I think that he may have just been talking about those who are scored that afternoon and happen to fall above the current threshhold score. From what I understand, people can hear at anytime if they fall above the threshhold, and those (regardless of the date inteverviewed) who come above the threshhold due to lowering of it at an adcom meeting find out on the following Friday. I was hoping that Thursday had been one of the lucky days where they lower the mark. And yes she would have heard via email.

Thanks...I guess the person was rather certain that she'd be above the threshold. If she had strong stats, that would make sense since I think females have an edge. One of my friends with lower stats than I have was accepted about 2 days after interviewing. She thinks her gender was a push.

She's also very attractive, so that probably didn't hurt, either. 😛

I do wonder what their rubric is?

Hoping for some 😍

Yeah, I really wish I knew the rubric as well. When did you interview? I was mid-December. I am so tired of trying to figure out how adcom's minds work. haha.

I interviewed in October.

I should change my suggested rubric to:

25 pts for MCAT
25 pts for GPA
30 pts for interview
10 pts for instate residency
5 pts for diversity (gender, URM)
5 pts for ECs

Someone earlier on this thread had stated that they score on a 10 point scale, 3 points for GPA/MCAT scores, 3 points for extracurriculars, and 4 points for the interview.

Are you sure that the post wasn't about USA? They use a 10 pt scale...but theirs is:

3 pts MCAT
3 pts GPA
4 pts interview

Quick word of advice, there are many on here who are concerned about their "scores"- mcat, gpa... Guys, this is not what gets you into medical school. Sure, it can keep you out, but it certainly isn't the only thing that is going to get you in. If you scored on the lower side (26,27) no worries! If you did something significant OUTSIDE of the classroom that would be interesting to the committee (some unique service project, led a volunteer project, etc.), I guarantee you would be favored over someone who scored a 34, 4.0 gpa with nothing extra on his CV. Also, the UAB committee can see through people who are entering the medical field for the wrong reasons. They want caring, compassionate physicians, and if you portray that in your interview day you will have no problem getting accepted. UAB scores their applicants on a ten point scale. 3 points for "scores" (mcat, gpa). 3 points for extracurriculars (volunteering, research, service,etc.). And finally 4 points for interview. So again, stop worrying about each others "scores" of those who got accepted...because in all honesty it is not that relevant at this point.
(UNLESS you are out of state or MD/PHD!)

Not thinking USA
 
Looking for a little advice. I still have not heard anything about an interview, and I am concerned this is the last week or two that they will offer anymore if they are not done already. Would anyone recommend calling the admissions office to ask them a status about my application, or to make sure they have not over looked my application? I am an instate applicant with 30 MCAT 3.6 science and cumulative GPA, two research projects, tons of shadowing, volunteering, and etc...

Not a perfect applicant, and they might see something negative in my application. I just don't want to wait until its too late to give them a call.

Any thoughts?
 
I would definitely call them. At this point, what's it going to hurt?
 
Sad day. Maybe e-mailing them? Or calling at a specific time of day? Usually offices anywhere are better about answering the phones in the morning, like between 9 and 11.

Gauging from last year's thread, it appears the last couple of IIs should be going out within the next few days, with the last interviews to be held during the first week of March...if the pattern holds, anyway. Good luck.
 
Accepted this afternoon!!!! Interviewed yesterday, SO excited. Also, I don't have fantastic stats so this is proof that there is much more to the process than just the numbers!

..... And since they never have more than 176 acceptances out at a time, a large portion of those could be in the hands of OOS students. Thus, the whole thing becomes a waiting game for a lot of people, and tons are accepted off the waitlist in the end. A few years ago I think they misjudged their OOS acceptances and ended up sending too few and receiving too little interest, so they are now overshooting on the OOS acceptances if anything. Just my speculation, though.

Went back to reread Smoothrow's post, but I'm wondering if his statement that "they never have more than 176 acceptances out at one time." That doesn't sound right. Schools always over-accept. They don't accept the exact number and then go to the WL as soon as one person declines. That's too inefficient and results in a lower quality class.

Schools have models that tell them that if they want to matriculate 175 students, then they need to accept at least XXX students (maybe 250) and then they'll likely have to go to the WL for an add'l XX more.
 
Smooththrow is correct as Dr. Smith told my interview group the same thing. The rationale they gave is because they have a set amount of people going to the different campuses the third year.
 
I just recieved an interview for the last interview day next Thursday. is this pretty much interviewing for the waitlist? any thoughts would be much appreciated. thanks!

Congrats and good luck! Guess I'm out for the count. 🙁 I'll go ahead and take this as a rejection. This will be my last post (unless someone cancels and they miraculously offer me an II). Good luck everyone. It's an awesome school indeed.
 
So the last interview day is this Thursday the 28th?
 
next Thursday the 7th is the last day, at least that is what the email invite says.

So, does that suggest that after the 7th, the remaining acceptances will be going out rather soon?

Absolutely not. From what I hear, only 10 to 15ish in state students have been accepted. But keep in mind a significant portion if the class does come from the waitlist. Good luck next week!

You'll definitely hear this month! According to the AAMC traffic rules for admission-
"By March 30 of the matriculation year, March 15 for M.D.-Ph.D. programs, each school or program [must] have issued a number of offers of acceptance at least equal to the expected number of students in its first-year entering class and have reported those acceptance actions to the AAMC Section for Medical School Application Services."

Crossing my fingers for those still waiting!
 
how many acceptances do you think will be given out? would you say they've filled at least 50% of the spots?
 
Can any current students give me an idea of what it is like to attend UASOM? I was accepted to Bham campus in Dec, but am not sure the school is my "fit". What sets this school apart from the rest, and what makes it a top medical school? Is it solely research, or a combination of research/clinical education that stand out. I have heard mixed reviews, so I want to clarify what I know.
 
Anyone know what it means at this point for those of us waiting to be considered for an interview? ...What are the chances we will get an interview invite at a later point / when will this likely occur?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but this Thursday is the last interview date. Unless by some miracle someone cancels you will not receive an interview from UAB this year.

I believe some schools have a few late interview sessions if they end up losing a lot of their admitted students to other schools. I could be wrong, but I've heard of people interviewing rather late in the spring at other schools..

I hear ya though.. I was expecting a rejection, but my status recently changed to this which is somewhat odd at this point.

Anyone else know anything about this?

The show is the chief fundraiser for our student run clinic that we opened this fall. We have raised about $90k the past two years. Most of the videos are typically humorous, poking fun at some of the awkward things about medical school. Enjoy.

So, this week is the last of the interviews, right. So, hopefully that means that final decisions regarding those who have been interviewed should be made within a week or so, right? Interviewed in October - fingers crossed! This SOM is awesome!
