I do have strong letters of recommendations, extensive clinical experience (HELP program and CNA), some leadership experience as a student committee chair for the Phi Beta Kappa chapter at FSU and as a TA and tutor for biology. My personal statement is also well-written. I have already been accepted at FSU COM and interviewed last Friday at UCF.

With all that, I think UF is just looking at numbers. It seems like all applicants who interviewed and had their file complete around the same time I completed mine have 32+ MCAT range.

it's UF, not UMich.

The difference between "32+" and 31 is small as well. I mean, I got a little above UF's average on the MCAT, but I'm sure I could've gotten anywhere between 30-35 depending on the passages, the weather, whatever.

The whole process is a crap shoot. The speed with which schools get back to you on your app is not necessarily reflective of your competitiveness. The process is filled with randomness by its very nature. It's important to not take silence from a school personally and to stay patient.

I know that my MCAT score is about average, so I am really hoping that they consider my high GPA. It seems like UF cares less about GPA, though.

Darn, I have a 30 MCAT and 4.0 gpa, I was hoping the gpa would give me a boost.

I dunno about that. The GPA at most FL med schools is inflated.

Hey guys. Due to some crap tacos I didn't get complete status until November 1st at UF, is it pointless to still hope for an II?

No, I would not say that it is pointless. I have a friend that applied as late as possible and he still got in. He had similar stats, too.

To all recent interviewees: Any political/ethical questions asked??

I think it depends on your essays and application. Overall, most people found the interview time to be rather relaxed. Mine was a bit more intense, but I think it's because I'm an older student who has had quite a variety of jobs. I'm pretty involved in the community as well. Hence, because of my background, I should be able to handle some complex questions about business and healthcare. I actually did have questions about our political system and current events. Most of these questions were based on what I put on my application. So, know your application and why you wrote certain things.

I had a ton of ethical and behavioral type questions in both my interviews. One seemed almost completely to be hypothetical situations and how I would respond to them. I don't think I had any "political" questions.

Interviewed last friday...pretty laid back experience. Anyways, ive been volunteering with hospice once every 2 weeks for about a month now...is this worth submitting to UF??
thanks!😀

Once every two weeks for about a month is at most what, three times? The committee might construe that as trivial. Might want to do a bit more before you report that. Also, what are you doing there? Are you in a leadership role, or are you just a standard "patient/family" volunteer? That's important as well.

Has anyone from the 12/2 interview date heard anything from admissions yet? They said they were shooting for yesterday, but they have been about a day late each time, looking through this thread... I'm starting to get really nervous!

Ya, I've been wondering the same thing. I think it might be one of those things where the holidays got in the way. Most schools are out this week and next, so I have a feeling it may be a little bit longer for them to get back to us. It would be awesome to hear back from them before the holiday week, but alas, such is life.

Not sure how often uf interviews, but i interviewed 12/16 and i believe i was told that my interview group would be reviewed along with the previous interview group...and that jan 10 would be the big day

I did hear back! Interviewed 12/2. Accepted. Pretty awesome! 🙂

Congrats! Did they call you or did you get an email? Now I'm really nervous! haha

It was an email. But I know someone else from the group that found out by logging onto the secondary application portal. If you log on there, and see the "Accepted Applicant" link, then I think, you're in. There's some previous posts that indicated that was one of the ways applicants found out they were accepted.

Again, I imagine it's taking them time to get through them all. If you don't hear anything today, I'd follow up after the first of the year. Hang in there and good luck! 🙂

Does anybody know anything about what UF's curriculum will be like next year? I think I remember hearing on interview day that major changes are planned, but I don't have any specifics.

I was wondering the same thing. How Dr. Lynch was talking about it made it seem more like the Mayo Clinic's curriculum, where there's a lot more patient interaction when you go through the various system blocks. I remember the new UF curriculum map being very colorful like the Mayo one (http://www.mayo.edu/mms/md-curriculum.html).

To me, a change like this would make sense, just because the school is in the middle of one of the best known hospitals in Florida. I can only imagine that they have a wealth of opportunities to make a curriculum like this work.

However, this is my best guess. If anyone comes across any information, please post it. Thanks!

Found a package from UF COM today in the mail, as in an actual box of stuff...don't want to spoil it for any other accepted people, but it was a nice gift! 👍

I got it too! I thought it was a really nice gesture. It's nice to feel a little welcomed 🙂

Hey are there any MS3 or MS4 students following this thread? If so, I would love to ask you a bunch of questions about your clerkship experiences.

Thanks!

Yeh, i second that, for starters i wonder if getting hands-on experience is an issue...

Did anybody during the interview day request that we send them our fall semester grades? I left all of my interview day notes at my apartment, and now I'm home for the holidays... Thanks!

I don't remember them mentioning that on my interview day and none of the literature they have sent us since state that. I think you have to send them your final transcripts in the spring or upon graduation. I would still contact their office to double check.

sooooo this is probably kinda early since the class hasnt even fully filled up yet.... but for those who are going to uf, does anyone know the best places to live?

i went up to gville last wknd and checked out the "med school ghetto" but are there any other apt complexes within walking distance from shands? or where do most med students live if they wanna live close and not drive everyday? i already stalked previous threads but nowhere does it have names of good apt/condo communities where most med students live within walking dist.

also is anyone looking for roomates yet? i know most med students prefer to live alone, but im a pretty social person and feel better living with another med student (female) so lemme know 🙂

AND ANY INPUT on living situations would be amazinggggg!!

Its 01/09 😱...anyone else crossing their fingers for tomorrow?? Does anyone anyone have an idea how the "hold" status works? (Just curious...but hopefully it doesn't come to that :xf:)

Does anyone know how far through the admissions process UF is so far? Are they still sending out interview invites?

I have a feeling that they won't notify people until tomorrow, that seems to be the trend throughout the thread is meet on Tuesday tell the anxiously waiting people Wednesday. Good Luck! :luck:

Last time I talked to the admissions office, I heard that they still have around 8 interview days left.

ACCEPTED! Got a nice phone call! But I think they're doing a lot of communication tomorrow, so if you're supposed to hear something from today's meeting and haven't yet, don't worry just yet! Good luck!!!!!

CONGRATS!! I finally got around to joining the Alumni Association today, haha. I doubt they will see it, much less count it for anything. Bummer.

Woww...Accepted! ; )
(Today via email)

I didn't get an email today... I guess I did not get in? 🙁

Yeah same here. Idk if they are behind or if I should take it for bad news

No. I would take it as simply no news. The email I received was from the lady who interviewed me...i have not been officially notified either. Good luck

That clarifies a lot, Thanks!!! I remember Leila saying that they give your interviewers some time to let you know.

So, Bluepanda was yours also from your interviewer?

- Does anyone have insight into the quality of the clinical rotations at UF? 😕 (I would like to compare/contrast it with the "regional-campus experience" at FSU)
- I have been told that at UF you will be the "guy in the corner" 👎 and at FSU you will be first assist with the attending 👍.... But I have trouble believing that UF (not to mention the students) would be content with such a scenario...:eyebrow:
- Any information will be greatly appreciated! 😉

Mine was a strange situation, so the person I heard from wasn't my interviewer. However, if I'm remembering correctly from the morning session, Leila said it could even be Thursday or Friday. I agree with the "no news is no news" comment. Keep us posted; we're rooting for you!

For the most part, it's not about who you have as an attending (with some notable exceptions), it's about how proactive you are in seeking out procedures/involvement. If a patient needs an LP, ask the resident if they wouldn't mind if you tried doing it (with supervision, obviously). For example, at our student run free clinic, we had a patient who had to have something removed from their skin. I asked the resident if I could assist, and the resident pretty much guided me through the process. It is what you make of it.

I can't speak to the regional experience at FSU but UF is a tertiary care facility with a level I trauma center and a large organ transplantation unit. Essentially, you're seeing a combo of both bread and butter cases and patients who are (for the most part) referred or transferred to UF for diagnosis/treatment of rare conditions or conditions that require specialized equipment or personnel.

Hope that helps.

I got an e-mail and was waitlisted. I figured this would happen with the way my second interviewer was because they definitely did not help my cause with how they interviewed. Guess I was hoping others things in my app would be more important. Anybody know what you can do to expedite the waitlisted process at UF?

im waitlisted also and i thought i had a good interview. my drawback is my 1st mcat score, which is very low compared to my 2nd score. crossing my fingers that this "waitlist" will turn to a "yes"...still, it's better than a rejection.
