Rebecca Patterson called me yesterday to say that my medical waiver had been approved. She said that a bunch got backlogged (for Army at least) and that she just receive a bunch of decisions of waivers on Wednesday. Finally!! That was really making me nervous! Unconditionally accepted..... 😀

Do they send the fall grades request to everyone who is still in the review process? Also, before they requested my fall grades they sent me some questions to answer; is that typical?

The fall grades request sounds like a normal thing, but I'm not sure. As far as the questions to answer, that is normal. They typically tell you to explain yourself if your GPA is lower than normal, your MCAT scores are lower than normal, or if you don't have the amount of clinical experience they prefer. There may be other common questions but those are the ones I have seen on the USUHS forums that seem to be pretty common. If they are asking you to send in your fall grades and explain stuff on your application that should mean you are still in the running (as it would not make much sense to ask for more information from someone they have already chosen to reject).

Thanks! Just checked my email and I got an interview invite 🙂

Congratulations! Good luck with your interview, when is it going to be?

Hi everybody. I interviewed last month, and in the meantime I wanted to know if USUHS is down with receiving additional material, such as new LOEs. I believe they said so in briefings, but I wanted to make sure with my favorite SDN buddies. 🙂

Thanks in advance.

I don't know what their official stance on extra materials is, but I sent in tons of extra stuff and they never told me not to and I'm accepted. Just make sure that it adds to your application in some way.

Anyone know the best way to get to USUHS from New York Medical College? I am flying in from CA to White Plains for my 1/18 interview, then I'm headed south for my USUHS interview on 1/20. I've no idea how to navigate the east coast. Thanks in advance. 🙂

Hi Esteban, you could take the MTA Metro-North down to NYC, then take one of the Chinatown buses to DC. That's probably the cheapest way to do it (~$30-35 total). Here are some websites:

Good luck with your interviews!

tritown, in the past, I politely asked if the admissions office could add the letter to my admissions packet and have always received confirmation that the additional information has been added to my file (took about a day). I say go for it!

Anyone else here besides me trying to get a medical waiver? Id like to know how things are going on your end

I'm trying to get a medical waiver and I have a conditional acceptance in army. The funny thing was I applied for a waiver in october and my branch preference was in Public Health. I finally got the waiver for PHS then I got a call from Dr. Calloway offering me a spot in the army even though I was on PHS waitlist. Now I have to apply for a waiver again.

Got the rejection letter today in the mail🙁

Does anyone know if it's ok to contact their admissions director to discuss how to improve your application? Hopefully I'll get picked up by one of the Texas schools, but if not then it would be best to probably start working on my app now.

Thanks.

Can anyone who knows from previous years or who is at USUHS now weigh in on the timeline for possible acceptance if you are waitlisted (navy) in January. It seems folks have reiterated that the waitlist at USUHS moves quicker than more traditional programs. Anxiously waiting to know what im doing with my life.... thanks for the info

I received an interview invite by e-mail on 12/22/2010 for 2/17/2011 and responded right away saying I would be attending. Shortly after, I sent an e-mail to Mary Ann with my host questionnaire form.

However, I never received any other word from them. Is that normal or did I miss something?

I got an invite for 2/10 on 12/21 and also responded right away; I haven't heard anything either.

From my experience last year, the waitlist didn't move until after May 15th.

Big truck guy sorry to hear that. when was your interview? and what was your service preference?

Got the unconditional acceptance letter today! Whoop!

Actually I didn't even interview. I guess it must be because of my relatively low GPA, because I had a 36R and a boatload of leadership experience in a senior military college's Corps of Cadets.

Oh well, at least I still have my Navy scholarship.

Congrats! What branch were you accepted in? How long did it take for your security forms to be cleared (I'm waiting on my unconditional)? How did you hear about your unconditional (email or phone)?

bigtruckguy3500: Have you been accepted to any other schools? If USUHS is your top choice, maybe consider completing a post-bacc program (which an exceptional GPA) to help if you decide to reapply next year?

I'm accepted into the Navy (have to lol). Lucky for me, I've had a security clearance for a few years so I didn't have to wait. From what I remember, it took a couple of months when I did it. I just recently got a letter in the mail (no phone or email). Also I called at some point, and they told me that the unconditional acceptances were sent out in batches, which means that someone could have everything already done but wouldn't get the letter till like a month or more after. I know it'd be nice to have the paper in hand, but clearances are no big deal so I wouldn't worry (unless you answered yes to the being a terrorist part lol)

For those interviewing this Thursday, 1/13/2011, does the welcome package say something about a Wednesday night social thing at Rock Bottom in Bethesda? We [MS1's] want to make it a regular thing, but not sure it ever made it into those welcome & orientation letters.

I might show up for a bite to eat and some quick Q&A, but we're all are pretty slammed this week so not sure... If anyone here is planning to go then I'll encourage more students to attend.

👍

no, there wasn't any mention of it. i'd be interested in going though!

Just got the call at 12:30 east coast from Capt. Calloway- conditional acceptance, Army! Interviewed 11/18. Best of luck to everyone still waiting! I'm off to join the facebook group! Thanks everyone for all the helpful posts all the way back to July and August!

Congrats Thunder!

Do they generally call with acceptances for everyone who interviewed on same day? (I also interviewed on 11/18) Or is it branch specific?

Thanks

Woo! Congrats ThunderHorse! Did you prefrence Army?

MS1's are cramming for a Genetics exam on Friday, then Neuro on Tuesday, then biochem shelf exam the following Monday; apologies to anyone coming to interview who doesn't get a host to stay with. I think one or two don't find a host each week, but do still ask for one if you'd like one. Thanks, rio, for the reply. I thought the Rock Bottom thing was announced in welcome/orientation packs but seems not... Sorry it didn't happen this week but feel free to PM me if you have any questions about the area.

Anyone coming to interview NEXT week who would be interested in an informal meet & greet at Rock Bottom on Wednesday evening?

BTW congrats to all who are at varying levels of acceptance! I know it can be a nerve-racking transition between applicant, interviewee, conditional acceptance (medical waiver applicant), unconditional, waiting for orders, heading to training, getting THROUGH training (can be fun), moving to Bethesda (feel free to PM me with apartment/location questions), getting oriented, etc... Whatever stage you're at just don't give up. If you really want it, be persistent. 👍

FYI the 2015 class will be special because it's the first class to have the new "reformed" curriculum. I don't know all about it, but feel certain that it will be an improvement and really should not discourage anyone choosing between other medical school acceptances. The administration seems to take student feedback regarding academics quite seriously, so you will all benefit from previous years of complaints.

Finally, if/when you're a USUHS MS1, don't procrastinate by trolling on SDN forums when you should be studying Genetics. 🙄

stupid question but how do you check the status of your waiver without talking to rebecca patterson. I logged on to dodmerb but it just displays the appointment schedule from weeks ago.

ChaseH87, pinknoise, Armywife06, and StemiAlert, thanks for the well wishes! I'm psyched to get up there and get started with you all.

MarylandHockey- IMO, many times they have called over 2 call days. This seemed to happen a lot around Thanksgiving- on a 1st of the month, they would finish one interview group's acceptances, then call 1/2 of the next interview day's acceptances, not get through them all, then finish that day's on the 15th. That seems to have happened more than once.

Sweetlife- I put Army as 1st choice

Just checking: when you say you logged onto DodMERB, do you mean the DODMETS website (https://www.dodmets.com/) or the DODMERB website (https://dodmerb.tricare.osd.mil/default.asp) . The two different websites confuse a lot of applicants, but are completely separate from one another (the latter being the one where you would check for the status of your waiver).

Many questions about waivers can be answered here:
http://www.serviceacademyforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=20

Larry Mullen, Deputy Director at DoDMERB, has the motto "Leave no applicant behind." He means it. If you don't find the answer you're looking for, or even if you feel like the process is somehow stalled, then you can email him at [email protected].

So far I see one interest in Rock Bottom on Wednesday. Anyone else? I'll be sure to check back by Tuesday for a head-count and details about where/when/who/etc... 👍

Erald Coil is right about Larry Mullen, literally nothing registered in my whole medical process without emailing him. Once you have been medically disqualified it is no longer in his office though. For the waivers you have to contact Rebecca to find out what's going on, you can check the DoDMERB website but that wasn't updated in my process until after I had already heard back from USUHS about the waiver... And I checked DoDMERB obsessively every hour while I was waiting. (my experience may have been unique, but I have a feeling it is par for the course with DoDMERB)

Waitlist letter today. Interviewed 11/18. My preference was Navy. It was a little bittersweet with the Navy already being at capacity and this being my best case scenario...but it's also not an actual acceptance and there's more waiting to be had. I'm also worried because I'm waiting for the results from my physical and I'm pretty sure I have a disqualifying condition. It's true that you need to be medically cleared prior to being pulled from the waitlist, right?

Got the kiss of death today, guess I won't be rejoining the Air Force after all.
