so how is it that they decide who gets to go to second look or not?

I really don't know, last year I remember them talking about diversity. Exactly who gets an invitation is beyond me, though.

If I remember correctly, they invite people that are holding acceptances to other competitive schools and that would "fit" well with the school. It was a while ago though so I'm not sure how accurate that is.

My girlfriend is an M1 and she is on the revisit weekend planning committee. She said her year it was the first ones who sign up get to come, space is obviously limited. They are trying to allow everyone to attend this year, but she's thinking it is going to be first come first serve again.

This. Now I remember what I was reading.👍

Twitter: "Second Look Weekend will be open to all admitted students but some events/activities are space limited. Want to accommodate all we can!"

Also, they say they are discussing Jan 14 interviewers today, but on Jan 14 they said they would let us know our decision Feb 4th or after. Is this a mistaken date? Is this date only for non-admitted interviewees?

Nice, thanks for pointing that out.

i just got the acceptance email (!!!!!) a few minutes ago so the date isn't wrong

How would they know before May 15th who is holding acceptances where? I was under the impression that it is another recruiting day for the most competitive applicants, particularly from out of state... although I may be wrong.

I think it's that schools can see where else you're accepted after they accept you, or every school can see your acceptances after March 15th. Not 100% though.

I don't think that every school can see your acceptances after March 15th (that wouldn't be fair to the applicants even that late in the game), however, I do know that once a school has accepted you, they can see all the other acceptances you have been offered.

Interviewed 1/14, accepted today (1/19). Crazy fast turn around-- they told us to expect news on Feb4!

Pretty sure I'll end up choosing Michigan 🙂

OMG pressing F5 all day...

For 1/14 interviewees...will be also hear through tomorrow too if we got accepted? I didn't realize they would post acceptances so soon after the AEC meeting

They only update via email for the first few days. Your status page won't change for another 1-3 more days if memory serves.

Interviewed 1/14. I got my acceptance yesterday, I was sooo surprised!😱 super fast! 😀

anyone know anything about the biochem requirement? i graduated already and would like to take an online course (thinking berkeley) but not sure if that would be allowed

Hey guys... any idea how many people are deferred to February decision?

Any idea how many people are likely to get admitted in February from defer status?

blah for getting deferred... 🙄

You should call the admissions office and ask for their input.

I'm in the same boat. According to MSAR, they do accept online course credit. During my interview, I mentioned to my interviewer that I was planning to take biochem online this spring, and he seemed to think this was fine...

I wouldn't trust the interviews to know any sort of meaningful knowledge about admissions requirements.

I had a different question about course requirements, emailed admissions and they got back to me super quick, so try that. I love how responsive they are.

Your application Status as of 01/31/2011
FILE CLOSED
After careful review, it is with regret that we inform you we are unable to offer you a position in the University of Michigan Medical School's next entering class. Given the depth and strength of our applicant pool, we continue to have far more qualified applicants than seats available.

We appreciate your interest in our medical school and wish you success and satisfaction in your future endeavors.

...And scene. I wonder who that ONE remaining interview invite is going to. They must be AWESOME.

Ok so does anyone know the inside scoop on what this blizzard may do to the meeting the admissions team is supposed to have tomorrow??:slap:

I appreciated Michigan's approach to admissions up to this point, but the way they're dealing with the last few interview slots seems a little ridiculous.

What do you mean by that? It does seem like a lot of manpower for one little interview spot.

I didn't apply to UMich, but I loved this tweet:
Been in admission 20 years and don't know what the hell people are talking about: letter of interest vs. intent??? We don't want either...

I totally agree. I've loved how transparent they've been, their communication, responsiveness on Twitter, the admissions tracker, all awesome. But dragging out the last 10 interviews...down to 5... down to 2... down to 1... while still holding open everyone's file has just been SO tedious.

I can definitely see where you are coming from on the last few interview spots...But I still think that the way they do things has been overwhelmingly positive on the whole.

I don't know if this applies to the meeting, but the last time class was canceled at UMich for a snow day was in the 1970's...

Snowpocalypse is currently happening outside, all the other universities (including UM Flint and Dearborn) and school districts in the region have called snow days, but we in AA still have our regularly scheduled classes and exams tomorrow. 😛 'That's the Michigan difference.'

anyone knwo when deferred applicants hear back?

deferred applicants are supposed to hear back on February 25.

anyone know how many deferred applicants there are? how many acceptances they are planning to take from the deferred pool?

For people on the waitlist, do your pages say:

"You are being offered a place on the wait list. Applicants are placed on the wait list after they interview, and may be offered a spot in the class at any time. Waitlisted applicants may check this status page after May 1 for more information about their relative position on the wait list and the size of the list this year."

What does "may be offered a spot in the class at any time" really mean?

Also, I have seemed to hear that different waitlist applicants have different 'statuses'...mine says simply 'Wait List'. Does anyone have anything different?

Congrats to accepted applicants today!

Someone on this forum was accepted off the the waitlist already, if I remember correctly. I don't have enough time to search right now, I think his name was 'elarkin.'

It also looks like they gave the last interview invite. The person must have been a Michigan resident given that the last interview day is tomorrow.

I had that exact same message as you. Since they moved me to deferred before I was accepted, I would assume that it "offered a spot at any point in time" means after May 15. Not sure though. Good luck!

Accepted today. Glad the 2 week wait is over. And happy to not have to wait til tomorrow at 5pm ET as originally planned.

I was waitlisted and my status says the same thing. To be honest, they have a group of interviewees for today and they have deferred applicants--I don't think those waitlisted will hear back until mid-May at the earliest (especially since they only have 3% of acceptances left to go).

Anyways, Congrats to all those Accepted!

Hey guys,

I got the following message yesterday:

Highly Desirable - February decision
Your application has been deferred to a committee decision and no action will be taken on your file until February. This is a "no action" decision and further review of your file will take place again in February. This decision is not an offer of admission, waitlist, or rejection.

Did other deferred students get the same message? Does everyone's status say highly desirable?

Thanks for the help, and congrats to all admitted students!

You and me both. I believe that everyone who is deferred gets the "highly desirable" message, but I could be wrong. Good luck!
