Was your phone appointment useful? I've been thinking about making an appointment but I'm honestly not even sure what questions to ask? All I know is that I have to fill out the FAFSA...gulp.

Eh somewhat. She broke down the federal loans (Stafford and Grad Plus) describing how they work, how much you get, etc. That was useful for me because I didn't fully understand them prior to that. Other than that the take home message really was that right now all you need to worry about is filling out the FAFSA and you shouldn't stress out about it (although that lesson didn't take because its all I've been thinking about lately). The main reason I set one up is because I'm exploring other financing options - i.e. military - and needed to get a firm grasp on how the federal loans work. If you know that your going to use them no matter what and have a good understanding of them I would say just fill out the FAFSA and get your award letter and be on your way.

We also discussed the merit-based scholarships available. Bascially she said for incoming first-years they look strictly at your numbers and go down the line until they run out of money. Not much to do there but hope your stats rank high enough to get you some money. After the first year you can do other things to earn a merit-based scholarship although she didn't go into detail.

Hope this was helpful.

I've got my fingers crossed that my MCAT means some dolla dolla billz are headed my way.

But can I just say that I HATE that we have to submit our parent's finances to the schools as well? I'm 26... I'm married... I have a kid. My mommy doesn't pay my bills, my husband and I do. All the schools are like this, too. Lame-sauce.

Edit: I'm living in the past... I turned 26 in September. Whoops.

Is Temple known for giving substantial amounts of merit aid? Does anyone have more details about their non-need based aid?

Not a clue. All I know is between Temple and the other school I will likely be choosing between (assuming I get off their WL), Temple's probably more generous, because the other one is pretty notoriously stingy, and has no merit based aid that was mentioned at the interview day information seminar.

Anybody know the situation here in regards to interview invites? I've been complete since 9/22 and my status has been stuck on under review. Is it over?

It took me almost 2 1/2 months to get an interview invite and I was complete in July. I wouldn't count yourself out yet. I hope you hear something soon.

Thanks, that was really helpful! I think I may set one up because I don't have a good grasp on how federal loans work either. Also, I'm hoping to apply for the national health service corps scholarship so I'd like to get her take on my chances for that, what I can do to improve my application for those types of scholarships, etc.

Thanks!!

Lamesauce indeed. Do you know if there's a cutoff age? I'm 31, and have been paying my bills for some time now. There's other applicants in these forums in their 40s or even older. Maybe at some point they start demanding to see your children's finances?

My understanding is that there is NO cut-off. You could be 45 and if your parents are still able-bodied and working you have to report their income as well.

This is also the reason I got turned down for FAP. With our income alone (from earlier this year, we're in a much better situation now) we absolutely would have qualified, but I had to report my mom's earnings as well and it put me well over the cut-off.

Are you talking about FASFA? If so, there is an age cutoff.

No, I know that, which is part of why it's so infuriating. I'm talking about to the schools themselves. You fill out the FAFSA as well as give the schools your (and your parents... yay) financial info. They don't care if FAFSA considers you an independent student or not.

I believe it's for schools to determine how much need-based aid you get (or don't get)... awesome, right?

I can promise you that I will not be providing my parents info.

I can promise you that I will not be providing my parents info.

I have not looked into this much yet (gonna do that over the next two weeks before Jan/FAFSA hits), but for at least one school I am holding an acceptance at, they REQUIRE you to file parent's info in FAFSA in order to even be considered for need-based aid.

I would appeal this or not take the need-based, which is ~$8,500. You can still get that $8,500 in unsubsidized loan money, but uncle Sam doesn't pay the interest.

How does Temple compare to Drexel?

Received a Drexel interview, don't know if I want to go since I already hold a Temple acceptance (I am OOS)

There are some old Drexel vs Temple threads out there. Part of the consensus seems to be that people were leaning towards Temple for its clinical opportunities, while Drexel is in a better area. I'm in the same situation with Temple, but decided to not submit the secondary for Drexel.

But, it's all up to you!

Good luck with that, Moose. Lemme know how that goes... unfortunately, it may be required for you to get a financial aide package at all. Evergrey, I was told by at least two of the schools I interviewed at (it may not have come up at the third) that they required your parents' financial aide information. They flat-out told me they don't care how old you are, if you're married, you have kids, etc. 👎

From Temple's website:

Financial Aid Applications and Awards

Applications for financial assistance can be obtained through the Office of Student Financial Services. There are several different types of aid programs available to health professions students. The Student Financial Services office recommends you make an appointment to speak with a financial counselor to discuss all of the available options, either in person or by phone consultation. For all Temple University Medical School aid programs, as well as loan programs such as the Federal Subsidized Stafford and Unsubsidized Stafford Loans, and alternative supplemental loan programs, the following required application forms must be completed each year (applications may be obtained by mail by phone request).

1. Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
This form can be obtained through the Student Financial Services office or can be filed online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The deadline for completion for university based aid consideration for all new and returning students is March 1 preceding the next academic term. If you are filling out a paper application, it must be completed and mailed back to the Federal Aid Processor in the envelope provided. The information submitted allows need analysis to be done through a federally-approved formula. If you are applying for financial assistance through the School of Medicine, university-based programs or Title VII government programs, you must complete all student and parent sections on the FAFSA, regardless of your dependency status.

2. Income Documentation
If requested, signed photocopies of appropriate prior year federal 1040 tax returns and W-2s must be submitted to the Office of Student Financial Services as soon as they are available. Students applying for School of Medicine, university-based programs and Title VII programs must provide copies of their own and their parents’ 1040 income tax returns and W-2s. If a tax return is not required be filed by either the student or parents, a non-filer statement can be provided by our office for completion.

They're all like this. I hates it.

How does Temple compare to Drexel?

Received a Drexel interview, don't know if I want to go since I already hold a Temple acceptance (I am OOS)

I received invites to both around the same time, and interviewed/was accepted to Temple before my Drexel interview. I kinda wanted to cancel it but I still went at the insistence of friends and family. Quite frankly, I thought Temple was a lot better and that Drexel was weird. I can PM you why I thought that if you want.

Interviewed at both, got into Temple and still waiting to hear from Drex. In my opinion the advantage goes to Temple and its not even close. I would still encourage you to interview though because you may have different feelings.

Thank you guys for the input! I am pretty sure I am withdrawing my Drexel interview, so others can have a shot at the school.

It seems most of us are very pleased with Temple -- great to know when May 15th comes

I'm almost relieved that the three schools that interviewed me are all pretty much the same (read: obscene) tuition costs, including Temple since I'm a PA resident. I'm going to have a metric f***ton of debt, but at least I won't feel obligated to pick one school over another based on money (though financial aide packages will still come into play).

I think I'm set on Temple, but I know I shouldn't totally commit yet. We'll see if I get off the HPWL at Jeff and what Drexel says. I'm not going to withdraw from any of them until the financial aide packages go out, but I think it would have to take a REALLY sweet offer from one of the others to make me take them over Temple, but I also have a feeling Temple is going to give me a better financial aide offer than Jeff (which wouldn't be surprising), and God only knows about Drexel. Does that make any sense or am I just rambling?

I prayed and waited 7 weeks for an acceptance and got the correspondence sent on my status today. I thought the adcom was meeting tommorrow. I got this last year and it was the continuing candidates list. This would be the third waitlist I'm on this cycle. Anyways i'm gonna try to not let this ruin my christmas. Good luck to you all.

Hmmmm, I will fight that one tooth and nail. I will let you know. I can't imagine that I am the only one who would have a serious issue with this. Although I'm still waiting on financial aid package/info, we'll see how it goes. This actually makes me nauseous...

Aww sorry to hear that, Quiznos! Rooting for you to get off the waitlist. Stay positive and hopefully we'll see you in August! 👍

Impression I got from each school:
Jefferson - "You are all so smart, we have no way of differentiating between you so we give you all nothing. However if your parents are lower middle class or lower we will give you some aid."
Temple - "If you have a high GPA and a really good MCAT, we'll give you nice scholarships; otherwise you get nothing."
Drexel - nothing (aka if you're not very poor you get nothing).

These impressions don't mean everything, but it seems that the 3 Philly schools (other than Upenn) are among the most expensive in the country. I'm from NYC and I think I would enjoy Philly, but when they're all super-expensive I'd rather save 30,000 a year and go to my state school.
Out of those 3 schools I also think Temple is the best. My odds of picking Temple if I happen to get in off the waitlist are pretty much 0 though since they will have run out of aid by the time they get to me.

To Partyhouse: If the flight to Drexel is very expensive then it's probably not worth going. I got accepted to Drexel, and I'm waiting to see what my options are. Most likely though I will not end up there. The area is better than where Temple is, but honestly when I was driving through it, it didn't seem like such a great area.

Thanks I really appreciate the advice. I have been following your md-apps for a while (before you took it off), just wanted to say congratulations 🙂 I hope acceptances will keep coming for you

Thanks, it's still up, but I removed the link and specific comments just in case some adcom sees it and doesn't like something about it (because it is super-easy for them to figure out who I am based on stats, school and when I interviewed). I originally put the comments for myself and others because I know I'll forget most of those things later on, but not worth even the small risk.

Boo! I'm sorry, Quiz, but supposedly the WL gets a lot of movement! I've still got my fingers crossed for you!

I got pretty much the same impression, honestly. And I know they're all horribly expensive, but I have to stay here. C'est la vie.

Jefferson typically has the better reputation but I liked Temple more as well.

Regarding Drexel's area: the neighborhood north of Drexel isn't great, the area south of it is pretty nice, though. To the east you have the Boulevard then a crappier neighborhood (close to Temple), and due you have another school (Philly U) and then Fairmount Park, then Roxborough/Manayunk which is a pretty nice part of town.

Lame. Sorry, man. 🙁

I guess us NYers are spoiled (though not compared to MA or TX residents!). I have a feeling that Temple won't be so expensive for you and Jefferson would be. By the way why do you say Jefferson has a better reputation? Honestly before applying this year I never even heard of Jefferson.

I wouldn't say spoiler, but PA really gets the poop end of the stick when it comes to IS tuition. I'm pretty sure the "cheapest" resident tuitions are still over $35K/year. And that's my feeling, too. I hope it's right. :xf:

As far as reputation, maybe it's just a Philadelphia area thing, but basically, yeah, I always felt like Jefferson was more highly regarded than Temple. Honestly, while, in reality, Jeff and Temple are more evenly matched, I think the average Philadelphian would probably look at Penn and Jeff as more evenly matched. Does that make any sense? It may come down largely to location since HUP, Pennsylvania Hospital and Jefferson Hospital are all so close to each other and both schools are a hop, skip, and/or jump from Market Street.

That said, I had at least one friend from out of state say she assumed Temple was the better school, because she'd actually heard of it before (probably thanks to the various schools and large college sports presence, which Jeff doesn't have), unlike Jeff.

In terms of tuition, yes. Though, I wish our state schools were more protective of IS.

I was thinking that. I've heard before that Jefferson Hospital has a good reputation (in Philly, outside Philly I think it's unheard of), and no one that isn't from North Philly would walk into Temple hospital so I guess they kind of assume that those schools' reputations match the hospitals'. It seems that even Jefferson's faculty are much prouder of their association with Jefferson than Temple's faculty are with Temple (not that this reflects significantly on the education).
From talking to other non-Philly based applicants it seems that Temple is otherwise a lot more well-known.
In terms of tuition, yes. Though, I wish our state schools were more protective of IS.
On a percentage basis it seems like they are pretty protective (all are around 85% IS), but we only have four intermediate-sized state schools, so yea I definitely agree with you. Also the state schools have huge regional bias. If you're not from Western NY applying to Buffalo is almost like applying OOS. Similar story for applying to DS if you're not from the NYC area. The NY state schools can not be relied upon at all as safeties.

Yeah. :-(. got my Correspondence sent status change and also received my continuing candidates list acceptance there. Does anyone know how I can find out my position on a waitlist? Or if temple even does that?

If I remember correctly, at interview day they said that they DO rank the WL internally but they don't tell applicants where they are.

Accepted! Can't believe all the philly schools I applied to like me.

Congrats guys!!! I assumed they were going to leave you hanging until a few days before Christmas. 😀

so I just got the continuing candidates letter. Why do they make it seem like such a good thing?

"Congratulations you are on the continuing candidates list"
Am I supposed to be happy?

zzzz do they even reject people post interview?

Hey guys,

I interviewed back in Oct (like the 18th or something) and I still just have an interview complete status. I interviewed at the St.Lukes campus so I was wondering if that was why I had not heard anything back yet. Should I call in, or am I just getting impatient?

Thanks for the input and good luck to everyone else 🙂

Hey guys--

Congrats on the acceptances today! I was hoping to hear today after interviewing at St. Luke's on 11/9. Has anyone from St. Luke's heard anything recently? I'm also wondering if I should give them a call on Monday...

I'm still at interview complete for almost 6 weeks now...

I interviewed about two weeks ago, and I heard today but it was for main campus.

Got my acceptance on Friday as well, after interviewing 11/16.

Question: If we didn't interview at one of the clinical campuses, is it safe to assume we have been assigned to the main campus? The letter doesn't specifically say.

Thanks 🙂

Congrats. Pretty sure that whichever clinical campus you selected on the secondary is the one you will be assigned to.

If it says "This acceptance is for the Temple and affiliates clinical campus. You will have the opportunity to experience your year 4 electives at Temple or at any of our clinical campus or affiliate sites." you are all set for the main campus and the affiliate hospitals in/around Philadelphia.

interviewed st. luke's 11/2 and haven't heard anything. status online still says "interview complete."

Accepted on Friday (to main campus, I'm assuming)!!!! Interviewed last week of October and was starting to get worried. OOS, stats are right around average for Temple.
