I am sorry to hear that you were rejected by UA Phoenix. It is a great school, and I enjoyed the time that I spent there interviewing. I am hopeful to get out of "post-interview hold" status, but I am not going to hold my breath either. I know that with the addition of 72 more applicants to the discussion pool that there will be a significant portion that will have done better than I did on the interview.

I was rejected pre-interview by UA Tucson. I did not go to that thread and sow sour grapes. I also wondered about how I could be interviewed by one school, but straight up rejected from the other. My stats were the same, and my secondary essays, while different, were similar for each school. I was finished with my Tucson secondary in early August, and my Phoenix secondary wasn't until late August.

BTW, I did get an interview to UA Phoenix with a less than 32 MCAT. You can see my GPA/MCAT in my MDApps. I don't think that the admissions is trying to cherry pick the highest stats. I think they are truly trying to put together a class that works well with each other.

Again, I am sorry that you were disappointed with the decision that they made about your application. I wish you luck at the schools that you have left on your list of possibilities.

dsoz

I had no intention of being negative. I wish everyone luck and know that if you attend the UA Phoenix, you'll be learning from the best with the best resources.

Are these pre-interview or post?

Pre-Interview, OOS 🙁

Was hoping UA-Phx would look past my stats and interview me, but then again I can't blame the adcoms at this school or any school, my app probably wasn't even that thoroughly read because my stats were so low. Maybe next year.

HA IM ACCEPTED!!!!! YEAAAY IM THE BEST...... jk straight rejected

trick o treat!!!

our candies were rejection letters 🙁
I wish the school rejected us after Halloween....... now I'll just be depressed on this holiday

Looks like it was tricks this year 🙁

Sorry guys! Hope you all get in somewhere!

Are the rejections snail mail or email?

Sent from my iPod using SDN Mobile app. Please excuse the typos.

Some harsh words popping up in this thread... 🙁

To everyone who just got bad news, good luck to you all! I have no doubts that everyone will make it. 👍

Rejected and misunderstood....

+1

Thought I was a solid fit for this school. I guess I should have picked the other AZ school to apply to. I could only afford one of their secondaries. I chose unwisely.

Aaaaand, rejected! It looks like a bunch of us fell into this category. This school was in my top 5 of the 34 to which I applied. What a bummer, talk about unrequited love. But as Tara said, it's that conglomeration of ineffable aspects they're looking for, not just numbers. I harbor no ill will and definitely intend to apply here for residency. Who knows, maybe then I'll have that conglomeration. ;-)

I'm unsubscribing today. So, first, to Tara, thank you for your unwavering presence and bountiful help throughout this process. You were awesome. To all those accepted, I extend my warmest congrats. And to everyone, see you all on the other side of MS4 at PGY1.

All - no applicant is released without having been read by members of the admissions committee.

Thank you for this. I'm just surprised that the UA Phoenix appears to be looking for an entirely different student than the UA Tucson (based only on my outcome and the opposite of one of my colleagues).

Will you still offer a presentation to those applicants not accepted explaining reasons UA Phoenix decided to not offer an interview (in general terms)?

Giving feedback/applicant (pre-interview) is very, very tough to manage because of the volume of students in this situation. We are working to create an assessment tool that can help better prepare applicants for our screening process conducted by our admissions committee. Is targeted for release at Admissions site - phoenixmed.arizona.edu

All - applicants, on average, apply to 14-15 schools. The number of applications to medical schools is increasing, so you must be as prepared as possible and speak directly to the schools through the supplemental application. Letters must be from people that KNOW you, not just a stock letter of generic support. Prereq's courses should demonstrate excellent (A-B) mastery of core concepts. Experiences should highlight your life outside of academics, ability to lead/work within a team, commitment to your community, understanding of patient care/physician relationship.

I submitted Sept 9th I believe. I have not heard anything since i.e. rejection, hold, or invite. Where does that place applicants such as myself? It seems like a large portion of people are in this category.

Interview invites will be made through late-Dec. Pre-interview releases occur through this same time frame. Yesterday was a larger group of releases than announced in previous weeks, which is why it may seem that final action has even taken for every one else.

Tara, although I've been rejected I have to say thank you for being here! You've definitely comforted us (at least me) and made the process much more transparent--which is not common. You and your efforts are appreciated! 🙂

As an aside: maybe I should have chosen UA over ASU for undergrad? Jk

I totally agree with this.

I just got a surprising congratulations letter in the mail from Dean Flynn as a follow up from the acceptance e-mail and call! Amazing, personalized letter that just got me excited about attending UA Phoenix next year all over again.

These small details that show how much the school cares about its students are definitely a big part of why I plan to matriculate next year. 😍

Gogo iBear! \o/

Please don't laugh.

I am a non-trad, second career student. I have applied late, from reading threads I now realize it is expected to apply in June rather than October:laugh:

My AMCAS is not yet verified yet. My LORs are received and I am prepared to send out my secondary the day after I receive it.

Tara, and all, is there still any hope for such a later applicant? I like to believe I have a pretty interesting application due mostly to my clinical experience.

Thank you!

Here's the impact of your timeline and how we attempt to "protect" the integrity on our rolling review process.

Any application received on any day, first through the end, is reviewed and is given the same amount of effort to identify the academic and no -academic qualities we desire in an entering class. With this said, we have a finite number of interviews to offer and those coming later in the application process are competing for the last seats available. I'm a visual person and this is my description of the review:interview ratio.

A pond is filled at the beginning of the season - it's a rather large body of water that can provide a drink to 430 awesome animals. Not ever animal bum rushes the pond at the same time and while we try to conserve the pond, but once the season opens and animals are let in, the pond begins to shrink. By the end of the season, the pond is down to a few gallons and only given to the strongest animal standing.

So, you must be a strong applicant to push out the animals standing at the gates, waiting for their drink. If you are, then your chances are good. If you not, then it's likely you'll be left without a drink from the pond.

Take-away message: you're not livestock! But, our pond is drying up and we live in a desert, so be quick to respond and hope that all you've done will open the gate for you.

I like the 430 awesome animals part. Very nice of you Tara.🙂

Good morning Tara, I sent you a PM explaining my situation specifically. Can you respond when your time permits?

Thanks

When did you interview? SUPER nervous for hearing back (interviewed 10/15)

When did you interview? SUPER nervous for hearing back (interviewed 10/15)

I interviewed the first day (9/17), so I heard back a while ago. That's why I was surprised by the snail mail letter--I thought we'd only be getting e-mails!

You should be hearing back in three days or so, right? Good luck! :xf:

Yeah good luck to everyone waiting to hear back. 11/9 is only 2.5 days away! Deep breaths..

Hoping for good news this Friday, I know the next two days are going to go by slowly. Good luck to everyone else that will be under consideration (especially those of us who are on hold from the first round)!

in the last email i got put on hold for further consideration. the email also said to please not send updates to your file at this time. Does this include letters of interest? this is possibly my top choice after that interview day and would be giddy with an acceptance. just want to make sure they know how interested i am from OOS but dont want to annoy them especially if an LOI is considered and update.

If I was truly a gunner, I would tell you to send something in. But since I am not, I am going to tell you to DON'T DO IT. They asked you to not send stuff in, so don't send them stuff.

After interview day it was also my first choice. Even beating out my state school. But I am just going to ride this train to the end. Waiting in the hold pool...

UA Phoenix Med Admissions Committee meets tomorrow to determine the 20-25 students who we would like to invite into our entering class. Applicants deferred from last round are under equal consideration to those who have interviewed since mid-October. Therefore, we have roughly 100 students actively being discussed over 3 hours of deliberation.

It's an exhausting process knowing that the result will not be met with fanfare from everyone we've met thus far. I cannot stress enough the importance of keeping engaged in your experiences and activities throughout the season so that you remain committed to medicine long after your application has been submitted.

No updates are needed at this time. Please respect this request and remain strong that you've worked hard and you hope that you stand out among your peers for all the right reasons.

Good luck everyone!

Tara,

About what time do you expect the committee to be finished meeting and phone calls to be going out?

I'll wrap up the meeting in the early afternoon and try to start calls by the end of the day.

Very nervous about tomorrow, but it is quite reassuring to know that those of us on hold are at least put under equal consideration. I know all of us here appreciate the transparency of the process, so thank you Tara 🙂

Anyone complete around mid September receive and interview invite yet?

All decision have been sent.

---20 offers of acceptance (10% from deferred pool)
---Few post-interview rejections
---All others deferred

Next meeting is December 14.

put on hold as well. great school though. really enjoyed the interview.

Hi Tara,

Thank you so much for being so transparent. I was wondering if Phoenix will be interviewing anymore people. I apologize in advance if this has already been answered. I've been complete since mid August with no answer. Thank you for taking the time!

Hope you all enjoy your weekend!

According to the paper the admissions' office handed out when I interviewed, Phoenix will interview all the way to February 25th. The cycle is far from over.

Again put on hold

*sigh*

+1

But it is better than being rejected. On the bright side, there is still hope. One of the student hosts that I talked to at the interview said that he interviewed early and was in the hold pool until later, like January or February when he was accepted.

That story encourages me every time I think of being in the holding pool.

Yes, we have nearly 100 invites to give thru mid-December. We extend invites weekly, and will being releasing pre-interview applicants at a higher rate from here on out.

Hey Everyone,

I just wanted to let you know that I got an acceptance call yesterday even though I am a re-applicant to medical schools this year and had previously interviewed at UA-PHX in 2011 and was rejected (and then interviewed again this year).

I'm not trying to brag, but I just want to send some encouragement to any of you who may find yourself without an acceptance at the end of this cycle. Realize that there are hundreds (probably thousands) of successful re-applicants every year getting accepted at US medical schools, whether it's at UA-PHX or somewhere else. And trust me, the whole process is so much easier and less stressful as you go through it a second time. I know it's still early in the year and there are still plenty of interviews/acceptances left to give out, but it's never too early to make sure you're paying attention to your current grades (if you're a senior) and/or engaging in a few meaningful shadowing or volunteer experiences just in case you need to reapply. Don't become complacent. Be realistic about your chances, but also realize hundreds are successful re-applicants each year and that admissions committees will likely value the maturity you gained from the process. Best of luck to everyone, don't give up!

Will the December 14th meeting consider those interviewing on both interview dates this month, or just the November 19th interview date?

Hmmm... This just made me realize I probably wont be reviewed till after the new year with an interview date of Dec 10. Maybe Tara can sneak me into that Dec 14 review 🙂

From my interview day, Tara gave a "review process" paper. I will try to summarize it.

Interview days --> committee meeting dates (will review all prior applicants that are on hold + new interviews)

9/17 + 10/1 --> 10/12 (announced on 10/16 per AAMC guidelines)
10/15 + 10/29 --> 11/9
11/19 + 11/26 --> 12/14
12/10 + 12/17 --> 1/11/2013
1/14 + 1/28 --> 2/8
2/11 + 2/25 --> 3/8

EDIT: the 12/10 interview date is ambiguous. It is not clear if it will get put in with the 12/14 committee review or wait until 1/11. The file is released to the committee the day after interview.

final un-ranked wait-list announced on 3/9. (not usually very much movement, sorry folks).
Second look date in early to mid April (usually coincides with baseball game in Phoenix).
Final acceptance confirmation on April 15.

lol, I was just trying to figure this out based on the data in the thread and came up with the correct dates except could not figure out the 12/10 and 12/17 review date. Thanks for the info dsoz!

edit to dsoz's edit: Hope it's 12/14 :xf:
