Could we get a pie chart or something? 🙂

I just finished going through this entire thread looking for all interview invites, acceptances, and other status updates, with the goal of figuring out what day of the week they all happened on. I found 39 updates that break down like this:

Mondays: 8 updates
Tuesdays: 11 updates (two acceptances, two post-interview holds)
Wednesdays: 10 updates (two acceptances, three post-interview holds)
Thursdays: 5 updates (one post interview hold)
Fridays: 4

So... Tuesdays and Wednesdays appear to the the most common days to hear back, especially for post-interview updates.

Both my interview invite and acceptance were updated on Wednesdays. So Wednesday takes the lead for most updates. Maybe next Wed. will yield good news for those still waiting. :xf:

Forty-percent of post-interview updates shared on SDN are acceptances. This is a small sample, but it should still be encouraging. This rate is higher than we would expect based on some of the discussions on this thread. Possibly people are more excited about sharing the good news of an acceptance than sharing a post-interview hold. Also, SDN members (those neurotic weirdos) might be slightly more motivated/prepared/qualified than average.
People like you are what make SDN awesome. Let's just hope chuck84 doesn't have to make another waitlist progression chart this year, because he'll be accepted before then! :luck: :luck:

Lets see here.... as of today 10,627,200 seconds until the next hypothetical status update. Factor in sleep time... ONLY a little over 7 million seconds to obsess about OHSU and if I got in.... whoo....

Thanks! That's the plan.

So I have been complete here for 12 weeks without a peep. Should I basically consider it out if the question at this point? I'm OOS but still getting very antsy. Love Portland, love OHSU.

It's just really hard to say one way or another. I wouldn't give up all hope entirely, but in fairness I wouldn't say your chances are super either, sorry 🙁

Personally, I've been complete at Stanford for about 20 weeks, and still haven't heard a rejection from them. Every day when there's no update online and no letter in the mail I say to myself "Not dead yet!" My chances there look slim, but you're not rejected until they say you're rejected.

Hopefully you have some other options? Good luck! :xf:

Are you guys getting updates via the admissions portal? Or are these coming via email or phone? I've been complete just over 8 weeks, which I hear is still a little early, but looking forward to hearing something.

Actually, if I could make this thread a bit nerdier for a minute, the sample size is not really too small to start drawing some cautious, tentative conclusions from these data.

Based on previous discussions I would assume that only about 15% of interviewees would get a immediate acceptance or rejection, and that no more than 10% of interviewees would immediately get an acceptance without being placed on hold. (You could assume less than 10%, but that just makes the argument stronger). Thus, assuming they interview the same number of people as they did last year (555) we would predict no more than 56 people would be accepted immediately without being placed on hold, leaving 499 people being accepted/rejected after being placed on hold, or rejected immediately.

Using a Fisher's Exact Test and these data:

  • Accepted immediately: 4 on Student Doctor Network, 56 total
  • Other outcome: 6 on Student Doctor Network, 499 total

We find that the immediate acceptance rate of SDN members is significantly higher than expected (p = .015).

Some possible explanations:

  • SDN members are more likely to share news about an acceptance than a hold or rejection (I think this is very likely)
  • SDN members, on average, are more qualified for acceptance than general applicants (I think this is somewhat likely)
  • People who interview early are more likely to receive an immediate acceptance than people who interview later (possible)

But a "small sample size" is not an explanation for the high (40%) immediate acceptance rate.

All updates are via the portal but some updates (invites, acceptances) are also sent via email. If I'm not mistaken, pre and post interview holds are only updated on the portal. When you are invited for an interview, you are asked to call to schedule the day.

Attended the interview today and was told by one of the admissions ladies that we would be looking at an 8 week turnaround and even that number is quite optimistic. She also said all updates would be posted on portal only. I forgot whether she said acceptances would be notified via email or snail mail. And we SDNers are all well aware that most decisions post-interviews will be hold-pool as was confirmed today at my interview. Here's just hoping I don't get rejected right away as my second interview was rather ugly.

It's encouraging to hear that they're giving more realistic turnaround times now. I always chuckle to myself when I see the blurb in the portal saying "It may take up to 6 weeks!"

Oh, bummer. I'm sorry to hear that. 🙁 It wasn't by a certain infamous ENT was it? 🙄

I received a rejection notice through the portal today (pre-interview). I didn't get an email. I knew it was a long shot since I do not fit into the mission groups...

Thank you for your interest in attending the Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine. As stated in the secondary application instructions, it is the admissions policy of the School of Medicine to give preference to the following applicants:

Residents of Oregon
WICHE-certified residents of Montana and Wyoming
M.D./Ph.D. and M.D./M.P.H. candidates
Non-resident applicants with superior achievements in academics and other related experiences. (For this admissions cycle, superior academics is defined as a cumulative Total GPA, as reported by AMCAS, of 3.65 or higher and most recent eligible MCAT of 32 or higher.)
Those identified as Diversity applicants, through a holistic review of their application.

This year the number of qualified applicants in the aforementioned groups significantly exceeded the available placements. In reviewing your file it was determined that you did not meet any of the above categories. Therefore, we regret to inform you that placement in the entering class of 2011 cannot be offered to you.

We want to thank you for your interest in the Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine and wish you every success in your future pursuits.

Same. It's all good though. Got to take the bad with the good.

In the words of OHSU, I am "refuse". Sigh, I guess I won't be returning to the city where I spent the first half of my life anytime soon.

OHSU, I trust you found a good, sales-tax-free way to spend my application fee. 🙄

I just read the last page of posts and found it rather humorous. Having never posted on SDN before I only submit this information to add more data to the aforementioned studies and OHSU communication analysis.

Interviewed 11/4
Accepted 1/4
OOS

No Dianyla, this was a peds. Both of my interviewers do something related to peds.

Congrats cneb! Exactly 2 months between interview and decision, not bad. And the fact that you got accepted right away is quite an achievement.

I was interviewed on that same day, 11/4, but I haven't heard anything yet. Cneb did they e-mail you, call you or just update you portal? I'm instate, I wonder if that changes the wait time versus Out of staters?

It's more likely a function of which interviewers were at the first possible adcom meeting and which weren't. For my interview day there was a 2+ week spread in responses, both admit and hold. (I don't know if "it's all kind of random" is comforting, but there you have it.)

Still, you have a pretty darn good chance of hearing next week I would think. Good luck! And congrats, cneb!

hey everyone!

I just wanted to say I just got back from my interview at OHSU, which was on 1/11/11. I loved OHSU! The view of downtown Portland surrounded by the river was absolutely amazzzzing!

Also, The vibe I received from the student body was very mature, which I definitely like. I feel like my interviews went well, but who knows? 🙂 Here is to good ol' OHSU! 👍

P.S. The Sky Tram is AWESOME!!!! The guy let me ride on free since I was interviewing 😀

Daisy, I was rejected pre-secondary by half of my in-state schools. It felt like a real shot in the gut... Sorry to hear that. Keep looking forward!

I got an email, but my online status was also updated about the same time. I am also a BYU student, or at least was, I graduated 2 years ago. I assume you are because of your ID name. Did we interview at the university of Utah together?

Also rejected via the portal.....I was hoping I'd at least get a "refuse" email, but oh well!

Yeah, same here with the "refuse email." I just checked my portal and saw that they had reached a "refuse" decision back on 12/22.

GL everyone!

In case anyone is still waiting to hear back, here's my experience...

OOS
GPA: 3.8
MCAT: 34R

Complete 10/7
Interview invite 1/11/11 (lucky day!)
Interview 3/8 woo hoo! 🙂

I'm so excited to be interviewing at this school. Good luck to those of you who are still waiting, and congrats to those accepted already.

Today is 9 weeks for me (interview date 11/16) and no news yet. :xf:

Best of Luck Dianyla. I am definitely rooting for you! (you have been so helpful and supportive of all of us on this thread!)

As of today, it is officially 1 week since my interview at OHSU 1/11/11. haha 🙂

Awww, thanks! 😍

And I totally envy your interview date, because I really like 1s and 11s. I was ridiculously happy when I got randomly assigned locker #11 on my MCAT test date.

Well, today is only January 5th according to the Julian calendar, so maybe you'll hear in a lucky six days?

Rejected via portal on 1/13... I'm OOS and not one of the mission-based groups... oh well 🙁...

I'm also rooting for you, Dianyla!!! Hopefully you'll get your good news sooner than later! Good luck!!! :luck::xf:

And good luck to everyone else!

Oh no! I'm going to miss your blue-eyed tiger! 🙁

Thank you for the well wishes. Don't be a stranger! :luck:

I'm from rural Eastern Oregon and was put on hold post-interview back on Dec. 16. Is anyone else here from rural OR Eastern Oregon? If so, I'm interested in acceptances, interviews, holds, etc. for y'all. I just want to see how we are faring in this highly competitive process. Thanks!

For those who have been waiting over 8 weeks since your interview date... has anyone tried calling the admissions office for a status update? I think I remember someone posting something about they said you can call if you haven't heard after 8 weeks(?). Goodluck ya'll!

It sounds like the current turnaround time is 10+ weeks than 8, so if you haven't heard anything, chances are the admissions committee just hasn't considered you yet. (Or they considered you on Thursday and the office hasn't finished the paperwork.)
I did call Katy myself (back in November when the response times were in the 6-8 week range) and she was nice enough to tell me that my interviewers had both turned in their ratings. I don't think they can give out more than that over the phone, though.
That said, if it's been 14 weeks or something crazy, calling can't hurt. You'll probably have to leave a message but I doubt they'll mind hearing from you--just keep your expectations of immediate closure relatively low--and good luck!

For those who have been waiting over 8 weeks since your interview date... has anyone tried calling the admissions office for a status update?

Every single day that passes I consider doing this, but I always decide against it. I just don't think it's going to help anything. I don't think the admissions office is going to be able to tell us anything we don't already know: Your status isn't updated, it's already been six weeks, just wait longer, it will get updated eventually.

Also, I'm trying* not to focus too much on the initial status update since the prevailing wisdom is that most of us are just going to be put on the wait list anyway.

If anyone has had any luck calling and getting more info please do let the rest of us know about it.

*And when I say "I'm trying" I mean "I'm trying, but not succeeding"

Hey all. I've been a lurker on here for a bit, but I just wanted to contribute some information I have to the current discussion. I am in the same boat as quite a few of you as I interviewed 9+ weeks ago but still haven't heard anything. However, I just learned that one of the deans of the SOM passed away somewhat suddenly this weekend. I'm not sure what effect this will have on admissions, but I know that many in the OHSU community are grieving right now.

Anyhow, I just thought I'd share this with you all to give you some idea of what's going on at the school. If anything, it definitely gives one a bit of perspective on this whole process.

I interview 11/4 and still haven't heard anything. So it's been a little over 11 weeks. I called on tuesday and she was very kind, she said that they were a little behind and that I should hear something next week. The wait time for me will probably end up being around twelve weeks, I don't know if that is indicative for everyone else, but there you go. Good luck to everyone!

A bit of perspective? Yes. What awful, sad news.

So quick question, all I've got on my status page is 'Your secondary application has been processed.' followed by the date is was complete (early December). I was super late in applying to this school, and I'm just looking for a fluke interview.

Anyways, I'm OOS, and I only qualify in the academic mission group. Does this mean I'm still in the running for an interview for now?

OHSU does apparently give "refuse" decisions, so I'm reasonably sure that you're still in the running until you see that word.

We who interviewed have all been forewarned that OHSU tries not to give preferential acceptance to early interviewees, so any interview is a fair shot at acceptance. All you can do right now is hope for an interview. Good luck!

I'm in the same boat. Compete 11/8 and I qualify as a member of OHSU's mission based group. I'm hoping for that interview as well! Good luck!

Hopefuldoc you have no idea how reassuring your second point is to me. I have a complete date of 12/09/10, haven't gotten an interview offer yet, and am worried I shot myself in the foot.

Sorry to everyone with rejections 🙁. I know how you feel and I hope there are others schools on your list that go better. 🙂

I know how you feel Gara! I've been complete since September and am still on hold for an interview.
