone is interviewing on Jan 11? I'll be interviewing MD/MPH !! I am really excited and thankful for this opportunity! Anyone going to be interviewing with me on this day? I am from Cali 🙂

I share a similar curiosity Dr. Saturn. I know that in typical PhD programs there is no tuition costs because the students are teaching and or contributing to research. I feel like straight forward MD students would be willing to, or benefit from, contributing in a similar way.

Let's face it if debt weren't such an issue for graduating medical students there may be a lot more new general practice and family medicine physicians. Doctors would be less concerned with earning that dollar to offset the humongous student loan debt.

Zero tuition for MD students now!

...

Anyone...?

I think the bolded is the crux of the matter. PhD students in science are paid because (with the exception of first year) they are full-time employees contributing to the research and grant-earning potential of the lab. They are cheaper than paid employees, and generally work longer hours, so it's a win-win situation.

While med students wouldn't mind contributing, the fact of the matter is that they really aren't capable of contributing anything worth paying them for. The only reason why MD/PhD students are paid for their MD-years is so that they can afford to go into research without being overwhelmed by loans. Two hundred thousand isn't easy to pay back on a post-doc salary.

That being said, I do wish that medical school was cheaper. On the up side, there are still some loan-forgiveness programs out there for those who want to go into family practice in underserved areas. You have to ask about them, but they are out there.

I can't speak for all schools, but at OHSU there is still technically a tuition charge for PhD students. The difference is that the student isn't the person who pays the tuition. It gets paid by various sources that include training grants and research grants.

My point is that, from the school's perspective, no one rides free. It's not like OHSU is giving preferential treatment to PhD students and snubbing the MD students.

The US government funds training grants to ensure that there will always be a bunch of PhD's around. As you know from looking at acceptance rates at OHSU, there's no need to encourage further interest in getting an MD. There are already WAAAY more people applying than will get accepted, so it's not the sort of thing they need to fund. Bummer for us!

Very true, but it isn't training grants. It is research grants. A principle investigator applies for grant money to study something and "hires" students and post docs to do the work. This is the way it is at all research institutions.

After a 5 year PhD with $25,000/year stipend or med school with loans, the difference is more then 1/4 of a million dollars. Kind of staggering in my mind.

I wonder if physician shortages will ever change this dynamic? Or perhaps there are just too few schools?

Hello everyone 🙂

I interview on Tuesday for the MD/MPH program and just wanted to solicit some last-minute advice for those of you who have already interviewed. I have reviewed my application and have read up on the school and the MD/MPH program.... anything else I should do to prepare or any comments on your specific interview experience?? 😀

Hi AshleyC, I am interviewing for the MD/MPH program also but next Tuesday on the 11th. Best of luck!!

I'm interviewing for the MD/PhD on Wednesday. If you're living in Portland, I'd find their offices before so you don't get lost. I have very little time between interviews so I'm going to find their offices today.

Congrats on the interview invite! First, I would recommend reading the SDN interview feedback (link at the top of every SDN page). I found it accurate and helpful.

My interviews were last month and they were very relaxed. They were both approx 1 hour and both interviewers had thoroughly read my file (primary and secondary minus coursework, grades, MCAT), so make sure to review your essays and activities. Do a Google search on most commonly asked med school interview questions and think about answers to each, even write down some bullet points and character traits that you would like to talk about (with examples). You'll want to be ready for questions like: why medicine? how have you prepared for a career in medicine? what is your biggest strength? weakness? what do you think the biggest challenge will be for you in med school, etc.

I was asked a health care reform question, so be prepared for that (e.g. if you could wave a magic wand and implement 2-3 changes to the US health care system, what would they be and why). Also think about some ethical dilemmas (e.g. what would you do if your patient asked for an abortion? refused treatment on religious grounds? etc.) Finally, be sure to have a couple of questions for your interviewers (and not things that you can easily look up on the website). That shows them you are prepared, engaged, and interested. Overall, just relax and be yourself. Oh, and bring something to read, there will be lots of downtime.

Very true, but it isn't training grants.

Sorry, but I am going to stand by my assertion that the funding sources include both training grants and research grants 🙂

True for some students and post docs, but not all.

If you don't believe me, see for yourself:

OHSU maintains a database of their institutional training grants.

In that database, you can find the training grant for OHSU's MD/PhD program.

Is anyone accepted here and attending for sure? PM me.

Is anyone accepted here and attending for sure? PM me.

In my overly confident delusional mind I am. Does that count?

On a serious note though. Does anybody know if it's worth it to send OHSU an updated transcript from the courses I completed Fall term? I took biochemistry after submitting my applications and I've heard OHSU recommends it. Also is there a way to send it to all of the schools through AMCAS? The AMCAS wording is ambiguous and I don't want to do anything that will set back my application more than it already has.

OHSU actually requires biochem (or at least they did last year). I didn't send a transcript update, even though it would have showed a slightly improved GPA and that I had completed the genetics requirement. It could be a good idea, but I had a lot going on and didn't want to mess with it. I got in, but maybe it was close - I don't know. They just send a letter with the acceptance saying what it is contingent on. I sent an updated transcript after I graduated (since I wasn't done with my B.S. when I applied), and I was all set.

I also took some classes this fall and OHSU told me to send transcripts and update my GPA through AMCAS. However, when I contacted AMCAS, they said they do not accept updating grades to change your GPA after you submit your primary application (unless there was a mistake). I told this to OHSU about 2 weeks ago to see if I should send them a transcript and never got a response. I sent them to OHSU anyway (even if it might not change my application's GPA).

Interview invite today! I'm so excited! 🙂 I didn't think I had a chance since I'm OOS.
