Thanks for the info! Do you perhaps know whether or not they outright reject anyone post-interview? The waitlist doesn't seem as hopeful if everyone they interview gets waitlisted.

I'm not positive, but according to some data that my advisor compiled into a book about each allopathic school: UVM interviews around 550 applicants and accept 25% outright, reject 40% outright, and waitlist 35%. In the book it is not split up between OOS and IS, so I'm assuming that majority of the 25% are IS, and likewise majority of the 35% are OOS. I'm not 100% about how updated her data is, but it seems feasible.

I'm wondering, is this waitlist fluid throughout the season? I mean, are they also going to start rejecting some of us once everyone has been interviewed? I'd hate to have to keep waiting and waiting all summer long... UVM is my top choice, but if I have to move on, I'd rather know sooner! Still going to maintain hope though.

They don't mercy reject. They just leave you to languish on the WL until the first day of classes pass. Then you get a conciliatory letter saying sorry a la BP commercials in South Park.

So unless they really don't like you, and reject you post interview, you are stuck in purgato...I mean the wait list.

I was just stalking my online applicant portal and saw that I'm going to be invited to an interview! A little worrisome in that I haven't gotten an email and when I checked the dates it said I hadn't been given a date yet, but hopefully that will come. As others have said, I thought interview season was over.....still hoping for more interviews!

I had the same thing happen to me; there was a lag period of about 5 days between seeing it on my interview portal (WITH a date) and getting the email.

Make sure you check your online status folks!

Jeez.....that's crazy! Did your already have a date listed?

and CougarMD:
when you noticed it, did it already have a date listed?

I'm a bit worried that they'll take it back or something.....until I actually have a date set it seems a bit suspect...

so i just heard today that i have an interview scheduled for 4/21 (thank God). i called the admissions office and spoke with Shona, and she said that they usually place many people on he waitlist because they like to interview everyone before they make a decision (even though they have already accepted a lot as well). she said that people will probably find out early may if they are accepted or not, as their last interview is supposed to be the last week of april. i believe i am actually amongst the last to be interviewed.

Got the email this morning with an actual date. Looks like I'll be interviewing with you on the 21st! Can't wait to check out the school and the city!

Just got an acceptance email today. From OOS Waitlist🙂 Interviewed October 18th. We are so excited, this is and always has been my number one choice. (If you are still waiting and this is the case for you keep on showing your UVM love. I sent LOI about every 3 weeks.)

Good Luck to everyone still waiting to hear back, or still interviewing.

I just started a facebook group for our Class 2015 as I couldn't find one, please join.

I am also really interested in UVM... I have called numerous times stating my total interest and inquiring about what else I can do. Plus I have sent a few updates and a LOI, but I'm OOS and pre-interview... How can I really get them to notice me aside from what I've done? Also, how did you write so many LOI? You had that many different reasons to write about? 🙂 I just don't want mine to sound repetitive, ya know?

I called and spoke with one of the admission staff, they recommended to send something that shows continued interest about every 3 weeks. (From what I understood, more than this would be overwhelming from a clerical standpoint). But they like to know how interested you are. If it is your absolute top choice, let them know that, but be sure you are 100% sure.

Some of my contacts were updates to projects I was working on. But some were emails just letting them know why I felt UVM would be a great fit. Once or twice I just called and let them know in person. I count all of these things as the contacts.

What is the best way???? I don't know, just be polite, show your love, and show that you respect and value their time as well. That is all the advice I have.

Good Luck, I hope everything works out for you and everyone out there applying

Sorry, I just notice you said you are pre-interview. I don't have any clue if what I said would work in your situation or is advisable. I would suggest calling and asking the admissions staff what the best, and most respectful way to express your interest. They will let you know, and to me seemed genuinely happy to hear of people's interest.

HOW awesome is that!? Congratulations!! PM your information so when we see each other in person, we know who we are! How exciting! I am looking forwarding to meeting everyone and to interviewing at this wonderful school 🙂 My friend graduated from here and says that it is beyond amazing, even with the -38oC weather 🙂

fingers, legs, arms, hair and eyes are all crossed!

UVM College of Medicine Class of 2015

Hello!

If you don't mind my asking, what were these letters that you sent every three weeks like? I had planned to do one a month, but after the first one, I'm a little at a loss of what to say. Were they long each time? Additionally, did you send them via mail or email?

Thanks!!!

Ya mine already had a date set, I just had to confirm it. I still have no email about it, maybe they just send them out to people who haven't confirmed already.

Just a theory I'm making up right now: they don't admit anyone who hasn't sent in a letter of interest.

Lamelisted last tuesday, OOS.

Sent in a letter on Saturday, acknowledged this morning.

6 hours later-admitted.

Moral of the story, send letters and make sure they really know you loved the school! Don't give up, everybody!

Off topic but...

I'm going to be in Burlington for a few days in a couple of weeks, with several days of nothing to do, so I'm looking for ways to not go crazy waiting for my interview in my hotel room haha. Does anyone know if there are good fly fishing (or non-ice spinning) locations within walking/public transit distance that are good this time of year?

Thanks!

I think you're right.....I sent an update and got my interview offer 2 days later! I guess we should all keep spamming their inbox

While I like your theory, I know of one person from my interview day that was accepted from the waitlist within two days without writing a letter. I don't know why they waitlist people for only a couple days, instead of just giving an acceptance???

Still keeping my fingers crossed, been waitlisted since December, and sent in several letters. I LOVE UVM, I hope they love me back soon 🙂

Oh well. Let's say it's a good rule-of-thumb? I definitely loved it there as well.

yup. I think youre right. Time to start spamming their inbox some more. And congrats on the acceptance by the way!

The day has finally come! First acceptance to medical school! Re-applicant to medical school. Interviewed in September, OOS Waitlist in October...so excited, absolutely loved UVM! Have faith. Cheers.

Yeah, I wish it worked for me 🙂 I have sent them a letter and updates and though they've acknowledged them all, still no interview invite 🙁 Still keeping my fingers crossed! I've also called in lol and Shona is really nice 🙂

I think I'm coming here!

congratulations to everyone getting accepted...although its making me sooo anxious! haha

Interviewed December, WL, have send multiple update letters...and no acceptance...

keeping up the hope...keeping up the hope...:xf:

really want this school...and still dont have any other acceptances!

How does the March 30th rule (med schools have to have admitted as many students are there are in the incoming class) apply to UVM? Do you think we'll be seeing more acceptances in the next couple weeks? It seems like people that were waitlisted a while back are finally starting to come off the waitlist, and many people who recently interviewed, are spending a very short time on the list.

I think this is what he's referring to:
https://www.aamc.org/students/applying/recommendations/62826/policies_admissionofficers.html

"4. By March 30 of the matriculation year...each school or program have issued a number of offers of acceptance at least equal to the expected number of students in its first-year entering class and have reported those acceptance actions to the AAMC Section for Medical School Application Services."

Don't worry about it too much...remember that (at least according to the MSAR at most schools) places typically offer 1.5 to 3 acceptances for each student who matriculates. So there could still be more than half of the acceptances issued after March 30. In other words, if UVM wants a class of 85 people, they have to accept 85 by march 30, but odds are good that 40 of those will withdraw...leaving room for more waitlist/acceptance movement.

plus, the AAMC puts out "recommendations," they are not stipulations or mandates in any way. UVM is probably one of the exceptions to the rule due to its location and crazy tuition fees 🙂

good luck everyone! by the way, for all of those who interviewed, did you really pay $500-$600 for a ticket?!?!?!? (from Los Angeles, CA at least). SHEESH!!! That's so expensive!

paid 400+ all the airlines that fly there xcept for jet blue sucks. unfortunately jet blue only has cheaper prices during promotion

i flew from SF btw

I just bought my ticket from Seattle to VT. With a few days added in New York it was just over $400. Glad I was able to combine the trip with visiting friends in VT and NY!

I had an interview last Tuesday, with my flight coinciding with the 5th worst snow storm there. I booked the trip a month in advance with expedia and it came to a whopping $750 for flight and 2 nights hotel. It was my worst flight experience, with major layovers and cancellations. I ended up having to fly to Boston and carpool part of the way. I would suggest breaking the trip into parts if it works for you and is cheaper. It is a great school, worth the hassle if I get in.

Sounds like a mini-nightmare just getting to the interview! Glad it sounds like it went well for you! Thanks for the advice on transportation....I figured it could be a struggle to get there, hopefully a full day is enough extra time.

Semi-related:
Has anyone stayed with a student host at Vermont? How did you like it?

Thanks!

I stayed with a host. I would definitely recommend it. They showed me around town and gave me a lot of insight into the school.

o.m.g.

Got the email last night at 11pm, didn't see it until this morning. This is going to be a great day. :luck: 😀

I really REALLY liked UVM when I visited and it is highly likely I'll be going here.

Interviewed in Sept, waitlisted in Oct. OOS (but in new england) and sent in two letters of interest.

Looks like there's some movement off the list starting :xf:

congrats on the acceptances guys

Ahh! I hope they save some seats for those of us with upcoming interviews! Makes me nervous....

I can't claim to have any inside knowledge, but when I called to try to reschedule my early April interview to some time in March (didn't feel like flying across the country twice in one month), the woman on the phone couldn't change my date, but she did reassure me that they keep spots open in the class throughout the interview season. Hope that eases the nerves a bit!

Thanks! I feel like they wouldn't bother interviewing us if their class was already full, but then again, the whole process is a bit weird and occasionally dehumanizing, so I never know what to think!

I'm going to choose to believe what they've told you. Thanks for sharing, I appreciate it!!

Vermont seems to be one of the most humane schools that actually respects applicants through this process so i dont they would invite us to interview if the class is full, especially knowing the tickets are $500...at least i hope not.

Although they state that they enroll a large number of Cali kids...its a bit unnerving how many of us comment on this thread from California...and that some are already accepted...
:luck:happy st p
