Hey guys

I learned about this site about one week ago and have found it very informative. Unfortunately, the discovery came after my first interview. I am headed to the Memphis campus on Feb 23 for the second interview and guided tour. I have been out of school for over a year and graduated with a degree in Business Management. I am now the research coordinator @ a Kidney Center here in Knoxville. I sent my application in before I started working and feel like my letters of recommendation that were sent in are a little outdated. Does anyone know if i can send in supplemental letters from the doctors I am now working for? Has anyone done this? Also, has anyone had an interview with Dr. Latta or know someone who has? I was just wanting to see what I could expect. Thanks in advance

I'd say go ahead and send in your updated letters and/or take them with you to the interview. Good luck!

What was the difference?

Anything besides the tuition that differed between the schools? Positive, negative, or neutral.

Quillen Tuition and Fees (in-state)
M1,2 & 4 - 28k
M3 - 37k

It's really the 3rd year that's killer.

University of Tennessee Tuition and Fees (in-state)

This is what I'm using...I don't remember if/where the cost material was in my interview stuff: http://www.uthsc.edu/finance/bursar/colleges_fee_information.php

25k/year

Other than tuition differences though...

Both schools have advantages. What do you want to do? Practice rural primary care? Do bench lab research? Cure poverty? Invent new starship drive systems? It all depends.

I haven't made the decision myself.

Interviewed Feb. 2. Received my No Decision letter today in the mail. Not what I was hoping for after checking the mail like a maniac every day! Does anyone know how long it usually takes for them to put you into another category after the No Decision letter? Ahh more waiting. Fingers crossed. Still on hold at Quillen too.

Most likely you won't know anything until May. I believe that is when the waitlist begins. I was told by a UT student that usually ~40% of the class is accepted off the waitlist, so stay positive! I got the no decision letter back in November.

The letter said they will let us know by April 22. Is No Decision better than being waitlisted? That's what I've gathered from what I've read. Anything we can do in the meantime to improve our chances?

The waitlist doesn't actually start until April 22. If my understanding is correct, nearly everyone who received the no decision letter will be put on the waitlist.

I'd say one clear way to improve your chances is to send them a letter updating them on any achievements that you've accomplished since you interviewed. Good luck, don't stress out too much.

It's my understanding that there isn't a waitlist yet. I was told that after interviews were completed they would go through the no decisions and either accept, reject, or waitlist. Has anyone gotten a true waitlist letter?

Has anyone heard any news (good or not so good) recently?

Hello there! I interviewed at UTHSC on 2/8 - no news yet. Just patiently waiting and lookinng at the glass half-full 🙂

Hi all,
I got my interview invite today, and it's set for this coming Tuesday! I'm interviewing with Dr. Jerry Heston and Dr. Parker Suttle. If any of you ahve had any experience with either of these, any advice would be welcomed. Thanks!

Congrats on your Interview invite - had mine in 2/8 and waiting for feedback. As far as the interviewers, its been MY personal experience that questions/discussions are personalized to you as the Candidate. General questions like why Med? why UT etc are expected but beyond that you are unique than all the applicants this cycle so study your AMCAS, know yourself, and your experiences. You are more qualified to sale yourself than anybody else. Think of some wee ethical qsns too - refere to the "interview feedbaack section" for UTHSC.

All the best and know that the glass must never be half-empty 🙂

I interviewed with Dr. Suttle. He's a nice dude...don't get too nervous. He likes random pharmacology facts too.

I guess UT gave him a piece of paper with questions, then he wrote down answers as I talked...I thought that was a departure from other interviews, but it gives you more time to think.

I will second this, my interview was very personalized to myself. Most the questions were in the realm of me expanding on my personal statement/extracurriculars listed on my AMCAS.

Invited for an interview for March 14. Super excited! Interviewing with Dr. Gallant and Dr. Watsky. Anyone interviewed with them/know them/etcs..or advice? Thanks. Can't wait for the interview!!

I am quoting what I told someone else and do believe this will help you. Plus give your best shot as offers are still being given - just heard from them today.....

Has anyone heard anything yet about the scholarship weekend? The website says information will be sent out in late February so I was just wondering if anyone had gotten anything.

Guys just curious since I am yet to see a contingent admission during the real cycle. So I got mail from UT today and its a conditional acceptance pending completion of their TIP program (google utmem.edu/tip ). Anybody under this category? Obviously its better than a R or Hold/no decision but didn't even know such a thing exist!!!

Also UT is my home school and would be a great fit, still I have two clear offers in two OOS's. What do you guys think?

Thanks and all the best to those waiting for feedback.

If UT extended an outright acceptance instead of a conditional acceptance, which school would you attend? UT or one of the others? If the answer is UT, then you should participate in TIP.

I interviewed mid Feb and got an email from Mrs Harris with the following header:

THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME FROM YOUR BUSY SCHEDULE TO VISIT OUR CAMPUS | UTHSC COLLEGE OF MEDICINE | 2011 ENTERING CLASS... MEMPHIS, TN USA

It also said the first piece of mail I would be getting is a survey. Has anyone else received such an email.

Yes. I'm assuming everyone receives it. And you do receive a survey and that's it.

Alright thanks for the reply. Sounds like no reason to look into this particular email? Anyone else receive this email?

I've met with Dr. Gallant. He's very nice. He's an 80-something psychiatrist, and he's very big on community service. If you haven't done much, have a good reason for him or have to plans to start doing more. I just interviewed yesterday, and the biggest thing is to just relax and be yourself.

As mentioned above, I think everyone receives this email after their interview.

I received the same email that was followed about a week later with a letter that had a survey for me to complete and mail back. They mentioned at my visit that I would be getting this.

Interviewed on 2/16 and just received a "no decision" letter in the mail today.. bummer! Better than a rejection though. They say they will make a final decision by 4/15 and will mail the letter one week later. Anyone now how I can kiss butt...

Received interview invites tonight! I will have Dr. Suttle and Dr. Pearman. I saw above where Dr. Suttle was talked about, but does anyone have anything to say about Dr. Pearman? I'm stoked!

I had some issues establishing residency, but I finally got a letter last week saying I would be considered IS. Got the secondary that day, submitted it the next. Got the email confirmation that they had received all materials Tuesday.

So, basically I didn't get everything in until March 1, but they said "if I exceed interviewing standards" I will be invited to interview.

When is interviewing season up? Do I keep my hopes up?

Thanks!

Any advice is appreciated!

If you find out the answer to your question, let me know, haha

Interviewing on March 23. Has anyone had any experience with Dr. Suresh Kari or Dr. David Nutting? Also, does anyone know how many spots are currently left? Thanks.

Hey pal, I see you from New Haven - liked your city during my Yale BioSTEP program. I interviewed early last month and had Dr. Kari - He is the director of the VA emergency dept. and was my academics interviewer (1 = academic and 1 = personal experience & med. motivation). He was very great and we met on the parking lot and started interviewing on the hallway through to his office. Make sure to check their bios - beyond that its all about you so know your amcas well and be ready for some a couple of ethical scenarios. Dare not forgetting to read the "interview feedback" for UTHSC. I got in but can't tell # of open slots - just do your best.

All the best.

Just echoing a post above, did anyone hear about scholarships or know someone that did? Invitations are supposed to go out end of February. Just wondering if they actually had. Thoughts?

I think the emails have gone out.

I think the emails have gone out.

I would actually be surprised to hear all of the emails have gone out for scholarship interviews.

Edit: Well, I guess I'm wrong. I just called Diane and she said the invites have gone out already. Kinda shocked I'm not among them to be honest.

It's cool man, I heard you're on the scholarship list for the modesty award.

hmm, outside of scholarship offers.....i interviewed March 1st and have no idea if these interviews were for the "alternate" list or not? Is anyone hopeful for an acceptance after a later interview like this?

To be honest, this the exact reason it has been awesome to not be around premed people for the past two years . . . to be honest. 😀

Hey guys just got the no decision letter. I was just wondering what other people thought about this? Does anyone know someone who interviewed and got a rejection letter? The way I see it is there are now two things that can happen after receiving the no decision letter:

1. Get an acceptance letter after they review your application again.
2. Be put on the waitlist (which going from past numbers still gives you a decent chance of getting in).

Any thoughts on the no decision letters? I am just trying to figure out if i need to start coming up with ways to make my application stronger for next year or if I should stay positive and focus on getting in this go around.

SnoopDoc, congratulations on not getting the rejection letter!
While keeping in mind that "no expectations = no disappointments", I'd wait until the end of April (when all the acceptances have gone out and the waitlist has been ranked) before thinking about next year. From what I hear (well... read on SDN lol), this school is really good at giving you a realistic idea regarding your chances of getting in, even if you end up on the waitlist. So, keep your chin up and contact the school in late April but don't miss any opportunities to make yourself a better candidate next year, should the need arise. I interviewed after you did, so there's not much more I can say lol. Hopefully other SDN members will agree with me or prove me wrong; whichever happens, it should still be informative for you! Good luck!!!

OrangeRoost, I had a different experience with Dr. Suttle than the person who had told of theirs. I thought he was really nice and he really tried to understand my background. Questions were deep, but easy to answer.

As for the no decision and waitlist questions, no decision means just that. They didn't get to you or they couldn't come to a decision and they'll revisit your file another time. As for waitlist vs acceptances right now, the way I had understood was that they have seats available until the end of interviews for outright acceptance. Like a pp said, they do a decent job to letting you know where you stand. Don't read so much into the correspondence, it says what it means. 🙂
