Do any current medical students live the redstone lofts apartments? If so what do you think about them and are they overpriced? thanks

So when I called on yesterday they told me that the class is full right now but they expect seats to open up in next couple of weeks. I honestly do not know what that means and have no idea how much to wait now. I have sent in three letters, two letter of recommendations and dont know what else to send.

Thanks for the info Mitalie! I've sent letters/updates similar to you as well. I hope some spots open up for us!

Thanks for the update! I guess I shouldn't be expecting any news at the end of this week like last year's cycle.

When you guys usually call who do you talk to / what do you mention? I've sent a few LOI but haven't called in really.

This is coming from a close relative who was on the AdCom the last few years: For some reason, he didn't seem to know, UVM wants exactly 114 students in a class. UVM also does background checks for their incoming class in late July-early August. The last two years, two students have 'misled' the AdCom by stating they have never been in legal trouble, when in fact, they had (although both cases seem to have been minor). When their admission was revoked, the class only had 113. At most schools this would not have been an issue, but UVM really likes this 114 number. Therefore, someone has been admitted last minute (3 and 5 days before classes started, respectively) the last two years. Fortunately, someone who didn't think they were getting in got admitted! Unfortunately, this gives false hopes to many students (myself included) who are told, "Last year someone got in a week before classes." So with a full class mid-June, we can't be too optimistic that more than 2-3 spots will open up.

Didn't AAMC already run background checks? I got my results already.

Yeah, I'm not sure what could possibly come up that didn't already come up with the AAMC background checks.

Now I'm confused about how much movement I should be expecting. Would it be closer to 20-30 like NMonte said or just a few?

Is it worth calling to ask? I'm thinking I'll just get a super vague semi-answer.

I was wondering that too. Aren't background checks done during AMCAS? But that's what I was told from someone on the committee for those two years.

sounds like AMCAS runs the background checks but doesn't release them until the applicant is accepted. Meaning those two students with the background check issues were accepted late. So they falsely self reported having a clean criminal background and were exposed after acceptance.

Last minute vacancies happen for all kinds of reasons. This can certainly be one. There is a student in my class who was accepted the week before orientation, although I don't know the specifics on why that spot opened up. Sometimes it can be because a spot opens up at another school, someone holding an acceptance takes it, and then there is a chain reaction of drops and offers, a ripple effect.

The 114 number is because that's the capacity for the main lecture hall. We literally don't have any room for more students past that point!

Am I the only one who thinks 2-3 spots opening up is too little? I'm not expecting a ton of people to withdraw...but 2-3 spots left sound like wayy too few, especially since the WL season ends in August. I also think that we can expect more to withdraw as other schools move their own WL's around and people get accepted to better/cheaper schools. UVM is awesome though; maybe I'm being too optimistic.

I am also trying to stay optimistic - nothing to do but wait and remind the committee that you exist from time to time! Alternately, having a back-up plan never hurts.

My background email was sent to me a week or two after I was accepted (mid may), prompting me to initiate the check. I got the results 5 days later, clean and I released it immediately to UVM (certiphi gives you a grace period to contest anything before they automatically send it to the school)

yeah I was ready to go on a crime spree through the summer but I guess I'll have to wait

Has anyone called the office recently for an update?

Hey guys!

I'll be withdrawing my acceptance from UVM once I receive my official acceptance packet from a waitlist school (I just heard my decision over the phone). In other words, I hope one of you gets my spot. Best of luck to those waiting!

Thanks for letting us know! And congrats!

Hey Guys. I was just admitted to UVM this year and will be starting in Aug 2012. Feel free to message me with any questions you may have about UVM.

zeppelinpage4: they are very OOS friendly. Almost 70% of their class is OOS. Not many Vermonters apply to be MDs 🙂
Dr Marty,

Any information on what they ask in the secondaries or where I can find this information? I want to get a head start on writing as I have applied to several schools.

Thanks

Hey there! The good thing about UVM is that there are no secondary essays. Just an easy application that asks simple questions. It took me 10mins to finish. Check!

I know this is a long way off, but I just emailed the office looking for an academic calendar for the first year and they said it wont be finalized until late July! I am already trying to make some scheduling plans for next summer and I was wondering if any current students could give me an idea of when classes for first year students usually end in the spring and when second year typically starts up again in the fall. Also, are there any significant breaks during the year?

I was also wondering what most students tend to spend their time doing between first and second year and what kind of opportunities there are during the summer at UVM. Thanks in advance for the help!

Maybe others will chime in but the people who just finished first year are on break now, so I don't know how much time they spend on the forum. End of first year this year was June 14th, and classes will start back up on August 12th. The summer break between first and second year is eight weeks long. There is also a two week break at Christmas, five days for Thanksgiving, and a spring break in April, the second week I think.

There are competitive research fellowships available for the summer break, and there is also a competitive process to apply for travel awards to go places. You can do research anywhere though, and you certainly don't need one of those fellowships to do some here either, they just help. But really you can do just about anything, including nothing at all. The school prompts you to start thinking about summer plans after you come back from the Christmas break, and more information becomes available around then. It's really all about wherever your initiative takes you, and what resources you can come up with or discover to get you there.

Another thing to think of is that the student budget doesn't take the summer break into account - you have to make the spring semester disbursement that you get in January last all the way into August.

I called the office today. Liz told me that there is still WL movement going on (despite what it looks like on SDN) and that people have been getting accepted continuously throughout the season. She said there will definitely be more offers of acceptance in the future, but she doesn't know when they'll be sent out because at this point, it all depends on other people withdrawing. So to all those people holding multiple acceptances and aren't planning on attending UVM, please email/call admissions and withdraw if you haven't already done so! It could really help those of us on the WL! 🙂

UVM email: [email protected]
UVM phone: (802) 656-2154

Good luck everyone! :luck::luck::luck:

Yes, thanks for the update NekoBeats!!! UVM is my top choice - I would love to get an acceptance here!

Is it just me, or is anyone else finding the cost of attendance for this place to be a joke? After all the fees, how can they possibly expect you to live off what's left? The money left over is barely enough for rent, and they budget you $60 per WEEK for food. Dafuqq?!? but that's if you can find a place for $600/month, which is impossible, the COA should be increased by $10K because that is what limits the loans you may take out.

Adding together the budget categories of Misc-Travel, Misc-Other and Books/Supplies there is another $8k+. And though it sucks, the money is only suppose to cover 9.5 months. Basic budget breakdown goes as (with a roommate):

Rent: $750
Gas: $40
Electric: $40
Water: $30
Cable/Internet: $50
Food: $400
Cell: $70 (assuming iPhone or equivalent)
Misc: $150
Month Budget: $1530
School Year Cost: $14535
Full Year Cost: $18360

What the budget indicates we'll have minus fees and tuition: $18270

So if you have a roommate you should be able to make it work for the full year and thats with me estimating quite high for the cost of utilities and food. If you wanted to do a crude budget for a studio by doubling the utilities and adding a $50 to the rent then you'd end up at a year cost of just over $20.5k but this is likely an overestimate with the real number around $19k.

I'm also not positive about this but you should also budget around $600 dollars for the health insurance. They let you increase the budget to cover the health insurance for the time your in school which works out to roughly 80% of the $2740.

So while it's tight you should be able to pull it off for the whole year and definitely for the school year.

thanx for the info, I'll have to take another look

Have any of my fellow waitlisters heard anything recently?

has anyone called the admissions office lately?

I'll be on calling Monday, will update everyone then. I pretty much just plan on asking if there's still WL movement and if so, when we can expect more acceptances. If anyone wants me to ask something else, lmk.

Still faintly hoping here, no news yet. I actually dreamt two nights ago that I got the acceptance email. Ouch!

Just had a dream like that recently. So many feels 🙁

I tried calling a couple times today, but couldn't get a hold of anyone. I'm guessing they're swamped with the new app cycle and everything. I'll try calling again tomorrow.

Talked to the office today. I asked if there has been WL movement lately, and Liz told me that there actually hasn't been for a while... BUT we can expect more movement even though we're in the middle of July. Reason being that for the past four years, there HAS been WL movement past this point in the cycle. So, historically, she said more people should be getting acceptances. I asked her when we can expect the next acceptances to go out and she said she doesn't know since it depends on people who withdraw and the committee. I asked her if the committee still meets every few weeks to decide who fills in the withdrawn seats. She said that at this point, the committee meets every time someone withdrawals. This is done in order to offer the seat to another qualified applicant and to "lock down" that seat ASAP. So...at least there still might be some movement left? Hope that helps guys.

And to anyone holding an acceptance at UVM who is not planning to attend: please contact the admissions office and withdraw! It could really help those of us on the WL 🙂

Good luck everyone :luck::luck:

It's getting really close to the wire. Anyone hear anything? I called the office the other day and was told pretty much the same thing from last week...that there should be movement still, etc etc. I was told that although the new cycle has begun, the adcom's priority/focus is filling this year's class. Really hoping for some UVM love here!

Seriously? This late in the game? I find it hard to believe that people will withdraw now with only a week or so before class.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking....but according to her and SDN threads, people have been pulled off the WL a week or two before orientation. I think in 2010 someone was accepted the day before school stared. I guess you never know what could happen but realistically, chances are pretty slim at this point.

I know one waitlist acceptance went out today.

I thought the first day of orientation was August 12th?

Oh wow, thanks for letting us know! Was it someone on the FB group that said they just got accepted today? I hope more acceptances come out soon....

I thought the first day of orientation was August 12th?

I thought it was the 5th?

EDIT: I just checked the website. You're right. It starts on August 12th!

I think at this point it's safe to say the class is full. When I called the office, the lady said the final day is Monday and while no one has withdrawn, there may be a chance that a student doesn't show up... I'm not sure why this would happen but I guess if someone gets admitted to his or her first choice this weekend or forgot to withdraw previously. :luck:
