Had my interview today at FIU. It was a pleasant experience. Eat well before hand as I did get quite hungry by the end of the day. Best of luck to everyone!

Any reapplicants --that were "accepted/alternates" last year-- invited for an interview yet? I was complete 8/4/2011, and had hoped for an interview request by now...my app has only gotten better and i submitted it in a MUCH more timely fashion this cycle...perhaps im a lil too anxious...

I would recommend sending them a letter of interest. This would be particularly helpful if you contacted them last cycle on what you could've done to improve your app, and how you've made progress on their suggestions. If not, I would still do it to show your continued interest, and how your app is stronger. In addition to updating through the computer system, I also recommend e-mailing Deans Roller and Dollinger. Definitely emphasize wanting to stay in the the South Florida community after medical school in your LOI. While some may say to wait, I think FIU finishes its interview cycle too early to be passive. It's doubtful the LOI could hurt, and in fact, it may end up helping you. :luck:

Has FI rejected anyone pre interview, or do they wait till later?

Just got an interview invite, OOS. Submitted secondary 08/02.

Anyone know the acceptances to interview data? also how hard is it to become a florida resident?

If you are not a Florida Resident now, the only way you can become a Florida Resident status is by literally marrying a Florida Resident. I say this because it happened in FIU's current class (they told us during the financial aid discussion). So unless you have a sweetheart in the Sunshine State, you are out of luck.

so do you mean they count all 4 years of tuition based on your residency status when you apply?

or can i work in florida for 1 year and gain residency?

No, if your status changes mid way, they change your tuition. I was saying two second years got married, one of them a Florida Resident, and now the non-resident is considered a resident.

As far as what classifies a Florida Resident otherwise, I do not know. You should try a government website for that.

II today 🙂! Been P.R.C for a long time now (first week of July maybe?).

Unexpected OOS interview invite 😀 today. Cannot express in words how excited I am about this one. Saw some great advice, but does anyone know roughly how many people they plan on interviewing this year? I saw they are expecting to matriculate 120 M1s, but maybe missed that part. :xf: for FIU!

I thought they were taking 80 students this year?

Anyone have stats/estimates of how many are interviewed versus accepted for IS/OOS?

You are right it is 80, I just saw someone said 120 earlier in this thread and was echoing that. http://medicine.fiu.edu/admissions.php?ss=faq

I dont know, but if I had to guess ~10 OOS interviewed per 1 seat. Its a public institution so the vast majority of their class has to come from in-state.

Yes, it's 120 students for our cycle; this fact was made pretty clear during interview day. 🙂

Not sure if it was posted here, but what are the interview:acceptance ratios? I realize that it may be different considering the larger class size...

I'm pretty sure you need to reside in Florida for 2 years to be considered a "resident for tuition purposes." Also, I do not think you can change your status once you begin school -- since you moved there as a student (it also won't help you get accepted as a non-resident), unless you get married (as noted) OR buy property. This is how it is in some other states...

Went to FIU for law school - am a non-traditional who is looking to practice medicine but also to have a major role in public policy creation. Always wanted to go into medicine, am currently in health care law with certification in health care risk management working in a quasi-clinical setting.

Applied to medical school eight years ago after undergraduate, applied way too late, had sort of skewed poor MCAT (27 with a 7 in physics :/), got wait listed at UM but never chosen. Applying again now with a 3.5 undergraduate GPA, 31 MCAT (with 10 Bio, 11 Physics, 10 Verbal), and was third in my class in law school.

Anyway, my FIU application was submitted about two weeks ago, and just got my interview invite today! Interviewing on 10/28/2011, just got plane tickets, hotel, car, etc. Anyone else interviewing on that date?

Also - any tips on blind interviews?

Cheers

I was wondering how long it took for someone who already interviewed to go from interview complete to admission committee scheduled?

I interviewed about 2 1/2 weeks, just wondering.

I was interviewed on 9/30, and my status changed to Admissions Committee Scheduled on 10/6.

I wonder if the 9/16 interviewees will find out acceptance status on 10/15... probably not till 11/15 based on when Committee Review Scheduled.

Okay, I've said this elsewhere but here it goes: Florida residency of 12 months PRIOR to matriculation is the only way to get instate tuition at any point during the 4 years unless you get married to a FL resident. Buying property doesn't count for FL residency for tuition purposes because you still only moved here for school. So yes, if you enter school as a non-resident, you will be paying out of state tuition for all 4 years.

I have taken Cal 1 wuth Analytic Geo.... but I need a stats fufillment.

I have a class at my uni FAU title Exp. Design... a psychology stats class will they, fiu , count it as a stats classs or do i have to take into to stats.

Has anybody's status changed from the "ADCOM scheduled" to "Decision made"?

I am just trying to put together a timeline to know if I will be notified on 10/15 or 11/15. Thanks !

Sorry there, LadyRugger, but I will only have lived in FL for a year and a half by the first day of school next Fall, and that solidly qualifies me as a FL resident. One need only take the necessary steps to declare domicile and obtain/furnish the necessary factual documentation corroborating such action(s) to make a valid claim of residency. As long as you will have met the standard for residency for ONE year preceding the first day of classes for which you wish to be considered a resident, you should be fine😀
I called the FL State Education Board in February for good measure to confirm this because it meant I was giving up my residence from my previous state, and did not want to be caught in 'no man's land'...happened to me in undergrad (not a resident here...yet, and not a resident there...any more😱)!!

Also, just so you know, property ownership alone does not qualify you to become a resident for tuition purposes so buying property is a SURE dead end🙁

Sorry there, LadyRugger, but (

Sorry, I never claimed to be an expert... Ive actually been a resident for 7 years so i wouldnt know but I was just going off of word of mouth regarding another state... Glad you could share your expertise 🙂

No worries, LadyRugger! However, I'm definitely NO expert😎 I'm just sharing facts I picked up along the way in my own inquiry. I think it is important to set the record straight on these boards because some pre-meds literally worship the lines floating around here:scared:

I've just learned over the years that it is important to qualify your counsel objectively, whether or not you have expertise:luck:

My status still says committee scheduled, also curious if anyone has a status further along than that..

Mine says "Admissions Committee Review Completed" and it gives a date for when it happened

I somehow managed to lose the link for the status page...I looked through the thread and didn't see it. Would someone mind posting it again? Thanks!

Interview Invite today! My first of the year so I'm super excited!

Scheduled for Nov 18th (earliest available) does anyone know if that's really late for FIU? Thanks and good luck to everyone!

jkchang, are you IS or OOS? and when did you submit your 2ndary/complete?

IS (lived in miami till i was 18, then UF undergrad, but SMP at Tufts in boston this year)

Submitted my secondary on 8/21
Preliminary Review Completed 9/1
Interview Invite: 10/13

Interview invite here as well. First one of this cycle so here's hoping more roll in. OOS 30/3.9GPA.

Anyone else interviewing Nov 14th? :-D

Hi,

I'm interviewing on 11/21. I sent my secondary on 9/26 and was invited on 10/13. Those interview dates fill up quick!

So does anyone else know if they're going to be announcing acceptances this saturday or sunday? My admissions review is complete and I'm anxious to find out their decision...

For those who received an invite and attended, what documentation is needed? The email reads,
"You must bring a state driver's license, voter's registration card, and valid passport or greencard."

I'm a reading this correctly in that I need 3 forms of ID? If so, I do not have a voter's registration card because the city in which I live has moved the city council district line multiple times (apparently my apartment is right on the line). I thew out my cards because they were not valid.

Thanks!

you need to bring all 3 to the interview. if you don't have a voter's registration card, odalys will tell you to send them a copy post-interview. i'd suggest emailing them in advance, just to give them a heads up. i had to scramble to get my voter's registration card. good luck!
