For the most part, it's not about who you have as an attending (with some notable exceptions), it's about how proactive you are in seeking out procedures/involvement. If a patient needs an LP, ask the resident if they wouldn't mind if you tried doing it (with supervision, obviously). For example, at our student run free clinic, we had a patient who had to have something removed from their skin. I asked the resident if I could assist, and the resident pretty much guided me through the process. It is what you make of it.

I can't speak to the regional experience at FSU but UF is a tertiary care facility with a level I trauma center and a large organ transplantation unit. Essentially, you're seeing a combo of both bread and butter cases and patients who are (for the most part) referred or transferred to UF for diagnosis/treatment of rare conditions or conditions that require specialized equipment or personnel.

Hope that helps.

-Wow, thank you, I really appreciate you taking the time to address my question! 😉
-I spoke to a few other upperclassmen and they really seemed to share your sentiment 🙂
-Having done my homework (to which you contributed! thx again) I believe that UF will be the best fit for me! 😀

Glad I could help. Let me know if you have any more questions that I might be able to answer (I obviously can only really speak to the pre-clinical years, but I can usually ask upperclass friends for their input).

Have you heard anything about the curriculum changes planned for the incoming class? They talked bout changes but we didn't get anything specific.

To be honest, I don't know what they're going to do for the new curriculum. I just know they're trying to integrate more of the lectures together, instead of the traditional curriculum that I'm going through. For instance, instead of classes like Pharmacology, Systemic Pathology, Micro, etc., it would be more "here's the path, pharm, micro, etc. of the cardiovascular system). That's pretty much all I know.

If I had to guess, I'd wager that most of the lecturers wouldn't change much of their material, but that they would try to just change the schedule of classes around. Don't quote me on that, though.

Hi everyone wondering if there are any UF undergraduates who've interviewed who can give me some clarity here... I went to UF undergrad and while I looved the student body (and winning all those titles) I was never impressed by the admissions/advisory staff at UF. I have always found their administration to be extremely cold and care only about scores and stats. I went up to tour the medical school and was very put off by the reception as well. Overheard the admissions staff person complaining about having to take me on a tour because his medical student ambassador didn't show up and then gave me a completely rushed and impersonal tour and said "I'm not sure, why don't you email me that question" to every single one of my verrrry basic questions after I drove 3 hours for this 10 minute tour. I have been invited for an interview and and debating about accepting it? I'm hoping you'll tell me I just caught them on a bad day and you've seen them be very welcoming (as opposed to undergrad staff) but would appreciate an honest answer. Thank you in advance!!

Wow never thought I would get flooded with so many PM responses for one question! So incredibly disappointed to hear this has been everyone's experience as well, and that not one single person who responded got a kind or welcoming word until AFTER they were invited for an interview or accepted. I appreciate all the responses and may take everyone's advice and at least attend the interview day but I will certainly remember to take their welcoming words with a grain of salt. Thank you all for your honesty i sincerely appreciate it and good luck to everyone!!

If you have reservations, you can always recommend AnthroMD's application for your interview invite!

When were you complete?

I went to UF undergrad, too, and would love the opportunity to come back!!

I can only speak for the interview day itself, but I thought it was the most well thought out and friendly interview day I've had (I've had 8 interview invitations). Before interviewing there, UF was not at the top of my list of schools bc I wasn't familiar with the area or the school, but I was completely won over. I've been accepted there and have stop taking interviews since being accepted. It was an amazing experience and I wouldn't pass it up if I were you. I think you'll see what I'm saying if you attend. Have you had any other Florida interviews?

Could not have said it better myself. I was also luke-warm going in coz I'd never been to Gainesville, and Tebow was the only thing I knew about UF...lol...but after meeting Dr Lynch, and his team of very dedicated and beyond-helpful team in the admissions process, I immediately withdrew from my USF interview (acceptance at Miami helped). After I was accepted 12 days post-interview, I got by far the most personal and uplifting call from one of my physician interviewers. I'm completely won over by UF and what the philosophy of the med school is. Listen to Chasonian and embellish your interview day!!

so you're going to pick UF over Miami, right? 🙂

Correct me if I am wrong, but you are upset that they didn't give you a private tour when they were busy with their own jobs at the time? Also, if you were invited to interview, they would give you a tour there (and with med students who would be able to answer questions). Why didn't you just wait until the interview day?

I had a similar experience. Three years ago, I was sitting on an airplane next to a girl who's boyfriend was a UF medical student. She only shared horror stories of things that happened to her boyfriend. Originally, I had planned to make UF the only FL school I didn't apply to, but my gut told me that I should give it a shot. I was totally blown away by their interview day and the people I've spoken with since. Since acceptance, I feel like the faculty and staff have gone out of their way to make me feel welcome. It sounds like the school has made some great changes (pass/fail), and I think the new Dean of Admissions and curriculum revisions will only continue the great things happening there.

I, too, have stopped attending interviews and withdrew my application from all other schools. I even bought a pair of jorts (kidding).

See you all in August. 🙂

I said it elsewhere and I'll say it again...it's all 'Jerry Maguire' stunting from here on out...a.k.a. 'Show me the monneeeyyy!'...It's all about those sweet financial aid packages for some of us poor souls! Ya' digg?

+1

my interviews were the most comfortable at UF and I was impressed by the structure and quality of education the administration is creating there. UF was not the top of my list due to G'ville but the medical school is very very impressive.

PS: Im 99% sure I am choosing UF now post-interview.

I was also skeptical after growing up in Gainesville and hearing some questionable things. However, the interview day was really great, and the new deans/faculty are really amazing. Gainesville is what you make of it....best for people who can enjoy the natural parts of the area like the springs, etc.

Also, @Pepper MD, you're lucky you got any kind of tour. I thought most med schools didn't give tours unless you were on an interview.

Exactly my thoughts.

Admissions is insanely busy as it is. Now they're supposed to drop everything and give private tours to students not on their interview days?

Thank you so much for writing back! That's great to hear that you and some others on this board have had pleasant experiences. I was a bit terrified when I only got negative responses when I was certainly hoping to hear the opposite. I've had four other FL interviews and two acceptances here and several other interviews up north. I really appreciate all the feedback and like I said I was in love with my undergrad experience at UF I had just never been fond of my experience with the administration there so I never meant anything negative about UF, I'll always sport my gator gear 🙂 Thanks again everyone!

It's actually very standard practice for the admissions department to offer tours to prospective students before interview invites, it is in fact part of their job and not something to distract them from being "busy with their own jobs." I'm actually very surprised to hear some of you did not tour the schools before applying. When I called to get information about different schools almost all of them offered to provide a tour without me even asking, most saying they do several a day except on actual interview days. I don't really see the harm in trying to get a feel for a school before they offer you an interview and FL schools aside actually saved hundreds of dollars in application fees by realizing I the area a school was in just wasn't a good fit for me. In the case of UF I had called to ask a few specific questions and they offered to show me around with a student ambassador for 45-1hr and scheduled a tour for me. I in no way simply showed up and expected them to drop everything to appease me. When I arrived I literally overheard one of the admissions staff complaining about dealing with "anyone under 30 asking questions about the school" and then took me around for 10 mins without answering almost any of my questions, so yes I was a bit off.

Yea, I was just asking about other FL interviews bc I've interviewed at most of them and UF just blew the rest of them away when it comes to showing how much the school cares about the student and how they are committed to educating future doctors that are going to always put the patient first when it comes to decision making.

It's funny because the interview day is 8 hours...so early in the morning on the day of my interview, I was looking at the schedule and I was thinking to myself, "OMG!! 8 freaking hours!!" I was really, really tired from traveling and studying, but by the end of the day I had made my decision to go there if I was accepted....

Haha that's exactly what I was thinking when she said it went until 5! I'm really glad to hear it was such a great experience and that you left with such a good feeling about the school. I hope I have an equally enjoyable interview day! Good luck with everything and thanks so much for the feedback!

Hi everyone! Quick question here, does UF COM teach to the boards (Step 1). For example, are the course exams structured similar to the USMLE 1 (I'm quite ok with that)? Thank you!

3.809 GPA (above 3.8 BCPM), 32O MCAT, in state, lots of extracurriculars, still no love from UF. Interview please? =)

Interview Invite today!!!!!!!!!! Scheduled for Feb 3. So soon! Both excited and nervous. My first interview.🙂

Congrats!! I had 5 days notice for one of mine. When were you complete?

Congratulations! Was it by e-mail or telephone? And from whom did you hear?

I submitted around then, too. I got the complete email on 12/21. Did you have all of your letters in, including both peer letters? My last peer letter came in a couple of days before the deadline so I'm not sure if I was fully "complete" until a couple of weeks ago.

I have an OOS interview on Feb 2 but I'm still waiting on an II from any FL schools. Hoping to at least get some love from my alma mater!

Maybe I need to send them a mixtape of me singing Alma Mater 😆:

Florida, our Alma Mater,
thy glorious name we praise.
All thy loyal sons and daughters,
a joyous song shall raise.
Where palm and pine are blowing,
where southern seas are flowing,
Shine forth thy noble gothic walls,
thy lovely vine clad halls.
Neath the orange and blue victorious,
our love shall never fail.
There's no other name so glorious,
all hail, Florida, hail!

Thank you!=) I wasn't complete until December 28.

I submitted on 12/20 and was missing one LOR. Received the complete email on 12/28 after the last LOR arrived. This is the only Florida school I have heard back from. I hope you receive something soon!:xf:

Hey,
I am somewhat of a non-traditional applicant. I have been working with computers/programming the last two years. Congrats on your acceptance!

Does anyone know what happens after being waitlisted way back in October? Do they ever revisit these applicants?

Did everyone get that email status update from UF just now? Lol doesn't seem too promising...

Has UF rejected anyone pre-interview?

I got it as well. Unfortunately, I don't think there is much substance to it. I went ahead and edited my last update though. I actually saw that I put "UM" as a typo once where I meant "UF". Hope they didn't/don't hold that against me . :xf::xf:

Got it too. I saw UF in the subject heading and then opened the email...such a let down.

I got the same email. At least it is better than just a few or no interview dates left, ya know? Sending along an update now..I can't remember if I sent them one after submitting my app, but I suppose there is no harm in restating my recent acceptance for a first-author publication, or telling them that I am currently writing another manuscript so I will hopefully have 2 first-author pubs before interviewing.

Praying for all of us!!

So everyone got that little update, eh? Any idea how many of those went out?
