I think we will just go out there another weekend and look at areas to live with good schools (our main concern with one starting kindergarten next year). He is already asking how long he will have to be in school, to manage his expectations I let him know that I am in his eyes an 'old man' and I am still in school...

Hoooah!! LOl, love the rivalry humor. I've heard Walter Reed had a plethora of brand new housing, where most of the med students get put in some cul-de-sac together. The spouse club website doesn't say much about it, but my buddy who is MS-1 at USUHS lives there with a bunch of other students and says it is pretty great.

Those seem like perfectly good reasons to me, I'm going because I think my mom wants to get rid of my dad for a few days and send him with me. If it is another "death by powerpoint" forum, I don't know if I can handle that. I'm not sure whether attendance will make or break an application, as I am still on the "waitlist" for Navy.... UGG!

PS, go navy beat army.

I'm still not even sure if I made the waitlist. Ugh. The not knowing is killing me. I was wondering if attending does affect waitlist status? I still need to take a trip out to California to apt hunt in case USUHS doesn't pan out and I already know I love the USUHS if it does. Does USUHS know if we are holding acceptances elsewhere? I don't want to seem less interested or anything so if I have to scrounge up the funds I could.

Granted this angst is all dependent on confirmation from the school I even got the invitation for a reason...

I heard about the housing at Walter Reed as well. I am a bit turned off by the though of on-post housing and it is a pretty good commute from there (so I heard). I was planning on looking into that as an option as well.

I have already made up my mind about USUHS, so I am more focused on finding a place to live and I can do that later.

I am not even going to acknowledge your post script comment...
 
1/20 interview, just got my "alternate" letter today. Life goes on...
 
has anyone been taken off of any of the waitlists yet?
 
The school let me know I am on the waitlist. 🙂 Second look email just beat my letter by 5ish days and counting. At least I already know it isn't too bad of news. I do have a question though...how is the waitlist ranked? Is it just the day we were put on it? I am assuming I am pretty far down since it is already March and I interviewed months ago. At this point I am honestly just happy to still be in the game.
 
If super applicant becomes eligible to be wait listed today (cleared medical or whatever), they would slide into the number one wait slot. As people become available they slide into place somewhere within the rankings as admissions sees fit and not necessarily placed at the back.

I was told that interview date has nothing to do with your rank on the wait-list. The only harm in a late interview is having more, or all, the slots already filled and thusly are on the wait list ranked accordingly.

Thanks for the info. For now then I'll work on that back up plan and keep my fingers crossed.

I'll let you know if I ever get it. I emailed the school asking about my status because of the second look invite. They responded that I was just placed on the waitlist. Supposedly a letter has been mailed but I don't have it yet.

Oh, I see. Well that's good. Makes you wonder why they don't just send email notices when they put you on the waitlist.
 
my understanding was the wait list was unranked, they pull applicants off as spots become available based on who they want, not based on when you were put on it.

Can anybody confirm?

I fee like I read on one of the handouts from the interview day that they pull from the waitlist based on prior service, strength of application, and date of interview...though I doubt interview date would have nearly as much influence as applicant strength and prior service.

I was told that the waitlist is ranked based on their assessment of the applicant, not based on interview date, but they won't tell you what rank you have.

Coming straight off the waitlist letter, website, and all the forms on the interview, waitlist is ranked by: interview date, prior service record, academic strength, and overall competitiveness. (not in that order)

When I called admissions (before I knew my status), I asked about the waitlist and they said it had nothing to do with interview date and it was all about your strength as an applicant.

That aside, the waitlist at USUHS moves quickly as many applicants use it as a 'back-up' school, so I think the waitlist here is actually a pretty safe spot when compared to other programs.

I would wonder at the numbers of people accepted to USUHS and their state school and how many end up at USUHS...
 
Hey All, I haven't been too active on SDN lately, so i tried to read through a few posts to make sure I'm not asking the same questions. For the second look weekned, is there a way for us to RSVP? Also, I noticed that a few others also mentioned how the details were pretty short. Any idea on the time of day and dress code (wondering if it is more business casual or interview style)? I am guessing that information may be forthcoming. Also, I saw that someone asked about bringing family, spouse, ect. My girlfriend wants to come, and I would love to have her there as well, I just am a little unsure how appropriate that is, since we are not married or engaged. Thanks for any feedback.

To ALL: Admissions will be sending out hardcopy letters for second look weekend to follow the initial "save the date" email. It'll list all details.

This is the new Navy, bring your girlfriend, girlfriends, boyfriend, or whatever, I don't think anyone will care.

So anyone heard how the air force bulds a base?

First they build the O-club, and golf course, then the housing and the commissary and food court. If ANY money is left over after that, they build something called a runway.

I concur on accuracy. I myself got married at Lakenheath in the United Kingdom.

To make matters worse when assigned to an Army base I received a low standard of living allowance!

They do the same on deployments as well. If anyone has ever seen Balad (Anaconda), they know what I am talking about. They had two pools, movie theatre and even a special fenced MWR (morale welfare and recreation) compound to keep out the Army guys from messing it up.
 
so i'm going to second look to decide whether to do USUHS or HPSP. I'm really interested to see if it is medicine in the military, or military in medicine, if you know what I mean.

Anyways, anyone else having trouble with the online registration? I have no idea whether or not it submits after filling out the form.

Yeah I wasn't sure about the form either. I filled it out and submitted it but nothing happened. I emailed admissions but they haven't gotten back to me because its the weekend. I'll post whatever they say.
 
Not to sound completely behind (as usual) but online registration? Was there another email I didn't get?

I'm mulling over options as well, but having a hard time justifying HPSP with prior service given that most likely participate in military match either way, and after that and service commitment it's too close to retirement to pass up...

Yeah, it's tough to weigh the options. For Navy HPSP, you can participate in the civilian residency match instead, and then serve back your time afterwards. However, you can't do both civilian and military match at the same time, so it is a gamble. I see HPSP as a great option to pursue other interests if military medicine becomes undesirable, because of the shorter commitment. I dunno, hopefully i'll have it figured out by May 15th, and i still have to get off the waitlist for USUHS too.

Save as a .pdf and send as an email attachment if the submit button doesn't work. You won't get any notification of submission if you click on the button.

I see your point, I would just assume to participate in military match (when you already have a commitment following, the benefits of it are good). I believe that if you do military match you owe the greater of the two on a 1 for 1 payback, Med School (4yrs) or your residency time. So depending on what you choose to specialize it could be nearly a wash. That being said, I don't think there is a wrong answer. Well actually there is a wrong answer, and that is Navy, but you already know that. But I know for many it isn't a choice and I respect the Naval Academy as a quality safety school for kids with aspirations of attending THE Academy (West Point).

When I am weighing USUHS against my state school, I am looking at going to med school through traditional loans, etc. I was looking into the National Guard ASR program but apparently there is no funding for it this year. It is hard with a family, so that is the big X factor for the whole decision for me...

We are looking at all options too, it'd be a shame to not at least think about it. I'm kind of shocked that I got interviews and acceptances to out-of-state schools, and my state of residency (CT) hasn't even emailed me after my application submissions. Ehhh, connecticut sucks anyways. I think there are many many bonuses to a career in military med, I'm just interested in a contingency plan, possibly.

I was surprised to get into my state school (CO), I think I know which way I am leaning I just want to make sure I am well informed and don't rush to decision.

Really?!? Really?!? That doesn't even make sense... You can't even have a car until the end of your Cow (Junior) year... Come on man!

I think your whole decision process between serving as a career Dr. in the military (USUHS) or putting in the time and moving on (HPSP) is based on faulty logic. You assume that the Navy technically qualifies as 'Military'. I recently watched a 'documentary' on the Navy and it seems that all you guys do is play beach volleyball with your dog tags on, do horrible versions of karaoke as pathetic attempts to pick up desperate cougars, recklessly drive around your standard issued Honda Ninja motorcycles, and unnecessarily wear oversized aviator sunglasses even during periods of limited visibility.

I am in a similar position. My other option is to do it the traditional way with loans. My tuition is taken care of though so I would only need loans for living expenses which is more doable but still...granted I'm only on the waitlist but it will be a tough decision if I make it off. lol, that's pretty funny. Actually, you just described navy pilots. Us submarine guys usually just drink a lot and cry, especially if we are in the shipyard.

tuition covered?? what secrets have you unleashed, or did you make a sacrifice to Krom? Loans for living expenses shouldn't be bad at all!! Or... you could get a job at Red Lobster or something during school, I'm thinking Burger King myself.

Meh I was thinking Starbucks. At least then I would have consistent acess to caffeine. And I umm.. sacrificed a goat? lol. No it was just an incredibly fortunate turn of events. If I go to the other school my tuition would be payed out of an education fund set up by a private company. A relative recommended me for it. It definetely takes some of the stress off.
 
This is mostly for current students,
Do medical equipment vendors come to school before classes or are we expected to just go out and get the stuff we'll need?
On that note, does the school send out a list of required equipement?

I am not a current student however as I understand it all will be supplied to you at the school/base. Like most things military, you are issued your needed items.

You'll get books during orientation before your MSI year (and then again each year after). You'll get your "doctor bag" (minus a bag to carry it all in) in the second semester of MSI which is when you start learning the physical exam.
 
Hey Everybody, I've been lurking on here for a while and thought I'd finally post. I interviewed back on October 21st, was put on hold at the end of December, updated to waitlist toward the end of February and received a conditional acceptance to Army today. My stats are 3.64/3.57, 29, no research, but quite a bit of clinical experience. I wish all those still waiting the best of luck and thought it might be encouraging that the waitlist is already seeing some movement! Have a great weekend!
 
Congrats on the acceptance!

All I have to say about being accepted from the waitlist is... DUH! WINNING!
