Thank you honey! It's the MCAT im worried about... and the fact that I'm from a really small no-name school

Well I think the MCAT isn't bad. Their average is like 11.something I think?

Oh god don't worry about being from a no-name school. I'm on the same boat, and I interviewed there, my MCAT was only 1 point higher than yours. From my experience during interviews, the fact that I am from a completely unknown school helped me stand out a little bit. Good luck, there is still time.

Thanks guys! I feel a million times better

Complete and in review since 7/22. I assume nothings going to change at this point. Do they not reject?

In the same boat: complete since early August. My understanding is that they don't reject until the day they send out decisions. However, if February or March rolls around and no interview invite, you can probably read the writing on the wall.

hey all, a current yale med student here. i just remembered how i'd look at these sites and thought i'd go back and offer some insights to those in my shoes just over a year ago.

i interviewed at 7 places, most of them top 10 and honestly, yale is the sweetest place you can go to med school. i was talking to a harvard m4 student just a couple of weeks ago and it was clear even she was jealous (her husband is a yale student).

part of the reason is the curriculum. no grades, 1 exam per class/per semester (pass/fail and anonymous to everyone except registrar--including professors), no attendance. a downside of this is that yale gives you all the rope you need to hang yourself, and i suspect maybe a student here and there doesn't do as well as they could have. but the energy of the atmosphere is contagious--students here have a great time but they also STUDY. the lack of competition makes for an exceptionally collaborative environment. kids regularly share their study notes, everything. we just got done with a round of qualifiers and some students sent out their notes (70 pages single spaced for each class!). gunners needn't apply here.

best part of yale is the people--not only intelligent, but highly, highly accomplished. i can't even imagine trying to compete against my class. yale is the only place that doesn't rank--even in 3rd year (though they give grades) so coming out everyone is 1st but also last. at first i thought this a disadvantage, but believe me you do not want to compete against classmates in a top 10 school. coming from yale + having good research (yale produces most academicians per class in country) = a top notch resicency--their match list was part of why a turned down a full ride at pritzker to come here.

while NH is not the best, NYC is $14 and 1.5 hrs away and with all the time you have here you'll have a much better time than at a cutthroat school on the vegas strip.

anyways, thought i'd offer my 2 cents, feel free to pm questions.

Thanks for the thoughts!! We all really appreciate it. I have a question about what you said though-- (I'm interviewing in late Jan). You mention that the system (no attendance, no competition, NYC nearby) really allows people to work and play hard- how true is that day to day? Can you just take weekends off? If say, one had an SO in a different state and wanted to visit them... how realistic would it be to just bounce out of new haven for a couple days?

Sorry for the trolling. Just to be nit-picky...Stanford also has no ranking, no AOA, no pre-clinical grades very similar to Yale. We actually only recently added clerskhip grades (Pass or Honors), which is rubric based (meaning 100% of the class can get honors if they perform well). I'm not sure about other places, but I don't think the the no rank, no grades all 4 years is entirely unique to either Yale or Stanford.

Having said that. Yale definitely sounds awesome.

hi mdeast, so this it gets really nitty-gritty but yale goes so far as to refuse to provide residencies with a histogram of the kinds of grades students get in their third year. so while many schools are pass/fail no rank in first 2 years, all grade in 3rd year (yale included) and while they may not rank you officially, they tell residencies what percentile your grades would put you if they did grade you. yale does not do this.

regarding visiting a SO in another city, several classmates have SOs all over the east coast and take weekends (and sometimes days) off. everything is online and exams are take home. of course for anatomy and pre clinical clerskship you have to be at school. there are even classmates who are married and live in NYC and commute to class.

very true. recently we had inter-grad school IM competitions and med school dominated winning volleyball, soccer, and football all in one weekend. athletic, accomplished bunch overall.

don't get me wrong--yale has its downsides, as does any other school. but its amazing when your main motivation to learn physiology for example--is so you can be a great doctor and not b/c there is a physio exam at the end of the week. it's also a huge perk to have extra time to study for the only test that does matter--the boards, while developing excellent research and patient interaction skills and getting a yale md at the same time.

Ummm ... Stanford vs. Yale, I wonder who will win 🙄

OK guys, I don't mean to be a troll (a term I only recently learned), but I feel as though I am one of the normal, non-nerdy, non-paranoid, non-crazy future docs on this site.

First: mdeast, you are a med student at STANFORD. so stop going on SDN application threads from other schools, and for that matter, stop going on SDN all together. It really ain't that great of a site. I fully intend on never visiting SDN the second I determine what school I'm going to.

Second: I have several great acceptances so far, and it REALLY bothers me when people put as their signature "Class of 2015? You know that's right." or something like that. OK great, we get it, you're in med school and it's a great accomplishment, but don't rub it in the faces of people who are still worried about getting an acceptance. Plus, it doesn't make you look any cooler or smarter because you're going to be part of the collective class of 2015. Figure out what school you're going to and then MAYBE it's ok to put that (for instance, Yale c/o 2015).

Third: good luck to everyone still waiting to hear back. If you want to be a doctor, it's going to happen. If you don't get into Yale, it doesn't matter, even the "worst" med school out there is still really good. Peace out.

I am so sorry that my signature offends you so much....ya coulda told me😉

It is not meant to offend. It is merely excitement over something that took me about a decade to accomplish. I am sorry that you think I am trying to look cool or smart (though if you read my post history....you would see that this is not the case😉) or that I am trying to rub it in someone's face. The "You know that's right" is actually a Psych joke about pancakes....it really doesn't mean much more than that🙂 The fact that I was accepted is posted in my sig because this way I don't get numerous PMs and questions about whether or not I've been accepted while I answer questions around the boards.

Congratulations on getting into medical school. You should be proud of yourself. It is an accomplishment, truly. A lot of people try and are unable to do it the first, second or third time....sometimes ever.

For a lot of people, SDN is a place of stress....but is also a place of answers. I have considered it a major blessing because I was not a "pre-med". I had to navigate and figure this all out myself. Without SDN and a couple of other key sources providing with information, I would have been lost.

The final part of your post is probably correct. Determination can make an MD happen....that is the one part of this process I believe in. I don't think you can become an astronaut by sheer determination...but I DO believe you can become a doctor.

Not really sure where the rest of your frustration is coming from, but I am sorry it exists and I hope that you find an outlet for it.

I fully intend on never visiting SDN the second I determine what school I'm going to.

If no one comes back on the site after they're accepted, how are those of us still flailing around in the darkness of the application process supposed to get advice? I hope you do decide to come prowl the school-specific forums next year to help out those who will be your future classmates. I know I will, I shudder to think where I would be without those above me who came back to SDN, however lame it is, after they got their big envelopes. 🙂

Really? Don't be a party pooper. Congrats on getting into med school, and it's totally your prerogative whether or not to put that accomplishment in your signature. I, however, like to think of SDN as a supportive and collaborative environment rather than a competitive one. Therefore, putting an acceptance in your sig is a way to show off your HUGE accomplishment to the people who have been supporting you and cheering you on. I honestly really love to see familiar SDNers nab an acceptance and I think I would feel that way regardless of whether I myself had an acceptance. No one is rubbing anything in anyone's face. Get down off your high horse and hang out with the rest of us for a change. You might like it.

That being said, can we end this thread hijacking? Hey guys, Yale! I love Yale! I hope I get an interview there! Congrats to all who did, btw 👍

Why did you post this in the Yale thread? 😕

And you are most certainly a troll.

Thanks for the info! What are the downsides you speak of? Are they legitimate? There's this med school I work at, and I've talked to students that have real criticisms of the school, unlike the B.S. (or at least not very important things) that tour guides tell you.

My guess is these are the last couple of weeks. Is everyone pretty much expecting another batch of invites to go out this week or next?

Something I just picked up...Did you know a few years ago, Yale was considering paying the tuition of all of its medical school students? In order to help students go into the usual high-paying specialties (in order to pay off debt), Yale was considering drawing from its endowment (a famous one at that, valued at billions) to help fund the educations of its students.

Good luck to those pre-interview/interviewed!

Financial bubbles make people do crazy things.

Interview invite today...they had dates available until 2/18.

Hey all I have a quick question about the application status. It says my "Application completed and in review on: 28-OCT-10", but at the same time it says: "Fee Waiver Received NO" while my fee has been received.

Do both the fee and waiver have to be received by admissions? Or am I fine and just getting paranoid?

Thanks

You're being paranoid.

Yea, it's one or the other. The fee waiver waives the fee.

Yup, i agree with cole. You are being paranoid. (If you DID NOT use a Fee Waiver, it has to say NO. If you PAID the FEE, then it will say RECEIVED.) Mine said the same thing.

Just got an invite! Complete in early August.

^ Congrats! =D I remember your post earlier about not giving up yet cuz there's another round in January =p I'm in the same boat too, hoping for the best!

Interview for rhesus plzzzzz? I promise I'm a cool person in real life!

Sorry to re-hash something that has been mentioned before; however, is Yale receptive to update letters (NOT letters of interest)?

I have some significant updates that are not reflected anywhere on my app. What's the word on the street?

Thanks.

I think the general rule is to not send updates unless you've interviewed. If you've interviewed, maybe call or send an email and ask?

Actually, from previous posts in this thread, Yale specifically requests NOT to have "pre-interview" updates sent. A couple of people have sent them and they have gotten that response. Rude? I agree.

I didn't go back far enough to find the posts BrainBuff is referring to, but I trust it.

If I were you, being it's so late in the season and you've got nothing to lose, I'd just call and tell them that you have some significant updates and ask how they'd like you to let them know. What's the worse that can happen? They don't give you an interview? I sent a couple of updates to other schools this morning with that attitude.

That's been my thinking as well. If you don't have an interview by now, sending letters/updates isn't going to keep you from one.

"Additional letters of recommendation or other supplemental material may also be sent directly to the admissions office by email: [email protected].
Email is the preferred method for sending supplemental material, but we will accept material sent by conventional mail (Office of Admissions, Yale School of Medicine, 367 Cedar Street, New Haven, CT 06510)."

I have a random question. Can ppl get accepted into Yale med before March? I know Cornell does a few early acceptances in December but wasn't sure about Yale. Someone told me they got in already and I found that odd lol.

Thanks for everyone's input last week. I was aware of those posts in which people indicated Yale rather directly told them to not send updates.

I have not yet been selected for an interview but, considering where we are in the 2011 cycle, I opted to send them a pre-interview update. At this point, what's the harm? It was all new info that wasn't in my prim/sec.

Best of luck to everyone.

Thanks for the response. I didn't think it was EDP b/c I know you can only apply to one program and this person mentioned getting multiple acceptances, unless I'm mistaken about how EDP actually works. Anyway, thanks again.

Nope, that's how it works. If they EDPed Yale and got accepted they wouldn't even have applied to any other schools. Looks like you got a liar on your hands. Or maybe it was a typo confusion, and they actually meant they had been accepted at Bale University in Bale, Croatia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bale_(town)
