I don’t proclaim to speak for others--only myself. However, my experience at PLFSOM is not a good one. To those of you with multiple offers, consider yourselves fortunate and pursue those other options. The same goes for those of you on the waitlist.

My main frustration with PLFSOM is the lack of a structured curriculum. In theory, the clinical presentation approach sounds good. In spite of this, PLFSOM’s basic science curriculum can be a frustrating undertaking for some individuals. After knowing what I know now, I would much rather learn in a traditional lecture format.

Again, I’m not implying that my experiences will reflect yours--there are individuals who thrive in this kind of learning environment. However, really examine yourself and your learning style before making the decision to come to PLFSOM. Don’t let the excitement of getting accepted to medical school blind you.

This made me laugh a little. I'm not sure if you're an actual student there or someone who wants to get in via others dropping (only 1 post). But, I know myself and others on the waitlist appreciate your post if it increases our chances of going to PFSOM 😉

🙄

You're not implying that your experience will reflect others but you're suggesting we accept offers from other schools because of it? Just because you're having trouble doesn't mean its the school or the curriculum that's the problem. People have trouble at every medical school, its hard for a reason. Maybe you're just not smart / hard working enough to handle medical education, regardless of the style of presentation. There's plenty of evidence supporting their educational structure, nearly all new medical schools are using the same style. Many believe that it time, all medical school will switch. Can't be that bad if thats the case..

Any waitlist movement here? I would love to go here.🙂

I'm not too sure how much wait list movement there will be here this year. Supposedly, even with those of you getting accepted elsewhere, the class is still full at this time.

She told me that they have seen a few of their students "drop" (go to other school etc) but at this time they are still full. She said this was because the class was slightly overfilled to buffer those that would get pulled off wait lists or take offers from OOS schools. She said that they may have to use the wait list a little later. That's what she told me... here's hoping for both of us:luck:

According to this poster, there has indeed been people drop, but evidently, the class is "still full".

I am unaware if the class is still currently full... She had told me that the wait may be just a bit longer this year because a lot of those accepted are holding on to their acceptance... Sorry, I can't be of more help. 🙁

I hope people who have ranked other schools higher get into their first choice school, so that we can get in El Paso.

Has anyone heard of anybody not getting waitlisted here? Or are we pretty sure that they waitlisted everyone they interviewed?

Yeah, there have definitely been those more fortunate than us that have gotten accepted. Still waiting and hoping though!👍

Did you submit your TMDSAS app for 2012 before you received your offer from El Paso to begin in 2011?

I emailed the admissions office and asked what the cutoff date is for notification of acceptance from the alternate list, and the reply was up to orientation (July 7th). That leaves a good month for alternate list movement, but it could also make the moving transition difficult. Here's hoping!

I just got in off the alternate list today!!! So there's still hope for others..good luck!

I got the call yesterday after watching Bridesmaids (lol). :xf: Here's hoping to more waitlist movements!! And anyone have any housing ideas?

I've gotten calls from area codes that start with 9 twice, like 916, and 925. I keep getting excited because I know El Paso starts with 9, and then it turns out to be a telemarketer or something.

I think their area code is 915. Good luck! You still got two more weeks. You never knowwwww!

how does el paso pick who to interview?

It's a beauty contest. They use the photo that you send in with your application to rank you based upon how much you look like someone that could star in their own TV medical drama.

That's encouraging 😉 Haha. Any advice for upcoming interviewees? I have one here August 11th and am extremely excited. Can't wait to see the school!

It's open file, so they see EVERYTHING in your file. If you had a slip up, or anything on your record you aren't proud of, be prepared for your interviewer to bring it up. Don't get flustered, just be prepared to give a solid reason/justification for why and what you learned from it.

Hey everyone, I just got an interview invite for Paul L. Foster and scheduled for 8/11. Are there any current El Paso med students willing to let me stay with them for the night before? I'll throw in a free dinner 😀

Hmm, well school just started for us, but last year you could request student housing and you would hear back from someone whether or not you got it. For me, personally, I never heard anything back and ended up staying at a hotel, but that's probably because my university email account was forever glitchy.

Anyway, did they say anything in your interview invite about requesting housing? They haven't told us anything about stepping forward and volunteering, so I'm not sure if they're maybe waiting a little longer until more of us first years get settled. A lot of second years are out of El Paso right now doing research and the like and they don't come back until early August, I believe.

There was not anything about student housing in the invite email, but another sdn user asked the admissions office about it. They said the official list of students willing to board interviewees is not compiled until September so it looks like we will have to try to set something up ourselves outside the school or just stay in a hotel. I understand if first years need time to get settled, though. If you or anyone other student wouldn't be inconvenienced there are a few of us on here who would love the opportunity to stay with you. If not, no worries 🙂 Congrats on starting you first semester!

I would volunteer myself for that week, but since I'll be out of town for a family reunion that weekend, I'll probably be needing to study more than usual to make sure I don't get behind. We're pretty new at this stuff and aren't really sure what the workload around that time is going to be like, since right now (until Aug.) it's mostly Spanish classes and meetings all day with no homework. Sorry I can't be of more help! If you guys can't find someone to stay with, though, I might be able to see if a few of us can organize a little dinner or something the night before to break the ice and answer any questions you guys have. I don't think they had anything official like that planned the night before I interviewed.

If nothing else, all of your interviews (if I remember correctly) will be in the afternoon, meaning you'll have all during lunchtime to visit and ask questions... even though we might not have any answers. 😛

Haha okay well I will try to see if I can find anything and if not I will probably PM you a week before we come interview. Thanks for all the help!

Thanks for the advice! Much appreciated.

And thanks for all of the help Beets!!

Hi, I know that most of you are already getting interviews but i just received my MCAT score and don't know what I should do.

I got a 25 on the MCAT and have 3.75 GPA. What are my chances of getting into Tech? Should I retake or just apply ASAP?

PLEASE HELP

retake.

If it was May I would definitely retake. But its July.... if I retake in late August or first week of September (the last few mcat dates available) how much can my score improve in just a month? I feel like either way I'm in a horrible situation..... What would you do if it was you in my shoes? Do I have any chance of getting in?

Retake as a back up in case you don't get in this round. If you have a solid application in service, medical exposure, etc, and a hard major, I think you have a chance if you can interview well.

But if you don't retake it, and you wait until February next year to retake it, you're putting yourself in the same relative time frame as this time around. If you think you can take it in August and improve even be 2 points, then do it. Otherwise retake it in January or something after studying all winter break long, and use it incase you don't get matched in February. If you get a pre-match, then don't worry about taking it.
