Just got done with the info session, and though I would appreciate specific feedback more, I found it very helpful and definitely recommend it to any wait-listers or denied applicants.

Current Stats
217 acceptances out so far
91 IS, 126 OOS

33% increase in submitted secondaries in 2010-2011 versus the previous cycle

75th% interviewed/accepted had 3.92 GPA, 36 MCAT
Median had 3.81, 34 (33 for accepted)
25th% had 3.64, 31

65% of the current CU accepted pool is holding multiple acceptance offers

170-180 are currently on the waitlist

Dimple didn't say outright, but insinuated that no one had been taken off the waitlist yet. Willa said something like, "It's moving really slow right now, and May 15th or the week after we will be ready to start making offers"

Wait listers,
You had great interviews, experience, letters of rec, etc. The accepted people were just better. Work more on new experiences and buffing everything--and do what you are excited about!

Denied candidates,
It sounded like the decision to deny was made more because of the interview than anything else. That would be a good thing to work on for next year, if you are reapplying.

Hope that helps. Good luck everyone :-D

Thank you for going and posting this for the rest of us wait-listers. That was really nice of you.

CU does appear to like a good story. The median MCAT is higher for those interviewed than those accepted and they emphasize experience/excitement. I don't know how having new experiences now figures in, since they don't take updates from wait-listers. It is rough to hear the reason for getting wait listed is being too boring of a person. 🙁

CU accepts a lot of OOS people straight up for a school that is the only MD school in the state. I wish they had given a bit more initial IS love.

Still hoping for IS love in the future though I still never know what to expect from CU.

I doubt it's because you're boring.🙂 We're all wait listed for a variety of reasons, and they presented a lot of information on the touchy-feely, subjective aspects of the admissions process.

After attending the session I had a sense of just how much we overemphasize gpa/mcat on SDN. My sense from Willa and Dimple is that if you're in the range then you're in the range and it's everything else that matters then. They listed a number of qualitative parameters that they evaluate applicants on during the interviews and subsequent reviews:

Does this person match the person presented in the application?

Knowledge of Profession

Maturity

Professionalism

Intellectual Capacity

Communication Skills

Willingness to learn

Ability to work with and learn from people who are different from them

I would strongly suggest that anyone who is waitlisted register and attend one of these sessions. Although they don't give personalized feedback anymore, they went through the interviewers assessments and presented slides with selected statements about the applicants' strengths and weaknesses. If you can honestly self assess your application, experience, and interview ability, you can figure out what statements apply to you fairly well. From that, you can figure out your strengths and weaknesses in the case that you reapply next year.

Thanks Threadstalker for reassuring me I'm not too boring. 🙂

This is one hell of a process, it is nice that they have an info session to guide people in the future.

No doubt, my friend. This whole thing has been much more stressful than I had anticipated. Particularly now that it's been stretched out even longer for many of us. As always, best of luck to everyone, as long as you don't take MY spot!

Any idea if they use gpa/mcat or experiences more when pulling from the wait list?

My impression was that once you made the gpa/mcat cut, then you made the cut. Everyone on the wait list has sufficient scores, and they said that they reviewed the whole application while making their decisions, so I would guess that the scores don't mean much at this point.

Thanks for the info!

Does it seem odd to anyone else that a state school has 58% of its offers outstanding to people from other states?

Wow that is an interesting statistic!

My opinion is that a much higher percentage of IS students will hold on to their acceptance than OOS. Also, with the state budget crisis secondary education funding has been hit pretty hard and the high OOS tuition rate helps the state a bit I am sure. As a Colorado resident it can be very frustrating, it makes getting into medical school that much harder as a Colorado resident.

The Colorado resident medical school applicant... another victim of careless government spending.

Dunno if it's the case for many, but some people may be from (or have significant spent time in) Colorado and want to go back.

I think you will find a substantial number of the OOS accepted students are from California. I think from the standpoint of the state, Colorado is an attractive state to settle down, so they get OOS students with the hope they will settle and practice in Colorado.

And why wouldn't they? Colorado is awesome... but for someone like me, I'd probably settle in CO regardless of where I got my MD. So maybe I should give up my spot.

Lol! As a California kid myself, I think it's more likely that it's hard for us to get accepted in our own state because there are too many of us. Then Colorado looks attractive. My friends and I, at least, don't want to leave California permanently.

But Colorado is definitely a great state, and I personally would love to live there for a few years. Take me off the waitlist!!! 😛

they changed their policy about giving out personally tailored advice for students who interviewed but did not get accepted.

Yup. I too attended the first info session, primarily to get a personal "what I need to do" to make me a competitive candidate list. So disappointed.

Has anyone already accepted heard back about CU UNITE? I just got an e-mail saying I was accepted to the track....I'm just curious if any else has gotten word about this yet. I'm pretty pumped about this program, so yay for CU UNITE! 🙂

A few thoughts on this...

1. It's much more difficult for OOSers to get an interview at Colorado in the first place, as compared to ISers. Using last year's stats, only 700 of the ~4000 secondary applications were completed by ISers... and 350 of them (1/2) got interviews. The rest (~3300) were completed by OOSers... and 320 of them (1/10) got interviews.

2. Once it comes to interviews/acceptances, they over-accept OOSers by a large margin because they know that the majority will not choose to pay out-of-state tuition if given the choice, even if they love Colorado.

3. When it comes to who's actually in the class... only about 25% of the matriculating class is actually comprised of OOSers, at least according to the makeup of the current med student population at Colorado. That may turn out differently this year; who knows.

While some of this is true, currently--with a class of 160--this year there would be a maximum of 91/160=57% in state students if all accepted IS students were to matriculate. Sure seems weird, considering it usually is around 75%?

At the info session someone asked what they expected their IS/OSS ratio to be for the final class and they said somewhere between 65/35 to 70/30. So they must be planning on offering more acceptance to the ISers on the waitlist. Hope this helps.

Argh, hoping we hear back about financial aid soon!

I'm getting nervous, only 11 days until May 15th. Anyone think offers will be offered on the 15th to the alternate list? Anyone know how it worked in previous years?

Great question Colorado01. I would be very interested to hear about how the wait list progressed in previous years.

I would expect it to take a few days after May 15 for the other offers to start going out. It's been a few weeks since the info session, so my memory is a little faded, but I have the impression that most offers to wait-listed students will be made roughly 1-3 weeks after that date.

Thanks hja and threadstalker. The anticipation is killing me, I wish the three tier system was still around so I had a better idea about my chances. :xf:

Has anyone on the waitlist sent a letter expressing interest or an update letter (recent grades, accomplishments, etc.)?

If so, who/where did you send it to?

Someone earlier in the thread said CU isn't accepting updates. I called and asked just to double check, and Ashley Ehlers confirmed it. 🙁

Did any other wait-listed people receive a financial aid package? I can't tell if this is a tease or an acceptance.

It was a tease! I called admissions and financial aid and they admitted that they shouldn't have processed my package yet, but somehow I slipped through the cracks (as an alum I'm already in their system, and since I'd submitted my fafsa they prematurely jumped all over it). According to admissions, that's not supposed to happen.

Last time I heard that happening it was for the PA school at CU and the guy got an acceptance a few days later (he called too and they said they couldn't tell him anything). Not trying to raise your hopes too much, but that may not be a simple coincidence. Good luck 🙂

Could be foreshadowing.... Right now I'm wishing I got that email.

Just withdrew my acceptance...good luck to everyone on the wait list!:luck:

I'm coming home! (cue Diddy-Dirty Money song)

GO BUFFS

Has anyone heard any new info??? This waiting is driving me crazy!

:xf:

Have heard absolutely nothing...I know, it's making me bonkers too! 😱

I heard a rumor the admissions committee started meeting this week again to review more applicants

Has anyone been accepted off the waitlist or know of someone who has? It looks like last year they had multiple acceptance by this time..

I have been waiting soooooo long for this! 😀

Accepted off of waitlist! Email at 1:20 pm MT time zone.

Good luck everyone else!

Accepted 13:21 MST, will go for sure, see you all in the fall. Goodluck to all others on the list. :luck:

👍 Accepted too!! It seems like a huge wave of acceptance off of the wait-list. Goodluck!!
