For accepted students, what's the deal from now on with financial aid? Do we receive any information about that in the mail?

Also, when should I file my FAFSA?

Any current or prospective students who'd be willing to share their thoughts about what makes UTHSC special? I'm an OOS student (Virginia) and just got an interview notice. I really know little about the school and am not sure if it's really a right fit for me or if I should even accept the interview since I know so little about the school. At this point I think that even if I got accepted, I'd probably not go, but I really I don't know anything about the school! Any thoughts?

One of the things that I learned during my interview at UT is that its location allows for some of the best clinical experiences. I was told that because UT is one of the largest medical centers in the region, its students are exposed to a very diverse patient population that represents the full socioeconomic and racial spectrum. 3rd and 4th year students can do rotations in three different regions of the state (including urban, rural, and Appalachian parts of TN). Also, the new curriculum that was implemented this year is designed to give students clinical experiences from the very beginning of classes and to give coursework more relevance while studying the textbooks. Furthermore, lecture time is cut down to about 20 hours a week, freeing up more time for individual or group study, or extracurricular activities. Besides from the clinical exposure, the school has a generally warm, supportive environment and I hear is really good in helping struggling students.

These are just a few of the points that stood out to me, in addition to its proximity to my family. If UT is not your top choice, it could be an excellent back-up, especially if they give you more money to come.

Does anybody know what the process is for withdrawal?

I just got my interview invite for January 30th!! This is my second year applying. My interview is with David Nutting, Ph.D. Has anyone interviewed with him yet? This interview is about a month earlier than last year's. Is it too late for any hope of getting in? Last year's cycle ended with being put on the waitlist...

I'm in the exact same boat as you UTKpremed. Applied last year and was waitlisted as an oos, and I also interview on the 30th as well. But I have Dr. Suttle.

I interviewed with Dr. Nutting in November. Not to scare you, but it was by far the toughest interview I have had so far. He is a very nice guy and will joke around a lot, but also asks some very hard questions. Some of them were very vague, while others were very detailed ethical questions. Just be prepared and know your AMCAS application like the back of your hand!

nope still waiting for an interview

No pressure, right? lol Thanks for the warning!

I interviewed with Suttle last year. Good luck!

I interviewed with Suttle last year. Good luck!

I interviewed with Dr. Suttle last month. He did my "personal" interview, so if he does your "academic" interview it could be very different than mine.

He has a document of questions that he asks every interviewer (and of course questions that come up during the conversation). Be prepared to talk about some specific strengths, weaknesses, and your motivation for medicine (professional and personal experiences).

He was fun to talk to, has a strong sense of humor, and seemed pretty easygoing. He did ask me to re-answer two questions for which I hadn't really provided a relevant answer (apparently). I was accepted so I guess it went alright.

Good luck! Both of my UT interviews seemed focused on simply better understanding your application and personal characteristics, rather than trying to stump you or put you on the spot. I was never given an ethical dilemma (some were I think).

Has anyone received an interview invite since Friday? I was really expecting to hear something on Friday after the committee met... grrrr

Does anyone know what type of interview (academic or personal) re-applicants have? Also, what are the chances of a re-applicant getting an acceptance at this stage in the interview season? My interview this year is a month sooner than last year's.

Re-applicants usually have one interview that covers both academic and personal aspects of your application. I'm an accepted re-applicant that interviewed in late October, and my interviewer had two separate lists of questions (covering ethical issues, favorite classes, greatest challenges, and my opinions of what traits a great doctor should have, etc). I'm guessing they only need one interviewer to gauge how much you've improved/matured since your last application.

As for chances of acceptance, I'm not exactly sure. But don't lose hope though! :xf:

Accepted today!!! OOS 4.0/ 31M
Interviewed with Dr. Nutting and Dr. Cantrell on Jan. 3rd

Did anyone else get that sort of odd "are you still interested in interviewing" email from UTHSC earlier this week? I'm still trying to figure out what to make of it. 😕 I'm OOS.

I got it too. Have you e-mailed Mr. Strother back yet? I called him today and he said it was basically to just make sure that the OOS students that they were planning on granting an interview to were still interested in attending and had not committed to another university yet.

Btw, after e-mailing don't expect to get a date right away from him. Mr. Strother told me that I would be getting my date within the next week.

I hear that more letters will be sent out next Friday.

so acceptees: this 'here's your email ID, go to student accounts and you'll need to pay the nonrefundable 75$ app processing fee'... the email just says before you start, basically... so is there consensus that there's no due date on this fee? i saw no due date and since it's nonrefundable i kind of assume it is something that is not needed til a lot later (like may). y'all come to the same conclusion?

Just got an email saying, "TWO SEPARATE MAILINGS ARE ON THE WAY - This e-mail is sent to you to let you know that your letter will be mailed from our UTHSC campus post office..." etc. Acceptance?

Not trying to be nit picky, but if you don't get an email with wording similar to the above, does that mean reject or you haven't been discussed? I know they are pretty good about saying what they mean, so I want to be prepared for whatever situation may arise and not read too much into things.

Were you hoping to be in the Friday (01/27) mailing group or did you get an email but with different wording? I was also hoping to get an email saying that a letter was on its way, and I did not. I contacted my friend who is an M2, and she said not all if her classmates got emails to notify them their letter was sent, so maybe if the admissions office is too busy the email doesn't get sent. I hope that helps! I'm anxiously waiting...fingers crossed!!!

Have you gotten an email about the survey like others have mentioned? I'm just trying to figure out if they've even talked about me and if there might be a hint in the phrasing used in the emails - especially since both of the people in this thread who said they got the "two separate mailings are on the way" were accepted.

Regardless of the email, we'll find out eventually. GL!

No, I haven't recieved any emails since my interview invitation. Diane said that we should get a letter under all circumstances, even if it's to inform us that we are still under consideration. Just got to keep waiting. You are right, we will know eventually! :xf: Hope that helps.

I decided to withdraw from the invite. I've got another interview a little closer to home. Plus, I'm pretty sure I'll end up at my state school anyway. OOS tuition is :scared: Good luck everyone! :luck:

I interviewed on 1-11-12, and they met on the 20th to discuss interviewees from that day. Somewhere in between I got an e-mail saying they had sent me the survey in the mail, which I received a few days later. I got no e-mail to inform me of a letter coming after the meeting on the 20th, but I received a letter today saying that a final decision has not been made (sent on the 27th). Agh. :/ But I am OOS, so I guess it's not surprising. However, I am a double legacy (both parents went to UT Memphis), so I was hoping that would help a little! Oh well... I guess they'll let me know by MAY...

Has anyone been REJECTED? Or are they not rejecting anyone yet?

I'm wondering if anyone has heard anything about interview invites since they just met this past Friday...Anyone?

Deutsch, I received an interview invite on Sunday around 5 pm. Weird of it coming on a Sunday, but I am OK with that!

Thanks. I take it you got a phone call? Is that usual? I wasn't sure if they emailed, snail mailed, or called...

Thanks, Kitty. *sigh* What an excruciating process. *slams the violin that just started playing against wall and walks off* Good luck peeps.

Just remember they interview into March. And they save seats, AFAIK. It's not over until you get the rejected letter. It is very hard to wait. I hear ya.

Yeah, there are still 23 interview dates left: http://www.uthsc.edu/Medicine/Admissions/schedules/[2012]_INTERVIEW_DATES.pdf

Does anyone know how many seats have been filled for this year's entering class?

I am super excited about my interview but after looking at last year's thread it seems everyone who interviews in February is competing for a wait list position...

Hey guys, got my invite Sunday night for this coming Tuesday. Has anyone interviewed with Dr. Park or know anything about him that google doesn't?

No. They had seats open even in March.

Question: Where would be the best place to live in Memphis? I will be applying this summer for entry in the fall of 2013. By that time I will be married, and we will both be 22 yo. So my biggest concern is her safety. I have googled and googled and it seems the best bet would be to live on Mud Island. Any opinions on this? I have never been to Memphis. Thanks and good luck to those still waiting and congrats to those accepted!

I've lived in Memphis for most of my life and think there are plenty of good neighborhoods. I'm currently in East Memphis near the University of Memphis and it's fine, but there's a 20-40 min commute to contend with. Mud Island is a safe bet since there's no possibility of foot traffic, as would be Germantown, but that's a longer drive. They're both very cookie-cutter if that bothers you. Midtown, IMO, is the coolest part of town with artsy people and old, affordable houses, but the neighborhoods change in character dramatically from block to block. South Main & the downtown core are very cool, but also expensive.

In general, avoid going too far north or south of the poplar/union/walnut grove corridor and you'll be fine. I hope to rent a carriage/guest house in central gardens if I get in.

Shoot me a message if I can help out with specific areas.
