So heres a question that I don't think will get answered if I email the admissions office (They might be on christmas break) but I would like to think about over the holidays. I am currently waitlisted and as my #1 branch I put Public Health Service. It wasn't until my interview day on 9/30 that I found out there were only 4 spots (2 for Indian Health Service and 2 for National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Disease) for PHS. Call me crazy but my dermatologist was a USUHS alumni and worked in the Indian Health Service, one of my professors that wrote a reference for me was a public health service officer and I currently work at NIH.

I thought my chances were decent of getting into the IHS of PHS since I interviewed the first month and it went well but I guess the four spots filled up fast. My second choice was the Army, then AF, then Navy. So heres my question. I realize that what waitlist you are on matters so should I request to change my waitlist to Army or do they automatically consider you for your #2 choice? I would really like to be in IHS but carefully thinking about the interview day presentations I am just desperate and want to get into medical school. I would be happy serving my country in any branch.

It would really help if the four people accepted to PHS just flat out said they got accepted and have fully intend to matriculate to USUHS so I can switch to ARMY. Sorry for the long post.

If you are willing to serve in the Army, I don't think they've filled the spots yet, so you'd probably get a spot - however, you will not be able to switch back.

I have no idea what happened last year with PHS and acceptances, but I'm pretty sure that during my application cycle they exhausted the PHS waitlist - I say this because one of the 3 PHS we have in our class wanted Navy, but she showed up the first day in her PHS uniform. I didn't talk to her about it, but I would assume that means she changed her preferences somewhere or they offered her a spot in PHS even though it wasn't her first choice.
The only people who would know for sure if the PHS waitlist moves each year or if my year was just a fluke would be admissions. You could try them, I don't know if they're around but I do know that the family medicine office is open this week so there's a shot the admissions office is open too.

Hey everybody, quick question: My younger brother really wants to attend USUHS (make it a family affair), but needs to pick his grades up. Does anyone know how USUHS looks upon students who complete SMP's. We are from Texas so I know Texas Schools love this, but I was seeking input on how USUHS specifically feels about it. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

I can't help too much but I do know they usually accept one or two from Gtown's SMP each year based off of the SmP's website.

Placed on the alternate list😕. Interviewed 10/28, pledged Army. Relieved knowing I can realistically cross them off my list; though I feel a bit slighted especially since I have a handful of top-notch acceptances already. Who starts a letter, "We are pleased to inform you...." just to tell me I'm an alternate (apparently a step below waitlist)? Haha, ridiculous:laugh:. Still enjoyed my USUHS experience.

DocBell is right that they do accept at least a couple from the GTown SMP. I can attest to this because I did the SMP there, and I am currently conditionally accepted. I also knew at least one other guy who got in to USUHS who was in my class.

I hope that helps a little. Good luck to your brother

Merry Christmas everyone! got my first and only med school interview with USUHS on Monday for 2-17. don't want to get my hopes up too high, but it's hard not to hope...

Merry Christmas to you too! I feel the same way. It is hard not to get the hopes up. Mine are...way up. Oh well. Best of luck to you.

tahtnot, that's about the time that I interviewed last year. Not to be a downer, but most likely you will be interviewing for a spot on the waitlist. Be e that you prepare well for your interview, know how you elaborate on experiences you described on your application, know why military medicine appeals to you, and be CONFIDENT 🙂

The wait will be the longest one of your life. I was offered a spot on the waitlist, but was stuck in limbo up until August (didn't know if I should move in town, accept another job, etc.)

I know one person who was called the week before class started, so there is still hope. Good luck!

Anyone know when the next round of decisions will be dealt?

Man. November 18th interview here. I hope we hear back soon. I also hope it's more than a wait list or rejection. This school's my number one.

Hey, it appears they do look favorably upon students who complete extra schooling. I have have been unconditionally accepted after completing a post-bacc program at UPenn (not really an smp, but same idea).

Got a fall grades request and interview update today. Thought that I was pretty much done with USU at this point  guess not. Does USU reject pre-interview? I don't really want to read through 10+ pages since my last post in here to find out... yes I'm lazy like that lol

I wouldn't reply to their email 😉. Good luck at AZCOM friend, props for Arnold's rear double bi pose.

I am applying next year. Do people mind sharing there stats? You can inbox me as well! Thank you

So interviewed on 10/28 - really hopeful - but still no word, no acceptance, no wait list, no alternate list, no rejection - should I hear something?

Based on last year's thread, there should be some activity come mid January, probably including everyone who's interviewed up through the end of Nov. I'd say you've got a good chance of hearing something soon. Does anyone know if this is correct: Navy at waitlist, Army & AF still open?

For those of you who have interviewed were there any family members at the A.M. briefing or on the student tour? I know the email they sent to interviewees said family welcome, but I was just curious if people actually took advantage of that. Also what are some of the questions you asked your interviewers? I think that is always the worst part of my interviews! Thank you so much for all of the help.

I'm about to withdraw...as soon as I decide whose email to send my letter to (any ideas?). I hope one of you gets the spot (it's for Navy). Thanks for all the helpful advice. Good luck, everyone 👍

Interviewed 10/21 and I don't remember seeing any family members that day at all. I don't see where it would have been a problem or anything though.

Good luck

Interviewed on 10/14 and there was at least one family member there. I interviewed last year on 3/11 and there were families at that one too, I brought my wife then. I wouldn't bring your parents but a spouse shouldn't be a problem.

So I am prepping for my interview, and we have the interview update form, and we must provide fall grades? Did everyone do that? Thats not good! Got a C because of attendance and was hoping I was not going to have to bring that up?!!!

I have a question concerning the service rank.

Let's say I put Air Force as #1, Navy #2, Army #3

Considering that I am academically qualified. If the slots in the Air Force is filled and there are open slots in the Navy, does that mean I will go on the Air Force waitlist or will I get a slot in the Navy?

Thanks.

They specifically ask you for it when you check-in. I don't know if those that did not bring it had to fill it out at that time, but I don't believe your interviewers will see your grade updates so you probably won't have to talk about it, but the admissions committee will see it.

So I filled out that form, do they ever require a final transcript in this process?

Not during the process, but official transcripts must be mailed to the school upon matriculation.

my understanding is you'd get AF waitlist. The way they do it, 2 and 3 are inconsequential

One guy at my interview date brought his mom. She left after the morning briefings. I brought my girlfriend and it wasn't a problem. She left from noon to 3 for the interviews, then came back to come on the simulation center tour. It was really nice.

Did anyone else get an email from their sponsor today?

Not yet, wish I had though 🙁

Does anyone know where we can find a timeline and/or list of things to do for this whole process? For example, when we will begin getting other paperwork to complete and what that entails, if we need to send in anything other than official transcripts and that paper to hold our spot until May 15, etc.

I've been working on stuff for Medical school apps for so long that I'm getting anxious doing nothing now.

If 2 and 3 are inconsequential why are there posts from last year with people on navy waitlist getting offered a spot other branches?

You should have gotten a yellow sheet on your interview day that has a few important dates, as well as contact information. For example, you should be able to find the website for your specific officer training. The Commissioned Officer Training website had a lot of useful information and answered several questions that I had.

Idk but I had the same impression as Thunder. They told us on our interview day that it didn't matter how we ranked the services because they only look at choice 1.

Yah, I have that sheet but it doesn't talk about when you'll get your paperwork for commissioning and what kind of information you may need for that and the officer training websites really only have information pertaining to the training and immediately before. None of the paperwork I have so far talks about anything before May 15 at the earliest.

From what I've seen in other USUHS forums it seems that they may let you know if there are other spots available if you call them when you are waitlisted, but they make you send them a new preference sheet with the service with the spot open as #1.

From my understanding, if you're an ideal candidate, and are waitlisted, USU will notify you of spots available in other branches. I was waitlisted last year, but was not offered a spot in any other branches.

Pinknoise. If you dont mind me asking when did you interview last year? and what service did you put?

So I forgot my phone at home today, went home for lunch and forgot it again. I realized after coming home from work that I had a message from Dr. Calloway on my phone!! Tried calling her, but Maryland is a two hour difference, so I'll have to wait until tomorrow to call her back!! Ahhhhh!!

Rechecked my phone. She called me twice!! Once at noon and again at 1pm. DOH!!

On the message Dr. Calloway said that the phone lines are not working, there are no voicemail system, and the line that she was calling me from was the only line intact. How ironic is it that USU is have phone problems? Anyway, to avoid making assumptions, I decided not to notify any friends or family until I get confirmation from Dr. Calloway tomorrow. (I'm still bursting out of my skin though!!)

Pinknoise, can you let me know when you interviewed and what branch you put down as well?

Thanks.

Just received my conditional acceptance into the AF. Lol, Dr. Calloway apologized saying that she realized that it was 5am MY time after she had called. Anyway, it's 5am and how can anyone go back to sleep after hearing such great news. So here I am 🙂

Congratulations PinkNoise! I know the feeling, my call came at 5:30am my time back in Nov. Look forward to being your classmate at USUHS this fall! 😀

Congrats Pinknoise! Always nice to start the morning off with some good news 👍

I got the call from Dr. Calloway about 3PM yesterday. I was waitlisted for the Public Health Service and pretty much described my situation a few posts back. I was offered a spot in the ARMY not PHS but I'll take it. A little about my timeline and stats

GPA cum, science, MCAT 3.67, 3.69, 31 O respectively

interviewed 9/30 put PHS as #1 choice and Army #2
medically disqualified 10/20/2011 and initiated a waiver
waitlisted for PHS 11/25 (Got the letter on Black Friday)
Got the Call 1/5/2011 offered a conditional acceptance in the Army and found out medical waiver approved for PHS.

Today I switched my branch preference to the Army and have to get my medical file waived again by the army. Congrats to all accepted and goodluck to the rest of you on the waitlist.

Haven't used this before but I've been reading everyone's posts so I thought I should post.

Interviewed 10-28, 3.3 science GPA, 34MCAT, offered alternative services but decided to stay on the Navy Waitlist on 1-6

what is alternative services? didn't here about that my interview day

Thanks everyone! I've been reading about other peoples acceptances for the past two years. It feels great to have an acceptance under my belt.

Congrats Quiznos!
