Hopefully there will be some sort of update today

I've called a couple times and asked about the timeline for decisions on interview invites. If I call at the end of the week, they say the beginning of next week. Then at the beginning of next week, they say the end of the week. Maybe its best to just stop thinking about it. That is how i'm beginning to feel.

We are waiting for the final invited students to confirm their interview day before releasing our final round of students. Otherwise, we run the risk of releasing and then having a cancellation.

Although it may be frustrating to wait, we hope you understand our desire to fill every last spot! Over the year, we have experienced last minute cancellations that have prevented offering the spot to one of you who may have otherwise been invited.

Public Service Announcement in behalf of all medical school admission colleagues: please be kind and courteous to release an interview invitation with at least one week notice. Canceling the day of or night before creates a void that cannot be recovered.

Hi Tara,

Can you tell us how many are currently in the hold pool? Also, do more typically come out of the hold pool during later rounds or is it about the same?

Thanks!

The defer pool size is the majority of those interviewed and we typically see 15-20% per selection round come from this group. The predictability is as difficult to measure as the likelihood of wait list movement.

Hi Tara,

I was wondering if the college of medicine accepts any statement of intent to attend the school prior to being put on the wait list (i.e., applicants in the hold pool send a letter of intent)? Is this advisable?

Thanks in advance!

Letters of interest are always welcomed - updates are not necessary.

Tara,

Would it be advisable to send a handwritten letter or an e-mail when considering a letter of intent?

Just sent my letter of intent! Hoping it gives me the kick I need for next Friday 🙂

Tara-

Are all of the applicants placed on Hold discussed during the Admission Committee meetings? If not, how is it decided which applicants are discussed?

Applicants are reviewed by a team of 9 - each member completes an evaluation of the applicant and renders a "vote of confidence": accept, defer, release from further consideration.

The frequency and evaluation results creates the agenda for each meeting.

Hope that helps.

Keeping consistent and predictable, I'll begin making calls in the late afternoon/early evening, and emails soon there after.

Good luck to everyone being considered today! It's been a long process for all of us but I'm hopeful one of us is rewarded 😀

good luck to all those still waiting to hear back! 🙂

I wonder how many invites remain?

Is there any hope for us in the hold pool?

Tara,

Just wondering what is to come and maybe some details about the hold list and wait list...

I have been on the hold list since the first round. So, I have now been reviewed 5 times and I was wondering if this helps or hurts me in any way. Do we get ranked on the list and just hang out in the spot or does the hold list get re-reviewed every time with people actually moving around on the list? My feeling is that if I have been reviewed each time and not pulled off the list I must be low enough that I must be below the top 20 people on the list and every time new people are added I get moved down.

On to the wait list... How many people are going to be kept for the wait list? I would assume the wait list is going to be ranked, will be know our ranking on the list if we get on it?

I understand if some of these questions can't be answered, but through this process the not knowing is the hardest part. U of A PHX has done the best out of any school at keeping us informed and I appreciate the effort to quell some of my anxiety. Thank you.

There is a ranking order that is based on the selection team members initial impression of your file. Anyone can be recalled for discussion at any selection round and the decision may change, as we've had occur since the initial round. The challenge that you cannot control is the peer competition and the first impression each make that does drive the interest at the subsequent selection meeting, which puts you on a continuous deferral.

It is likely that anyone left after our next round will be placed on a waitlist, and as I said during the wrap-up, you're "position" will not be communicated. We pulled 4-5 students from the waitlist last year between the post-national deadline and start of school (April 15-July 16), so while that's sounds grim, we have no control over the timing of offers from other programs' that our accepted students are holding a waitlist position. It is an anxiety-ridden time for wait listed students and any medical school.

Remember that we have interviewed talented students that a class of 80 is not able to accommodate. It will be a hard decision that weighs heavily on all involved.

Thanks for this information, Tara.

In one of your previous posts, you stated that UA Phoenix Med has a "quasi ranking mixed with balancing the class." Does that mean that although our waitlist 'position' does matter, the Admissions Committee takes into account other factors (i.e. balancing the class) as well?

Also, what exactly does " balancing a class" mean?

The goal is to identify a student body that represents varied backgrounds.

Tara,

Just a few more questions... Do you know the break down from Friday? Also, how many acceptances remain for the March 8th review? Thank you.

Tara,

Will all of the deferred applicants be placed on the waitlist ( if not offered an acceptance)? Also, how many applicants do you anticipate being on the waitlist?

No, not necessarily and the waitlist maybe be upwards of 80-100.

Hopefully you can stop by and talk with the Admissions staff during the Arizona state universities health fairs: ASU today, UA tomorrow and NAU on Thursday.

Hi Tara,
Do you know by when we should be receiving our initial financial aid letter?

Hi Tara,
Do you know by when we should be receiving our initial financial aid letter?

Yes, we will send initial award letters at the end of this month - week of 25th. This will give you loan and grant details. Limited scholarships will be offered at this point.

Have a great day!

I can't believe it...one more day until the decision. Praying for a call from Tara tomorrow!!! 👍🙂

Good luck to everyone still awaiting a decision!!!! 🙂

If you are accepted tomorrow, please don't forget to message me so that I can add you to the Facebook group! There are 17 of us now, including a generous MS1 who is answering all of our excited/annoying questions.

Hope to meet some of you soon!

Only the kids accepted will get phone calls tomorrow, right? Does anyone know about what time of the day they'll be calling? Best of luck to everyone! 😀

It will be after you gave up on studying because you couldn't focus anymore and you finally took a break from SDN so your on way home in a busy bus with bad cell phone reception, day dreaming about what it would be like to get accepted, reflecting on your purpose in life; and all of a sudden you get a call from an unknown number with this person on the other line who says "this is Dr. Cunningham ... (Then it all goes blank)

So probably between 2 and 5 pm.

Good Luck

Last shot at medical school for me today, anyone else in a similar boat?
