didn't you guys get suspicious when you didn't get an application complete email?

I think this was the second secondary I "completed," and the first one didn't send a complete email, so I wasn't really expecting one this time around. I just mentally checked it off and went onwards and upwards. Whoops?

So the interview invite comes with the additional essays which includes a brief description of your four most significant extracurricular/volunteer activities. For the first three I am using the 3 i marked as most significant on AMCAS. However, do you think it would be OK to add something not on AMCAS as my 4th most meaningful?

It's a job I had this summer and thus wasn't on AMCAS. Or should I just pick something from AMCAS and then include the summer job in an update letter?

I think it's fine to add this. They know your application isn't static! Use the essays and activity listing as things that you want to talk about in your interviews-- it is what the interviewers will see before meeting you.

oh makes sense
it's not too late though, good luck dude

Does anyone know how student hosting works? Am I supposed to pay the host for letting me stay? I'm trying to figure out my air travel and hotel situation in Rochester. Thanks!

Sorry to ask so many questions, I'm just really excited about interviewing here, haha: I'll be driving into Rochester the day before my interview to get acclimated, see a little bit of Rochester to see what the city is like. Would you guys have any recommendations as to what to see on the afternoon before the day of my interview? Would it be acceptable to scope out the hospital (read: find the Admissions Office), or is this something better suited to the morning of the interview, when I'm dressed professionally? Also, any recommendations for what to see in Rochester that could help me figure out whether Rochester/the medical school campus would be a good fit in terms of living there? I don't really have any doubts about this, but since I will have a few hours the day before to explore, I'd like to maximize my time as much as possible. Thanks a lot, guys! 😀

I unfortunately don't know how student hosting works, but the admissions people sent me a nice email with a list of hotels that offer a discounted "U of R Interview Rate". I got about 50 dollars off for my night's stay, ending up with a pretty decent price. So if student hosting fails, I'd say the hotels within a mile or two of the med school are definitely reasonably priced and conveniently located!

Student hosting is completely free.

The admissions office is really, really easy to find. If you are parking in the lot right in front of the School entrance off of Elmwood, you walk in the doors, hang a right into the Atrium, and the office is on the left with big lettering over it that says School of Medicine and Dentistry. The hospital is on the other side of the medical center and not something you should really be walking around without people knowing why you're there. If you want to look at close living options, you can drive/walk around the neighborhood directly behind the medical center (called the White Coat Area)... a lot of students/residents rent/buy these houses.

I'm flying out to Rochester on Wednesday! I can't wait! I'm so excited to tour this school and have the opportunity to interview. Maybe I'll see a few of you there...

You should check out downtown Rochester, which is very artsy. The Little theater, Spot Coffee, and Starry Night Cafe are great haunts. Park Ave. has some nice art galleries. Check out Eastman School of Music and see if you can hear a student recital. The classical music scene is HUGE there.

Edit: By the way, Rochester is a large, sprawling city and you pretty much have to drive 20 minutes to do ANYTHING from WHEREVER you are. But I love it. It is my hometown. :] I applied here also and am hoping for an interview.

What a great school!! The staff were very friendly and the students were fantastic!! If anyone has any questions about visiting please feel free to shoot me a message.

Ditto to the old man. The Rochester interview was awesome. Super laid back and friendly. Tons of med students were in and out all day throughout the interview. Everyone stopped to say hi and was extremely friendly. I would love an acceptance. Now the long wait til Oct. 15th...

Thanks for this post! I'll be heading over to Rochester tomorrow, I might check out of one of those places for lunch! I'm so excited to finally have my interview, it seems like for the most part they're conversational/chill as opposed to ethics-based/grilling. Ahhhh 😀

Youll have a great time! The students there made all of us feel really welcome. Try to hit up dinosaur BBQ while in Rochester, really good food!

I'm flying to Rochester a day early and I was hoping to explore the city a bit. I won't have a car, so how would you recommend that I do this? 🙂 Thanks

The bus sucks, but it is available. If you can rent a bike or zipcar from the UR campus, do that. Your best option, unless you just take the bus to downtown and walk around, is to rent. UR also has some shuttles that may go downtown and I think for a small fee non-students can take them.

Was that this year? I didnt get that email after II? Yeah, trying to figure out travel/sleeping options.

Anyone have any suggestions for the best way to get there from NYC?

I interviewed last week and I must recommend Magnolias down on park street, the pizza was awesome. Just sayin. Good luck with your interview! You'll love it. I did.

My interview is this week and I just found out the names of my interviewers. I'll be interviewed by. Dr. Fong and Dr. Asselin. Does anyone at U of R know of them?

Dr. Fong is a pediatric geneticist and also runs the first year class Molecules to Cells (biochem and genetics). He is a FANTASTIC guy who is loved by his medical students and patients. I never interviewed with him, but don't expect anything too stressful. He loves to chat and will be genuinely interested in who you are as a person.

I don't know Dr. Asselin.

Good luck 🙂

Thanks! And that's good to hear because he looks very serious in his picture on the website  But, you're the second student to tell me he's very nice.

Anyone else know Dr. Asselin?

My interviews went very well yesterday and both of my interviewers were incredibly nice and seemed to just want to have a conversation. Unfortunately, I have mixed feelings about the school. Students seemed uptight and not as happy as they were in some of the other schools that I've visited. Maybe I got the wrong impression.

Why do you think they are uptight? Meaning, what gives off that impression?

Wait, seriously? The med students I met were unanimously VERY chill and passionate about medicine. There were a bunch that just sat on the couches talking to applicants for an hour. They all seemed really happy, and said so themselves.

That's awesome to hear, maybe I just happened to meet a few that weren't that crazy about the school. Two on my tour didn't seem to care too much and left early. One I met the night before kept giving me a weird vibe and giving me ultimatums like "you'll only survive here if you're ____ kind of a person" "if you expect _____ to help you, you're in for a surprise." It was just very strange. One second year specifically told me that I should look elsewhere. I was really into the school and it was disappointing to hear so much negativity on my interview day, especially because I was really happy with my interviews. Glad to hear others had better experiences, because hopefully I just had bad luck.

Interesting. I haven't heard of interviewees having this sort of an experience, and I'm sorry you did. I'm a third year and can't think of anybody in my class who is upset enough with their experience here that they would tell an applicant to look elsewhere. That is REALLY extreme!

I would have a really hard time saying that a certain type of person would clash with Rochester as a school, or with the community in general. I do think that the school's curriculum (early clinical exposure, biopsychosocial model, patient centered approch) selects applicants and eventually students who are trulyinterested in their patients as people, and probably to a greater extent than some other schools. It is probably a bit more "touchy-feely" than some places, but I honestly think that this is about as far as you could go in saying that certain groups mesh better. (Note that despite this, not everybody goes into primary care! We have a match list that is annually quite baller in terms of both specialty and location competitiveness👍👍)

I'm happy as a lark and am immensely happy with the decision I made. I can't pick out a single one of my 100 classmates who would say differently, and that's the honest to god truth.

Again, sorry you had that experience! Please feel free to PM me with specific stuff... I'm more than happy to talk less candidly about specific concerns, etc!

Agree with above. I'm sorry you didn't have a good experience! When I visited Rochester for my interview, the students were the happiest group of people I had ever met at a medical school. I still feel the same about my class. It's unfortunate that you didn't come across those people! As for your tour guides, they "left" from your tour because they probably had to get to class. Unless it's a second year that doesn't have class in the afternoon or a 3rd/4th year not on a rotation, our admissions secretary normally takes over for the rest of the tour so the student can get to class.

Again, sorry this was your experience, and I'm also open to PMing for anything you want to chat about!

Thank you Poiu86 and lacrossefiend73!! I will definitely PM you with questions. I feel much better hearing this and maybe I just caught some people on a bad day.

I had an amazing experience at Rochester. Especially with the students I met, they were some of the friendliest and most outgoing I've come across yet. You must have caught them on a bad day, because like the others posted about, many students not involved with the tour or our interview day stopped and approached us and talked about how much they love the school. Please feel free to hit me up as well.

getting so excited, especially after reading even more rave reviews of rochester from its students, thanks guys!

anyone else interviewing Monday 9/26?

I don't know either of them, but I'm sure you'll be fine. I think admissions does a really good job choosing interviewers.

As for the no research experience... I really doubt you'll be grilled about it, but I'd be prepared for a question about it.

:luck::luck::luck:

Ahhhhhhhh! I had gone through this secondary, click, click, click, paid the fee more than a month ago and went on my merry way. Just thought I'd see if I could check my status today, and realized I didn't officially submit (forgot to do the electronic signature part)!

So basically I unnecessarily delayed my app by more than a month due to my stupidity. I'm telling myself it's not the end of the world because my committee letter didn't get released until mid-August, but I can't imagine it looks good that I sat on this secondary for that long. Facepalm. :smack:

Ahhh!!! Your post prompted me to check back in because I could've sworn I already submitted but I never did get that complete email...Lo and behold, I did the same thing! My committee letter got sent out late August but that's an extra month that I just lost from this whole process! Argh

:bang:

Complete 8/x, nothing yet.

update: they were both SUPER nice! they definitely make your interview day stress free here!

Is Rochester receptive to pre-interview update letters?

See doctors, staff, and patients at Highland Hospital dance for Breast Cancer awareness..

http://pinkglovedance.com/competition/entry-124

Highland Hospital is a member of the University of Rochester Medical Center system, and is where the family medicine program admits, and where surgery, medicine, neurology, and Ob-gyn residents rotate. Many medical students rotate there for 3rd year clerkships (some spend a lot of time there).

Thought this would be nice to share.
