OHSU takes forever with everything. I was complete near the start of the cycle, and it took a long time.

Stats from today's interview
Primaries received over 5000 (so far they have had 5200 this year)
secondaries received ~3000
Mission based group screening ~1800
interviews given ~500
acceptances offered ~225-250
next year's class 144

They have over 3000 secondaries to wade through to get to roughly 500 interview spots. It takes a little while.

In-state is good, it at least puts you into one of the mission based groups.

The other bit of good news for you (but bad news for me) is that they put nearly everyone that interviews on "hold" until March, then they get a numbered position. The highest ranked applicants will be automatic acceptances, the rest will be on a numbered wait-list. Even if you interview in March, you have a chance of an automatic acceptance. At other schools, a March interview may be only for a deferred acceptance or a wait-list position.

Thank you, that is helpful information. I guess I'll just sit tight for the next couple months and hope for the best.

During our lunch with students, an MS4 saved the day IMO. He was very knowledgable about the school in general, as one would hope, but really knew how to lead a great discussion about the school and really sold it to students. I actually came away with a much more positive impression of the school than I had going in - not that it was bad to begin with.

To be fair the four MS1s that started off in the room were doing a great job. Then the MS4 comes rushing in the room (running from OB/Gyn clinic), and seemed to really take over. IMO he was a little pushy to take over like that. He did have some good things to say, but I thought he was rather rude in the way that he ignored what already happened and just took over. It may be that he was scheduled to lead the discussion, but he was late and never really stated that he was supposed to be in charge, he just assumed the position of leadership. If I would have been one of the MS1s, I would have felt really insulted by him.

You give me hope psychkub.

Sent from my iPod using SDN Mobile app. Please excuse the typos.

I looked at your MDApps, very impressive. Since you do fit into one of the "mission based groups" you have a chance. Now you need to make it into one of the ~500 interview positions (out of ~1800 mission based applicants). Not an easy task, but also not impossible.

Good luck to you.

PS are the aquarium plants you sell fresh or marine? I had the saltwater bug for many years and some people call coral "plants." I am in the process of selling off all my stuff so I can become a poor student again.

accepted!! So so grateful! Secondary Complete: 07/19/2012; Interviewed 10/10/12 Best of luck to you all!

Wow fast turnaround. Congrats! Did you receive an email? I think last year you got an email if accepted but if on hold or refused you had to check the portal.

Oregon mailed out their first round of secondaries 7/19... Did you submit/were completed immediately? That's quite a fast turnaround, I agree.

In state. MCAT- 33. GPA- 3.74. And yes i submitted right away...

I received an e-mail- and then double checked my status, because I didn't believe it... and my bad i actually submitted my secondary on 7/22/12.

Not that I do not believe nichols, but it seems kinda strange to me that no else has posted an acceptance/hold/reject status today to confirm this first time poster's claim... I'm fairly confident there were other SDN regulars that were interviewed on 10/10 and/or 10/12.

Congrats on the acceptance if you're not just pulling our chain to make us think OHSU has stepped up their game in terms of turnaround time

Hopefully it's a sign that turn around times will be way quicker than usual

Missed the Primary application date due to family reasons. So I'll be ( hopefully ) heading up next year. MCAT Scores are what I believe to be fine. 34. I have my letters of recommendation from former OHSU graduates, as well as a GPA of 3.82.

Congrats to all of those who have made it through so far! hopefully I'll be with you all soon. 😀

Sorry to hear that Nike. It looks like you have set yourself up nicely for success in the next cycle though!

Apply early and broadly next year. If I have learned one lesson this year, the more schools you apply to, the greater your chances of getting in somewhere.

Although, with your stats you won't need to worry about it.

Also, get the secondary prompts from this year and start pre-writing. If you have the papers written, then submitting them will be a piece of cake. Chances are that the essays will be the same next year. OHSU has a beast of a secondary have it finished before you need to start it.

Use the secondary to tell a story to supplement your primary application. I tried to get the secondary essays to connect from one to the next in a logical sequence to tell a larger story. Don't have them disconnected papers. That way you spend fewer characters introducing and concluding each story. It gives the person interviewing you more to talk about.

Good luck next year. I am sorry to hear that you missed the deadline this year.

First of all, Thank you very much for the advice, and the warm welcome. I've applied to several out of state as well.

OHSU is a first choice for me with family being here etc. I've not yet started pre-writing because I am having trouble finding the prompts.

Family Issues came first and I had to take care of a very sick family member who suffered a Cerebral aneurysm and was flown to St.Charles Medical Center in Bend, OR for surgery!

Anyways, off of my soap box now! Glad to be here.

The prompts are on the second page of this thread.

Question 1 - What experience have you had that has given you insight into the patients you hope to eventually serve?
Question 2 - What will be your greatest challenge in becoming a physician?
Question 3 - Give an example of a time when you tried your best to work with a person or a group but the problems still remained. What did you learn from the experience?
Question 4 - Describe a time when you did not receive what you felt you deserved, and how you reacted.
Question 5 - Give an example of personal feedback in the last few years that was difficult to receive. How did you respond?
Question 6 - Please discuss the diversity that you would bring to the OHSU School of Medicine and the profession of medicine.

I don't remember, but it was a ridiculously small number of characters that were allowed. I think they were about 1500 characters, except the last one which was a little longer.

I completely agree with the family thing. I was applying LAST year, but pulled out due to family issues.

Good luck.

dsoz

Yea I think the last one was like 4000 characters

Yeah first 5 were 1500 and last was 2000. I guess in the optional page you have the opportunity to explain any adversity (economic, educational, cultural) you've faced.

That's the one I was thinking the adversity one. Which I believe was 4000 characters

Over 9 weeks of radio silence since I completed. I wish they would just get this over with already. I know it is my reach school and I would like to treat it like a band-aid...just get the pain over with quickly!

Do you meet one of the mission groups?

Do you meet one of the mission groups?

I have met ExcitedToApply, who does meet at least one mission group.

Not only that, but ETA is a very nice person, and an excellent candidate for being a physician. OHSU would be a better place if they accepted ExcitedToApply! They should at least offer an interview. (that is my opinion!)

I am sorry to hear that you have not heard from OHSU. When was your file complete? Never mind... nine weeks ago. duh.

dsoz

PS- You should change your username to ExcitedToAttendMedicalSchool! 🙂

So when people say "complete," do they mean when they're updated to some sort of complete status on the application website? Or do they mean when they submitted the thing?

I have a status in the application portal of when my application was complete

Huh... Is there a point at which I should shoot them an email? Or are really long completion waits normal at present?

I'd say it depends. When were you complete? And do you meet one of the mission groups?

Complete 9/13 (didn't prewrite, brutal secondary). I am a WA resident in the high stats mission group. Should I be surprised to have heard nothing so far?

I was complete a few days after you an got an II last week but I am in state so I wouldn't be too worried yet

Thank you very much for the flattery.

I considered changing my name but realized that I have come to interpret the name as "applying myself" rather than just applying to medical school (which of course is what I originally had in mind). It serves as a reminder that I will spend the rest of my life applying my knowledge and desire to reach my goals, whatever they may be.

As for mission based, OR resident, can be considered "diverse/challenged background" maybe. But my GPA/MCAT aren't on the right side of the bell curve for this school. Meh, I will just keep waiting! I know they tend to take their time. C'est la vie.

Got an email from the OHSU School of Medicine, had a small heart attack...and then it's just a newsletter about the Marquam Hill lecture series. :eyebrow:

Those are the worst! When I was applying to TX, one of the schools sent out an email inviting each applicant to a reapplicant seminar and fuh-reaked everyone out! They ended up sending out a mass apology and reiterated that it was just a general invitation and had no bearing on anyone's status. LoL

Please describe the nature of the adversity: Adversity essay characters left: 4000

I hate checking my email now. Where are you in the process pre or post interview?

Pre-interview. I just got marked complete two weeks ago, so I'm not getting my hopes up for an invite in the next month.

You have nothing to worry about. If I could get an interview, then so can you. Just rock the MMI and the personal interview and you will be in.

I'm actually not that worried about OHSU, just impatient 🙂

I think it's ok for a doctor to have inpatients sometimes, especially if they are a hospitalist :meanie:

OOOH, that was a good one (or bad one, depends on how you look at it). Now I really hope that I can meet you someday in person so we can swap bad jokes. Ha ha.

Accepted just now with an email. Interviewed 10/12. Thrilled!

Glad to see their 6-8 week timeframe turn into just over three weeks... at least for the early interviews :meanie:
