So a bit of bad news, I just called this morning, and the lady said all spots in the class are filled. They are now filling the wait list. I guess now we'll all be checking the mail neurotically instead of our phones... Oh well, its a speed bump, not a road block. Anyone else interview 12/9? Looks like people that interviewed 12/10 last year were hearing back in late Feb, I'm hoping that was due to the snow. My thumbs are raw from the twiddling...

$%!*, I called earlier this week and there were still Army slots available, I don't know how many... But yeah, I interviewed 12/9 as well, was hoping to hear good news soon.

Maybe the admission staff member included those who haven't been informed yet... (just trying to think on the bright side here)

Hopefully, but at the same time, the wait lists for AF and Army were completely exhausted last year, only Navy had a few left over.

Got an e-mail from the Army Laison today with 16 documents attached to fill out and an e-mail verifying my reservation for BOLC... kinda cool, well not the paperwork part, but you know what I mean? 🙂

Don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but wanted to correct the statement above. I was waitlisted AF last year and was not pulled off of it...

Totally! Every step that gets you closer during this process is exciting! Remember how it felt 8 months ago to have our application marked complete?? Congrats, AW.

I not only know what you mean, I'm quite jealous. Feels very strange being this idle. Did you contact the Laison first or did they just contact you? Good luck with all that paperwork 😉

No, I did not contact them. I just got an e-mail from them. 🙂

Nice! I'm really excited about all that...

I got the same two emails as ArmyWife. Exciting but also lots of paperwork!

I interviewed on 1/20/11. We were told that there were still spots available. I guess they've all been filled?! Such is life, I guess...

to everyone discouraged that "the class is full", a few points to keep in mind:

there are people from each service (though i dont know about PHS for sure, theres only 4 of them) who were accepted so late that they couldnt get orders to training. THERE IS STILL TIME

USUHS's wait list tends to move more than other schools.

After may 15th when everyone has to theoretically commit to one school, many people will be scared off by the military aspect of things and commit to other schools, thus opening up spots.

So my point is, dont give up yet, its not over, youre still in the fight. On the other hand, depending on your exact situation, you need to consider making plans for this next year/app cycle so that if unfortunately you dont get in you dont have all your eggs in one basket. Not being a downer, just saying you need to be a realist. (I had 3 police exams and ride-alongs i had to cancel when my waiver got approved, just saying be prepared)

USAF MS-1

Well letters have been mailed. Mine was sent Feb. 2. Result: alternate list. Does anybody actually get accepted from alternate or is that few and far between. I picked army with GPA: 3.89, MCAT: 34M and a some research. Any advice as to wheter I should hold on to a miniscule amount of hope?

That makes me so anxious to check my mail!!! Also slightly filled with dread since your stats are higher than mine.

So.... it's awfully quiet in here. I guess no one has heard anything lately? We had dropped to the third page of threads which is kind of sad, it's time to spark some life back into this thing. So I talked to admissions last week and they said that they would be sending out invitations to 2nd look this week. I guess those will be by snail mail, she didn't specify. So don't be too worried if you see a USUHS envelope in your mailbox. 😉 Good luck everyone!

^bump

I got my unconditional acceptance yesterday!

for lurkers next year-

interview 11/18 (Army)
acceptance phone call 1/12
conditional letter 1/19
unconditional letter 2/7

Anyone else receive a letter from the December interview groups? I haven't heard a thing...

WITH AN ACCEPTANCE PHONE CALL :xf:

(Am I the only one who opens the mailbox every day thinking "no whammies, no whammies"? Or maybe I'm showing my age too much.)
Can I get a hot tub?!?... Seems like no one has hear anything lately.

For those of you interviewing at USUHS on 10-February (and future Thursdays hopefully), a group of us MS-1s have to decide to offer a common meeting ground for the Wednesday night before for any and all interested. A slew of us are going to try to make it to Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery to grab dinner and answer any questions you folks might have ~6:00-6:30 pm. This is a completely informal and not-all-sanctioned event, but something we thought would have been nice when we were going through the interview process. The food is good and could be a cool opportunity if folks are able to link up. (www.rockbottom.com/bethesda)

Good luck to everyone interviewing.

Go Navy (yes my login is my old alpha for you USNA people...)

How did the pre-interview dinner meet-up go?

Hi everyone!

First of all, congrats to everyone in here--med school's a tough route, and it's awesome to see people pursuing it, and in some of your cases, succeeding too. I'm a junior in college right now, and it's obviously time for me to start the application process. My question to you guys is:

Why did you choose to apply to USUH? How does the service aspect (ie, 7 yrs afterwards) play into your decisions?

I'd love to hear what you guys have to say!

First and foremost, you must want or be willing to be a military doctor for at least 7 years. As a military member there are benefits and drawbacks you must be willing to accept. This is the biggest thing to consider when applying to USUHS. For me I know the life of the military well as I have spent 11 years in the Air Force (6 active duty).

Here is a brief article that gives some insight on one of the different aspects of USUHS being different.

Obviously receiving a paycheck and not going into debt is pretty much the opposite of any other medical school. Further, the 4 years of medical school at USUHS gets calculated into your retirement after 20 years (@20yr=24yr calculated service). If you have a strong desire towards military medicine, enough to be considering it a career to retirement, USUHS is a very attractive option.

The 7 year commitment is up to you. Most military doctors I know are happy to serve as a physician. The overall opinion is pay is adequate, however it isn't what you could make in the civilian side of things. If you are good with your money, civilian medical school debt isn't as too bad to overcome with civilian pay. So money should not be on the higher end of your priorities. All doctors I know who were trained/educated at USUHS realized the education received was easily on par of what the civilian schools.

For me there is a pride and esprit de corps you can only find in the military. I can think of few more honorable things, than looking after the soldiers responsible for our freedom.

👍
I must concur with the above. Having spent almost 7 years on active-duty already in the Air Force, I see the exact same things. There have been times that I thought about getting out of the military; however, despite the challenges and the abundance of frustration, it is the pride, esprit de corps, and camaradarie that keep me around.

Just got my conditional acceptance to the air force. 31P, 3.9s, 3.9overall. Complete in October, interviewed in early January. Surprised to hear back so soon. Its only been about a month since my interview.

Wow, congratulations! This gives me hope since I'm on nearly the same timeline as you, with my interview probably a week or two after yours.

When I got out of class today around noon I had a voicemail from Dr. Calloway, but when I called back I was told that she was out of the office for the rest of the day and that I should call back on Monday. Has anyone received a phone call that was not for an admit or did I pretty much get offered an acceptance?

Good for you guys!

I'm still waiting for something! Interviewed 12/09 :scared:

I'll be there on 2/17 as well. Hopefully the wait list will move a lot, as I had half my heart set on USAF. 3.7/38

I apologize if this is a dumb question. I am considering applying here, I am currently a civilian but I don't have a problem with the service commitment. I am curious about one thing. Do you have a choice of which branch of the military you enter? Again sorry if this is stupid.

There is no such thing as a stupid question. Yes you do have a choice of branch. Army, Air Force, Navy, or Public Health Service. You give them a preference sheet on your interview day. You rank them in order of preference and categorize each service "strongly desire appointment to service" --> "Although not my first choice, I would accept an appointment to this service" --> "I would not accept"

Sorry if this is also a stupid question, but what does one specifically do in the Public Health Service?

Certainly not a stupid question. Especially since I am uncertain myself. I personally submitted my preference stating I would not accept an appointment to PHS. Here is a link to the PHS website.
http://www.usphs.gov/profession/physician/default.aspx

I defer any further information to those whom know better.

Great, thanks for the link! Anyone who could provide further help/information, that would be tremendous.
