3.The College of Medicine-Phoenix is committed to a dynamic, collaborative, safe learning environment that appreciates the diverse talents, experiences, opinions and backgrounds of all students. Share any unique or challenging factors in your background, such as quality of your primary (K-12) education environment, socio-economic status, culture (i.e. tradition, language), race, ethnicity, and life and work experience.
I fail to see the problem with the prompt. The bolded specifically mentions life and work experience. I'm in the same boat as you guys, and it sounds like the generic diversity essay will work fine if you have nothing else

Can someone who is familiar with the school/curriculum speak to the reference on the UACOM-Phoenix website about "The first two years of medical school are assessed and graded on a Pass or Fail system and strictly adhere to a Student Honor Code system, which provides total student anonymity with peers and faculty. "?

I know that at some schools that they are truly only pass/fail with no real ranking (i.e. Columbia), but most schools that are "anonymous" really do rank you.

Any clarification would be hugely helpful as I compose these secondary essays. Thanks.

I know for a fact that at least one of the UAs is NOT rank-free. They keep the ranks locked up in a filing cabinet. Lol the school actually spent a good 60 seconds on the physical security of the filing cabinet, and how no one would break in. That was when my impression of the school started going downhill. I'm pretty sure it is Phoenix that does this. But I bet that they both do.

Still waiting for a secondary here! I was hoping to get it this morning: got to see my fam from Phoenix over the weekend and I got more excited to pursue this school. :xf:

So interestingly enough it seems that they are targeting OOS students first from what I can tell. Interesting indeed.

no secondary either, i'm instate

I just received the secondary, and I'm an in state applicant.

I'm not sure it's that simple. I haven't received one and I'm OOS, and from the posts above it seems some IS have not yet received either.

I received a secondary today as well (OOS). Does anybody know what % of applicants they offer secondaries to and/or what % of completed secondaries end up with interviews?

So the original email said "your application is being reviewed by our Admissions Committee for a secondary application invitation." Does this mean that they screen the primary or do most get secondaries?

That's right- they screen. From what I know, I think it is a pretty thorough screen.

Could someone tell me where to print off the signature verification page that must be sent in after submitting the secondary? I can't find it...

Is the fee 75$ like it was for UA Tucson?

Thanks!

Did anyone else have technical problems with this secondary? I get an error message every time I try to save my essay responses. I've tried it in several browsers with no luck...

Edit: Nevermind, I called them and then later figured it out. If anyone has this issue, REMOVE THE APOSTROPHES from your essays :\

Once you hit "Submit" it takes you to a page with a link to the form.

Phew - just got the secondary - IS applicant. I was starting to get nervous 😉

Same here. Got it this morning. Some great questions and I'm liking how the essays are turning out 😀. Hope we all hear good news from them :luck:

In the school website, it says that around 1000 got secondary (from around 2000 initial applicant) and 160 of those got interviews.

just got a secondary too...lol love the wording in their e-mail "excited by what we have read thus far in your AMCAS application"

on the criminal conviction I know it says misdemeanors and felonies are criminal convictions but not counting minor traffic violations does that include traffic violations that are misdemeanors (since i have 2 speeding tickets in AZ that are misdemeanors) lol...hate this stupid traffic ticket misdemeanor s***

I know!!! It makes it sound like they're only giving out secondaries to select applicants 🙂 And it seems like that's what they're doing, according they're stats.

I don't think so. I've never written about my traffic tickets the past two years. Seriously, who cares if you get traffic tickets? The admissions dean probably has more than us two combined 😱

I called them to ask about this (except my misdemeanor speeding ticket was from NV). The lady told me first to not include it, but then I said something about how I listed it on AMCAS, and she said that I should include it. You might want to call about it since yours were in AZ though... The admissions office is really nice. I called twice with questions about the secondary

Overall, she said that speeding tickets are really benign

i know thats not usually what they are looking for with the CBCs its more the honesty i care about i will definitely call them up first thing tomorrow to get it straightened out...if anything the guys from the amcas said anything criminal related can be stated before the CBC (when u apply to get ur CBC) and its the same as stating it on the amcas im sure they would only be mad if u didnt say anything and had a DUI or something like that

Doesn't make sense how only 160 get interviews considering their goal is to admit 120 first years…

PS I decided to complete the secondary after all haha. Their email was way too nice to pass on the secondary.

The woman I spoke with on the phone and through email was incredibly nice. I liked the wording in the secondary invite email as well!

I'm referring to OOS only

spent so much time putting the essays together, and when I clicked on save it took me back to the login session without saving any of my work 🙁 doesn't work very well on Mac.

That's awful. I remember that happening to me too. Seriously thought about withdrawing the application😛

most of the content was from other essays I had written before, which i have saved on my computer. but it is still annoying. i better compose the essays on a text editor, and when it is all done, just paste into the boxes and save.

Exactly. Never write in the application pages. Just write the prompts and save it in MSword, then write your essay in it (you can check for character/word counts so thats a plus)

Re-using some essays from UA-Tucson for this school...thoughts?

You should be fine. The admissions offices are separate and each school has its own secondary.

Sorry I'm late in answering this - MS3 is quite busy! UACOM-Phoenix is P/F and rank-free in the first two years. I believe (though I'm not completely sure if it is still this way) that Tucson is P/F but ranks students - Phoenix does not. I hope this clears that up. I'll try and poke my head in more often to answer these types of questions, as it seems my buddy Shep is falling down on his SDN responsibilities. 😉

I suppose I should add that the possibility of adding AOA at our school was brought up during my MS1 year, and the students voted it down, as we did not want to lose the P/F rank-free awesomeness that makes our atmosphere so supportive and friendly and promotes camaraderie among students. We talked about other ways to determine AOA, but ultimately we decided it was not something we wanted.

Do you need class rank to have AOA at a school?

Any word on whether they are adding more seats for next years class?

They are planning on it. I went to a premed event and they said they planned to have around 80 seats. I haven't heard the exact number confirmed but it seems like it's going to happen.

For anyone else cutting and pasting text into the secondary, add semicolon to the list of punctuation that is not accepted 👎

Question: has anyone received a 'complete' email yet?

Do you need class rank to have AOA at a school?

Depends on the school - other factors can weigh into it, but typically it is the top certain percentage of a class as measured by academic standing. When we discussed adding AOA, we talked about measuring a student's success by other things such as community service and involvement in school programs, but ultimately we decided each of those things (including academic performance through 3rd year grades and Step scores) would stand for themselves and didn't need the extra AOA label.

I actually tried just typing all of the characters that appeared in my essay by themselves, one by one, in the essay box and attempting to save. I thought the semicolon was causing me issues, but I was able to submit my application with the semicolons in (and the app saved with nothing but a semicolon in the essay box). Who knows.
