Hey everyone,

I interviewed last Wednesday (3/9/2011) and just got my acceptance letter today (3/15/2011).

I really want everyone on this board to read this: Never lose sight of your dreams. Not only was I a re-applicant to Tennessee, but I didnt even get an interview last year. Not only did I receive an interview, I didnt even get a SECONDARY from Tennessee last year. However, I focused on improving every part of my application and worked my tail off this past year.

If you work hard enough, I guarantee it will work out for you. I was in a pretty rough place this time last year, but I am living proof that if you work hard enough you will eventually get in. Even if you have been rejected, please don't lose focus. Take it from me, if you work hard enough, it WILL work out for you.

I wish everybody waiting on letters, on the waitlist, or any of you aspiring to be a physician the best of luck. Keep your head up. If you want it bad enough, it always works out.

Congratulations ChillyWilly35!!! 👍
Thank you very much for your encouraging words... they are an inspiration to many (including myself) and show that UT made the right decision by accepting you!
Best wishes to you and all who are still waiting! Good luck!!! :luck:

Good to hear positive words. I got a "no decision" letter on Monday so I am a little nervous about waiting more for a decision. I'm wondering if it's a precursor to waitlists, but maybe it means that they really didn't come to an exact decision. *sigh.....anyone else in the no decision category?? Do alot of kids come off the waitlist?

Judging by last year's thread, no decision is USUALLY a precursor to the waitlist. Waitlist is formed in April, and about 60ish people get off the waitlist it seems. However, last year they had well over 200 people on the waitlist according the the 2010 sdn thread, so unless you're in the top 40-60 on the waitlist there isn't much hope. I am in the no decision category as well... I think a lot of us are.

I got my no decision letter as well... does anyone know how the waitlist is ranked?

by awesomeness. I was on the waitlist last year, and normally, I think I would have gotten in. They took abnormally few last year, but I hope the best for your guys and gals. Good luck.

Hey everyone,

I interviewed last Wednesday (3/9/2011) and just got my acceptance letter today (3/15/2011).

I'm confused by how you heard back so soon. If you interviewed on 3.9 shouldn't the letter have been sent on 3.18? Seems like everyone hears back about 2 weeks after interview, not a few days.

Did you send chocolate after your interview? 😉

Haha, no I didn't send chocolates. Apparently, they meet every Friday to discuss the interview candidates from that week. However, both of your interviewers must be present at the meeting for them to make a decision. If an interviewer cant make it, then they just decide on you the next week. So I guess I got lucky and both of my interviewers were at the meeting, and they let me know the following week.

Or I guess you could just send chocolates.......

Hey Guys, I interviewed on March 1st and still haven't gotten anything in the mail. Not even the survey. Most people have posted getting their letters a couple of weeks after their interview. I e-mailed Diane yesterday to ask about it, but she hasn't responded yet. Should I be worried?

Worried, no. You emailed Diane which was probably the right thing to do. She seems to have it really together and will probably be able to help you when she gets time to email you back.

I think it is correct that they usually have meetings most fridays concerning the weeks interviews. It does depend on your interviewer being present. Most the interviewers are professors and have schedules of their own to maintain so in some circumstances people will get letters either sooner or later than others. As far as the wait list is concerned it probably has not been determined. If you get a letter saying they have made no decision on you it means exactly that. They do reserve seats all the way to the end of interviews. They interviewed into April last year and will again this year I am sure. They always grant acceptances to more students that they have seats knowing that some will choose to go to a different school. They will grant initially around 195 acceptances knowing they have only 165 seats. After that they will pull from the waitlist. Last year the waitlist was over 240 people. Less than 60 came in off the wait list. It used to be if you were in the top 1/3 you had a great shot of getting in. If they make the list so huge again this year you have to be in the top 1/4. Also if you get a contingent acceptance, you have to go through the TIP program. You must make at least a C in all your classes to pass and get in. The TIP program is mini medical school and you must study your butt off. Down side is that if you fail you dont get in, also you give up your last summer of freedom and have to continue studying once August hits. Up side is that you will see the same information again should you pass. Seeing it for a second time will make your life easier. Also I believe everyone who makes it through TIP gets a scholarship. Another note about the waitlist. UT says that historically they get through 50 to 65 people on the waitlist. This is a little misleading. What they mean is they that historically they need to make 50 to 65 OFFERS of acceptance to people on the wait list before they can get all the slots filled. What this means is that if UT needs to fill 10 seats they will make offers until those seats are filled. It does not mean that 50 to 65 actually get accepted and attend UT or that 50-65 slots open up. Usually if a student is that high on the wait list at UT they may be pretty high at other schools as well. So when UT makes an offer they might turn it down. To go back to my example they may need to make 50-65 OFFERS to fill 10 seats. Now the number 10 was just pulled out of the air, it does fluxuate as students change their minds, defer or whatever happens opens up seats. Once you are placed on the wait list you cannot change position. However, if you have not yet had a decision made on your behalf and something new happens-you get an award, you get recognised for something, you finish research or get something published, etc, you can let UT know and that can change your status. So if you have a letter that says "no decision has been made" use what time you may have left to improve your situation.

Vital Armor got it right. I'm an M1 here (I also live at Phi Chi if you all have any questions about that) and we got an e-mail from Diane confirming that interview season ends on March 30th. After tomorrow they have the complete picture of the applicant pool and can then fill up the class without 'saving' spots for potentially stellar interviewees.

Interviewed last week. What has been the turnaround time for most people for hearing back?

About a week-week and a half, unless you get the "no decision" letter, then you're in for the long haul of waiting.

...And they had my mailing address wrong. I got an e-mail from Diane last night saying that my survey and letter had been returned to sender. Great. She also said that final decisions will be made tomorrow, and letters will go out next Friday (4/8)

Yea? So the projected April 15th date is a little earlier, eh? For "final decisions" that is.

Wow already tomorrow?! It'll be nice to know something but most likely it'll be being waitlisted, so more waiting. Hooray.

Haha, I understand completely, Rocher. Waiting for Christmas is a walk in the park after this whole medical school application thing.

Haha no kidding, I've developed amazing patience just as a coping mechanism. I interviewed in November, can't believe it's already been 5 months.

So I guess our fates are being decided today. Good luck to everyone. Anyone started to think of back up plans? Considering the Pharm Master's?

As I am typing this, people could be discussing my future. Please show me some love UT! :xf:

Hopefully we'll know roughly where we are at on the waitlist (assuming we make it onto it) in a couple of weeks. That'll give us some idea of what we are going to do next. If we are in the top 1/4th, I'd say there is a good chance of admission. Anything less, and I'm going to be assuming it's a no-go.

Judging by previous years' threads on SDN and the students I talked to at interview day, what you are saying is most likely accurate. It sounds like Nelson Strother is good about letting people know about how they stand in regard to waitlists. It seems as though if you are in the top 4th, you are in good shape come May 15th, other than that, it might as well be a rejection.

I don't know why I was under the impression the adcom met after 5pm... thanks OwlsGK30, now I can worry the whole day instead of just in the evening! Good luck to everyone!

You could be right GL, I have no idea what time they are meeting today, I just know that it was today.

Now to throw a wrench into things: I just talked with my pre-med advisor, and she said that most likely this meeting today is simply the last adcom meeting to discuss recent interviewees. She seems to think that the meeting to discuss the waitlist won't happen until mid April, as that's how it usually is. Not sure if that's true, though.

Your advisor's statement seems likely, but it contradicts TreyT's who seems to be getting his info from a higher power (Diane) lol.

While Diane is truly a higher power, it is normal that on friday they discuss the interviews of the week and if they have time and if the interviewer is there, they discuss other interviews they did not have time to get to in previous weeks. I was told wednesday by the chairman of the board that the wait list had not been generated yet and that there were indeed some slots available in the class. He also told me that they discuss every student they place on the waitlist. I had previously thought they score them in some way and in the end they just generate the list. Apparently I was wrong. According to the chairman they discuss and place each student on the waitlist after all interviews have finished. This means they revisit every student that has not recieved a final letter (acception/rejection). Last year the list was over 240 students so generating such a long list again may be very time consuming. I do know I received my waitlist letter last year around April 15th. This is similar to previous years. I do believe everyone should know their status but April 15th. Also, there is such a thing as medical school traffic laws, these are rules that every school in the country is supposed to abide by. One of the laws/rules (it could be traffic rules) is that all schools must have their lists finalized by May 15th. So the worst case scenario is that we all have to wait until then, but as far as I know that rarely happens. Also, the interviews did not make it into April as expected (they did the last couple years), so they are ahead of normal expectations this year. This may also mean they will be ahead in letting us know our place this year. Hope this helps🙂

VitalArmor - I noticed you mentioned the TIP program in the past post and stated that your Wife did participate in the program as part of the Contingent acceptance to UTHSC. I got into two other schs and UT put me into the TIP program, I do want to UT though, so could you get more info about the program from her and you guys could PM me eitherway. I posted the question earlier on w/o much response and I haven't heard from the programs' alumni.

So I have just finished filling out the FAFSA and began to look at the deadlines for UT and realized that I am around a month late past their priority deadline. My question is...how big of a problem is it going to be for me to receive as much financial aid at UT as I need? I have been accepted since October, and didn't realize how vital it was to fill out my FAFSA so soon. Any information on this subject would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Not sure you're going to find a good answer on here. I'd call UT and talk with the fin aid department.

I would find a person who was accepted the first week of orientation in August...just a couple days before the start of school. They could really let you know what to do. Also, I have noticed that as far as UT's "deadlines" are concerned...well they are more like "guidelines" so no worries.

I just received an email from Ms. Harris saying my final decision letter will be mailed this Friday. Did everyone receive this?

Looks like everyone got the email from Ms. Harris. It sounded like a pre-rejection email but if everyone got it then I guess it could be anything. :xf:

oh gosh, i would hope not! i'm still rooting for waitlist or.....acceptance to be more on the positive side. =)

Based on last year's thread, everyone that received an email like this was placed on the waitlist.

I'd take that rather than be on hold/no decision for several months only to be rejected. Here's to hoping for top 1/4th of waitlist.

I didn't get this email...did anyone else not get it either?

UTKpremed stay positive; you might be one of the chosen ones 🙂
Let us know, and more importantly if you do get an acceptance: call the school and tell them you're honored, but you'd rather give your spot to GL2814 lol.
Hope everything goes well for you!

Good news....The email was in my junk mailbox! I was about to freak out! Let me know what you hear! Good luck everyone!!

I didn't get the e-mail at all, does that mean rejection? or maybe they forgot about me? I hope not.

UTKpremed is absolutely correct, you must check your spam folder, I hate application period because I have to accept soooo much crap into my e-mail.
