Got the hold email today as well. At least we now know where we stand...

I wonder if sth is wrong with my application since I got zero II so far... GPA 3.87. 34M

Same as everyone else, got the "under consideration" email. This is my third pre-interview hold type of email.

Obviously the writing score man. Can't get into med school with an M.

I was told by many that no one looks at the writing score anyway.... Also starting jan of 2013 they will not score writing sample anymore... It's interesting if they consider writing scores from past MCATs next year application

Don't worry I was just yanking your chain 🙂. Your stats look great, I'm sure the interviews will be coming soon.

i haven't touched this school's secondary for a month and a half now :/ do y'all think its too late to give it a go?

Strange, I'm not even complete yet according to their status page and I just got this hold email?

Don't ever give up. However, unless you are Arizona or have top 10% stats, don't have too high of hopes. Did you see the number of pre-interview holds that just cropped up yesterday? I got one and I had my secondary in on 8/4.

It looks like U of A Tucson feels like they have met their quota of OOS and are letting the rest of us know "Thanks, but we will call you... Later... Maybe..."

You just may want to save your $75 for a place where it may do you more good.

But don't give up hope. If this is a place where you really want to go, then by all means, send in your secondary. From the sounds of it, by holding onto the secondary for more than a month you don't have strong feelings for this school.

I also got the hold email yesterday. OOS, 35M, 3.95 GPA. Submitted Secondary 8/28.

OT: I love, love, LOVE your avatar 👍

einstein1990, thanks for scoping last year's thread ... makes me feel much more hopeful. And gets me to stop obsessing: "But what does it MEAN???"

Those notices went to in-state applicants too. Three of my friends applying this year received them, and we all thought they were a shoe-in for an interview.

They're changing their game plan here and it's hard to tell what they're up to.

I feel like I may be on the hook. Arizona can't be with me... right now.

Congrats. Good luck with the interview. MMI can be really fun if you let it. 🙂

Did MMI at MSU and will do it again at VTCSOM later this month. Hopefully I'll be a pro by November haha

Hold email on the 10th. I wonder where they are planning on going with this...

Hold status two days ago. I was a little surprised, but what can you do? Stats are OOS, 34S, 3.95+

I submitted to Phoenix on 9/24 and got my II 10/1. 3.5 GPA/30R AZ resident URM. Good luck!

Hi,

I was wondering if any of the current med student at this school could let us know how your fourth year schedule is like for this school specifically? Is it structured or do get to do or choose what you want to do? Thanks!

Can you provide some information about the interview

Hi,

I was wondering if any of the current med student at this school could let us know how your fourth year schedule is like for this school specifically? Is it structured or do get to do or choose what you want to do? Thanks!

you get to choose what you want to do for the most part. there are a few requirements in order to graduate but they are very flexible.

the first requirement is a surgical subspecialty covering basically any type of surgery (ENT, Plastics, Vascular, Optho, etc.) to even anesthesia and a few other things. this elective is at least 3 weeks and can be done in either the 3rd year or the 4th year.

the second requirement is a sub-internship. this is most likely going to be in the specialty that you plan on going into and therefore is a "requirement" in name only - you will be doing one no matter what you go into.

the third requirement is an either/or in emergency medicine/critical care. there is an EM/CC elective that combines the two or you can simply do an ICU elective.

If you want to get fancy, you can double dip and make it an ICU sub-internship. If you want to get really fancy you can do a sub-internship in the surgical ICU (not sure if it counts towards all three but wouldn't that be nifty?).

otherwise you have to get to 35 weeks worth of credit, which can be made in a variety of ways in addition to just electives. this allows ample time to interview as well as take step II, do aways, take interesting electives, all while still enjoying your last year and not sweating the small stuff.

let me know if you have more questions!

II last week. OOS, GPA mid 3's, MCAT mid 30's. Complete end of July.

Good luck to everyone still awaiting news.

Does anyone that has interviewed remember if they told us when they will get back to us about our admissions status? Thank you.

They told us they plan on meeting in October some time and not to expect anything till Nov. I don't think it will be as fast a turn around as Phoenix. Looking at last years thread it looked like first notices went out in Dec. It would be awesome if they moved the process up but Im not sure why they would.

theory: there are no december interviews this year so in effect they shifted all things up a month from last year?. . .though this is not confirmed :0

I'm going to pretend this was written to me and answer because as a 4th year patiently waiting for residency interviews, i have nothing better to do.

Hi spelledout,

i wish you had an MDApps as informative and inspirational as supportivehubby and i didn't actually ask you these questions and am somewhat apprehensive about you answering. I hope to enter medical school this cycle and wanted to know more about Tuscon. You didn't say that a lot of the MS1 are active and love the outdoors but hopefully it's still true?

Reading this post, and especially this shout out.

Just got an II!! 🙂

I was one of the many who received a Hold email on the 10th.
In State Complete 8/25 🙂
Very excited for this one!

congrats! gives the rest of us hope!

IS here, interviewed 9/21

I overheard on campus (I go to UofA) that UACOM may accept less instate students with high stats because they assume those students will be offered spots at other schools so they won't even bother with them? If anyone else knows about this please share!😕

That's really unfortunate. A lot of those instate students with high stats may actually want to go to UA for the low tuition/instate experience.

Who knows what the deciding factors are, but I think the adcoms are looking at grades and MCAT scores with a grain of salt. In my opinion the essays, experiences and MMI are starting to carry more and more weight.

It makes sense. Most of the doctors I shadowed were not encyclopedias of knowledge, outside of their specialty, but they all possessed a wonderful ability to connect with people and exercise good judgment.

By the way, does anyone have an update on when we might get a decision for the first interview group?

To indirectly address this- I've heard the same rumor at my state school, University of New Mexico. Pretty sure this is just a rumor, but I doubt any adcom member would confirm this if it were actually true. As an anecdote, I know an IS person with 4.0/39 that only got in to UNM last year, so I doubt this claim is true.

Even if this isn't the case at UA, you made it this far, so congrats and good luck!

I agree with you however, I applied to UNM and got an email saying they were only taking IS this year.

This is a total rumor. U of A wants qualified students, especially those with ties to arizona who are more likely to stay and practice in AZ. There are rumors like this every year at U of A and ASU but they are simply not true.

If somebody is a good fit they will be selected. High scores (and low scores to a point) will not decrease people's chances of getting in. It is the total package. The school is not going to choose to pass somebody up because they may go somewhere else that is not how it works.

MD candidate U of A Tucson

Best of luck to everybody, stay positive!!

That's every year, including their MD/PhD program, barring familial ties/circumstances. :-( I really, really, really wanted to apply.

I know a guy who killed a guy who said a dozen people will receive acceptances around 11/5.

True. That's always been one major difference between UNM and UA. UNM is a slightly smaller school (100 students per class) and has rarely accepted OOS students without strong ties to the state. They're very dedicated to keeping a good chunk of their graduates in the state.
