So I'm a little confused on the Stritch grading system. A PDF i found says that they grade as honors, high pass, pass, remediated pass, and failure. However in the same document it states "Students achieving a grade average equivalent to 3.5, 3.7, and 3.9 on a four-point scale will be recommended respectively for the graduation laudatories of cum laude, magna cum laude, and summa cum laude."

Is H HP P P* F just another way of saying A B C D F and it's not truly a pass/fail system?

From what I understand you're correct. The pass/fail system is an unranked pass/fail, while the H HP P P* F system is the traditional super-competitive grading scheme we're used to as undergrads.

The M1s that took us on a tour said the grading system is Honors/HP/P/Fail. I assume a remediated pass means you passed a class on your second (remediation) try. The M1s didn't say anything about it, and I didn't know about it until now so I didn't ask.

But yes, basically H/HP/P/F is like A/B/C/F. If it isn't just P/F, then it isn't "truly" a P/F system. Loyola does have a P/F class though, the PCM class. At least that's what the assistant dean said.

I hope you all take me seriously when I say that a grading system literally has NOTHING to do with the competitive culture at a school. Stritch is NOT a competitive school.

The fact of the matter is pre-clinical grades are among the LOWEST considered factors by residency program directors when ranking 4th years. Low priority for program directors means low priority for medical students as well. Well, relatively. Low priority for a medical student still means significant effort is placed in the endeavor. Even so, there isn't a pressure to get all H's.

Also, many schools that are pure P/F keep a DETAILED class rank. Detailed meaning Goober11 is 43 out of 174 stuff like that. Here we just split the class into THIRDS and it's not something that is even available until you do your ERAS---as far as I know (I'm only an MS2). Nobody here has access to or is checking their class rank after exams---I know that for sure.

One last thing, H HP P P* F has nothing to do with undergrad. P*≠ D, a P* is a remediated class.

The PCM class is a strict pass/fail course. The other courses are on the H, HP, P, P*, F system. One thing us M1s have been told by the administration is that we are the first year that all of our courses will be graded on a "Criterion" basis. This means that the H, HP, P and F designations are pre-set before the course even begins and these designations are not based on a curve. That is to say that in the past, your grade in certain courses was determined on how you well you scored on the test compared to your classmates where as now that is not the case. Everyone in the class can get honors if they get above a certain percentage. I think this is a great system, because it takes away all of the competitiveness with your fellow classmates. I don't find the environment here competitive with one another at all.

My mistake! Thank you for clearing it up 🙂

Definitely a great system!

Do you guys know if your grades are published on your residency application or is it something the school keeps for internal purposes?

MEDPR--IDK for sure, but my GUESS would be they are fair game for residencies. Guess I'll ask next time I am in Student Affairs and then I will get back to you.

I'm really hoping the fact that I've been under review since 8/30 is a good thing...!

Has anyone figured out which hold status is better yet?

Which "hold" statuses are you referring to? The three, post-completion statuses I've seen discussed here are:

1.) "We have received all required information and your file is under review with the Committee on Admissions."

2.) "Status feedback not yet defined."

3.) "Your file has been reviewed by the Committee on Admissions. The review process is continuous from now until the conclusion of our interview season in mid-April. If you are granted an interview, you will be contacted by phone and/or e-mail."

I've had the first status for quite a while now (I believe since mid-early August). So perhaps it could be a hold status? Eh, it's so tempting to read too much into these things! 🙂

Those statuses (stati?) are as follows, from what I can gather:
1) Still being reviewed
2) Interview invite
3) Hold

I had #1 for 7 weeks before being offered an interview. I believe everyone goes to #1 after Loyola receives your application and from there you're moved to #2 or #3 whenever they see fit. I seems those at #1 are closer to getting an interview than #3 (at this point), since #3 applicants have already been reviewed and removed from the #1 grouping.

I submitted the secondary six weeks ago, and they still haven't downloaded my letters. I'm assuming this is normal considering how many applications were submitted before me, but is anyone else on the same page?

i have this hypothesis that the longer you are under review, the better your chance for an interview without being put on hold. i have read through a ton of older threads, and its just my gut feeling.i could obviously be wrong though.

You didn't happen to stumble upon anything that suggests that the longer they take to download your letters the more likely you are to be accepted, did you?

Perhaps they will see our posts on SDN and offer us interviews? 😉

Is Dean Jones/ADCOM receptive to post-interview, but pre-decision LOIs? I want to do everything to help me at this school!

I am planning on waiting till after my decisions at all my schools to send updates or LOIs. This is because if I wanted to have weapons at my disposal in case I get wait listed. If I send them now, I have no weapons!

But what if a pre-decision loi gets you from rejected to wait listed? That's why im considering it.. in case you were wondering 😉

YOU GOT THIS MUFFIN! 👍:luck:

(P.S. - I know it's a cupcake, I just wanted to say muffin b/c it's cuter hahaha)

How long were people who are currently on hold under review for initially??

Never heard of anyone doing that before. However, I would keep the LOI in your pocket for now. Who is to say you won't like another school better in a couple months.

I don't think I will, but I am trying to be open to the possibility. I felt at home all day at Loyola. Everything from the typical stuff like curriculum/grading/rotations to the class size and Jesuit mission is an absolute perfect fit. The only thing I don't like about Loyola is the M1 lecture hall chairs (not sure about M2, I didn't get a chance to sit in them) are way too comfortable.

Judging med school based on chair aesthetics: doing it wrong. 😀

I guess if the only thing one can find to criticize is the chairs, the school is good.

👍 Indeed. Loyola is beyond amazing.

"Your file is complete and pending further review by our Committee on Admissions. If you are granted an interview you will be contacted by phone and/or email. Our interview season is September thru April and your file can be reviewed several times during this time. "

what does this status mean?

So I went directly from the "Please allow at least one month to download LOR" status to the "complete and pending further review" status. I never actually had the "under review" status. Did this happen to anyone else?

They still haven't downloaded my letters... When did you submit the secondary?

Yes this happened to me as well! Good to know I'm not alone. I was complete about two weeks ago, so who knows what this means haha.

I submitted on 7/27 and wasn't marked complete/didn't go under review until 8/30. So it can take a while for them to download your letters.

Been under review for 4.5 weeks now. LOVE ME, Loyola!

Do any current students know if Dean Jones or the ADCOM is receptive to post-interview, but pre-decision LOIs?

Yes! I just went from the "wait while we download LORs" status to this status today. I wonder if it means anything different than plain old "under review" status. 😕

I just went from the downloading letters status for 6+ weeks straight to the complete and has been reviewed status....

Haha, it sounds like maybe they just assign a random one of the three once they download your LoRs.

Seriously. I've been 'under review' for 6+ weeks and would looove to get one of those interview calls...

There is also a 4th status.

"Your file is complete and pending further review by our Committee on Admissions. If you are granted an interview you will be contacted by phone and/or email. Our interview season is September thru April and your file can be reviewed several times during this time."

I wonder what that means.

+1 I just went straight from downloading LOR to this one yesterday

No idea what the statuses mean, but mine says "We have received all required information and your file is under review with the Committee on Admissions."

What's a typical "day in the life" of a Loyola student?

I was thinking more along the lines of class times, afternoon stuff (scheduled vs free), how often exams were, are occurring in the same week or randomly, etc. I suppose I could have been more specific. Didn't see this info earlier in the thread.

That's what happens when you're posting 70x a day... 🙂

400 posts in 7 days. You're an SDN machine. They should be paying you!!
