No, he used a Vis-a-Vis marker. And the acetates were already printed on. There are many ways to do this, but it looked like he had the type that could be put through the photocopier.

Not quite as old as the wax marker.

I am almost tempted to talk to him next year and help him convert to the modern era. Make all those acetates into power points. But I know how some old school teachers are stuck in their ways (talking about myself here) and not willing to change. 🙂

I interviewed 3/15. OOS, Montana resident. My husband was born and raised in Oregon and he and his family sing the praises of the school. They were shocked 8 years ago when I asked what OHSU was because I had never heard of it and they truly believe it is a household name, on par with Mayo or an Ivy league. My husband warned me that because they are a top school I might find the students to be snobby. I thought the students were very, very nice. The buildings seemed old, but I know they are building a new building, so that didn't really matter to me. Overall, I liked the school and I had 10 other interviews this year. Really, my biggest issue is that it is really expensive and the cost of living is expensive too. I liked the school, but honestly would rather not live that close to my inlaws and don't know if it's worth the huge sticker price (during our lunch, an MS1 said OHSU is in trouble for the huge debt their students incurr.)
That being said, I'm still checking portal multiple times each day and liked the feel of Portland as a city. I think I must secretly hope to get in even though I've been accepted at UW and another school. I'm often the type of girl to go with gut feelings.
Just my two cents.

Yea.. I think med schools are well loved and very prestigious in the regions they are in. So I wouldn't be surprised Oregonians (?) consider OHSU to be high up there with.. it probably is. I didnt even know that vandy pritzker upenn and mt sinai were crazy schools until i started applying. Even though i live in cali, I've heard great things about OHSU though.. didnt apply because I didn't think I had a chance.

Hey guys, I'm looking for some opinions of people who have not spent their entire life growing up around OHSU. I lived and breathed OHSU/Doernbecher when I was a teen - so much so that I can get from basically any place in OHSU to another without ever going outside - and so I feel like I have an internal bias when comparing OHSU to any other school.

What I want to know is your impression of OHSU on interview/second look day when compared to other schools. You don't have to name schools, but in general, how did the facilities compare, the overall feel you got about the school, and whatever else you may want to include. If current students want to chime in about why they chose OHSU over other schools, that would be great too.

I want to get some other people's take because I'm trying to plan ahead. I'm ranked fairly high on UCF’s waitlist and really loved everything about the school, so I'm trying to proactively compare the schools in case I get accepted to OHSU and UCF around May 15th (among other schools, but I think OHSU and UCF are my best shots). I don't want just 2 weeks or w/e to think about it, because at this point I honestly don't know what I would do as both schools seem excellent, but are complete polar opposites and each seem to have their pro’s and con’s.

Also, if you don't want to post publicly for whatever reason, please PM me as I really need some help.

Thanks!

Woah, what a small world. I am also on UCF's waitlist...

Frankly, UCF is pretty damn amazing. I interviewed at 5 Florida schools, and every single one had praise for UCF. Some of them even mentioned things along the lines of "we may not be UCF but we have ____". They are going to explode the next few years. We're both pretty darn lucky to be in the running there and OHSU 🙂 Though truth be told, I've already plucked out all my eyelashes while wishing for an OHSU seat 😉

Regarding comparisons, I interviewed at 11 schools this year - a mix of in-state, private, and OOS. The 'nicest' ones could not easily be bucketed into any one of those categories - the private schools were no nicer than the state schools, with the exception of perhaps landscaping, which at OHSU is a non-issue courtesy of the pacific NW climate.

Beyond that, the big thing I looked for was not 'newness of the facilities', as this really doesn't matter....instead, I looked for student body composition, the 'feeling' I got from the places, whether I could be happy/healthy there, etc. Were the people I met people with whom I could see myself learning medicine? That was the big question. I found affirmative answers at OHSU, Case, and Tulane, and to a much lesser extent at Pritzker. These schools ALL attracted an older, experienced crowd - a group that had a lot of life experience, commitment, and perspective to accompany their intelligence.

Regarding price, we're talking about medical school. While you can't ignore the money, you shouldn't be in this for money. That doesn't mean you should go take out $400K in loans and make rash decisions aimlessly, but rather, one should remember that all medical schools (unless you're lucky enough to be in-state in a place like California) will cost +/- $35-50K/yr. OHSU for that matter is $44K/52K IS/OOS. In the long run, and again unless you're lucky enough to be from a place where IS is substantially cheaper, I can't see choosing on price if we're talking about a $15K/yr difference. $15K/yr will be a total of $60K difference at the end of it all, which will, after compound interest, amount to about 2 more years worth of payments. For me, I'm not even sure a $20K difference would change my mind. I'd rather go somewhere I like, and be happy, than go somewhere cheaper just to save what is (IMHO) an insignificant amount of cash in the grand scheme of things. Finally, if you're concerned about the money, HPSP is open to pretty much anyone. 4 years of service post-residency will knock it out in one fell swoop.

My two cents. My top three (OHSU, Case, Tulane) will each cost me about $50K/yr. Cost of living as a student in those three towns is about the same too. Reputation is comparable with Case possibly edging out the other two. Beyond that, it all comes down to the students and the town. While I haven't made my final decision yet, Portland/OHSU seems to be the clear winner.

I'm wondering if we might get some kind of flurry of notifications tomorrow. Thinking that perhaps the AdCom met last week and some decisions were made but those decisions have been sitting on someone's desk waiting for them to come back from vacation and update folks' portal statuses.

I hope Dianyla is right and many early February interviews like you 2/8ers hear some goo news today or at least this week!

Some on here are about to blow a gasket. I hope there is good news coming for all that are still waiting.

Indeed. My gasket is definitely about to blow. I can't wait to be able to tell people where I'm going with certainty.

I just want it to be May 15th so I can start making some concrete plans :bang:

This is exactly how I feel. I just hate the big family gatherings where everyone is asking you all these questions and all you can say is "I don't know". Ahhhhh! :beat:

Congratulations!! Did you already get an email? My portal hasn't changed 🙁

This had better not be an April Fools Day joke! 😀

Has anybody recently talked to the admissions office to see where we are at with total acceptances handed out?

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Accepted!!!! Omfg!!! I'm crying!!!

That is great man! Now go sign up for genetics and plan the rest of your life for the next four years hahaha!

Thanks everyone, no joke. I actually emailed them to tell them to extend my sincere thanks to the entire office and to let them all know they just made a full grown man cry! (No suprise for the OHSU beer club, tho, lol.)

Yes, I just happened to refresh my email and saw an email from them. It was so short I thought it was a rejection letter and got so flustered it took me like 2 minutes to read and realize it was an acceptance. I haven't even checked the portal. I've been busy telling everyone and their dog about the acceptance and convincing my friends, who know how much I like to joke, that it's not an April fools joke. LoL

Rachel, I'm going to apply for the student co-op first. You can't beat $250 a month. That'll cut my COA by a crap ton.

Was the email titled "SAVE $200 on the Full HD 3D Handycam + more deals"?? Because I just got that one and just about jumped out of my skin

Seriously, congrats dude! I'm so happy for you!!

I really, really hope you hear something soon, along with Rachel and Diane. I'd love to have our entire beer group admitted!

This is so awesome! I'm sorry I doubted you - been wading through all kinds of fake pregnancy announcements and similar shenanigans today!

So happy for you! And so nice to get the news early!

No apology necessary! You certainly weren't the only one! One of my mentors, the Chief of Hospital Medicine here, sent me an email from his phone chastizing me if it was a prank. LoL I'm a jokster for sure, so a bunch of peeps were skeptical lol.

Congrats Guero!

Now we just need the rest of the SDN gang to get acceptances as well!

Thanks again everyone! I'm totally with you on that dsoz and HelpingHandz: :sing-song cheer:: Hey! Ho! SDN, let's go!

Just saw your post on the facebook page. Great news man, congrats Guero.

Any updates, bluepotato?

(I can't help but think of a normal potato that's turned blue from, err, waiting so long.)

As I had suspected, these must be updates from last week's AdCom meetings. So hopefully they'll be getting to the 2/15 cohort this week? :xf: :xf:

I hope so! Just not a refuse status please...

No updates here, despite my obsessive portal refreshing. I think I'm going to take my kid to the library and try not to think about it for a while. Guero and I had different interviewers so it's possible they haven't even made a decision on my file yet. I hope we all get some good news soon!

Yeah, that sounds like a great idea. I'd HAVE to do something like that! I'm praying for you as much as an agnostic can!

Bt dubz? And all this time I thought I totally flubbed my one-on-one. This just goes to show all of you how your impression means nothing! LoL Don't obsess over how you did. You just can't tell!

Lord I still have butterflies in my tummy and am still on the verge of tears. LoL I feel like I'm pregnant or something, pregnant with an acceptance packet! Hahaha

HOLD. Also interviewed on 2/8.... Now for some long awaited waiting. Glad to still be in the running. Congratulations to my fellow interviewees who got accepted!!!!!

CONGRATS! I hope we can have a beer sometime. Maybe whether I get in or not, because I'll probably still be in town if I don't get in this cycle.

Almost 4pm and still nothing here 🙁 Maybe they haven't gotten to the reject pile yet. Or maybe they're driving to my house to give me my acceptance packet in person 🙄

Congrats! At least for us late folks, May 15th isn't that far off. I don't want to imagine what it must be like to be on hold from November to May...

Was your interviewer male or female, AM or PM?

Nghhhh! Or maybe your interviewer didn't get to last week's meetings? Still hoping for you. :xf:

Interviewed in the afternoon, had my one-on-one with a lady doc. It is good that it's only 6 weeks out....but still, it's agonizing. Looks like they're still right on schedule for post-interview notifications, so you should be hearing soon too. Good luck!

Do you mean a gynecologist?

haha...no, sorry for the poor choice of words. I meant a female doctor. She's in family medicine.
Oh, I see.

True story: My g-g-g-great grandmother became a doctor in the 1870s. I have a photo of her labeled "Mrs. Dr. Jane Doe". 🙄

haha...totally didn't sense your sarcasm there.

Well Dianyla, looks like its almost time for us to hear back 😉

Put on hold. Withdrew. Good luck to to everybody. It's been a pleasure.

Could there be two days of good news in a row, stay tuned to find out...
