phone call - accepted 🙂

Congrats! I'm pretty sure I'm in the 33% of interviewees who don't get accepted. Fml.

Thank you! I believe it was Sept. 19th!

Well at least I interviewed after you so maybe I'm still safe.

Ugh.

Got the call about a half hour ago while I was on the elliptical, so of course I got off and answered it! Interviewed September 21 and absolutely loved Loyola. Soooo stoked right now!

Two questions for those of you who got accepted today.

1. Did you interview on or after 9/25?
2. Has your online status changed since the ii?

hey guys. congratulations to all who were accepted today! I got the call around 5 PM EST, so something like 4 out in Chicago. really really looking forward to meeting everybody at second look. loved loyola, top choice here. pumped beyond belief.

if you're still waiting, best of luck. it's a marathon, not a sprint. you're all going to be fine.

fyi (cause i know someone wants to know)- I interviewed on 9/4, so really early. GPAs in the 3.6-3.7 range, MCAT 31-33. reasonably good ECs, i suppose. good letters, etc. i spent a lot of time on the secondary essays for loyola though, and I think I wrote some pretty good ones. put a lot of thought into them, and i think that helped a lot.

I interviewed before 9/25.

Man, just looking at all these residency programs at Loyola's hospital is impressive. It's like they have a program in everything I'm interested in.

You guys are making way to anxious. Oct 29th is officially a lifetime away......

Bump. Did anyone accepted today interview on or after 9/25?

Congrats to everyone who got accepted today! I hope that you all give Loyola a good look cuz its a great place!

For those of you still waiting, try to relax (much easier said than done). This is too long of a process to start worrying.

Hey applicants - congrats to those who have already scored an interview. I graduated from Loyola Med in June, and just started my internship. Loyola's clinical training is absolutely superb -- I was well prepared to hit the ground running, and thus far intern year has been much less stressful than it likely would have been had I attended a school with alot of "big names" / big egos on the faculty who didn't have time to teach me how to be a good clinician. I did fairly well at Loyola academically, and while the H/HP/P/F system seems like scare-tactics to most pre-meds coming through the door, it's actually very useful to you as a student when it comes time for AOA selection and residency applications. If you go to a school where it's P/F for the 1st two years, it might seem like you get to relax and forget about competition, but the flip side is you have almost *zero* way to distinguish yourself for your residency app during those years (unlike pre-med, residency program directors won't really care how many clubs you belonged to during medical school), and often the entire weight of those years in your residency application gets transferred to your Step 1 score. And no matter how rockstar you are, ANYONE can have a bad day when they take Step 1, so it's nice to have a fall-back, objectively defined record of your activities over two years, rather than just some secret-back-door-faculty-meetings that keep tabs on the "good" students under the veil of the P/F system. If nothing else, it takes some of the pressure off of the test day when you take Step 1, so your performance won't be negatively impacted.

For your residency application, programs will indeed have access to your entire transcript, and will be able to see all your grades for all 3.3yrs-er-so that you have completed when you are applying. Most attention will fall on your clinical marks (especially the medicine and surgery rotations), and Alpha Omega Alpha status. Some folks could care less about AOA, because they're entering a less competitive specialty, or don't have a particular geographic region in mind for residency, but for others, AOA membership can actually be quite important to the residency application process. At Loyola, Alpha Omega Alpha status is awarded at the end of the third year (just once, some schools have "junior" AOA based on just the first two years), and is granted to the top ~16% of the class, based on a semi-objective weighted composite of information:
1) 75% Grades - This includes your pre-clinical grades AND your clinical grades. And as you will discover during your 3rd year rotations at any medical school, clinical grades are highly subjective depending on the physicians who evaluate you (thus the "semi-objective" selection process mentioned above). The "weighting" of the grades on your transcript is heavily skewed toward the clinical clerkships in the 3rd year -- with the combined weight of the medicine and surgery clinical clerkships almost completely equaling the first two years of basic science curriculum grades.
2) 25% Step 1 Score - Just the raw score vs the other people in the class.

This selection process (for those who care) is different at every medical school -- a few schools don't have AOA, for some it is chosen only based on your 3rd year grades, at some it is just a faculty panel nominating and selecting students. In any case, Loyola has an AOA chapter, and if you want to do something competitive, it's nice to know that the selection process for it takes ALOT of objective data into consideration, rather than just being a popularity contest, as it is at other institutions.

Some people don't like talking about all of the above issues, because in the end they are quite silly and have no bearing on how good a physician you will ultimately be, but it's important to at least mention it, because it can have a profound impact on your residency application process if you choose something competitive -- and it's worth considering this information for each school that you apply to.

In addition, for those applying from outside of the mid-west, or with desire to match outside of the mid-west for residency -- I came from the west coast, and was a little concerned that the lack-of-national-recognition of Loyola's name would influence where I received interviews. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that Loyola is much better known than I thought and/or program directors really didn't care where I went to school -- I ended up getting interviews at all of the big academic places I applied to on both the west and east coast, and ultimately matched at my #1 choice on the west coast.

Drop me a line if you have any other questions! Good luck!

Wow! Thanks for the great post CodeBlack! I got an acceptance offer today and this is good information to know weighing my options over the next few months. I heard about AOA before, but didn't really get what that meant and this clarifies things. So they choose members differently at every school? And some schools it's just a panel vote? I think I might want to go into radiation oncology, and I'm from California, so I should probably try to figure this out about any of schools where I get acceptance offers. I'm pretty stoked about Loyola. Beautiful school, great gym, great reputation, students on the interview day said there's great class notes available that parse down all the lectures into high yield learning points, and all the lectures are video recorded so you can just watch online from home, which is totally my style. Got a really solid vibe on my interview day. Did anyone from your class match into radiation oncology this year?

To my knowledge, two people applied to rad onc this year, and they both matched -- it was an off-year for Chicago in rad-onc, since reportedly Northwestern ended up taking two internal candidates outside of the match for their spots, and most of the other programs that alternate between taking one or two candidates per year were only taking one. One of the applicants in my class snagged the open spot at Loyola, and another one couples matched with someone going into ophthalmology and they ended up at U Nevada, Reno -- which I believe was their #2 choice -- not bad for the couples match. Congrats on your acceptance! And good luck in your decision making process.

Can any current Stritch students talk about research at the school? I know they said that they were building a new research facility in 2015, but I'm wondering how is it now? Their website says that a bit more than a third of their students participate in research, but does this seem like a small number? How easy is it to get involved in research?

Accepted yesterday and really looking forward to going here!
I just some questions I couldn't find on their website. Should I call the admissions office for the board pass rates for last year and the match lists?

The match list was in the magazine you got on interview day. It's also been posted on here somewhere. Not sure about the board pass rate.

Has anyone gotten a call today (10/16)?

IDK what our pass rate is but most US MD schools are in the mid to upper 90s and I don't have reason to believe we are outside of that. I know our current MS3 crushed Step 1 and everyone is all pumped about that.

At this point you are smart enough to get into med school and schools' curricula are standardized by the LCME. Each school has its own way teaching these things but you will be well taught almost anywhere you go. Just passing is sort of on you at that point. Getting an awesome score, well, I don;'t really know how to address that from a curriculum perspective.

I'd say 1/3 does STAR but many more, maybe 60-70% do research total. Not everyone who does research does STAR (our M1-M2 summer research gig).

Everyone I know that has wanted to do research has done it and usually in the field/department they are interested in. Helps that we have the hospital right next to the school and very accessible faculty.

Wow just got a call and it was an interview invite! Will most likely turn it down b/c i'm OOS and was just in IL 2 weeks ago for another interview but def excited and wil think about it

Sent in the secondary end of August but wasn't complete until maybe 2-3 weeks ago, don't remember the exact date. OOS 3.45, 30R

Thanks, that's great to hear. It's funny, I wasn't that interested in research as an undergrad, but it's become something I really want to do in med school.

The Director of Admissions stated to our group that their Step 1 scores matched national averages. I was looking for the information for national numbers and that looks to be around a 222-224 and about 92-95%. The exact numbers vary for national average and national pass rate because, since those numbers are allowed to be kept private, almost no schools release them, even the very best ones. Because of this most every school can claim to be at or above the national average, whether it be true or not. That being said, take what you hear about Step 1 scores at every school with a grain of salt.

Take home message about Step 1: In all honesty, Step 1 scores tend to follow MCAT scores, ACT scores, SAT scores, and all other standardized tests. Sure, some schools might have better scores than others, but individual scores, by my understanding, are more based on individual intelligence and understanding of the material rather than the curriculum of the school (plus some luck 🙂). Just because a school claims to have an awesome Step 1 average doesn't mean you will.

By my understanding almost every student passes Step 2, and it doesn't play a part in residency matches at all.

Yes, you should have a copy of the match list from interviewing, or I actually found it online before I interviewed. You may have to do a bit of hunting though (aka Googling).

Rooting for you, MedPR. I won't hear anything back until the 29th, but this is an awesome school.

I know how you feel...I could theoretically hear back from two schools today--or at least this week. I'm trying to get some school done, but I'm pretty much worthless...I keep refreshing my email and checking SDN. 😳

Same. 🙁 Been waiting for my phone to ring all day, but it's just about 5pm in Chicago now so I guess I'm not getting in.

...for today, anyway. Loyola accepts the majority of interviewees. The fact that you were interviewed means they consider you to be qualified, and I'm sure your passion for the school came through in both of your interviews.

Edit: And besides...it's the second day. Or so I tell myself....

Watch your mail. What they told us at my interview day is that they may not have time to call everyone after the committee meeting, in which case you would get your acceptance/other response by mail. :luck::luck:

I hope so.

They kinda told us this too, but they said something like "don't worry if you don't get your call on the 15th..." I assumed that meant everyone gets a call, just maybe not on the first day. AHHHHHHHHH freaking out.

Edit: I am a little comforted by the fact that nobody got a call today.. at least it seems that way.

I think they only do calls on one day, then wait a while, then do another round of calls. I wouldn't expect anymore calls until at least next week.

Can any current students confirm whether or not the 14K Loyola designates for cost of living every year is accurate, or is that a bit too much or too little?

More than enough. I call it a beer and burgers budget. You aren't eaten ramen every night and you also aren't eating at Next downtown either. We aren't starving, we go out plenty and are able to keep the heat going at home, ha.

Rent in Forest Park is 400-700/mo, parking is included or 40/mo
Oak Park: 600-$1,000,000, parking is included or 50-60/mo

Thanks! Is there a certain apartment complex where med students usually live in Forest Park?

Hey MedPR, I interviewed on the 25th and I haven't heard anything either. I've been freaking out waiting by the phone too, but I guess at this point there's use losing sleep over it until I know SOMETHING one way or the other.

Has anyone had any success with in the area emails? I have an interview in Chicago on 11/7 and would love to interview at Loyola at that point too. Anyone know what days they typically have interviews on?

Yes, they are receptive to in the area emails - I sent one and about a week later got a call with an interview invite! Worth a try. Good luck!
