Has anyone been to the interview yet? Did any of you guys go to the pre-meet up at the restaurant? I was wondering if you could let me know what attire i should bring. Was it casual or semi-formal? Thanks!

I think the first interview is 9/12, so no one's been to it yet. Just wear casual wear and be comfortable. I don't think jeans will be that much of a problem when it's just a welcome dinner. Just be neat 😎

+1
The email they sent with information on it stressed that it was casual. They send out a RSVP email about a week before your scheduled interview.

I'm trying to send in my secondary. Anybody else have this??

"Welcome

We are currently not accepting any secondary appplication[sic]."

Weird.

I submitted last week and it worked fine.

You got an email inviting you to complete the secondary?
And you are submitting within 30 days of that email?

I hope to see everyone at the night before mixer tomorrow

Unfortunately, I can't make mixer tonight. Will you share any useful information?

I'll see some of you tomorrow!

Best of luck to everyone interviewing tomorrow! This is such an amazing campus and we are all excited to have you! Enjoy the day! Welcome!🙂

The MMI format was fun and the school seems great. The new building is really exciting. The students seem very happy, and the Dean and faculty are willing to bend over backwards for them. I hope to get an acceptance on 10/17!!

A lot of great things to say about UA-Phoenix campus - Admissions is fantastic/innovative and Dean Flynn is a visionary. Flynn seemed to be in a good mood this morning, let's just hope Michigan keeps winning.

A few things I did not sign a non-disclosure agreement to share:
After the interview, admissions releases the completed files & interview data to one of 4, 3-person admissions committee members, which are separate from the administrators everyone meets on the interview day. Looks like there are 11 dates for acceptance letters before the waitlist. Here they are,

Oct 17 .... :xf:so you're telling me there's a chance?
Oct 24
Nov 7
Nov 21
Dec 5
Dec 19
Jan 2
Jan 30
Feb 6
Feb 20
Mar 2
Waitlist: Mar 2

Only 10-12 applicants will get an acceptance on each date. You're competing against the other people on your interview date ... so avoid being friendly. 72 will be competing for the first round. However, if you aren't accepted on the first date, you app is rolled over to the next round with the following interviewees and the pool gets larger.

Good Luck Everyone!

ppappui, thanks for getting my back.
Moosen, don't make me reveal your alternate alias.

I have to agree with Jimmer and Moosen. I was impressed with the school, the MMI interview was actually kinda fun! The time went by SO fast!!

:luck: Good luck to all who have already interviewed, and those who will be interviewing!

Great to hear some positive feedback about Phoenix interviews. Hope everyone did well on it. Can't wait till 9/26 for my interview (less than 2 weeks left; time really flies) Was seriously thinking about driving to Phoenix from LA, do the interview on Monday, and drive to New Orleans for another interview on Friday, but came back to senses lol. Can't imagine driving back 😱

But seriously they're only accepting 10-12 per date? That means they'll only accept ~120 for a class of 80! That's pretty low compared to other schools, which accept around twice the class size. Hope it means wait list is slightly less competitive

I also got that message. Did you figure it out yet? I just emailed them.

Yeah, I called in and they sorted it out for me. They were super friendly and helpful. If you don't get a response via email, I suggest you call in sometime in the afternoon.

Good luck to those interviewing tomorrow! I'll be there the 26th so if anyone's coming that day, PM me 😎
Also, just as a side-question, there are no right/wrong answers in these MMI, correct? I'm studying some situations (especially the ethics one) and was wondering if I provide an answer that goes against what the interviewer believes, that would cost me.

Once again, good luck to those interviewing tomorrow and those waiting for interview invites :luck:

Hi! I am scheduled for an interview at Phoenix on 11/7. Is there anyone else from the Los Angeles area who is scheduled for the same date and wants to carpool?

After pouring over SDN posts plus a few quick google searches, I am unable to conclude whether SPLC (Scholarly Project Learning Curriculum) is mandatory for COM-PHX students? In other words, should one be accepted into Regular MD program at COM-PHX, is completion of a 4-yr research project expected from that student?

Yes it's mandatory, every student does a research project. It's not necessarily all four years (though I think ideally that's what they want) but you will have to do some sort of project here.

Has anyone received an interview here without having all of their LOR's submitted to AMCAS? I am still waiting on one and was trying to see if this may be keeping me from an II, ugh. If it helps anyone else in the same boat, I was able to get the Tucson II without all my letters - not sure how it works in Phoenix.

Thanks!

They told us somewhere between 10-15 would be accepted per release date. And just in case you are wondering: Last year they sent out a total of 101 acceptances to fill a class size of 48. I think they said that they expect the ratio of acceptances to matriculants to be approximately the same, maybe slightly less.

Anyone in SDN attending the mixer this Sunday for next week's interview? Hope to see you there 🙂

II this afternoon! OOS, got my complete email on Sept. 9
Congrats 👍

Heya,

Yeah, it is mandatory (sorry, I think you sent me a PM but I'm studying for my Internal Med shelf that is this Friday so I'll PM you back soon). To quickly answer your question - this is a difference between us and Tucson. Some people spread it out over a few years, others (like myself) knock it out in the summer after MS1. The SP is actually a reason I chose Phoenix - I figure, if you're trying to be competitive for residency programs you'll want research experience anyway, so why not attend a school where it is built into the curriculum? There are guidelines and assigned advisers and support to help you out, or you can go out on your own and find your own opportunities. But yeah, it's required.

The city of Phoenix and the school in general was great. The students were a lot of fun and helpful, and the MMI, believe it or not guys, was fun as many have said (I went in as a slight skeptic). Good luck to those interviewing soon!

For those of you who already interviewed, do you have any advice on convenient hotels/transportation?

Thanks! 🙂

That's so weird how the school pits you against the other people interviewing with you for the same seats. Doesn't seem like a pleasant atmosphere at all. What's the point of doing this?

It's easier for them

I HATED the MMI and thought it was a waste of time. I saw very little that could not be elicited from multiple single interview sessions like most schools participate in.

7 min is not enough time to explore some of the topics we were to discuss, nor was the information sufficient to make an informed decision.

Was not a fan.

Why is that weird? For every school you interview at you compete with the other students for the seats. If you are not accepted on a date, your app rolls into the pool for the next date. That sounds typical to me.

I'm pretty sure this is how every school does it. What do you think "rolling admissions" means? I at least appreciate UA-PHX is up front about all this BS, unlike SOME schools holding all their IS residents.

I'll also throw my hat in for not liking the MMI. I'd much prefer two faculty interviews, but what can ya do?

I didn't get a competitive feeling at the school at all. I suppose that at the end of the day, we were all competing against one another, but my group was pretty friendly and easy going.

I just meant it's weird how you compete against people who interviewed the same day. Thats all. But ya, it's still better than what Tucson did to a lot of us today. Random hold is random.

After interviewing a few schools (not Tucson...yet...like many others it seems), I find Phoenix to be a really good fit. I like the energy of the campus, forward-thinking, newness mixed with results from the graduating class, etc.

Is it appropriate/accepted/impactful to send a letter of intent?

Pessimistic applicant is pessimistic.

If by pessimistic you mean realistic... Then yes, realistic applicant is realistic. UA Tucson doesn't exactly have very many people who think it's their top choice. October 15th is just a few weeks away, and people are gonna be withdrawing their apps from "safety" schools in droves pretty soon. An interview is the only way the school could sway applicants and help them forget about all the school's problems like horrible board scores. But they have no interest in even letting us take a look at the lines. Lol it's not like schools bend over backwards to invite someone to interview. Some cheap sandwiches and volunteering med students is about all it takes. The school has such little interest in the people on hold that they couldn't just entertain us and follow through with their word about interview invites.

Whatever. I love the Phoenix program tho! The 2 schools are separate, and I have very different views on them. Maybe I'll be proven wrong about Tucson. But the wording, timing, and all around circumstances of the situation don't make me very hopeful.

I liked my interview at UofA-Phx very much...this is an excellent school that is on a steep upward climb.

OOS flying in on 10/30 for the 10/31 interview. I reserved a hotel for both nights near the airport and snagged a rental car so if anyone needs a place to crash and ride to the interview just shoot me a pm and I will get you the info.

I REALLY love that idea actually. If feels like high school again and it almost becomes a popularity contest. It allows social people to pull ahead.

Just went to the student mixer tonight and the people are amazing! The MS1 and MS2 students who hosted us were incredibly nice, supportive, informative, and everything positive that you can expect. Will keep this thread updated after my interview tomorrow 😎
