Any out of state applicants? I received the email confirming my AMCAS was received, should I expect and secondary and interview if im Out Of State?

It depends on your stats. I suppose high MCAT and GPA can alleviate OOS status while applying to any school. I believe among the six applicants who were in my interview day group, one person was out of state.

My stats are not that high, but I was born in Johnson City while my father was earning his PhD in pharmacology from East Tennessee University. You think that might give me an edge over other OOS applicants ?

nontraditional OOS here. I am interviewing at ETSU in a few weeks. I think that ETSU looks at your whole application so yes I believe that your connection to Johnson City will give you that edge you are talking about.

I'm OOS, but spent the first 22 years of my life in TN. Moved post undergrad, but my family are all still in TN. Any benefit to having close ties to the state? Didn't see much on MSAR or Quillen website about ties.

In general, public schools like seeing ties to the state.

so this might seem like a crazy question, but I figure its okay since most of us are going crazy with the whole application process...anyways do any of you all know if it possible for your secondary to not be reviewed because you didnt print out the confirmation page? It says on the site "Your online responses will not be received nor reviewed by the College of Medicine until your payment has been finalized and you have printed the confirmation page for your records."
My payment has been made and I submitted my responses on 10/4 but wasnt hooked up to a printer so didnt print the page... all my LOCs are in so should I be freaking out about not printing this thing or is it normal for it to be over a week and still not heard your application is complete?? please help!!

No, I'm 100% sure that wouldn't happen. It took them nearly a month to send me confirmation that my application was complete.

According to today's email, they have reviewed my completed application and have placed it in an active holding category. I believe at the pre-interview talk our group was told that this is the only status you can achieve before Oct. 15th. Does anyone know more about this? Is Oct. 15th some sort of AAMC first acceptance release date?

This is correct. Everyone is put on hold until Oct 15th.

Just got my interview invite today! I am so grateful for the opportunity and I am really looking forward to getting to see the campus and meet the folks over there. Scheduled for November 8th.

One question from others who have applied there: is it inappropriate to bring my spouse? I am a non-traditional, my wife is a vet, and would love to come and see the area, see the campus, etc. Obviously she wouldn't be in any interviews or anything, but I am just wondering if it is a situation where she could come and see the campus and such?

Thanks!

I've never heard of anyone having any trouble and intend to bring my wife along, too. That is, if I'm lucky enough to get an invite. Congrats and good luck!

Certified letter came in the mail yesterday, and I picked it up at the post office this morning. I'm so excited! This is one of my favorite schools. I am an instate applicant. I've been a member for a while even though this is my first post. I figured it would help others to post that they have started sending out acceptances.

Secondary Complete: 8/1/2011
Interview:9/12/2011
Acceptance:10/17/2011

Thanks a lot!

It is absolutely gratifying to see years of the undergraduate efforts, days spent volunteering at a hospital, hours upon hours of research, primaries, secondaries, essays, fees, and interviews to finally converge to a single letter 🙂

I had my interview the day after you. I'm still waiting to hear back from Quillen. Did your letter come certified mail also?

So, if you are invited for an interview how much notice do they give for your assigned date?

Yes, it will be a certified letter delivered into your hands should you get accepted.

They give you plenty of time - almost 3 weeks in my case. But as far as I understood, ours was the first group to be interviewed this year, so it might become more compacted as time goes on.

So I don't seem to be hearing much about people receiving interview invites. I have been complete since 9/28 with the generic promise "you should be hearing from us soon." Last year, I was invited to an interview less than 2 weeks after getting the "complete" email if I remember correctly. I interviewed last year on 9/8. I obviously didn't get in last year...was put on the alternate list for about 6 months and removed in March. But having a 8-10 months or so, I have made myself what I think to be a more competitive applicant in comparison to last year and still haven't heard anything. Does anybody know about others getting interview invites over the past couple of weeks? I had noticed that not many, if any, had been posting about it. I didn't know if they had gone into some kind of latent period or something.

I can only give you my experience, which obviously may differ from person to person.

Application submitted through AMCAS: June 27
Application/Transcripts Verified by AMCAS: July 19
Took MCAT: August 12 (I know, a little late. Wasn't originally planning to apply this cycle)
MCAT Scores Received: September 13th
Received Quillen Secondary: September 21st
Completed Quillen Secondary and paid fee: September 22rd
Confirmation from Quillen that they had everything and I would hear from them soon: September 28th
Invite to interview: October 17th

My interview is scheduled for November 8th.

It is definitely a process and patience is a virtue. I am still waiting to hear from UTHSC about an interview date, but I know these things take time, and due to my late MCAT, many people may be in front of me. Stay positive, and I am sure you'll hear something from them soon!

Oh I'm not concerned at this point. I just didn't know if they were still handing out interview invites like they were a month ago. I just hadn't heard any buzz on here recently

I haven't even gotten a secondary yet. Maybe I should call in...

Holding? Ouch. So much for a "safety" school. Thought I rocked the interview.

Congrats to those who got accepted!

When was your interview?

Between October 1st and 6th. Don't want to give away my identity in case Duck Taylor likes to peruse the forums.

I was actually late for my second interview here because my first interview lasted so long. It was suppose to last between 30 mins to an hour and mine lasted for an hour and a half. I think my problem was that I said I wasn't sure if I wanted to go to quillen or memphis when they asked me why I wanted to attend their school (because I'm not sure, I had not visited memphis at the time) but I don't think they liked that honesty. Or maybe they just didn't like my personality. Oh well. Still kind of frustrating. I thought I was a shoe in here. I actually liked the students and facilities much better here than at UT.

That is a tough situation because you dont want to lie to the school but you also don't want to shoot your self in the foot. The reason I asked your interview date was I was in the first batch and I was put on hold. The committe met on Monday and I wanted to see how fast they were at releasing their decision from the meeting. They only meet once a month so it's a long wait if they decide to put you on hold.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. A bunch of the students in my class, including myself, were waitlisted. Good luck!

Is this the same committee that gives out interviews? My secondary was complete 10/4; but I haven't heard back yet.

No. This committee consists of 50 or so people (apparently one of the largest in the country) and they have everyone who has been interviewed on the screen, ranked by their "score." Then they discuss each applicant holistically down the list and decide their fate.

Deciding who gets an interview is a little more lax.

ill be interested to know when you do hear about an interview invite, i was complete 10/14 and have not heard anything yet either... keep me posted and i will do the same!! good luck!!

Sounds good, I'll let you all know. I'm glad to hear I'm not alone. (Although, with recent events, my hopes are so blown that I've started applying to graduate schools as a back-up to keep me busy and out of loan repayment while reapplying to MSTPs and MD programs next year.) :bang:

Accepted, certified letter arrived 10/28.

Interviewed 10/4. I love the school so much but I am just across the border in NC and the out of state tuition is...ouch. I have another acceptance already and the school is private but somehow quite a bit cheaper. $51k OOS is ridiculous and it goes up $20k for M3. Deciding is going to be hard. Easier to decide if I hear back from my IS schools, but I really love Quillen so much. I may have to just splurge for it.

Congrats! How close to the border are you? I think they count the counties in NC bordering TN as in-state.

This, anyone OOS get a secondary? Got the "we received your AMCAS" e-mail about a month ago and still no word. Like others, I have ties to the state but there is no way of them knowing that unless I can tell them about it in the secondary 😛
