Gosh, I really hope my extracurriculars make me stand out! 70% is such a high rate! That makes me feel better.

Come to think of it - since UNMC interviews every IS applicant that applies - the acceptane rate for "competitive candidates" should be even higher - like 90%?? Or is that just wishful thinking on my part? haha

Just browsing the previous years' threads - and one guy got accepted with a 26.

MSAR shows 10th percentile of MCAT for UNMC acceptance is a 27 - UNMC accepted over 200 people in total (IS + OOS + other programs). So that is 20 people with score equal or below yours!

Haha. Wishful thinking. But I really think if we have the passion and above a 3.5/26...you should be all right if you don't have any gaps in your application.

I guess next week is when they will start seriously go over large numbers of applications...

Wouldn't it be such a cruel joke - that us lone pair of applicants driving this UNMC forum gets rejected.....

I just realized that if we don't hear this month or early next month (with either a acceptance - big envelope or rejection - tiny letter), then it's probably a waitlist...which IS a "cruel and unusual punishment" if you ask me.

Why early next month?

I thought they meet every single week until mid-March. By then - you can still be accepted by next year's class (deferred acceptance basically).

Maybe it's flawed population sample but in all previous year's threads, it's been around the middle to end of January/February when they filled their class. It's definitely true - you could get a deferred acceptance in March
 
The good thing is that if you retake the MCAT in 2013, you won't have to take the worthless writing section! When I last took the MCAT, I just wanted to power through to the Biological Science section, but had to contemplate about some mundane awkward topic for the time allocated completely ruining my adrenalin rush. What a buzzkill!

LOL - on my final MCAT attempt - I just used the 1 hour writing section to get some R & R! Basically napped - and randomly BSed some entertaining crap.

Amazingly, I still got a P!

Nice! I did something similar.

Gosh UNMC is such an amazing school. I fell in love with the sim lab when I visited and I am SO excited for the new trauma bay that's going to be built by the time we are students (hopefully).

If we all get in this year, we should organize a bar crawl. I lived in Omaha for years so I know of places (including one with champagne on tap - classy, I know).

That is not a reliable source - because it doesn't say exactly how many IS were interviewed - and how many were offered acceptance. The accepted stats are inflated with large number of accepted out of state applicants with high stats.

For example - last year - only 230 were actually interviewed out of 290. Out of 230, 130 were given acceptances - far more than the 100 something that ended up matriculating. UNMC also waitlisted like 30 people - so really only 60/230 (a quarter) were flat out rejected.

From what I gather (this is a rumor - told by a friend who was informed by her pre-med advisor) - the MCAT for IS is only a 28.5 - GPA is more like a 3.68ish.

The rumor sounds about right.

Anyway I just posted that because you were worried about numbers so I thought I would post the link because it comes straight from UNMCs website. I have my own issues with it as stated earlier in the thread but I don't think you can say it's an unreliable source.
 
total number of acceptances includes people that were accepted and matriculated, people that were accepted and declined, and people accepted off of the waitlist

Most reliable source is US News and World Report Compass. It tells you the average stats for matriculants, not acceptees.

In that regard - the state of New Mexico has by far the lowest MCAT a - 26.7 for average matriculants.

Hey - I don't think it's necessarily unreliable but I do think the UNMC websites data shows the competition is extremely fierce than it truly is. For instance, why not include the data on how many were interviewed?

MSAR would be our best bet.
 
I agree the unmc site probably makes it sound more fierce than it is, and leave out certain info or fail to define certain categories (does accepted mean accepted or students who actually matriculated?), it still is worth taking a look.

Anyway the point I was trying to make (and failed) is that while numbers are important, once in the interview it's more about who you are as an applicant and your motivations. While it's impossible to not worry and be anxious awaiting the letter, going back and trying to compare stats won't help.

My understanding is nearly every IS student is offered an interview.

And included in that "only a quarter" who are rejected, would be myself with a 32/3.7 and a friend with a 33/4.0 last year. It is truly an entire application type of school where one thing can make or break you. I know students that got in with 27/3.5 range stats.

PS I heard back March 10 my first cycle that I got the flat rejection.

The stats don't lie. 290 IS residents applied, but only 230 were interviewed.

Yes, it truly is a wholistic school. That's what makes it awesome. They are looking to train physicians, not doctors.
 
One awesome thing about UNMC admissions is that they give you an exit interview - and tells you where to improve.

I recently was rejected from Temple - and when asked for feedback - all they said was "sorry, we had a really competitive year"..

If it is holistic - then why can one thing make or break you?
 
I think by that he means it would probably break your application if you don't have clinical experience or job shadowing. That's what I assume anyway
 
Thankfully, my phone syncs all the time with my email. So, if I get an email, I will be notified instantaneously. This doesn't mean that I'll not be checking the volume of the ringer, or refresh the inbox frequently.

The adcoms met again this week - will release a big round of decisions this week.
 
I got an email today saying that I was accepted on December 20th, and they haven't gotten my reply to their offer of admission... I never got the letter in the mail! To think I've been waiting to hear all this time... Woo!
 
OMG. Congratulations!!!!!! That's awesome! Do you mind PMing me your stats/ec? Lol. I need some hope.

Are you sure you checked every possible mailbox you have - and not getting the mail?

There was another poster on here who did get a packet in the mail like few days after Christmas..

The emails was from UNMC, not a background check. It was basically a "hurry up and reply because you only have a week left to do so" sort of thing.

The M4 who was "facilitating" my interview group said the same thing happened to him. Snail mail can be this way sometimes if the document has certain restrictions on delivery. He also mentioned receiving a "hurry up" email right before attending an Iowa-Carver interview ( which he immediately canceled). The medical school admissions process is somewhat archaic but it is what it is.

True, but we will at least know we will be doctors for sure. Now we are hanging by the thread for something we wanted for so long! Hehe.

Congrats!! Do you live far away? I'm from CA so I'm hoping all this delay is partially due to the distance snail mail has to travel..

The first batch of acceptances already went out three weeks ago or so. You would have gotten an acceptance letter in the mail by now if you got in I think. However, it is possible that they only looked at like half of the applicants who interviewed by December or something.

The meeting they had in December only reviewed about 40-50 interviewed applicants out of like 450. About 1/10 of candidates..not 1/2.

If you live in Omaha - Today or Monday is when we should hear back from the next batch of decisions.

Plenty of people get in during Feb. So still alot of waiting for some of us folks...
