What a PENNoply of responses I've woken up to....

Waitlisted. If the number coming off of it is around right, and if it isn't tiered (I sort of hoped by accepting the waitlist spot they would tell me my tier) I'll probably drop out. Which is okay since I have somewhere else to go, but I'm sad I won't get to be in a class with you people. My emotions are swinging like a PENNdulum right now....

OMFG OMFG OMFG OMFG

ACCEPTED. OMFG DREAM COME TRUE. TIME TO BUY MYSELF A NICE BOTTLE OF WHISKEYY.

(sorry about the caps....too excited)

ACCEPTED!! Did anyone get scholarship info with their acceptance letter?

Waitlist for me!! It's cool I expected it. My performance at my interview at this school was not the best.

Ehombre can attest he probs remember how sad I was after 😛

I think I shall give up my wait list spot 🙂

ACCEPTED!! Did anyone get scholarship info with their acceptance letter?

I am also wondering this! They have about 20 full tuition scholarships from what I recall, which is enough to allow one to dream a little.

Yeah did anyone hear about the scholarships? When should we be hearing about those?

The Financial Aid Timeline says merit awards are made in April. Though if someone received an offer with their acceptance I would definitely be interested in hearing about it.

No news about scholarships for me either.

waitliisted as well...maybe same generic letter, but it has a goodbye tone =(

ACCEPTED !!!

Anybody have any idea with regard to the number of people who get a decent scholarship, say $15,000 or above? Full tuition is SCARY !!

ACCEPTED! More than thrilled and will almost certainly be attending...

Have they rejected anyone post-interview? It looks like SDNers have only been accepted or waitlisted.

First off, congrats to everyone who got in!

Second, there's a new Jameson (Black) if you like Irish whiskey. Just FYI.

I'd like to make a facebook group. If you're interested PM me. Thanks.

To answer merit aid questions, the financial aid timeline on the status page says we'll hear in April. Last year, people were notified between April 11 and 22 according to SDN

Oops nevermind, there is an official group. The link is on the acceptance page. Everyone join!

Does Penn reject post interview, trying to see if being on the waitlist even means anything besides a kiss of death

Did anyone who was waitlisted get any info about Penn Preview?

Yes, but it wasn't given to me. 😛 (We'll leave it at that...I would love to be invited though!)

So some people got Penn Preview info, implying there is a waitlist ranking??

No. The information is around for one to find but I don't think it would be a good idea to post how I found it (on the other hand, if someone from Penn admissions would like to contact me about it, feel free).

But, they didn't actually invite anyone from the waitlist?

Wait so some people did get invited for preview?

No, from what I can gather, I think the confusion comes from ywlke having discovered the Preview event information independently of any invitation. His/her post made it seem like someone he/she knows had gotten an invitation, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

In any event, it's not the Preview event information that people care about; people just want to know if the waitlist might be tiered. Current signs point to "no".

Thank you for clearing that up. His post confused many of us.

This is probably the wrong thread, but most of you who are applying might be able to help me out.

1. Does anyone know if UPenn accepts online credit for Biochemistry?
I have two options for the semester next fall:
a) take the lecture course (3 credit hours) from two professors, who I have heard REALLY DO NOT KNOW how to teach the material
b) take the online course, which someone told me is through a school in Ohio and incorporates an online lab (3 credit hours)
Also, I heard the online biochem course lasts for 7 weeks, but I do not know how true that is.

2. Does Biochemistry lab matter to admissions?
I do not plan on taking biochemistry lab because I have a jam-packed senior year. I am BME and planning to take a course called “Tools in Biomedical Research” however to fill my engineering elective requirements. From what past students told me, you learn how to do cell culturing, SDS-PAGE, ELISA, and even drug encapsulation.

If anyone knows about how the adcoms feel about either, please let me know because I could not find anything on their website or other threads.

Thanks!

I too would like to know this. It seems like everyone was just waitlisted so the chances of getting off are quite small...

I had the worst ****ing interview experience ever. I am surprised that I was not outright rejected.

Rejected from MSTP post-interview. Not sure if anyone that applied to the MD is on the same boat.

Does Penn reject post interview, trying to see if being on the waitlist even means anything besides a kiss of death

hmm doesn't look like any MD-only applicants were rejected post-interview. so while not a kiss of certain death, the wait list does appear to have an extremely high mortality rate.

This might be a stupid question... but are lectures video recorded and are powerpoint slides provided?

Edit: I just saw some sample lectures.

Again.... does anybody have an idea about how many people at PENN get decent money, like $15,000+ ??

Also, I heard they had like 20 full rides, but do they also give 1/2 rides, $20,000 a year, $10,000 a year and such?

Also, what is with "needs based" aid? My parents paid for undergrad, I'm on my own for this. We're all going to be Penn educated doctors when done, don't we all have the same ability to pay back loans?

I can't see how I get penalized because my parents have some money, but heck, they are done paying for me after dumping $150,000 over the last 4 years, and now have to save for retirement.

Because there are those that, even if their parents were willing to pay, still could not afford the school.

Re: need-based aid. Almost every school considers your parents income when awarding institutional aid. While all Penn graduates might have similar earnings potential upon entering school, worst comes to worse, a student with an affluent family is taking on much less risk because his parents, if affluent, should be able of providing some sort of safety net. A student from an affluent family is also less likely to need to take care of his parents financially later on.

These are just a couple thoughts off the top of my head, I'm sure there are other arguments for and also against need-based aid.

I fully agree with this. When you are a resident or attending, if your parents are well off, you probably will not have to pay for their care, health or otherwise. In terms of health, affluent parents probably have healthcare... and unless you live in the great state of Massachusetts where, thank God, everyone can receive care, you will be responsible for that care if your parents are poor. AND even if they are so poor AND live in Mass., poor families tend to have less access to preventative care just because of their work. I know many families that can't take time off to get a colonoscopy as recommended after the age of 50, because they have to work and cannot give up any money because they are already living paycheck to paycheck. Students with parents in these situations are likely to be on their own. Let's help them out.

Tying an immediate gift of financial aid to a subjective, distant future need is, in my view, ridiculous.

Medical schools think the family unit is an important place to measure wealth, and that unit doesn't all of a sudden dissolve when a student enters medical school. No one will force parents to contribute for their students education. If you think think the notion that a 25 year old with parents on welfare is in the same financial position as a 25 year old with billionaire parents, you are greatly mistaken.

Most students don't have either parents on welfare or billionaire parents, but it illustrates that 'ridiculous' is a very poor place to start the conversation.

You misunderstood. Decisions should be made with the financial figures at hand, not on an assumption years down the road. That is my point. I totally agree that a 25 year old's family finances should help determine their financial aid. I do not agree -and think it would be ridiculous if- the hypothetical financial burdens of that same student 15 years later (i.e. predicting the medical expenses of their parents) factored into their "need".

Sorry about diverging on this thread. I'm done.

I was waitlisted and invited to the preview, but I'm an MD/PhD applicant; it might be different for MD-only.

Does anyone know if families can come to Penn Preview?

How many people accepted at PENN are still waitlisted at PITT ??

As for Preview, last year wait listed students and accepted students came, so I can't see it being any different this year. We're in the process of planning some great events for it now.
