So, what if I just inherited properity in Dallas, OR and have a deed with my name on it...think that'd help me get residency faster if accepted? Think I should submit an LOI and mention something about owning property in OR? I applied MD/MPH, so I'm in part of their mission group... Just wondering. Any input is appreciated. I really love this school.

Unlikely. From all the talks I've heard from OHSU they always say, with respect to residency, "you have a year to lose it and a year to gain it." Meaning you have to be primarily living in the state for one year prior to the first day of class and for reasons other than education to gain in-state preference/tuition. You can check their website for other details as I know its on there somewhere.

Here is the link: http://www.ohsu.edu/xd/education/st...r/registrar-forms/upload/Residency-Policy.pdf

Yeah, I visited that page. You're right about that 1 year clause, but there's also this other peculiar statement:

"Various other indicia of residency, e.g., ownership of Oregon living quarters, permanent Oregon employment, payment of Oregon income taxes."

I'm guessing it falls under the 1 year clause... I'll just leave it be for now, I guess, unless a current student or someone suggests otherwise.

Thanks DAPI.

The PDF I just linked to above says ownership of property alone is not enough.

Besides, it would be a LOOOOOONG commute from Dallas to OHSU. Probably about 90 minutes each way. That is if you don't get caught in traffic in Salem or in Portland. One bad accident could be bad news.

I don't look forward to the commute, and I only live 20 minutes from "pill hill"

Oh dear lord, I'd never make that commute! I was just hoping it'd help my cause of desperately trying to get an interview here. Me. Love. Ore-gone. 🙂

So, I just found the invitation to my secondary at OHSU in my spam folder and it is now 3 days past my 2ndary app deadline. What should I do? I really do want to apply here...

Something like this happened to a friend of mine. He submitted 1-2 days late and they accepted his app anyway. Best to contact them to be sure, and just explain what happened.

Haha. Well of course they'll accept my application because it comes with $95, right. But the real question might be... was your friend actually given a shot? Do you know if he/she got an interview?

That was one of the times they rejected him, but he's an M1 there now.

OHSU does love re-applicants. I think it is close to 30% of their class is a second (or more) time applicant.

Does anybody know a phone number to call the admissions office? I tried sending an email to [email protected], but I'd feel much better about giving them a call.

So far I have been unable to find their phone number on the website. Does anybody know what it is or where to find it?

They neither answer the phone nor return calls. Email is your best bet, unfortunately.

Thus far, invitations to interview have been sent on Wednesdays... so, here's hoping for another batch tomorrow! 😀

So despite everyone saying on this forum that OSHU is slow at getting back to people...

I got this email reply to my asking about my 2ndary deadline that had passed within 2 hours of sending it:

.Hi XXXXX,.
.There is no penalty for submitting your secondary application after the deadline. The web portal will still work for you. Please let me know if you have any questions..
.Best,.
.XXXXX
.
.OHSU MD Admissions.

So I'm gonna work on these 6 questions and hopefully knock this whole thing out by the end of the day...

If there's no penalty, what's the purpose of the deadline? 😕

Good luck with that. Took me over a month!

It's impossible by phone. By email, especially when $95 is on the line, is a different question... 😉

Don't dilly-dally, but don't do a half-ass job either. They really really value their secondary essay questions.

Following up on my post from August 9th:
I haven't retaken the MCAT yet, have been dealing with some health issues this summer (my own, and a parent's).

I haven't decided what I want to do with this cycle. It's getting a bit late to try to cram for the September MCAT so that I can apply to OHSU again. Or I could just apply to the small handful schools that will accept older MCAT scores while preparing for a possible fourth cycle.
After submitting my app to some schools that take 2009 MCAT scores in late August, I was all but ready to just move on. And then at the eleventh hour I, uh, sorta lost my mind. I registered for a September MCAT, crammed for 7 days, and retook that damn thing like a rabid Honey Badger. I got my score today and while it ain't pretty, it's a valid 2012 score. 👍

Added OHSU to my schools list today. They're not going to get rid of me that easily. :meanie:

Good for you! I was rooting for you last year, and will follow your story again this year.

If I see any lost 21- ~30 y.o.'s in suits tomorrow I'll try and help you out lol (I work at OHSU)

Soooo jealous. Working at OHSU was the best time of my life! I miss the PNW laid-back attire. I would not be able to distinguish suit-wearers as interviewees on the East Coast.

Quick question for those of you who got interviews: How long after your application was marked as "processed" did you hear about the interview?

Forever....

I was complete on 8/8 and did not hear about an interview until 10/3.

I was in the group that was invited for the second interview day, so I was really early.

Oh wow. I'm still not complete and they've had my app for just over 6 weeks. I guess I probably don't have to think about interviews until next year then. 😴

I'm sorry. OHSU moves really slow. I am disappointed that you won't be in the interview group this month. It would be nice to see someone else from SDN there. 🙁

Interviewed at OHSU today. I really liked everyone and got a great feeling about the school. I was terrified about the MMI, but it was actually really fun--just like everyone says! If you've got an interview coming up, don't sweat that part!

Did they tell you how long it would be before you know the result?

They said that the first few rounds should hear back within 4-6 weeks. If you meet the acceptance cutoff you will be accepted right away, and same for the rejection cutoff. Otherwise you'll be placed on hold, probably until May when they release the wait list. Sounds like the acceptance cutoff is pretty high, so a lot of us will be on hold.

That is what I am afraid of happening. When I interview in two weeks, I feel like telling the interviewers "just accept me, reject me, do whatever. I don't care as long as it is not putting me on hold."

I already have two acceptances, and waiting to hear back from a third school. I don't have time to wait around for OHSU to pull the wait-list shuffle in May. I will have already made plans to move by then.

Note: still trying to figure out how to imbed GIFS in a post. Not working. :smack:

I know the feeling. Just try your best to knock the interviews out of the park, it is a very heavy portion of their determining score.

Most people get put on the wait list. That's just how they operate. I think part of it is because they want to put together a cohesive class, so they wait until they've interviewed most people. It's a very long wait but a pretty awesome school. So if you want to go there, you just have to be patient. Acceptances off of the waitlist go pretty deep.

These essays are seriously killing me. I've been working on them for over two weeks now and I still have one and a half left to go, and I know the clock is ticking down. Ugh 🙁

What is an acceptance cutoff?

Its an arbitrary (more or less) line schools set for which they will not offer admission if the student does not meet - normally based on GPA and MCAT. At OHSU its a GPA of 2.8 and an MCAT of 24.

Having said that, if you do not meet one of OHSU's mission groups you are very very unlikely to receive an interview. Mission group info can be found here

I'm a reapplicant but I didn't apply to OHSU the first time. Will they love me? I think I just might fall into one of their mission groups.

What is an acceptance cutoff?
From what I understood, they assign each interviewee a numeric score based on interview and application. It's heavily weighted towards the scores on the MMI, but also includes academics and ECs. There may be a breakdown explained somewhere. So, everyone gets a score and that is how they decide who is admitted. If you're above a cutoff you get automatically admitted, otherwise you wait until they review more of the on-hold applicants.

Mind sharing details on the format of the MMI? How many stations were there and how much time was given for each? Thanks!
FYI, they make you sign a NDA so there's not much people can share about the process.

Right now I'm actually feeling kind of glad that some schools take longer than others. I'm still in school full time & I have 3 cross-country interviews in the next 4 weeks. If any more show up my head is going to explode.

They talk about the MMI in the email they send before the interview. There are seven stations, each eight minutes long with two minutes in between each station. What goes on in each station is the classified part.

There is also a twenty-two minute traditional style interview. I don't think that what I said is classified information subject to the NDA.

Does OHSU tell you if they decide not to offer an interview?
