What's the screening process? Just by numbers or do they actually look at your application?

Interviewed 10/3,I imagine that they review your entire application prior to granting an interview. Not certain about the secondary screening. UCI is an amazing program that is constantly striving to improve!

awesome! could you elaborate on what you liked about the interview day and what you were told about the program? thanks, and best of luck!

There were some topics which they could elaborated upon in the some of the presentations. I felt that they could have explained more about the curriculum and the ultrasound initiative. The ultrasound technology seems like a good tool and is representative of how UCI is being proactive in improving the quality of health care and I felt they could have highlighted more. Everyone was extremely nice and the interview was very low stress and conversational. The area is very nice and the facilities are definitely top notch. Good Luck!

do you mind sharing your stats? IS or OOS? Thanks much.

If you get accepted and go to revisit day, they'll let you know all about the ultrasound initiative (and the iPads of course) 🙂. We're one of the few (if not the only) school that has ultrasound integrated throughout all 4 years of med school. Ultrasound has a lot of uses (not just in OBGYN, but in all the specialities), is cheap to perform (compared to a CT scan or something), and doesn't have the radiation exposure risks. Most doctors aren't really trained well to do ultrasound, and they say we'll be more highly trained than the ultrasound techs. And as medical students, we'll have a very useful skill when we're out on the wards. I've only been in school for 2 months or so, but we've already had our first ultrasound session, which was a lot of fun. We'll be starting it up again once we begin Anatomy in a month. It's one thing to explore anatomy on a cadaver, and another thing to see the anatomy in a living person. The school actually put an ultrasound machine in the student lounge so that the students can practice on each other anytime.

As for the curriculum, it's on a block schedule (I've attached the curriculum overview). It's mostly traditional lectures (which I prefer), but we have small-group learning almost once a week. All of the lectures are podcasted, so class is pretty much optional. First year is Pass/Fail and second/third/fourth years are Honors/Pass/Fail. Trust me, don't go to a school with the traditional A/B/C, etc system! Also, they give us 2 months off after 2nd year to study for Step 1 (which is very generous compared to other schools).

We have a "Clinical Foundations" class throughout the four years to teach you clinical skills and how to interact with patients. So far, we've been learning with standardized patients (actors), but they have preceptorships where you can work with real patients. I really like the class, it's a nice break from the sciences. We've been learning how to take a medical history, and soon we'll be starting the physical examination.

Hope this helps! 🙂

I wanted to shed a little insight into the selections process so that everyone can rest easier & perhaps interpret the status messages from the application website in a more meaningful light.

UCI SOM receives somewhere in the neighborhood of 5200-5600 primary applications per year. There is a computerized numbers-based screen that invites approximately 2000 applicants to complete secondaries. The admissions staff then goes though the 3000+ apps that didn't get through the computerized screen by hand and selects about 500 of them to complete secondaries.

All in all, between 2500-2600 applicants are invited to fill out a secondary. Each of these applications is reviewed in full by at least 2 members of the admissions committee--though not necessarily at the same time. Once reviewed, a decision is made either to immediately advance to interview, to be put on a 'possible' interview list, or to deny an interview. By the end of the interview season in April, roughly 500-slightly over 600 people have been interviewed.

In the end, about 250 applicants are accepted and 104 matriculate.

I hope this helps you make a little more sense out of the process. Hit me up if you have any more questions!

Maybe they're loading those acceptances!

Although it might not be until November for UCI? I should take notes during interviews...

submitted primary 8/2, marked received by irvine 9/19, no secondary yet

35S, 3.3 gpa, 3.2 sci gpa, CA

I hope they're loading acceptances although I do recall them saying November as well, and that Dr. Peterson would be making personal calls. My stats are MCAT 34, GPA-3.4.

Hey guys, I'm currently doing the secondary and was wondering for the activities section, do you just enter the name of the activity? Is there supposed to be any attempt at a description?

Just got an II! I'm pretty excited because my status had been at the "initial review is complete" stage for more than a month and I was pretty sure I was on some kind of hold. So for all of you still waiting for an II, there is hope! 🙂

Good luck!!

Congrats! I'm still stuck at "initial review complete." 🙁

Thanks! I'm sitting on a couple waitlists too! (Can't decide yet if this is good...)

Needless to say this application cycle is going a little better than last year's.

The fact that you're already accepted makes that unquestionable. 🙂 I'm super happy for you. Now if you could send some of that luck my way, that'd be awesome! I've got my fingers crossed that UCI loves me!

Good luck! I'm sure you'll do great!

Btw we should catch up some time. You still in Davis?

anyone know if they have decided on p/f or not? When I interviewed they said administration was still debating and that'd it be 50/50 chance of keeping the p/f grading system

hey do you mind sharing when your application was complete and marked "under review"?

No problem. I was complete 9/8, and I'm not sure when exactly I got this status but it was sometime between 10/17 and 10/20.

complete early august, under review since then...

can everyone here click on "interview instructions"? because that document sounds like you already got an interview.

Yup. I have been able to click on the "Interview Instructions" doc ever since I submitted my secondary, so I don't think it means much.

:luck: to you though!

Does anyone remember the first date of acceptances for the round of interviews on October 3? It's November 3, right?

Really looking forward to the call! 😀

there's not really any debate going on. The admin are going to do whatever they want to do regardless of the opinions of the students. They've been pushing back ever since it was changed and they are slowly bringing it back to H/P/F for all four years.

Although it might not be until November for UCI? I should take notes during interviews...

I interviewed 9/20. I remember them saying something about letting us know sometime around October 15th (similar to UCSD). October 16th, i got my waitlist notification from SD, but I have still heard nothing from UCI.

Anyone have any input?

I was in the 9/20 group as well, and remember them saying October 15th (but by the end of October at the latest) so it should be any day now!

Based on interview day, and reading past threads, Admissions uploads waitlists only to the applicant status page. In the past two years' threads, it seems that waitlist decision usually appear around 10/21 for the folks in the first interview group. There is nothing this year, yet, about waitlists on SDN, so I assume that they haven't made waitlists decisions yet.*

In other words, I think you'll have to check your applicant status page for any news at this point.

*Yes, I know SDN isn't a truly accurate representation of the whole med school applicant population, but usually we do hear about stuff here first.

Interview Invite today!

If anyone is interested, they offered me two dates in November, one date in December, and two dates in January. Good luck to everyone. 👍

Congrats! Do you know approximately how long you had "Initial Review Complete" status?

Do you mind sharing your stats? Thanks I have been under review since Aug. Thanks

So . . . has anyone from the 09/20 group heard anything about decisions? Waitlists?

The silence on this forum is eerie. 😉

Hey ya'll. I'm OOS and have received an II on Nov 14th. 32 MCAT, 3.6 cGPA/3.4 sGPA from the University of Michigan. What do you think my chances are?

so... for those that interviewed and not interviewed... do you guys have a student ID number on the status page?

and also the activate your UCInetID link.

so before.. when i went to the link i tried a few times but it wouldn't let me register a UCInetID account.. this was a few days ago... but now it let's me register and I interviewed in sept.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?!?! 😱 :xf:
