Anyone else get an email with the secondary essays in it? I know they were already posted by Tara, but just curious.

Yep I got one too.

Just curious, does question 4 have no character limit? It is the socio-economic, diversity, culture, etc. question

Tara,

I just received the secondary from UA Phoneix! 🙂

The link that is supposed to take me to the required courses does not go where it is supposed to. 🙁

I am not sure what is wrong.

You should use this link for the courses. The link is broken for me too, but I searched around and found it.

Also, class of 2011 had a student from Washington who was a graduate from Washington University. What school is that? haha

I am from Washington and have never heard of it! Was it University of Washington or Washington State University?

Wash U is a private univ in St. Louis, MO.

No correlation to residency of our student body/composition.

I will not have a Bachelor's degree by May 2013, but I will have a doctorate will that suffice in place of the bachelor's degree?

Hi macj1014,

Yes, grad/doctorate degree supersedes bachelorette degree.

The "main essays" are 350 words max.

Have a great weekend!

Got to love that auto correct

Hi Tara!

I'm new to SDN but have been reading your comments to posts and really appreciate you helping us out! I had a question about the following from the secondary application:

3. Elaborate on what has occurred within the last 12-18 months that has influenced your goal and preparation for a career in medicine. (350 words)

Can you elaborate on something that has already been mentioned in your personal statement, or should you provide insight into other factors (not in your personal statement) that have also influenced your decision?

Thank you! 🙂

Okay Tara, I finished writting my answers to the prompts--you can bring the website back up.

😉

Hi Tara,

I'm looking at the last question that states, "What do you want the Admissions Committee to make sure they know about you, particularly if you have variances in your application (grade discrepancies', institutional/criminal actions, gaps in school/employment timeline)?" and am curious if this is a required question - as in you have to provide and answer, or is it optional?

I do not have any major variances in my application and believe my application, including the other questions in the secondary, is very representative of who I am as a person and applicant.

I'm just curious cause if it is required, I'm going to have to do some thinking as to what else may be of value for the admissions committee to know.

Thanks! I really appreciate the openness you are providing this year on the forum.

The Supplemental is exactly as it is titled - a supplement to what we already know about you - so take FULL advantage of sharing new information or expanding upon what you were limited to share on the primary.

Hope this helps!

Great question - imagine this as an interview with an admissions committee and your unique opportunity to share what makes you different than the other 3,000 applicants. Everyone is academically able, everyone has done something amazing to help others, everyone has led a club/organization, but what makes you unique to fulfilling our mission and goals as an urban medical school in one of the largest cities in America. I am certain there is something you can share that we have not already learned about during the primary or supplemental essays.

Have the actual secondaries been sent out, or just the email we received with the prompts?? Thanks!

Does anyone know of the importance of the picture were supposed to send in? I am trying to decide if I should goto some photo place or just use my camera phone.

Thanks

It feels like Christmas morning right now...just waiting for those secondaries to come out. 👍

I wouldn't use your camera phone unless it takes fairly nice pictures. Most schools will want a photo of you, and I believe they are usually used to help faculty remember your face/link your face with your app during the application process. Here at Phoenix, the photos show up again during 2nd look. Beyond that, I don't know what the specific importance of the photo is at every school.

You don't need to get a professional photo taken, but make sure that in the picture YOU look reasonably professional. Just like any part of the app process, you want to come across well. There are a lot of threads about this in Pre-allo if you want more specific advice 🙂

Also, I just started at UA Phx this year so feel free to post here or PM me if you have any questions I might be able to answer.

Thanks for the advice I'll put my best image out there. Just got a hair cut, know I just need to loose 20lbs in the next couple days. haha. How about interview suits? People our telling me to put down some money but I was hoping to dress in some Sunday attire. Any advice on where to go buy a suit?

We are releasing Supplemental Application invites tomorrow - will send a small batch (no more than 30) to Arizona residents before having the technological confidence to send more the following day.

It may take us several days to get all invites out.

Hang in there with us - almost there!

OOOH! Pick me for the second round. I can get it back before 5:00 the same day. My essays are essentially complete, I just will have one more person proof them before I send them off.

Hi Tara, I just wanted to clarify something just to make sure. For the requirements it says that 1 semester/4 credits of biology must be upper division. If I have a semester of upper division bio, but it was only 3 credit hours, will this work?

I'm pretty sure the "/" means "or" but just wanted to be 100%

hi tara,
is physio absolutely mandatory? i have 5 other biology courses that i have taken, but none of them overlap with what i would learn in physio.

if it is mandatory, how can i indicate that i will take it before matriculation on my secondary?

You will have space to 1) request a course equivalent review - may or may not be determined that a course you've already taken can fulfill the Physio requirement. From your. Ore, though, doesn't sound like you will make the request and 2) you will also have space to indicate future enrollment in a required course.

Hi Tara,

I'm polishing off my secondaries and had a little worry. When I google UA med in Phoenix, the first link for a long time has been the standard UA med link with a small reference to the Phoenix campus. Now the new site is up, but it doesn't have nearly as much information yet. I'm wondering if the programs that that applied for the Phoenix campus before separate accreditation will still be available, specifically the diversity programs in the links below:

http://medicine.arizona.edu/outreach/outreach
http://medicine.arizona.edu/outreach/international-outreach

Thanks!

I have been compulsively checking my email and this forum. UACOM-PHX and all their playing "hard to get"...its really killing my productivity.

Submitted. :xf:

Don't know if any of you follow the UA-Tucson forum. But for their app, after submission it says they're missing your transcripts/LOR. Same deal with this one.

Good luck everyone.

That's frustrating to hear - we asked vendor to disable this feature, as it doesn't apply to our process and during testing, it was working.

Oh, the joys of technology!

Hi Tara

I just submitted today--my clinical letter should be available on Monday. I noticed it said I need to submit at least 1 letter before my file will start getting processed, would you recommend I submit one today and then the rest on Monday? Or will it not even matter.

Also, is there a maximum number of letters I can send? I was planning to send 5 total, is this too many?

Thank you in advance!

Submitted today! Hoping for good news soon!!!!

Hi Tara,

I was curious as to whether or not I should withdraw my application due to prerequisite requirements.

For the Biology section, I will have taken:

Genetics and Biotechnology
General Biology 1
General Biology 2
Molecular Biology- Upper Division
Neurobiology- Upper Division
Marine Biology
and Upper division research credit in Biology

Unfortunately, I'm not sure any of these will count for my physiology requirement and will not be able to enroll in any more courses before matriculating (Already at 20 units for spring semester and 10 for summer :/)

Please let me know, I'd greatly appreciate it :]

Tara, does animal physiology count for the physiology credit? I just want to make sure that it doesn't have to be strictly human physiology. Here is the class description:

This is an animal physiology course focusing on vertebrates, but the higher levels of invertebrates (mollusks and arthropods) will also be considered at some times. The emphasis will be on the physiological mechanisms used by animals to meet the common challenges of circulation, gas exchange, nutrient supply and metabolism, temperature regulation, water balance, and locomotion in the context of their environments.
