Really struggling with this autobiography. How interesting do we have to make it. What if you didn't know you wanted to be a doctor until college. Any suggestions?

I was in a similar situation, except I didn't know I wanted to be a doctor until after college. I just made some funny anecdotes to give them an idea of what kind of person I was and to let them know what my life was like. The essay I think says to stop prior to college, but I wanted to touch briefly on my motivations since they happened after college, so I think to some extent that's okay. Just be honest and let them know what kind of person you are and you'll be fine!

^ I have all the southern UCs but not UCSF. Funny how things work like this -____-

Sigh, I got UCI, UC Davis, and UCSD right away and am waiting on UCLA/UCSF. Starting to run out of hope for them. Seems funny that some of the SDN'ers, particularly those with great numbers, wouldn't get at least a secondary from these places.

I've been verified since august and got my MCAT score back 8/31.

I'm already complete at UCSF, UCD, USC, Loma, Stanford. But I'm still waiting on all the southern california UC's. No Secondary Yet 🙁

I got UCI, UC Davis, and UCSF fairly soon after my primary was verified (7/21) and automatically got invites (got the initial "We've received your AMCAS" email and then immediately received a secondary invite). But still waiting for UCLA and UCSD, which I'm starting to losing hope for 🙁.

Stats: 3.99cGPA / 4.0sGPA / 28M (9-9-10) / CA resident

Obviously my MCAT makes these schools longshots, but I'm still surprised I got automatic invites from UCSF, UCI, and UC Davis, and haven't heard anything from UCSD or UCLA. I really don't get this process...

Cramster and rafflecopter, you both have amazing stats!!! Surely you'll get invites for secondaries from all the UCs! To all three of you (Cramster, rafflecopter, and karayraisu), are you OOS or IS?

I am instate. Well good luck to everyone else.

Wow, well if you don't get a secondary invite, then I don't have much of a chance. Does anybody have any insight as to how UCSD screens? Do they purely screen just based on numbers for the secondaries? Or do they consider other things too?

I'm starting to wonder how all the UCs screen, seems to be pretty random actually who gets a secondary at what UC. I am an instate applicant, by the way, although word on the street is several of the UCs (at least for undergraduates) are planning on taking more out of staters to get more cash, not sure if it applies to us med school applicants or not. I hope not, its hard enough as it is on us Cali applicants 🙁

Even though things do seem random, it sure seemed that way when I applied to med school. Just remember this, UCSD, like most good CA med schools, had like 5-6 thousand applications for 120-130 spots....

So 1, it takes a long time to go through all that, and 2, they are gonna have to make difficult decisions. But know that they do read your applications carefully and thoroughly, and they do read that autobiographical essay. And if they interview you, they will know you, my guy def did his homework on me, which i thought was pretty cool cause they do care.

I am OOS, applying to SD, SF, and LA. I got SD and LA like 2-3 days after AMCAS receipt, I am still now waiting for SF (for 8 weeks already!) - so I'm not exactly sure how they screen for these things. My basic breakdown is 36/3.7/strong EC+clinical/ok research, so I think I am competitive, but I really don't know which one of my traits are actually "desirable" to which particular school.

Is anyone doing the student clinic tour and dinner? Does anyone know what the attire is? Business casual? Interview attire?

Is anyone brave enough to call and ask?🙂

It states on the website where you sign up for a tour date to dress casually.

Hmm, anyone staying with student hosts? I was considering it but I thought that since my interview was so soon after the semester started that they wouldnt be ready to host us, so I booked a hotel nearby. Got the student host email the next day (d'oh)!

Is anyone on here interviewing with me next week? Would be funny to see a fellow SDN'er

Hi guys,

Congrats to those of you coming to interview so early! I didn't interview here until April, so I thought it was a long shot. I hope the school is everything you dream it will be. I definitely do not regret my decision to come here. We just finished up our first week of the new curriculum. It is challenging, but I love it so far! We are really thrown into the deep end with lots of clinical issues, and they treat us like junior colleagues. You have a lot to look forward to if you come here 🙂

Please let me know if I can answer any questions for you about the interview process or the school in general. I hope you'll take advantage of the clinic tour the night before! That was my favorite part of the whole interview experience, and it ended up being an integral part of why I decided to come here. Also, take some time to talk to first years. When we interviewed, no one knew what to expect in terms on the new curriculum, but we now have some personal insight for you. Don't be afraid to ask questions! UCSD is a very supportive academic community.

Anyway, I hope you love my school as much as I do :luck: Welcome and best of luck!

Anyone knows if the UCs accept FAP waiver at all? if they do, how does it work? do we just send in a copy of the FAP acceptance?

I am finding it really hard to pay for all the secondaries 🙁

Yes, all the UCs accept FAP. Some of them waive the secondary app fee automatically when they receive your AMCAS while others require you to send the FAP Approval e-mail/form. For UCSD, you are supposed to send a FAP copy once you get the secondary (They are awesome and let you e-mail it). They say so in the secondary invite e-mail. 👍

Don't let the secondary payments stress you out! Almost all schools accept FAP, you just have to check if you have to send a copy of the approval. GL! 🙂

Has anyone submitted the secondary after the month deadline? I didn't read that part til today, and I'm at 6 weeks already ... are my chances shot? I plan on calling them tomorrow to explain that I was traveling abroad with spotty internet/computer usage, but has anyone succeeded in getting an extension before?

Does anyone have an answer to this question? Im about 3 days late, and I too was abroad and didnt have internet. Im freaking out here, as Im really interested in UCSD. Any advice is appreciated!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like your goose is cooked jas :lame: I guess it cant hurt to submit anyway (more than the time invested and $$$), but I'd think with all their applicants they likely won't take a second look at late apps.

I called one day after I missed my deadline, and they were very accommodating (surprisingly so, I thought). They asked me how quickly I could get it in, and then they gave me 2 days. I would call and explain your situation....no promises, but my guess is that they will extend it for you as well.

🙂 Thanks for the kind words. There may be hope!

There usually is...more often than not, we worry more than we need to. Even in one week of medical school, I have learned that much! 😉

I have been verified since 7/6 but they got my scores around 8/17 and havent heard anything from them, should I email them? or wait?.. whats the average wait time to receive any notifications/the secondary

I was amcas verified on 8/18, got the secondary on 9/1. I got the sec and another e-mail saying that they received my primary at the same time.

I got an email from them 8/5 saying that they had received my primary and haven't heard from them since. It's strange because I got all the other secondaries for the UCs...UCSD says that it can take up to 8 weeks to send you a secondary. I wouldn't worry just yet, although I doubt my situation is super typical.

Yea its taking a long time, especially that I got my UCLA secondary a week after my scores came out. But hopefuly we will hear something good soon

Hey guys,
I took 2 quarters of gchem without lab and 2 quarters of ochem without lab.
This year I am taking one semester of gchem with lab and one semester of ochem with lab at a community college. I am trying to find out if by the time I finish these, will I meet the chem requirement at UCSD? I emailed admissions but they basically copied and pasted their requirements from their website.

Yeah, you should be fine but note that most medical schools in general don't like it when you take requirements at a community college if you are attending a university normally. It's better to take those classes at the same college that you took your previous classes.

i think a snow flake has a better chance of landing in la jolla that i do, esp with my horrifyingly slow secondary turnaround time...

but i just changed my desktop to a photo of my aunt and i kayaking in the sea caves to remind me of how much i 😍 it there (esp as summer is turning into fall ...which will soon turn into the especially brutal winter being forecasted).

I got UCSD pretty quickly, rejected from Davis and have heard nothing from the rest. I have about mean stats. 😕

Funny how things work. I feel like this system starting to get more and more like a lottery drawing.

Very interesting. I got UCD, UCSF, UCLA, and UCI very quickly. But UCSD took a while to send me the secondary. Almost the opposite.

anyone with an MSAR know how many they interview/accept and what date acceptances start getting sent out?

What is "acceptance notification?"

Interview invite today, AMCAS: verified day 1, secondary received on august 8th, IS 35 3.7 re-applicant in case you were curious.

Interview invite today as well! Complete 9/1 OOS.

I interviewed here this week and admissions told me that this year they would not start giving admissions decisions until mid November... so we gotta wait folks.

Congrats! Do you mean you received the secondary on august 8th, or UCSD received your secondary on the 8th?

Has anyone received a Hold message for an interview? My app was complete 8/17 and haven't heard anything.

i think ucsd's been leaving everyone out in the dark. i called the admissions coordinator and he told me that he was going to send everyone e-mails on their statuses either this week or next week. they're doing something different this year where people will be put into a couple different 'on hold' piles. one is more likely to get interviews, the other is less likely. i think you'll know which pile you're in when the e-mail is sent out because they will be worded differently depending on which pile youre in.

Thanks for the response. This process has no rhyme or reason. I called UCI and they said they hadn't even reviewed my app and i was complete 8/5.

I thought I was going crazy. I've been complete at UCSD since 7/27 but I haven't heard anything. I had thought it was a silent rejection. It would be so awesome to get an interview here.

i was complete 7/27 and just got my interview invite yesterday.. its not over until they say it is!

I got it on the 8th. Thought about not doing it since they screened me out pre-secondary last year. Went backpacking and decided to go for it and submitted around the 13th or so.
