got an interview invite today for next week. I'm so excited. I'm assuming it's for a waitlist spot, but it's still better than nothing 🙂

Congrats! That is awesome news 🙂 I was getting worried they weren't even sending out invites anymore.

Don't worry too much if you find out it's just for a waitlist spot. From what I hear, there's still some movement on UC's waitlist after interviews, so keep your hopes up and good luck!

Good luck all- I was a March 15th interview last year (for waitlist only) and here I am at UC 🙂

Don't forget to check out what I wrote a few weeks/months ago about the Metro rate- you can get essentially in-state prices all 4 years!

I was put on the waitlist last week. Does anyone know when they tell you what your position is on the list?

Like just about any other medical school, they do not disclose what position you are on the waitlist, and I don't believe they disclose that information even if you do call and ask. You will find out which third of the alternate list, though, if you are still on the waitlist by then.

Cincy doesn't do hard rankings for the waitlist, they put you into thirds and then pull people off the waitlist to make their final class demographics look the way they want them to look. at least that's the way they did it last year, I'm assuming it's the same process this year.

Ah. Right. There is no ranked waitlist (at least officially???). AFIAK, they review applications again at later dates for acceptances, and after May 15, they make the alternate list where the finally put everyone into thirds.

My bad.

I just got an interview for the 15th! This is my first time in Cincinnati. Are there any neighborhoods or places that are good to visit to get a sense of the city?
also, advice on the MMIs??

Congratulations on the interview invite!

For the MMI's, it's really hard to prepare for them but the best piece of advice I can give is if you feel like you did bad in one of them shake that feeling ASAP before going into the next room. The interviewers from room to room have no clue how you did before you step into that room so it's like you have a clean slate every time you walk into a room. Also, since none of them have any information on you don't say things from your app that you would expect them to know without offering an explanation behind that statement. Most of all have fun during your interviews!

Be yourself. They aren't looking for the right answer, they're looking for thought and good communication skills. I had a lot of fun with mine, I like them better than traditional interviews because I feel like it gives a more accurate picture of the things that matter. Just relax and focus on having a good discussion about the scenarios.

Clifton is nearby the med school and has a good mix of restaurants and shops you could stop at; you could also try Mt. Adams or Hyde Park (the squares/business districts). Downtown isn't far either (10ish minutes) and has anything you'd expect a moderately-sized city's downtown to have. Northside and Mt Auburn aren't as traditionally "nice" but they're pretty cool neighborhoods.

I got the invite too, but not to sure if I'll be able to go because it's pretty costly for me to get there from Wisconsin (have to rent a car or fly). I'm wondering how people handle finding apartments if they can't really make it to town? I'm thinking I'd most likely just want to live at one of those nice places across the street, and find a roomie.

Hey PBMC, if you still decided not to go to second look, which is understandable since youre kind of far, they are going to stream it live online. So I guess that kind of counts no? Maybe? Hopefully you can make it. Also, there is a facebook group up already, I'd join that too for helpful info on Cincy.

Any idea what the itinerary is for second look?

c4e, on the email we got it didn't really give any details on what's going to happen. They said that when it gets closer to the event, a secondary email will include more details.

If I may ask, where do you live? and how did you go about finding a place? Thanks, in advance...

Placed on the alternate list today. Interviewed just over a week ago, 3/7. Being so late in the cycle, I was really only interviewing for a waitlist spot anyway, so I am content. Best of luck to to rest of you.

By the way, at UC there is no distinction between the "alternate list" and the "waitlist," correct? Are the terms used interchangeably, with "alternate list" used for their formal correspondence? I believe this is the case, but if I'm wrong I would appreciate a heads up. Thanks.

Yes, alternate list = waitlist. They're the same thing.

First, good luck to all who's accepted/waiting/interviewing, etc!

I have a quick question to those who are already students at UC and/or know people who go there. How is the neighborhood (Clifton) at night? I will be there this summer, and I won't have a car to get back to my apartment, which is about a mile down from UC (it's like right below the University of Cincinnati - not the med school campus but just the regular one). Thank you - sorry if this isn't appropriate but didn't know other better place to post.

if you are planning on living just south of main campus, just don't. You don't want to be walking south of main campus at night. If you want to be within walking distance of med campus you need to live very close or in the ludlow area, or you're asking for trouble. the south side of main campus isn't a great area at all.

I attended UC for undergrad and found West/NorthWest of the medical campus in the gaslight district is probably the nicest part of Clifton. I lived in the University Heights area on the South side of main campus for two years and never had any issues. UC does have an evening shuttle that goes around most of Clifton/Corryville although I'm not sure if it runs during the summer. Also, a cheap garage sale bike with a good bike lock may be a good investment.

If your worried about safety, but want to be within walking distance the gaslight district or about half a mile south of the med campus are your best bets.

I live in Stetson, along with a whole bunch of students. It's a relatively popular selection for med students here. Unfortunately, rent is pretty steep, and you're paying for how close you are to the school. I took a day out of my schedule to drive down here from Cleveland to look at options. Unfortunately, because of how prone I am to allergies, Stetson was the best choice I could go with without experimenting with the other places I looked at.

In general, about a month or two before orientation begins, people (including the first years) will start to send e-mails out looking for roommates to fill up houses. You can also announce that you're looking for a roommate, if you want to go that route. There should also be a form that will be available to help people find roommates, but the number of people who filled out that form wasn't very many my year. The Facebook page may also have some housing opportunities.

The walk will probably take you about 20 minutes or so. A bike would be a better and faster option. The terrrain is a bit hilly, so make sure your brakes are in good working order. However, I wouldn't venture out too late at night, as more southern parts of campus are prone to less than favorable incidents. Stick to the major roads.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a nerd about urban areas, so I wanted to clarify. Apologies for wordiness =)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3c/All-Neighborhoods-Cincinnati.jpg

UC main campus is in the neighborhood "the heights." The med campus is just a little bit to the northeast - I think its technically in corryville/avondale.

CUF = clifton heights, university heights & fairview. Clifton proper is the neighborhood centered around Ludlow Avenue, and is a pretty nice area, a good amount of med students live there and I believe it should be pretty safe. Clifton heights, as part of CUF, might be a bit less so. Mt Auburn and Corryville are pretty much the same as CUF, although Mt. Auburn is fairly UC-student-dense.

A good general rule of thumb anywhere around campus is to walking avoid far at night, especially alone (driving is really no big deal). If you're going to have to walk to class, though, I would suggest either living directly south of the med campus (so in Stetson or extremely close) or in Clifton proper (around ludlow). Stetson should be fine because its so close, and Clifton proper should be more-or-less safe to walk in.

I live in East walnut Hills (~8 min drive). Some people live in Hyde Park/Mt. Lookout/Oakley/Mt. Adams (~15 min drive) - these are the "nicer" areas. I know of some people that live in Mt. Auburn/OTR - be smart and you'll be safe. Northside is also an option, places can be much cheaper there.

Also, I found my place on craigslist. Apartments usually go up for rent in June, but I got mine in early May. Some places allow pre-leasing, some don't.

Any more questions, feel free to ask and somebody will respond =)

Thank you all. Sorry I didn't see until now. I did more searching and looks like I'm stuck where I am. I looked into Stetson but the cost is too high, and it seems like it's not as good as what it appears to be (I read some reviews of Stetson Square). The close distance is appealing, but I feel like negatives outweigh positives so looks like I might need to consider bike? Eh, who knows.

I just declined my acceptance. Good luck everyone!

Anyone else freaking out about getting financial information in to the fin. aid office?!? I waited waayyyyy too long to get started on this stuff, damn. My taxes won't be finished til monday, either. 😱

How do we complete the Stafford promissory note??? Anyone know?

It's quiet....too quiet. 😏

Does anyone know what rough percentage of applicants are accepted off of the alternate list each year?

Funny, i was thinking the same... where're all the cincy people??
Don't know about the alternate-acceptance rate, but i'm an alternate and man is waiting hardd..

Haha yeah I couldn't agree with you more. Good luck to you and everyone else on the alternate list.

Just got the email stating I was put in the top third of the waitlist. Anyone know how likely that is to turn into an acceptance for someone OOS?

very difficult to say. Cincy does their waitlist a little different. you're not ranked beyond the thirds, you're a set of demographics. after may 15, if bringing you in would most help them bring the overall class demographics closer to where they would like them to be, you're set. if they've already got a lot of what you have to offer in terms of demographics, you might be in trouble. so you should be hoping that they have a lot of OOS people decide to go elsewhere, although if I remember right there were ~10 different categories they look at.

Thanks for the info. I've heard some schools do it that way now that you mention it. Oh well, hopefully a non-trad white male engineer from NY withdraws 😛.

I'm in the middle third, IS. Are there any stats on entrance rates from the wait list?

Also, anyone who is going to reject their acceptance is going to do it by May 15th right?

Unless they get accepted off a waitlist after May 15th and decide to go there, so movement can really be at any time, although the bulk will probably be late May/June. Good luck!

Middle third, OOS, but went to college in Cincy. This is kind of how I feel:

No idea how many people are in a third of the WL. I'm probably in the group that'll move the least: white, male, IS. I definitely want to go here. Good luck all.

Dang. Got my ranking email today - bottom third, OOS. My prospects here look grim. ..But cinci, I love you! =[

Middle Third OOS White Male Non Science Major under grad but have a MS in Physiology.

Does anyone know anything more about this process?

I get that they draw from the tiers to get the demographics they want. But which takes higher precedent. Will they take say an out of state person from the second tier over a first tier person who is instate if they happen to be looking for out of state people? Or do all the first tier people have to be out of the way before they'll look at any of us middle tier people?

Thanks

Does anybody know what the new curriculum looks like? All four years of it.

They had a nice presentation at second look that explained it well with a week by week layout. From what I remember, it will be something like this":

First two years will be systems based(4-8 weeks per system) with exams at the end of each system that cover all the traditional classes (anat, physio, path, histo, etc.). Last two years are the normal clerkships with a few intersessions that will cover skills relevant to the group of clerkships that you are on(the clerkships are grouped into 3 different categories).

So I was recently placed in the middle third of the alternate list at Cinci and was wondering if I should go ahead and put in an application for an apartment or not?

Thanks in advance.

So do you know if that is normal and pathophysiology at the simultaneously?

That's how I understood it. They will not do normal first year and pathophysiology second year. Instead it will be each system once in its entirety. If you are wait listed or accepted, there should be video's on medonestop from this years second look day.

I just called them today. You send an email to the admissions office with your AAMC ID and intent to withdraw.

Just sent my withdrawal in today. Good luck to those of you on the waitlist!

Hey, everyone.

Sorry about being MIA, especially from the 2nd year aspect, as we just finished our last block of exams a few days ago, and I'm still in a bit of a haze.

Anyway, for those who are wondering about alternate list movement, obviously, the top 1/3 have the best chance of getting in, but the other 1/3rds are not as likely. Bottom third, well... one can hope, right?

The year I was put on the alternate list, there were only 2 or 3 people who were moved off the list. But other years, there could be a lot more. It's really a "that kind of year" thing and a waiting game for admissions, but I wouldn't put your life on hold. If you haven't been accepted anywhere yet, plan for things this between this cycle and the next cycle to improve your application, so you're not left scrambling in August if things don't work out your way. And if you get accepted later on, well, drop those plans, kick back, and relax!

Anyway, Step 1 will be an ongoing motif for the next 40 days, so my presence will once again be sparse, but I'll make my best effort to drop by once in a while.

Good luck, folks. Hope things go your way, and congratulations to those who've gotten in somewhere.
